washington's news leader. now, live in hd, this is news4 at 6:00. tonight at # clock, a new political movement makes its way from wall street to d.c. could this group wield as much influence as the tea party? thousands turn out for the funeral of an executed death row inmate. and the weather slows down inspections of the washington monument and sends one engineer on a wild ride. but first, we have breaking news right now out of prince george's county, that's where a fire has put dozens of people out of their homes tonight. good evening, i'm eric gilchrist. it started in laurel around 4:30 this afternoon in the 8800 block of hunting lane. darcy spencer live at the scene

now with the latest. darcy? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. they got the call right around 4:30 this afternoon. and this fire quickly escalated to a two-alarm blaze. fire rescue crews are still here on the scene. joining us now to give us the very latest on this case is mark brady with the prince george's county fire department. so this started out in the bottom level of a three-story building, and basically went through the roof or the attic area? >> it did. the middle floor, extending up to the top floor and eventually through the roof. when firefighters arrived, heavy smoke from the roof and heavy fire conditions on the rear side of the building. >> it looks like a dozen units were affected? >> it's going to be 11 units in the building of origin, and 11 units in the building attached to that. about 60 residents will be displaced as a result of this fire. american red cross, citizens

services unit are providing some shelter for these displaced people. >> just to correct myself, it's the berkshires at the brierwood apartments here, basically off 197 and konte road? >> that's right. it's split up into several different complexes. >> were there any injuries or rescues as a result of this? >> fortunately, because the fire started on the exterior of the building, everybody had a chance to escape. no firefighter injuries. our only concern was a cat that was located on the second floor by firefighters after the fire was out. and reunited with the owner. >> and as far as you know, were smoke alarms functioning and alerting people to get out? >> as far as we know, the alarm bells had activated. smoke alarms activated. in a fire like this that starts in the outside furnace cabinet and travels to the exterior, makes it way into the roof area and banks back down, sometimes it bypasses that smoke alarm system. but fortunately the alarm bells did activate, alerted everybody in the building to get out,

which they did safely. >> thank you very much for talking to us. two-alarm blaze here in laurel this afternoon. fortunately, no injuries have been reported. reporting live from laurel, darcy spencer, news4. aaron, back to you. >> thank you, darcy. the other big story on this first day of october is the weather. cloudy, rainy, and for some folks flat-out cold today. chuck, how long is this stuff going to stick around? i guess it's just starting, right? >> unfortunately it's going to last pretty much to wipe out most of the weekend from a sunshine and mild weather concern. temperatures right now are some 25 degrees colder than this same time yesterday. yesterday afternoon, we were up in the low to mid-70s. right now, upper 40s and low 50s is all we can muster around the washington area. 48 degrees in leesburg, 51 downtown. you can see on the radar, plenty of rain showers out there wrapping around through montgomery, fairfax and loudon county, even where darcy was in prince george's county,

sprinkles around. this will continue for the remainder of the evening. expect chilly conditions for your saturday evening. sunday not looking a whole lot better. we'll talk about that and when the sunshine will come back in the seven-day. customers are firing back at bank of america after word of a new debit card fee. they announced they'll start charging $5 a month to use that debit card. as brian moore says, blame congress. >> reporter: bank of america is getting an earful from americans who clearly don't like the idea of a new debit card fee. >> that angers me. i'm not happy about it. >> reporter: beginning next year, the troubled banking giant wants to charge customers $5 a month, $60 a year to use their debit cards for purchases. >> that's ridiculous. on all levels. >> reporter: but not for bank of america, which like all banks, is looking to regain an estimated $15 billion a year lost after congress passed last

year's banking reform law. >> we don't like doing this. it's the last thing we wanted to do. unfortunately we were forced to do it by government intervention. >> folks, vote with your feet. if you think the debit card fee that bank of america is going to impose, go shopping. find yourself another place that will treat you a lot better. >> we have the right to the laws. i think people need to do that. >> reporter: you can run, but you may not be able to hide from an annual debit card fee which may soon be coming to a bank near you. several other big banks are already considering or adopting similar policies. brian moore, news4. d.c. police looking for a murderer tonight after a shooting in northeast. officers were called to 5300 dix street. they found carlows michael eady of northwest, who had been shot several times. he was rushed to a hospital and died a short time later. we are learning more tonight about a u.s. military drone strike that took out american

cleric anwar al awlaki. it also took out two other top al qaeda figures. intelligence officials say yesterday's strike in yemen killed saudi militant al sa hiry. he believe he constructed the explosives for the failed underwear bombing in 2009. it also killed samir khan, a pakistani american who was a top english language propogandist. they're calling it the single most effective blow on al qaeda since the war on terror started. more than 1,000 people attended a service for davis, who was executed last week for the 1989 killing of a savannah police officer. his case drew international attention after seven witnesses who testified at his trial later recanted. the death sentence also drew pleas for clemency from the pope and former president jimmy carter. davis' final words included a denial of killing officer mark mcphail. keep those phones away if you're driving in maryland.

