tonight, a family wants to know who killed jamar. >> good afternoon, i'm wendy rieger. >> the deadline came and went for the protesters from occupy d.c. to clear out the plaza. some organizers say they are not going anywhere. in the past hour, some representatives met with police. organizers say they are ready to be arrested now. chris gordon is live at headquarters tonight with the latest. chris? >> reporter: well, the organizers of this event here at freedom plaza are at this hour meeting with representatives of the u.s. park police to determine what happens next now that the four-day permit for the use of freedom plaza expired. before they left, the organizers told this crowd they are going nowhere until they are ready to leave. the organizing group took down the stage where they led rallies, made speeches.

they cleaned up freedom plaza. their four-day permit expired last night and were told to leave by 2:00 p.m. >> we haven't gotten threats. we don't think they are going to come in. doing that would be a big mistake. it would result in more people coming to support us. >> reporter: people piled backpacks and bed rolls for safekeeping if they are taken to jail. they have written the phone numbers on their arms to reach legal representatives. they intend to stay. a disabled vietnam veteran is protesting against the wars in afghanistan and iraq. the possibility of your getting arrested? >> 100%. >> reporter: meaning? >> 100% that i will get arrested. >> reporter: do you want to be

arrested? >> yes. >> reporter: they are standing over their tent to see if they will spend another night here. >> we're here until it ends. i came here without enough money to get home. i'm here until they drag me out. >> reporter: a park police officer and park ranger met briefly with organizers. >> they wanted to speak in private. we said why can't we speak in public. we believe in transparency. they said they would call me on the telephone. >> reporter: are they asking you to leave? >> no. >> reporter: how long with you stay? >> until we are ready to leave. >> reporter: organizers in charge of october 2011 and the people here at freedom plaza are now meeting in private talks with u.s. police to determine if anything has changed. we will continue to monitor the situation. we're live from freedom plaza,

back to you. >> chris, thank you. tensions are still running high on the streets of cairo following the violent clashes. 26 people have died now and 300 wounded. it marks the worst violence since mubarak was forced from power in february. the cabinet is holding meetings to figure out what to do next. the white house condemned the violence and is calling for restraint on all sides. it was a heart breaking weekend for members of the pet community. a 17-year-old was found stabbed to death in the playground of the 900 block of quincy street. pat collins joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: jimmy was 17 years old, riding a bike home from a basketball game when he was murdered in this alley right up there. his mother wants to know who.

his mother wants to know why. >> my hope is somebody would come up and tell me what happened to my son. he was a sweet boy. he ain't involved with nobody. >> reporter: tears from the mother of a teenager murdered by a playground in the pet worth section northwest. >> he was a good boy, went to school and stuff. i just raised him his whole life and now he gone. >> reporter: the victim a student at cardoza high school. he was 17 years old. the scene, the raymond rec center. saturday, jamar was playing basketball here. as nighttime fell, the game broke up. a short time later, jamar freeman found stabbed to death in an alley behind the playing

fields. walter robinson brought flowers to that spot today. he lives in the neighborhood. he knew jamar. >> it's a shame that young people are dying like this. it's uncalled for. >> reporter: jama's grandmother said he had been in trouble before but he tried to turn his life around. >> he was on the right track. i think that tore him apart, too. he just, you know, after that he kind of fell down. stopped. >> reporter: hanging with the wrong people? >> right. and that does happen. >> reporter: so what was the motive here? was it drugs? was it gangs? was it something else? the motive is still unknown. we know this, no one should die this way, no one. no one should die this young. jim, back to you. >> pat collins live in northwest d.c. a tragic day for folks there.

pat, thank you. a man in virginia is facing charges of bigamy. he has four wives in four cities. isaac married a woman in chesapeake in 2000. in 2008 another woman then the next year a third woman in hopewell, his fourth in virginia beach. he pled guilty to bigamy in chesterfield in april. he faces similar charges in the other counties. northern virginia residents recovering are looking for federal help tonight. bob mcdonald -- rain and floods destroyed more than 100 homes and businesses many of which are in the holly acres home community. he's seeking federal aid to help all virginia localities reduce the impact of future disasters. well, after a deliciously

