i'm angie goff. >> it is sunday, october 2nd. thank you so much for joining us. those top stories we'll get to in just a moment. first, meteorologist chuck bell is in the studio. it's not too pretty outside. i don't know if you have many friends right now. >> no. i don't have many friends. >> you have friends in here, but i'm sure people at home -- >> seeing the kind of wind we saw blow around the washington monument. >> no. it will not be that breezy today. that's one step in the right direction. over the last couple of hours, looking at some of the latest computer guidance and new hope it won't be quite as rainy today. as was originally feared. i have lowered our chance of rain a touch. you're gaining more friends. >> i went from a 70% chance to a 40% chance. there's a nice update for you there. i'll show you why i'm more confident. don't get me fooled. it's not going to be warm today. and you're not going to see much in the way of sunshine. we're not going to have as much wind or rain as we did yesterday. that's the improvement. right now temperatures are in

the 40s around washington. 50 in fredericksburg. 50 on the eastern shore in cam bring, maryland. 41 in hagerstown, maryland right now with a little bit of light rain and drizzle, southern pennsylvania, maryland. widen out the view. you notice this pinwheel of moisture is going a lot more west than south. so a lot of those showers now in western pennsylvania will head down into western west virginia. that's the reason i'm a little bit more optimistic that it's not going to be as much rain today. don't stray too far from your umbrellas because we could cook up a couple of showers around here as early as about 1:00 or 2:00 this afternoon and as we get later into the day, especially into overnight tonight, a little better chance for rain coming back in. so not as rainy for your sunday but still cold and cloudy. get ready for that. >> we are ready. >> okay. >> thanks, chuck. >> that's all i can go. >> thank you so much, chuck. a scary moment yesterday for engineers repelling down the side of a washington monument was caught on tape. this video into our newsroom

captures the exact moment it happened. take a look. a gust of wind blew one of the climbers 30 feet. you see him coming from behind the washington monument. his name is eric song. he was hanging 50 feet off the grouped when this happened. he comes back and hits the side of the monument with some force. fortunately, he is okay. the engineers cut their work short yesterday because of bad weather. they hope to resume the job today. this weekend a chaotic scene played out in lower manhattan as hundreds of protesters clogged the brooklyn bridge, taking a two-week protest to a whole new level. police arrested at least 700 of them called "outline wall street." >> reporter: this cell phone video given to an nbc affiliate, shows some of the protesters along the brooklyn bridge. police taking others into custody. as many as 700 such arrests took place saturday, as demonstrators aired their grievances in a march along the bridge.

>> we are 99%. >> reporter: they've been gathering in new york city now for two weeks now. hundreds camping out in a park near wall street demonstrating against a wide variety of social ills, from corporate greed to global warming. their numbers from continued to grow. last weekend saw as many as 80 arrests and squirmishes with the nypd a youtube. by design there is no one leader of this group and no organized set of demands. >> we're doing it together. we're coming together and we're seeing things need to be changed. how are we going to do this? >> reporter: the movement has spawned similar protests across the country. labor experts say it's gaining the attention of high-profile activists. >> this is the liberal version of the tea party, especially with young people who are getting mobilized and expressing their grievances. i think this could potentially

carry over into the 2012 election. >> reporter: attention that could spread from this bridge to the political stage. on a much smaller scale that movement has spread to d.c. two dozen protesters are camping out in mcpherson square. they are calling it "occupy d.c." grievances are similar to those in new york. they're calling for less corporate influence on government. last call. it's as close as a tavern can be to a political institution. the famed hawk n dove opens today. derrick ward is live at the bar with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. just another sunday morning finds me at a bar. of course this one isn't open yet. ha, ha, ha. its location is everything. i had a guy come by a few minutes ago and said this is like the left vestage of the world war building up. indeed, it is like to to a lot of people.