the new texting law allows police officers to pull a driver over if they see them sending or reading messages on their phone. you could get a $70 fine or point on your license. before today they needed another reason to pull drivers over before giving a ticket for texting. still ahead on the broadcast tonight, a dangerous and daring development for a worker at the washington monument. but that is not why inspections were suspended today. and family members of amanda knox reveal how the american is feeling, as the world waits to find out if she'll remain in jail in italy for murder. and what has cops literally raising money in the rain

we should know on monday whether amanda knox will be locked up for murder in italy. knox was 20 years old when she was accused of killing her roommate. over the last week there have been heated arguments over the prosecution's evidence, and knox's character. her only hope is recently admitted forensic evidence that casts some doubt whether the 24-year-old had a hand in the crime. her family members say this whole trial has taken its toll on knox. >> you feel nauseous all day long. it's this -- you can't settle. you can't relax. and amanda's not sleeping. her first day i was here, i remember looking at the back of

her arms and she has hives everywhere. >> as far as the genetic evidence, i feel that she has a very good chance. >> the prosecution has upped the ante asking the court to increase knox's sentence to life, in addition to six months of solitary confinement. dozens in new york today have been arrested for the so-called occupy wall street movement. today d.c. is on the agenda for protesters who say the big money is playing too big a role in government. this weekend they began camping out in mcpherson square. what's not so big right now, their numbers. but they say that is not discouraging them. derek ward has more. >> reporter: they've been at it for two weeks on wall street. demonstrators railing against what is too big of government. the movement moved to washington. the protest here in d.c., lots of drumming. that's not a protest. this is. they say they are the core of

the movement spread into the nation's capital. the and earlier today you could find tour groups that outnumbered occupy d.c., but they still had enough for what they call a general assembly, both here and new york. >> we're united around the sense that the country's gone in a bad direction with allowing corporate interests to govern where the people should be governing. >> reporter: they have all the trappings of the larger occupying gathering, camping gear, even a medical team. although they're not as loud as a woman's percussion band across the park, they say they're just as passionate for their reasons of being there. >> i have issues with the government manipulates the money in this country. and i think a lot of it has us upset. >> people who come together respecting each other. that's what makes us different. >> reporter: surely at one point there were only this many people in the tea party. >> everything has to start small. >> when we got here this

morning, there were five of us, and now there are 40 or 50 of us. even in the rain and cold weather people are coming out. and we've already grown ten times what we were two or three hours ago. >> reporter: they say even if their numbers don't go to wall street proportion, they've still got big ambitions for their kind of change. >> we're locals. it's a home-grown movement. we're not just going to come in and do our little thing and get out. we're here for the long haul. >> reporter: derek ward, news4. the protesters with occupy d.c. plan to be peaceful but also plan to be visible. they haven't given any timetable when occupy d.c. will end. the crew of engineers at the war monument ran into scary weather this weekend. a gust of wind sent one of the climbers flying about 30 feet. officials say erik sohn was on a rope when it happened yesterday. the inspection work was suspended today because of the weather.

it was cold and wet today, but it couldn't keep hundreds from checking out the leesburg air show. it featured several experimental

and antique aircraft along with other aviation displays, food vendors, and a classic car show. and they showcased a professional wing walker. faa officials were there as well to help organizers make sure all safety regulations were being met in light of other recent air show accidents. the weather isn't stopping charles county sheriff's deputies from hanging out on the roof. cops are stationed on two chick-fil-a rooftops. the cops will hoist the money up to the top of the roof. the cops on the rooftops fund-raiser will continue until 10:00 tonight at the waldorf and laplatea chick-fil-a restaurants. grab the umbrella if you're going to go. and a coat. not even a jacket today. the heavy stuff. >> something with a lining, really, is what you need out there for today. chilly stuff. you would never guess we changed months between yesterday and today, would you. yesterday, beautiful september afternoon with sunshine and 75 degrees. everyone's like, wow, the

weekend is almost here. and today, yeah, the weekend is here, and mother nature took an ugly hard left turn during the overnight hours. cloudy skies outside all day today. this is georgetown. tourists and locals alike bundled up, fleece, down, umbrellas, hats, scarves, mitttons, all of it. you notice not a single smile on any of those faces down there in georgetown today. cloudy skies remain in place overhead. 51 degrees our current temperature down at national airport. winds out of the northwest at 8 miles per hour. the winds will ease up ever so slightly during the overnight hours today. still a little on the breezy to blustery side, though. current temperatures, mid and upper 40s to the north and west of town where the rain showers have been quite a bit more persistent during the course of the day. high today 62. at 12:01 a.m. 50 degrees our low today.

generally .02 of an inch or less. at least around metro washington. a little more rain in martinsburg, winchester, to the spots north and west. this drift is going to continue on these showers. so it's going to be a little bit of a sloppy go along interstate 81, toward the panhandle of west virginia. in town the showers are really getting going now. they're drifting southbound. western fairfax, eastern loudon county in the line of fire for that next little line of showers. still some drip conditions just down to our south. that doesn't do us any good down here. cloudy skies and drizzle and light rain for much of the evening hours. that will will probably continue. main area of low pressure just down to our south and west. watch what happens over the next 48 hours. it heads out to the eastern shore, northbound to philadelphia, westbound toward state college, back down to the south as it continues to wobble around itself here. we'll stay very chilly and unsettled around here with

a little college football on our plate. >> good game on tap. navy, the best game of the day. every year the three service academies, army, navy and the air force compete for their national championship. the commander in chief's trophy awarded to the team with the most head-to-head wins against each other. but to get to the magic number of two wins, each game is a battle. today the midshipman tried to bring it home to annapolis. trying to avenge the loss against air force in colorado springs.