>> it's absolutely gorgeous. i was thrilled when i found out i was coming here. >> reporter: it will be dedicated this sunday morning in a paired down program of music and speakers including president obama and members of the king family. the august hurricane irene forced organizers to postpone a grander ceremony expected to draw 250,000 people or more. were you going to come august 28th? >> definitely. definitely. i was very disappointed we had the hurricane at the time. >> reporter: are you going to be here this sunday? >> yes, i am. >> reporter: are you going to get up early? >> i don't know how early i'm going to get up. i have to go to church first. then i'll be here. >> reporter: a smaller crowd of 50,000 is expected as services get under way. only 5, 000 chairs will be set up for invited special guests down from 30,000 in august.

eggies, evenly coat the top and inside of the bottom pieces. how is this working for you, joyce? >> more trouble than i expected. >> after we oiled them up, we assembled them. now, we have to crack the egg into the top. whoa, whoa, whoa. >> mine is all over the counter, too. that hole is kind of small. >> once we had the eggs inside the eggies system and the lids back on. we put them in warm water and watched them float. the water started boiling but something didn't look right. some of the egg was oozing into the water. we left them alone until the cooking time was complete. time to take them out and let them cool. to release the egg, hold the bottom half upside down and squeeze until the egg is free. >> it's gooked.

77 in manassas. 77 near cambridge. temperatures around 78. rockville 83 degrees. gaithersville not reporting. the temperature is close to the 80 degree mark, too. camp springs 77. down toward honey town, current temperature, 75. doppler radar is showing no rain across the region. as we widen out, this is where the rain is. there's a lot of rain to the south. a tropical system making its way across northern portions of florida and georgia. that system brought upwards of eight inches of rain in orlando and cocoa beach, florida. now, heavy rain in georgia and central georgia now. that rain is going to make its way to the north over the next 24 to 48 hours. this is what to expect. notice now, we are dealing with the cloud cover. we have seen clouds move in during the afternoon. they will continue to move in

throughout the overnight hours. tomorrow, tomorrow around noon, no clouds. or no rain. we are not talking rain. we are talking the cloud cover. the clouds will continue to thicken. they continue to lower during the afternoon. then we'll start to see the rain moving in. 5:30 in the morning, this will be on the lighter side. this is wednesday morning. during the afternoon on wednesday, everybody sees the rain. some areas could see heavy rain especially the folks to the west. i think the mountains have the best chance to see significant, maybe one to two inch rainfall totals. washington a half inch to inch at the most. this is not going to be a huge rain event but one you will notice. high clouds. 66 to 76 degrees. tomorrow morning, the numbers are going to be milder than they have been. 54 to 62. could see a little bit in the way of fog. tomorrow afternoon, cloudy and mild.

teachers of prince william county elementary school saw a deer jump through a window. it was recorded on the school's surveillance camera. we are at the school to tell you what happened next. >> reporter: well, there's a lot of excitement here at the elementary school. see the camera you were just talking about? that's it. that's the one that captured the deer leaping through the window. it came across the courtyard and leaped through the window. it's boarded up now. it's going to be replaced

tonight. let's roll video of what happened. it's hard to see, but it shows a father of a student looking in the window after the deer leaped in the classroom. seconds later, it jumped out of the same window and ran away. the principal believes it saw its own reflection and it scared him. a terrified art teacher was inside, ran out of the classroom. the principal is glad it is over and is shocked by it. >> totally surprised. this has never happened before. we hope it never happened again. >> reporter: what is your reaction when you look at that video? >> i'm spell bound. i have no idea what would prompt an animal to want to enter a building. we have them on the premise. they live behind and around the school, but they have never tried to enter the school before. >> reporter: this is a first. well, the school is going to have to replace the window. they have to put in a new one.

