it's a case against rezw rezwan ferdaus. he was going to send one to the capitol and two more to the pentagon. it would have been followed by a ground attack but as pete williams tells us, ferdaus did not have the money to fund what he wanted to do. >> he didn't have any money to buy the plains. the undercover operatives provided him with that. he had no access to explosive materials. >> reporter: he purchased one plane, six ak-47s and wanted to use the explosives that would take out a two-block area and he didn't care if he killed women or children. barbara? >> melissa, thank you for that report. a man is in the hospital

after getting hit by a truck here in d.c. it happened on fourth street near independence avenue around 7:00 this morning. rescuers call the man's injuries serious as drivers made their way into the district. the truck driver remained on the scene and was interviewed by police. a pedestrian was hit by a car this morning on calvert street and happened just after calvert street. the pedestrian is a female and it's not yet clear and new this midday, engineers rappelling have discovered cracks along the walls. megan is live at the national mall with this discovery. megan? >> reporter: barbara, that is

what they were basically expecting after this earthquake they knew they had an issue with cracks, loose mortar, and the like. the big question is, how much damage was done. and that's what this whole operations about. take a look behind me. you can see he that we have the team out here once again today. they are concentrating on that area at the very top. that's where the majority of the damage is. they are taking a second look here at some of the troubled spots and will work their way down to the monument. if the weather cooperate, they will be out there for most of the afternoon. it's an amazing view. the national park service released video of the team in action. the architects and engineers are said to be having a balance. she said that it was awesome is what she said and that the view is fantastic, that she feels

really honored to be on the washington monument on what is a national icon. >> reporter: the washington monument has always been a major tourist attraction but viewers are getting to see something quite unusual. people literally crawling all over it. >> it's wonderful. we're here in our nation's capitol and we're getting to see events as they unfold. that's really what it is all about. >> this affected my trip because i really wanted to go into the washington monument. >> but you get to see folks hanging off the side. they found pretty much what they were expecting. >> they found loose mortar, loose grouting, some cracks. they have identified areas of interest that need further examination. >> reporter: after finishing at the top, the team took a quick

look at the rest of the monument but a much closer inspection must be done. at first glance, nothing glaring has cropped up. >> reporter: you can see two of the climbers here in our view, just amazing, amazing stuff. the video released by the national park service really is something else to see and, again, we're being told by the spokes people here that they are having a great time up there. it's a once in a lifetime experience. while they are working, it's a profession for them. obviously they are enjoying the moment and having a terrific time. i have to tell you, in terms of the tourists, we're seeing a steady stream of folks coming down. many saw what was going on yesterday and they came down to see -- sneak a peak for themselves. barbara, back to you. >> for some of them, it's hard to see them dangling up there.

>> thanks, megan. >> let's turn to the weather and look at what is going on with the sky out there. it looks like sunshine is coming through. tom kierein joins us with the forecast. how is it for the folks out there? >> it may hold out. we have a band of very light rain showers moving into downtown right know. it shouldn't last too terribly long and they will be able to get right back out there and back to work by mid- to late afternoon. outside, there you go. a little bit of sunshine getting out there at some point in time. temperatures are climbing, thanks to all of the sunshine. 74 degrees right now at national airport. dewpoints starting to come down a little bit because winds are shifting. they were out a of the south and taking on a northwesterly component. temperatures held in the 60s in the high spots north and west of town where there have been

steadier and light rain showers. you can see very light rain from hagerstown, maryland, southbound into portions of northern county and a few minutes. crime is down 12% and county crime dropped by 8% and overall crime is down by 9% in prince george's county. langly park, riverdale was focused on. they say prevention and outreach

efforts will continue. and the summer initiative is one way that prince george's county is working to lower its crime rate. tracee wilkins is there. >> reporter: this is actually a monthly meeting that they have at the prince george's county police department where they talk about trying to bring down the crime numbers and focus on the warrant initiative program. while the program has been doing so well and it's a program that works to make sure criminals on parole and violate that parole are quickly punished and put back behind bars. because of the success of this program, today governor martin owe mally decided to join them for the meeting. he announced today that during the month of august, more than 700 offenders were arrested or kept behind bars at prince george's county. these were offenders charged with crimes and along with mare

land parole and probation office, maryland state police, prince george's county police, and the u.s. marshals office as well. they say the work should be considered a model for how partnerships can get criminals off the street and for how crime can be reduced. >> i think prince george's county can be a remarkable success story in violent crime reduction and improved public safety, thanks to county executive baker's leadership and the courageous work of lawmakers. >> we can't put police officers out there. we've got to bring to services to bear on it and i think that's going to help. we're very pleased that at least the numbers are going down and caused us to bring everybody

together. >> reporter: he is saying that it's a fantastic program and is working very well. they are hoping to see the numbers to continue to decrease here in prince george's county. the county is experiencing a record low in crime. now, this has been since they started to actually do crime statistics. they are seeing some of the lowest numbers right now. a large portion of the funding for this effort was taken care of by the governor's office. i'm tracee wilkins, live this morning, barbara, back to you in the studio. >> thank you so much, tracy. the d.c. police department needs about 300 new police officers. the department will be ready to train a class of 35 recruits starting october 4th but the union is concerned that that will not be a enough because of 15 to 30 officers that retire every month. the goal is to build the department of 3500 sworn officers by 2012. right now the force is about 3800 strong. the parents of a war veteran and graduate student want

