the largest and most powerful unions. >> they are fighting to make sure that the rich, the multibillionaires pay their fair share. we believe in that same concept. >> reporter: what started as a grass roots rally in this lower manhattan park two weeks ago, swelled into a nationwide movement. sympathy protests have been held in 50 cities from coast-to-coast. >> until we start coming together and acting out, no one is going to hear. no one is going to know it's going on. >> reporter: protesters united in frustrations and passion. >> this is the beginning of the people's revolution. >> reporter: a movement taking shape and labor experts say a step closer to turning inspiration into action. >> i think we are going to see a lot more politicians jumping the fray. >> reporter: protesters say they are prepared to stay here and camp out indefinitely.

and unemployed people who came to the capital demanding jobs. >> i am a home health care provider by trade. i'm used to taking care of the elderly. for three years i have been trying to get a job. i have been getting we'll call you. i have gotten that so much. i'm beginning to believe that's my middle name. >> reporter: under the banner, save the american dream, this coalition came together in support of occupy d.c. and to send a message to the lawmakers here on capitol hill. >> the entire american people are fed up with the financial interests and the corporations ruling washington. that's why you are seeing all these occupy washington, occupy new york because the american people want to see something happen here in washington. >> reporter: many of these people support the goals of occupy d.c. these demonstrators have been gathering here in washington since the weekend. some sleeping in mcpherson's

square. they will hold a rally and concert at freedom plaza thursday afternoon. today, dozens of the demonstrators took part in peace keeping training at a local church, working in groups devising ways to get their message out while avoiding violence and confrontations with police. >> we want to see the end of corporate rule. >> how long will occupy d.c. last? >> unpredictable. we are going to stay as long as we need to and as long as we can. we want to build a movement that can unravel this mess of corporate controlled government. >> reporter: occupy d.c. participants will gather here at 9:00 in the morning for registration. the concert and rally begins at noon, runs until 2:30. they will take to the street chanting and carrying signs to the white house. the chamber of commerce and marching along k street. back to you in the studio.

>> chris gordon, thank you. there was a different kind of protest in greece today. thousands of government workers walked off the job. they are protesting the government's plan to make deeper cuts in their salaries. it's one of the steps the government is thinking of to keep from defaulting on their loans. the strike cut down schools, public transportation and greek airports. on the other hand, optimism over the debt situation in europe helped move wall street higher. the dow was up 131 points to close at 10,939. the nasdaq closed up as well to finish at 2460. the s&p 500 ended up 20 points at 1144. good news about jobs helped to move the market higher. the trial of carmella dela rosa is going to the jury. in closing arguments, prosecutors say it was hate and revenge that drove her to throw

her 2-year-old granddaughter off the sky walk. defense says she's not guilty by reason of insanity. julie carey has the latest on the story. >> reporter: that is one of the four choices in front of the jury right now. guilty of first degree murder or second degree murder, not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. an even choice is how prosecutors describe her decision to throw her 2-year-old granddaughter off a sky walk. prosecutors told the jury dela rosa was angry at her place in the world, especially her son-in-law. the prosecutor said when things don't go her way, she gets rid of the problem, isolated herself or gets rid of the person. in this case, she threw the person off the bridge. in her video taped confession, she told detectives she saw jims

in the little girl. they urged jurors not to find her not guilty by reason of insanity. her deepening depression produced psychotic-like symptoms. this is not something she chose to do. it's going on inside her head. she could not control it. before closing arguments, the prosecutions mental health professional said it was geared at jealousy, not insanity. that's a conclusion after the psychologist spent ten hours interviewing the accused killer. he's the author of "inside the criminal mind." he was hired by the prosecution. she never got over the idea that her daughter got pregnant before married. she indicated she was angry at everyone and the baby. from her standpoint, nobody loved her much anymore. the baby was getting all the

attention and love. there was a certain jealousy. now the courtroom was crowded with spectators with closing arguments. the families came to court. the victims parents and the majority of the relatives sitting behind the prosecution. a handful of family and friends sitting behind carmella to show their support. the jury will deliberate until 6:30 then resume in the morning. >> thank you. d.c. police are looking for two men who went on a crime spree and crashed an suv into a home. the collision shook up an elderly woman in the home. derrick ward has more. >> reporter: when you live near a railroad line, you get used to loud noises then followed by quiet. >> i heard a big boom. i saw vapors. i saw the dust. we ran out the house. >> reporter: no train did this. it was a pair of armed robbers

