>> security guards fire pepper spray on protesters outside the air and space museum. protesters say they had no warning. an officer felt threat ened by crowd out of control. rick perry faces scrutiny for what one of his biggest supporters had to say. families gathered to say good-bye to some of america's finest as they deploy to afghanistan. good evening, everyone. we begin with the uproar outside the air and space museum today. hordes of protesters gathered at the entrance. the smithsonian said the crowd got out of control. at least 50 people reported burning symptoms from the pepper spray. darcy spencer has more. >> reporter: this youtube video shows the mayhem following a protest at the national air and space museum that resulted in a

smithsonian security officer deploying pepper spray. c.j. said the group was here to demonstrate against the use of unmanned drones. >> before we got inside, i was just behind people. and then i was getting a stream of mace in the face. they didn't say anything to me. they just opened it up. >> people got maced immediately by the smithsonian security guard. >> reporter: a spokesman said a crowd of up to 200 protesters with signs and banners tried to enter the museum on the mall side. those items are not allowed inside. she said one security officer was pinned against the wall, another officer deployed his pepper spray. they left tourists sitting on the front steps. no way to get in. >> all of a sudden i was just a couple of feet from the door and people started running. and my eyes and my throat and my nose started stinging. it was pepper spray.

>> reporter: the group leading the demonstration was joined by protesters from occupy d.c. >> they let me go. they took me downstairs, and said i was resisting arrest. i said that's absurd. i'm highly trained in peaceful nonviolent protests. >> reporter: they confirm several people were treated for the effects of pepper spray. >> i got pepper spray in my mouth and my eyes. i had to be treated by the emt because i had chest pain. >> some of those protesters were part of occupy d.c., a group that grew in numbers today. they gave fiery speeches at freedom plaza and dozens took part in a flash mob dance at mcpherson square. it's an offshoot of the occupy wall street movement. protesters say they plan to continue marching until they see the government make a move for

change. a fight involving bleach at a maryland walmart sent 19 people to the hospital today. this happened about 11:00 this morning in southern baltimore county. two women were arguing in the cleaning aisle when one started throwing blich, ammonia and other chemicals on the other. the two had ap ongoing fut. jefferson was arrested charged with first-degree assault. aside from her intended target, more than a dozen walmart customers and workers were injured by the chemicals. >> we were starting to get a lot of calls throughout the store for a lot of different patients that were suffering irritants, you know, to the eyes, respiratory passages. so we decided to evacuate the store, call for hazardous materials unit and a number of medic units. >> the walmart was reopened about two hours later, after the chemicals were cleaned up and the store had been ventilated. people in bethesda investigating an apparent murder/suicide. they found the bodies late this

morning in the house just off river road. investigators went to the home after a relative had not been able to contact one of the dead people here for a couple of days. the bodies of martin sean o'toole and tracy were found in a bedroom. casey anthony invoked the fifth amendment today in a deposition. she's being sued by a woman named ze nid a gonzalez. in 2008 anthony told police her daughter had been kidnapped by what detectives later learned was a fick tigsal nanny. it was videotaped in florida. another loss for mitt romney and rick perry. ron paul took the top spot here in washington. herman cain was a close second. the texas governor is trying to

bounce back after controversial comments on friday by one of his supporters. >> mitt romney's a good, moral person but he's not a christian. mormonism is not christianity. it's always been considered a cult. >> mitt romney did not directly address the issue. sarah palin and herman cain both appeared in lynchburg, virginia today. palin was speaking at a women's conference. more than 175 members of the d.c. air national guard are headed to afghanistan. tonight was their sendoff ceremony at andrews air force base. the 113th wing of the d.c. air national guard will be stationed at bagram airfield. it marks the first time an air national guard unit is sending f-16 fighter jets to afghanistan. we spoke with a couple going through their first deployment.

pretty tense moments as a small plane made an emergency landing in the pacific ocean friday afternoon. the pilot said he was low on fuel and would probably have to

ditch the plane in the water off the coast of hawaii. he managed to pull the 65-year-old pilot from the water. he was not hurt. 15 kids in prince william county, virginia, honored today for helping to save lives through their 911 calls. firefighters held a special ceremony, and all of the emergencies happened over the last year. these kids ranged in 8 to 13 at the time. one thing they all had in common, their ability to stay calm. one was 10-year-old isabela. she called 911 when her mother went into premature labor. >> i was a little bit scared. but calm at the same time. i didn't know what was going to happen. i thought she was in pain. i thought is she going to be okay. is the baby going to be okay. yeah. >> prince william county gives out its making the right call awards every year. still to come tonight, why a major theater chain is

today. his contributions to the game of football were legendary. he played a pivotal role in the 1970 merger. davis owned the raiders since 1966 winning three super bowl titles. the hall of famer died at his home in oakland. he was 82 years old. college football, tough day for the terps against georgia tech. andrew ganella suffered a compound fracture in his leg. that's according to the "washington times." also, starting quarterback daniel bryan was benched. yellow jacket fans buzz. terrapins playing their first road game of the season. 7-3 georgia tech. terps having trouble making tackles. smith gets in for the touchdown. yellow jackets 14-3 lead. right to georgia tech's neely. ramsey edsell decides to bench o'brien. terps down 21-3.
