good morning and welcome, everyone to news 4 midday. i'm barbara harrison. it's wednesday, october 5th, 2011. we just learned of another aftershock in louisa county. this was centered around mineral and louisa county. there have been aftershocks since the quake that hit last month. however, this is the first aftershock in well over a week.

amanda knox is enjoying her first day at home in seattle. she is hoping to have a little alone time with her family. >> i am really overwhelmed right now. i was looking down from the airplane and it seemed as if everything wasn't real. >> knox left italy one day after an italian appeals court overturned her murder conviction. the american student and two others were charged in the murder of her british roommate, meredith kercher. her conviction was overturned because of faulty dna evidence. knox kept a journal. she had a list of her life goals if she was going to stay in prison. her other, her goals if she was going to be released. >> what is important to me is just saying thank you to everyone who has believed in me, who's defending me and supporting my family. my family is the most important thing to me right now and i just

want to go be with them. >> knox's family lawyer made a stop on the "today" show this morning. he said now that amanda is home, she have to decide if she will remain in the public eye or step back out of the spotlight. >> she will have to make these decisions going forward and i can tell you, i am amazed how strong she is and how healthy she seems. >> italian prosecutors say they plan to appeal the ruling to italy's highest court. and right now millions of kids are nationwide after they ditched the school buses and got to school the old-fashion way. they walked. it's all part of international walk to school day. many of the kids are right here in our area. melissa is in maryland where the governor is going to make an announcement. good morning, melissa. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. any minute now you can see all

of these safe routes to school programs at 13 prince georges county schools and it's all about getting students to do more walking. >> it's walk to school day. >> reporter: hundreds of students in tacoma and hundreds across the county, pounding the pavement wednesday morning. parents and police officials by their sides. >> it's a nice treat. >> reporter: for 5-year-old girl, walking to her kindergarten class is nothing new. it's one of the best parts of her day. >> because i like walking with my daddy. >> when we walk, we learn a lot of things. we meet people along the way. >> reporter: across the nation, there are 3,000 walk to school events. 40 countries are taking part. the tacoma mayor attached reflect fors to backpacks. >> walking is fun.

it reduces congestion on the roads. >> reporter: money that they got in 2007 for the safe route to school programs, this sidewalk is holding events for bike and skateboard safety. these students in mckinly, where they started out with stretches and a healthy breakfast. >> we want to keep walking to get our grades ready and our energy started. so we could get ready for the day. >> reporter: since these safe route to school programs launched in 2007, schools around maryland received $16,000 to enhance walkability. today, anthony brown unveiling another $1.2 million in grant money for 13 prince george's county schools. >> it's healthy to walk and safe a walk. >> reporter: some not as

thrilled about walk to school day. >> i hate walk to school day. >> reporter: but for 5-year-old ava, she can hardly contain herself. >> i get to run. >> reporter: you're running to school on walk to school day? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: do you think that's allowed? >> yes. >> reporter: such a cutie. she says she loves to walk to school. i said, housh have you been walking to school? you're only 5. she said, for the past 13 years. i thought that was funny for a 5-year-old to say. the lieutenant governor you can see behind me, he's just arrived and le take the podium in just a second, giving that $1.2 grant to prince george's county schools. back to you. >> did you walk to school as a child, melissa? >> i did. when i was little i did not walk to school. i walked to school today which was actually quite a workout for me. >> i walked to school all 12 years. >> good for you.

and radar review, we do not have any clouds to speak of around our areas we'll see a high temperature today of 75 degrees. not looking too shabby for the remainder of the week. it's going to be breezy. we'll talk more about the seven-day forecast and when i think we could have our next chance of rain around here. >> veronica, thank you. we'll see you here shortly. crews are inspecting the washington monument. engineers completed their survey and are now trying to figure out how to take off the netting. engineers have been prop peling down the monument to check for damage from the quake in august. the cathedral has been closed for repairs since the earthquake. it will reopen on november 12th.