desperate to get away. they got this far in their stolen suv after a hold up on lawrence street. >> they come upon three construction workers in the 2200 block of lawrence street, jumped out, robbed them at gunpoint. they both had guns. >> reporter: they clipped this chrysler and smashed into this home. there's cracks. >> there's cracks all over the house. i don't know if you can see here, but the chimney is now cracked. my mom and sister have gone downstairs in the basement. they see cracks in the basement. >> reporter: this isn't the first time a car ended up too close for comfort. >> two cars racing down the street and pushed my neighbor's car into my yard basically on my porch. >> reporter: miraculously no one was injured in all this. the woman at home was shaken up

they say he started shooting this morning after he became disgruntled at a meeting over safety. schools in the area are either closed or on lockdown. police continue to search for him. they have found his vehicle and four weapons inside. some of those who are wounded are still in the hospital. they are said to be in critical condition. police say they have no clear motive for why he started shooting. before his death, he talked about his upcoming tour and plans to build a children's hospital. today, jurors in the michael jackson trial heard those conversations for themselves. the words were recorded by dr. conrad murray, jackson's personal physician. we have the story. >> that audio recording be marked people's 96 for identification. >> reporter: jurors heard a

troubling recording six weeks before the singer died. on the recording, jackson was slurring and sounded incoherent talking about his upcoming shows saying it had to be phenomenal. [ inaudible ] >> at that point, jackson fell asleep and the recording stopped. meanwhile, on tuesday, three of murray's mistresses took the stand. the mother of his extramarital child whom he had propofol sent.

a dancer from a gentleman's club and a houston waitress to whom he was talking when he noticed jackson was unconscious. he was too busy talking to his girlfriends when he should have been watching michael jackson. he was living a double life, juggling a parade of women and a famous patient until it all came crashing down. dr. murray was checking e-mails on his phone in the hours before the singer's death. in downtown los angeles, stephanie stanton, news 4. a man that dr. martin luther king jr. called one of the most courageous freedom fighters died. he was one of the founders of the southern christian leadership council. he assisted equality and

organizing the freedom rights. during civil rights, his home was bombed, he was beaten and arrested time and time again. this morning, he died at a hospital in birmingham, alabama. he was 89 years old. a wildfire burning through central nebraska has been brought under control. one person injured in the fire. it started yesterday afternoon near the town of stapleton. the fire chief in that town believed the flames were sparked in a soybean field. one house and 26 acres of farmland were burnt. they estimate millions of dollars in crop losses. tourists are calling it the sea of clouds. the clouds sitting on top of the mountains. the area is a major tourist attraction. that is pretty dramatic.

fellow investigators are looking at home video of a helicopter crash. trying to figure out why the chopper went down in new york's east river. a british tourist was killed in the crash. it happened yesterday. she was in new york to celebrate her birthday. the national transportation safety board is examining looking into issues such as the weight of the helicopter and they are also looking at the fact of strong winds and whether they may have played a roll in the accident.

a desperate search in under way in kansas city, missouri for a 10-month-old baby girl who is missing. she was abducted from her crib monday night or tuesday morning. her mother put her to bed around 10:30 and her dad reported her missing overnight when he got home from work. they made a public plea for their daughter's safe return. >> please, bring her home. our two other boys are waiting for her. please, drop her off anywhere. we don't care. somewhere safe where she can come home, please. >> more than 300 law enforcement personnel searched and repelled down nearby cliffs. they say there are no good leads in this case. >> the widow of a navy s.e.a.l. who was killed in action is missing her husband's wedding band. she launched a facebook campaign to find it.

wall street protest. jury deliberations begin. hate drove her to drop her 2-year-old granddaughter to her death from an elevated parking bridge last november. the defense says dela rosa is not guilty by reason of insanity. d.c. police are looking for two men who went on a crime spree and crashed an suv into a house this morning. the men held up three construction workers at gunpoint and robbed them. nobody inside the home was seriously injured. it's been nearly a month since a man dressed as a woman was murdered near his northwest d.c. apartment. >> the circumstances that led to his death and who is responsible remain a mystery. the victim was found on the sidewalk in the 2600 block of 11th street. today, his partner offered a possible motive. pat collins has the report.

cracks, the 127-year-old landmark is still structurally sound. they have to finish the report before crews get to work on repairs. a construction project in the adams morgan part of town has been going on for a long time. businesses are most upset by that. the project is blocking access to their stores and causing them to lose a lot of money. darcy spencer has more on call to the district leaders to take action. >> reporter: the sign says adams morgan is open for business. all the construction may force businesses to close their doors. this is the sound of progress. the street being dug up. sidewalks being replaced. it's all happening on 18th street in adams morgan. some shop owners say it's driving them out of business. how is this affecting your business? >> it's very bad. >> reporter: he owned a small grocery store here for 13 years.