44 years ago, back in 1967 when the hawk n dove opened up. as the name typifies this is what goes on in washington at least in a bygone era where hawks and doves could sit by each other at a bar if they could not agree with each other across the aisle. there is a course of rumors and ure about its involvement, secret sessions among lawmakers. even though the political winds have changed, as has the area around the hawk n dove, it has held onto its character and tip filed the character of this block. and it's in a place in an era that is soon to be an even more bygone era. >> i never thought it would end. yes. it seems like all of us as a generation never think it's going to end. >> it's a real neighborhood place.

it was very laid back. a lot of other people worked here the same amount of time. it's like family. >> reporter: now, when they open up in a couple of hours, of course, i guess one of the big events here will be the redskins game. it has changed with the times, at least regarding technology. a bunch of tv screens and a dropdown dig screen, a place to watch the game. the last saturday night at a bar is as important as the last sunday. but they expect a big crowd here today. actually, i spoke to someone who said they had a really big crowd last night. so the challenge will be to clean up and put on their best face for that last day. now, this place will mid-october suspected to be taken over by the new owners, undergo renovation and open up in five minutes, tender an upscale saloon. for a lot of folks it will be a homey watering hole. live on capitol hill. back to you. >> we know they're selling off items from inside the bar. if there's anything you can take

with you, what would it be? >> reporter: that's a good question. i would like one of those neon signs. there's always a place for a guy to put a neon sign in his apartment, you know? >> good call. all right. we'll see if we can get one for you. >> thanks derrick. >> thanks, derrick. >> all right. we're following breaking news in the middle east. that's where yemeni officials say a government warplane mistakenly bombed an army position. at least 30 soldiers are dead and many more are wounded. the bombing happened overnight in the southern province where militants linked to al qaeda from the in control since may. they have encountered heavy fighting during a month-long campaign to win back the province. there's a worldwide travel alert for americans this morning on fears extremists could retaliate for the killing of radical al qaeda leader. they are urging u.s. citizens traveling overseas to register with smart traveler enrollment

program. it makes it easier for the government to contact travelers if there is an emergency. the travel alert is set to last through november. a key al qaeda bomb maker may be among those killed in the friday drone attack in yemen. settle shows al asiri is among the dead. al asiri is believed to be responsible for making the bombs used in several attempted attacks. among them, the failed attack by the so-called underwear bomber on christmas day 2009. new trouble for the cia contractor who was accused of killing two men while working in pakistan. raymond davis faces charges. police say he got into a fight over a parking spot at a colorado shopping center. davis strained ties between the u.s. and pakistan in january. he was killed with killing two men he claimed were trying to rob him. he was eventually released after the u.s. settled with the families of the victims. dozens of residents of air prince george's county apartment complex are looking for a new

home this morning after a two-alarm fire tore through their building. the fire broke out around 4:30 yesterday afternoon at the berkshires of briarwood in hunting lane in laurel. investigators say a malfunctioning furnace on the first floor sparked the fire. it then spread to the two floors above, badly damaging 22 apartments. good news, everyone inside is okay. firefighters did rescue a cat from the second floor. damage is estimated at $250,000. police in prince george's county are looking for a pair of thieves who held up a university of maryland student at gunpoint. police say the student was waiting for a ride outside her off-campus apartment on baltimore avenue. two men in a black and purple toyota scion called her over, then pulled out a gun and took her purse. the men drove away, and the victim was not hurt. president obama lashed out at republican presidential candidates for their nonreaction to the booing of a gay soldier

at their last debate. >> do you intend to circumvent the progress that's been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military? >> a gay soldier was booed after asking his question during the most recent republican debate and none of the candidates came to his defense. last night he spoke at a dinner for the human rights campaign and chastised the tkapbd indicates for not defending the soldier. we don't believe in the kind of smallness that says it's okay for a stage full of political leaders, one of whom could end up being the president of the united states, being silent when an american soldier is being booed. we don't believe in that. >> during his speech, president obama also called for the end of the defense of marriage act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. >> well, speaking of the president, ahead on news 4 today, where the first couple went for a romantic dinner.

some remarkable video out of australia. a small plane crashed into a ferris wheel. now, two children were trapped on the ride for about 90 minutes. and the pilot and passenger were stuck in their plane for about three hours. all this suspended 30 feet off of the ground. amazingly, no one is seriously hurt. and the pilot says he just didn't see the ferris wheel before hitting it. after weeks of testimony, we could learn tomorrow if amanda knox will be set free. a verdict in the americans appeals case is expected monday in italy.