it caused damage to parts of the cathedral's ceiling. the work could take $25 million to complete. that's a hefty price but washingtonians say it's work that must be done. >> it's an icon in the city. i don't anticipate really having a problem with getting it. >> the cathedral has begun an aggressive campaign. >> well, today the jury will hear arguments of the fairfax woman hearing arguments of her granddaughter. she said that she did not know what she was doing when she dropped her off a sky walk last november. defense experts testified that she was diagnosed with depression. prosecutors say that she knew right from wrong and that she was acting out of anger for her

son-in-law getting her daughter pregnant. she faces up to life in prison if convicted. well, today aruban authorities will take a team of cadaver dogs back out to search for that maryland woman that disappeared two months ago. the first dogs turned up empty handed. the guy that she was with on the island, gary giordano, is still be held in jail. he denies any wrongdoing. police are asking for your help catching the man who attacked a woman inside her kitchen. montgomery county police have released this composite sketch take a look at it. the attack happened in silver spring. the man came in through a sliding glass door and grabbed the woman from behind, threw her to the floor and tried to take

her clothing off she fought back and he ran away. if this looks like someone you know, police have asked to you give them a call. today we're looking at the progress being made of fixing the escalators at the metro station. crews are removing the old escalators at the station and metro already replaced two at foggy bottom. the last one will be up and running next year. coming up, a deadly workplace shooting in california. plus, the ntsb is in new york right now trying to figure out what caused a helicopter to crash in the east river. we'll take a look at the frantic rescue effort and what might have gone wrong. also coming up, police have wrapped up a news conference about an infant taken from her home. what they are now asking the

in cupertino, california, there was a shooting at a meeting. the person who fired the shots has not been found but there are many -- as many as two other police scenes in this whole area. reports say that the gunman may have an ak-47 assault-style rifle with him. right now, this is a story that

we will continue to follow throughout the morning. right now, the ntsb is holding a news conference into an investigation of how a sightseeing helicopter went down in the east river. a woman was celebrating her 40th birthday with her family. within seconds, the helicopter had trouble. it began spinning out of control and went into the river upside down, propeller first. >> the helicopter spined two or three times. that time of failure can be recovered from if proper emergency procedures are followed. >> the woman, celebrating her birthday, australian resident, was found dead still in the helicopter about an hour after the crash. three of the passengers were pulled from the water and the pilot was able to swim from the shore. and new today, president obama signed a temporary spending bill into law early this morning. the white house said that the

president signed it just after midnight. it will keep the government funded through november 18th and $2.65 billion will be sent to fema. it has been stretched thin because of several national disasters. budget battles are taking their toll on congress, at least on their reputations in the eyes of their constituents. just 14% approve of the job that congress is doing. that's according to a washington news poll. 62% of people polled said they strongly disapprove of congress and 20% somewhat disapprove of what lawmakers are doing. this crosses party lines. 18% of the democrats, 13% of republicans and 13% ever independents approve of congress' performance. and now to election 2012.

hardly any clouds are to be found across the area. you have to go to western maryland for that. on the radar and here's the reason that we got the dry air around the area. big area of high pressure. to the west sitting at indiana. it's going to be headed this way over the next couple of days. we'll have sunshine by day and clear skies by night. nice and starry. getting up to 75 degrees and frederick, 70s. again, breezy afternoon on tap. so for your afternoon, nice and warm. 72 to 75 degrees. we're dry today.

