was shot in a nearby wooded area. he was taken to the hospital and expected to be fine. a northern virginia woman says she fought off two men who tried to abduct her. she says she was ambushed around 4:30 friday morning along scott drive in fairfax. police say the 21-year-old woman was walking her dog when two men approached her and started grabbing her clothing. she got away, ran back to her house. so far, no arrested. federal safety inspectors return to a power plant to evaluate when it will be started. they went offline after the magnitude 5.8 earthquake in august. today, they told the public the plant's operator reacted properly after the earthquake. they also said there were very little damage. the nrc did not give a timetable for when they would allow them

they can find them. hundreds of new officers will be hitting the streets. today, for the first time in a year, a new class of 35 recruits began their training at the police academy. funding by the gray administration is expected to add 300 more officers by next year. while the department is still able to handle the call volume, the new officers will help strengthen the force. >> crime is down. closure rates are up. they are indicators we are okay. we don't want it to keep going down. this will get us back to the strength of 3900 and keep moving forward. the new officers will take to the streets in april. who is that sleeping on my sofa? that is a question two maryland students were asking themselves. an uninvited guest was snoozing in their apartment. pat collins is live in col ins

the incident occurred two months before she threw her 2-year-old granddaughter off a tyson's mall walk way. i'm so, so sorry for all the wrong i have done. i love you all from the bottom of my heart. it was the second suicide attem attempt. she's pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. she killed a little girl to get even with her son-in-law whom she resented for getting her teenage daughter pregnant out of wedlock. her worsening meantal health led to the crime, she was insane. a former public defender recently won a guilty by insanity case. >> the best way to explain it was she was in sane at the time of the offense. a grandmother wouldn't do this

out of evil. we live in a world where she was suffering. i'm sure she regrets it and was not sane at the time she did this. >> reporter: she suffered bouts of depression for a decade. her family financial troubles center into a tail spin. defense attorneys asked the long time therapist what did the second suicide attempt tell you. it told me she continued to be severely depressed and was spiraling down. she never displayed that behavior before. the final witnesses mental health experts are expected to come to the stand tomorrow. coming up on news 4 at 6:00, i'll tell you what she said to her therapist about her 2-year-old granddaughter. police are investigator a double stabbing in the chevy chase section of d.c. it happened just after midnight

on connecticut avenue near nebraska avenue. a man and woman were found suffering from stab wounds. both transported to the hospital. no word on their conditions. police tell us the suspect has been taken into custody. they are not releasing information about the suspect or what may have led to the attack. the terror suspect author y authorities say wanted to fly remote controlled model planes into the pentagon and capital pleaded not guilty. the 26-year-old was charged with attempted to destroy a building with explosives and receiving explosive materials. he was caught in an fbi sting operation where he thought he was communicating with al qaeda operatives. he wanted to attach explosives to model airplanes. a representative from at&t and the doctor who treated michael jackson at the hospital took the stand for the

judges handle domestic abuse complaints. chris gordon reports on this. >> reporter: these are some of the 25 volunteers monitoring cases in montgomery county district court where victims ask a judge for a protective order, restraining an abusive spouse from approaching the victim or threatening violence. >> i'm a former law professor. i'm a lawyer. i have been in courtrooms where judges have their own thing. in domestic violence cases, women are victims and they come in and they are victimized by some judges. >> reporter: in the past six months, they have monitored 642 cases. they say most judges do a good job. four judges were impatient or rude. >> judges are sometimes insensitive to petitioners. they do a lot of things right. we are more focused on fixing

the system than talking about specific judges. >> reporter: 16% of the women who come to court seeking protection don't speak english and can't follow what is going on in court. the group is asking a short video be prepared in english and spanish to help victims understand the process of seeking a protective order. >> we are recommending it be in spanish because we have a high percentage of domestic violence victims speaking in spanish. >> reporter: keeping victims and abuse abusers separated in court. make it clear that it is a crime to violate a protective order. they say some judges have already started using these suggests. in montgomery county, chris gordon, news 4.