the 24-year-old is trying to overturn her murder conviction for the death of her roommate. her defense team argued dna evidence used to convince her was unreliablement they have attacked her character. the case is just too close to call. turning now to decision 2012. could chris christie be moving one step closer to run something his advisers say they're trying to figure out how quickly they could get a presidential campaign up and running. the first republican primary is about three months away, but his team isn't sure if they could set up an effective campaign in iowa and new hampshire in time. they would have to recruit volunteers, set up a travel schedule, and of course raise money. christie has repeatedly said he is not running. but sources say he is reconsidering. on the subject of raising money, presidential hopeful michele bachmann is turning to her iphone for help. the minnesota congresswoman sent a mass text message to supporters reminding them every

even though he's president, barack obama still takes the time for date night with first lady michelle. the two celebrated their wedding anniversary a bit early last night. after speaking at the human rights campaign event, the couple went out to old town alexandria and dined at restaurant eve. the happy couple will be married 19 years on monday. and i know restaurant eve they actually tweeted that the first couple they have excellent palettes. >> there you have it. >> i don't think they would bash the first couple. >> i can't believe the president ordered white wine with steak. >> i was search to go see if we could find any pictures from other diners but nothing has

treasury department. 47 degrees in washington. mostly cloud are skies. but as is evidenced by the rainbow, there are tiny breaks of sunshine trying to get through. that's good news and bad news. who doesn't want to see a break of sunshine when it's already been a cloudy and freezing cold weekend. every a little bit we get helps to destabilize the atmosphere and increase our rain chances by a little bit later in the day. 41 in hagerstown. ravens game tonight, 8:00, here on nbc. if you don't have a ticket, lucky you. you'll be warm and dry. if you have a ticket and you're going to the ravens/jets game tonight, bundle up. it's going to be cold in that stadium tonight. not much in the way of rain out there just yet. little sprinkles north and east of hagerstown and a few spits and sprinkles through the western side of the district, fairfax and sprinkles south of fredericksburg. the majority of the rain is still way back across pennsylvania.

notice the trajectory on this. most of the heavier showers are going down through west virginia first before they have a chance to wrap back around to us. we will probably sneak out a couple of mostly rain-free hours through late morning, early afternoon. temperatures will struggle today to get up to the low 50s. that will be 20 degrees colder than average for the second day of october. there's that area of low pressure. it's spinning back through pennsylvania during the course of the day today. so we're not completely done with our rain chances yet. but as it comes back around here, we're watching a little bit of a break. one or two slivers of sunshine. that low will go back around us one more time, late tonight, into tomorrow, and finally pull off the jersey coastline and move out to sea. but that will be tuesday morning by the time the area of low pressure starts to spin out of here. so as a result it will be tuesday afternoon before our weather really starts to improve substantially. today, mostly cloudy, chilly. a few showers coming back into the forecast later this

tigers coach sweeney gets a nice gatorade bath. all right. navy at home looking to avenge last year's loss against air force in colorado springs. we pick this up late in the fourth. navy comes all the way back. down 8 with 25 seconds. now only down by two. chris proctor finds green. two-point conversion good. now we're in overtime. midshipmen start with the ball. proctor punches it in but says a few choice words, gets penalized. p.a.t. is backed up and it is blocked. navy is up 34-28. air force just needs a touchdown here. and the p.a.t. to win it. here we go. air force with the p.a.t.. here's the snap. the kick. and that's it. air force steals one at navy, wins by one. maryland in college park. daniel o'brien and the terps hosting in state townsend. up 14-3. o'brien finds dorsey.

monumental scare. the video you have to see this morning. a wind gust sends one of the washington monument inspectors flying. good morning and welcome to news 4 today. i'm angie goff. >> i'm john schriffen. it is sunday, october 2nd. looked like he was flying like spider-man out there. >> looks like he was having a good time. >> first, i want to check in with meteorologist chuck bell is here with cooler than normal temperatures. >> whoo, cooler than normal. how about 20 degrees cooler than average this time of year. our average high is 73 degrees. we'll be lucky if we get within 20 of that by later on this afternoon. maybe only minus 18. maybe. if we're lucky. outside on a very chilly sunday morning, mostly cloudy skies are in place. and the rainbow at the monument, there's a live picture.