justice for their son that died after a fight. 33-year-old patrick david casey died tuesday afternoon from his injuries. he was trying to break up a fight when he was sucker punched knocking him down. he hit his head on the ground. the fight happened friday morning outside the mcdonald's near 19th and m streets northwest. he returned in august from a year-long deployment in afghanistan. >> we expected this call at any time then. it was the longest 12 months of our lives. we thought that was the worst. this by far is the worst. >> they think they got away with this attack. we want to see these guys convicted and we want to see them sent away. >> casey just began a master's program at george washington university. menassis city police are

event at the bethesda hotel. the general ticket price is $500 per person and private reception is $2500 per person. new jersey republican governor chris christie says he is not running for president but he is attending a fund-raiser in louisiana today. he has been helping his party raise money in missouri and southern california. during his speech at the reagan library, he was asked to run again for the republican nomination for president. he said no but kind of left something for supporters to cling to. today the vote has voted on and passed a one-week spending became. the bill will keep the government running through october 4th. the measure passed the house with the unanimous position of all of the presidents. the it goes to the white house for president barack obama's signature. they will vote on the longer-term measure. the senate passed that one on monday. they keep it running through november 18th. today vice president joe

biden will be in alexandria to push president obama's jobs bill. in just a few minutes, the vp will help sell the $4700 billion bill which the obama administration argues would help keep first responders on the job. if passed, the jobs plan would provide billions -- a billion dollars to hire and hold on to public safety personnel, like firefighters and police officers. and we are having not such a great day today but not so bad. you've got another round of rain. boy, that rain last night, that was unbelievable. >> and heavy rain. >> no more of that though, right? >> no. today will be a much calmer day. the risk was all stacked along yesterday and we had a lot of rain around last night. the rainfall is drying up.

outside, at almost lunchtime, it's still a mostly cloudy day. light rain to be found on the radar. i'll show you that in just a second. the rainfall amounts are going to be very, very light for the remainder of your thursday. that is welcome news and some people won't even see another drop for the remainder of the day. right now, 74 degrees under mostly cloudy sky. dewpoints, close to 70 early this morning. dropping back down into the lower 60s. westerly wind starting to mix in slightly drier air. that's the beginning of the end of the rain chances for today, tonight, and for tomorrow. but more rain chances sneaking back into the weekend forecast, i'm afraid. 67 in hagerstown, in mar continuesburg, and charlottseville. that's the reason that it's heading out to cooler weather. day planner, there's a chance of a quick passing shower or two. but rainfall amounts will be less than a tenth of an inch, even for the folks that get the

big winners across parts of fed drix county and interstate 70 as well. so look out here for light rain showers. these are only going to last the next 10 or 15 minutes generally lifting up to the northeast at 25 to 35 miles per hour. very light rain showers moving into prince william county. these are tending to dry up just a bit. these are only going to be quick, five minute long showers at the most. and then you can see not much of anything in the way back out to our south and west. that is definitely welcome news. it will give us at least 24 to 36 hours to dry out before rain chances come out over the weekend. cooler weather and drier air. dewpoints still 70 at the ocean and back into the mid-50s out so the north and west, a pocket of cooler air that makes our friday a very nice day out here. but saturday is looking very november-like, i'm afraid. a little area of low pressure generating showers around for today. we'll clear out and be quiet for

trial of dr. conrad murray. a security guard testified about the physicians efforts to keep michael jackson alive. >> he appeared to be administering cpr. he appeared very nervous. >> dr. murray is accused of giving jackson propofol that left him unconscious. he delayed calling 911 and frantically tried to revive jackson himself. murray asked to be taken back to jackson's home. >> he said that there was some cream in michael's room or house -- i believe room -- that he wouldn't want the world to know about and he requested that i or someone give him a ride back to the house to get it so the world, you know, wouldn't know about the cream. >> the trial is scheduled to

resume within the hour. the family of amanda knox will have to wait until monday to learn if her sentence will be overturned. her attorneys spent the day explaining that knox was an innocent girl. she has been sentenced to 24 years for the death of her roommate but her family hopes that she will be set free. >> she said that she's very anxious about her verdict coming up. she's very nervous about it because of what happened last time but we're also very hopeful. >> today matt lauer spoke with her sisters about how she is holding up. they say they are not letting

what is said about their sister said about them because they know what amanda is really like. with the dna used to convict her now being discredited, the knox family admits that they are not emotionally prepared if the guilty verdict stands. the man accused of shooting gabrielle giffords will soon be able to stand trial. they delayed his trial for four months. he's accused of killing six people and wounding 13 others in tucson earlier this year. lawmakers in virginia want the pentagon to slow down the transfer of thousands of workers in alexandria. jim web and mark warner and jim moran wrote a letter to leon from panetta. the transfer will vote until accommodations are made. defense workers are being transferred to the facility by the end of this year. i'm going to check with