a lot of folks have been talking about the lawn and what can they do? with all of this dry weather, you've got to feed the lawn and get it ready for the winter. right? with the dry weather that we're going to have through, take a look at your good night wake-up forecast, we drop down to about 75 degrees. forecast is not just dry for the week but we're going to be dry for the weekend. and the week will feature even higher temperatures, mid-70s for saturday and upper 07s for sunday. that is more like a summertime warmth around here and columbus day is looking dry. so, you know, barbara, i've been looking at my plants, the tropical ones. they are trying to hang on. i don't want to move them inside just yet. but some of this warm weather will certainly be helping and, of course, the sunshine by day, the nice, cool nights, that's

you're going to have one large eggplant, four medium onions, two cloves of chopped garlic, half a cup of olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. a can of chopped tomatoes. half of parsley and walk us through the steps here. >> first thing you want to do is slice your eggplant. you start by preparing the eggplant and chop it into circles as we've done here. if you want to take the salt it first and then pat dry. >> into thick circles? >> yes, thick circles, rough is

fine. you don't have to be perfect. and then what you would do is go ahead and we're going to pretend that this is boiling water. you would drop them into boiling water to let them soften up and cook a little bit. >> how long? >> three to five minutes. >> and then what is next? >> then what you want to do is prepare what we call the filling. >> okay. >> she already has that started here for you. >> you have the onions and green pepper and garlic sauteing right now and you want to -- >> the onions should be a little trans lucent. >> okay. >> and peppers are soft and then we'll put the tomato paste in the cans and add the garlic and saute it. >> we use two little cloves,

crews are trying to figure out how to take off the netting after inspectsing th the washington monument. engineers have been rappelling down the monument to check for damage caused by that earthquake in august. police and coroners will be taking the stand today in the conrad murray's manslaughter trial. murray's girlfriends were on the witness stand yesterday. nbc's jeff rosen has the story. >> reporter: that is dr. conrad

murray enjoying his vacation with nicole alvarez, and that's their son, born while murray was married to somebody else. around the same time prosecutors say dr. murray was dating two other women, sade anding, a cocktail waitress that he met at a stakehouse and michelle bella, a dancer at a club in las vegas. >> did he give you his telephone number? >> yes. >> reporter: prosecutors insin waited murray tried to impress the women. by bragging about his work with michael jackson. >> were you interested in that information? >> absolutely. >> and why is that? >> it's michael jackson. >> must have been pretty exciting? >> definitely. speechless when i met him. >> murray lived with alvarez, still does and paid her rent. murray even had the propofol delivered to her apartment, four

recognize the voices at all? >> yes. >> so it could have been. >> yes. >> reporter: prosecutors say that he was juggling a double life. >> prosecutors attacked his character by saying that he was too busy talking to his girl friends while he should have been watching michael jackson. >> that was jeff ross sen reporting. murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted. and right now, police say rescue crews are back searching the neighborhood in kansas city, missouri, of a baby kidnapped from her crib. she was last seen 10:30 monday night when she put her to bed. she didn't realize she was gone when lisa's father returned from work and couldn't find her. an amber alert has been issued but was canceled after 12 hours because no significant leads

triggered the alert. lisa's parents have been cooperative and they will continue their search at least until sunset. >> some prince george's county residents can't even sit on their porches at night without seeing blatant prostitution in their neighborhood. establishing prostitution-free zones there are. residents say this is what they are likely to see when they leave their homes to go to work in the morning or late in the evening. many of the pictures we showed cannot be shown on tv. every member of the community is subject to the brazen behavior of the prostitutes. >> the children are subjected to this because you have repair men, you know n. their trucks and vans coming out.

weather feature for the next few days. mid-70s today and more in the northeast wind tomorrow. that will keep us cooler. as we head into tonight, 61 degrees by 11:00 p.m. here's a look at your four-day forecast for the weekend. even better, mid-70s to upper 70s. maybe some neighborhoods getting around 80 degrees. columbus day is dry. i promise to say what is the next chance of rain. for at least the next seven we stay dry but next wednesday and thursday is looking like it will be wet. barbara? >> thanks, veronica. police are looking for the person who threw a bag of puppies in a landfill and left them to die. three puppies survived, though. six of the brothers and sisters did not survive. the puppies are not even a day old. a person on duty heard the puppies crying and called for help. it happened last month in king coun county georgia.