and you can still make out the rainbow there. a full arc rainbow. top of the monument gleaming in bonus sunshine. that's what we'll call it for you this morning. enjoy every little ray you can see because today will be a more cloudy than sunny day, no doubt about it. temperatures are in the 40s right now. not much rain right around town at this moment, but there are showers across much of central and western pennsylvania. and with that upper level energy spinning back down in our direction later this afternoon, i just can't guarantee that you're not going to get rained on later on this afternoon. rainfall amounts nowhere near as steady or as much as we saw yesterday, but still plenty chilly. again, 73 is an average high this time of the year, and we'll be lucky to get up to the low and mid-50s. the jets at the ravens in an open-air stadium. 49 degrees at kickoff. luckily, that game is right here on nbc 4. so if you don't want to be cold, stay at home and watch it with

in just a few minutes, a supreme court tradition almost six decades old will begin. it's the annual red mass, a service held every year the day before the start of the supreme court's new term asking for god's blessing on the justices, diplomats and attorneys. the click archdiocese of washington oversees the service. it starts at 10 attica need ral of st. phaogt thaou the apostle. last year six justices attended. this year the high court could deliver a number of landmark rulings. the justices could possibly take up president obama's health care issue, gay marriage, abortion, immigration. 26 states have banded together and filed a lawsuit against the law say forcing people to buy insurance is unconstitutional. churches all over the world are accepting new members and

they have four legs. it's the blessing of the pets celebrating st. francis of assisi. dogs, cats, any animal can go to churches and get sprinkled with holy water. st. george's church, st. john's episcopal of virginia are holding special ceremonies blessing your pets. redskins are looking for their first road win of the season today. washington heads over to st. louis to face the 0-3 rams. redskin players and coaches say even though they are winless on the season, they're still a very tough team to beat. washington's offense is expected to do well this week as st. louis gave up 37 points to baltimore last week. the redskins and rams kick off at 1:00 this afternoon. we have a traffic alert this morning for drivers in northern virginia. beginning this weekend, you will no longer be able to take the left exit from the inner loop of the beltway to get to i-66 west.

now, you will have to use the right exit instead. the ramp is closed for the hot lanes project currently being built. vdot officials feel this will improve safety for drivers so they don't have to switch lanes as often. happening today, people in northern virginia a community there, are hoping to raise money for families who lost everything. you can see the damage left behind by flooding at the holly acres mobile home park in prince william county. more than 60 families lost their homes. today woodbridge community will hold a benefit concert to raise money. it begins at 12:00 and ends at 6:00 on b-thrifty shopping center on jefferson davis highway. coming up after the break, apple sure knows how to get the rumor mill churning. what the company is doing now. also, the adorable video you have to see this morning. the slow game of fetch. sometimes it takes a lot more longer for kids to get in school than others. >> he says that's because foster kids often get moved around from one home to another. and he's ready now to find out where he's going to be next. >> we got into a game of bowling and he turned out to be quite good. despite the challenges of being without a permanent family, jaden is really a great young man. >> jaden is a very delightful and lovable young man. he's small in stature but he's got a huge heart. really he enjoys sports. he loves basketball and football. he also loves to draw and listen to go music. >> he's already figured out what he'd like in a permanent adoptive family. >> they have to like playing board games and everything. >> okay. >> helping me with my homework. >> he had some wonderful gift, even a souvenir trophy shaped like a bowling pin.

gaithersburg. bethesda, 46 degrees. right in the district, 47. 46 waldorf, fredericksburg and strafrd cracked the 50-degree mark. here's a look at live doppler. nearest sprinkles are drying up across far northern maryland. we had a little bit of light rain and drizzle an hour ago. that also is drying up. now we have a little sunshine out. but all this moisture across pennsylvania is all wrapping around the same area of low pressure. so that low level moisture will come back in later on this afternoon. mostly cloudy here for the next couple of hours. clouds thickening back up this afternoon. and there will be a chance for more rain before our day is through. don't completely turn your back on rain chances for today. there's the big spin in the atmosphere. this area of low pressure is going to be making the loop-the-loop. it brought us quite a bit in the way of rain. finally, this area of low pressure will start to pull out late in the day tomorrow.