to her door and she had no idea what was going on. her daughter said you need to stay home for at least a little bit, don't go right into the office. i have a big surprise coming in. she was only vaguely with who i was and i showed up and she was floored. >> that's fantastic. you wanted her to be able to enjoy the outdoors, right? >> right. besides everything laura does for the veteran community, she is suffering from ms. from being outside in the sun, it really drains her. she's a really active outdoor person. so she has a very small little house and then an outdoor deck which is totally exposed to the elements. what we're doing for her is building her this beautiful three season room. >> let's take a look. >> yes. >> laura loves to spend time outside. the sun just drains her. some sort of porch -- >> well, there it is. tell us about it. >> that is the porch. fortunately, that's no longer in

sesame street is tackling hunger issues. a family struggles with having enough to eat on the show. it's called "growing hope against hunger." recent studies show that 17 million kids struggle with hunger here in the u.s. after yet another day of fruitless talks, the nba's season is in real jeopardy. representatives and owners left the meeting with what players call a wide gap between the two sides. because of the failed negotiations, the preseason is canceled and the first two weeks of the regular season could be canceled if a deal is not agreed on. the commissioner says if that happens, they will lose hundreds and millions of dollars. well, perhaps maybe one day

in just the dow started out earlier and we're up 40 points. a bit off session highs and green arrows across the board at least right now. the adp employment report show that growth is steady for the private sector and better than expectations for the month of september. it could suggest some upside for the private sector jobs portion of the government's nonfarm jobs report that comes out on friday. however t. could also be just a temporary boost from the conclusion of that verizon worker strike because manufacturing and construction employment fell. but then separately, a report fr christmas showed the number of planned layoffs jumped to the myiest level since april of 2009. now, the latest data shows that sector did slow but technically the readings still indicate an expansion, albeit by the slightest of margins. now, the federal reserve

released a report today saying that banks made big progress for packages that limit incentives for risky behavior. on average, senior executives have 60% of their compensation deferred, which is higher than the international guideline. however, the fed does believe that there is more work to be done. and drop in oil prices in recent months, finally bringing some release to the gas pump. aaa says that the gallon of average is averaging $3.41 nationwide. that's falling nearly a penny a day for the last four weeks. the slow in the economy has led to a decline in japan and europe and in developing countries. it's always a double-edge sword. we don't want to pay more for gasoline but we also don't want to see global slowing as a result. today our doctor is here to

to move on. what do you suggest? >> she actually indicated that this is the second time that he cheated on her. she really needs to think about whether she wants to remain in this relationship. clearly her husband is not demonstrating a level of respect for the marriage or for her. she needs to decide whether she wants to remain in the marriage. it's not necessarily wrong if she decides she wants to remain in the marriage. in fact, most people find that if they have a spouse that cheets on them will decide to stay in the marriage. if she can deal with this, if so, i willstrongly suggest that they see a marriage counselor. this particular woman it's contributing in the way that they need to be addressed in a couple setting. >> let's move on to parenting questions. a mom wrote in about merher

13-year-old son. he is one of the sweetist kids that will you meet but he worries about everything. how do you help a child who worries too much? >> reading this e-mail you could get a sense that this kid was really, really struggling. he worries about everything and actually from my reading of the e-mail, i think this boy actually suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder. he's coming home from school and a lot of people when they think of obsessive compulsive disorder, they think of hoarding or hand washing. but one thing that is common is needing constant assuring. he has a history of anxiety and that gives more evidence to the fact that he's probably dealing with anxiety disorder

particularly somebody that deals with cognitive behavioral disorder. that's going to be most helpful for her son. and a common problem for parents, my 3-year-old son recently gave up his pacifier and now wakes up every hour during the night screaming. any advice? >> be patient. try to find some sort of kids wake up on average six times in a night. he needs something to calm him down. the big answer, be patient, give it time. time now, 11:52, nbc is launching a new primetime news magazine.