were you crying? yeah. a fast 4ward through the headlines. d.c. police looking for a killer after a student was found stabbed to death. he was found in an alley saturday. no motives or suspects. antiwar demonstrators are meeting with police to decide what is next for the protest. their four-day permit to protest expired last night. park police gave them until this afternoon to clear out. protesters say they are not leaving and are ready to be arrested. >> the king memorial will be dedicated on sunday. hurricane irene forced them to postpone. the ceremony begins at 9:00. metro is adding trains and

tom, there must be plenty of times when people simply forgot to if your honor off their phones, mp 3 players while in flight. we don't hear about accidents and problems. what kind of threat do electronics pose on planes? >> it's a great question. we all have these devices, ipod, ipad, blackberry, cell phone, you name it. do they interfere with a plane's avianics or radios? the truth is, yes, they do. is it significant enough to cause an accident? not that they know of. we went to boeings test center. we laid them out and played them and scanned the room for interference. we were picking up significant interference. it comes from the screen itself and the computer chips. a separate issue is turning on the cell phone. the screen is a big, big problem.

is it enough of a problem to interfere with the plane and cause it to crash? investigators don't know for sure, so they don't want to take chances. they know it causes interference. could it be fatal? potentially, yes, it could be. have there been cases in the past where it's been concretely linked to an accident? they are not sure. they have stories of this but never been able to prove it. it's like chasing the ghost in the machine. it could be difficult to pin it down. that's why they ask you to turn them off during take off and landing. >> just to play it safe. >> we'll look forwards to the report tond an "nightly news." we'll have more on the dangers of in-flight devices. it's coming up at 7:00. it's often a rural problem, animal cops are finding more and more cases of fighting and cruelty thanks to tips from

neighbors. dog fighting and cock fighting. elaine reyes joins us for more. >> reporter: this is something they are hearing about more and more because it doesn't require a lot of space. they can find them in parks and alleys. they are not hearing of organized rings, so to speak. they are taking everyone's tips very seriously. >> reporter: this rooster lives on a nice big farm. less than a year ago, he was kept inside a home on montello avenue. >> the neighbor saw a rooster. in d.c., all livestock animals are illegal. the neighbor reported it was illegal. >> reporter: the 38-year-old used it to fight other roosters taking it to another location outside the district. >> from there, once the animal was picked up, they realized the spurs on the rooster were filed

into a point. once the officer noticed that, he turned it in for investigation for cock fighting. >> reporter: the neighbor said he never heard or saw the rooster. he spent time in a federal prison before getting deported to guatemala. >> he was a nice guy. he went to work every day of the week. he had three children. he was a really nice guy. >> reporter: across town, an investigation on illegal guns led to a dog fighting arrest. earlier this year, police tipped off the humane society to a home on clay street northeast. they arrested this man for housing three dogs for fighting. they found dog fighting paraphernalia. all three were american pit bulls. only one was adoptable. it now has a forever home. >> it occurs everywhere. it can occur in small locations and outside in parks. it's happening everywhere. they are doing a good job of

keeping it from us. we are doing our best to figure out where they are doing it so we can shut them down. >> reporter: as you can imagine, the vet bills for all the animals in our story ran into the thousands of dollars and was taken care of by the washington humane society. back to you. >> they do a great job. thanks. members of p.e.t.a. held a silent protest outside the d.c. convention center today in defense of monkeys. they donned monkey masks and signs as they stood outside the meeting for the association of the united states army. it's holding the national meeting. the army lab in maryland uses live monkeys the simulate the effects of a nerve agent. >> it's a crude show and tell exercise where they inject a monkey with an overdose, watch

away from diet drinks because of their girly reputation. hopefully this will fix that trend. protesters are deciding what they are going to do next. chris. >> reporter: they just received word from the organizers of the event here at freedom plaza. the event which had their permit expire last night. they were told as of 2:00 this afternoon they could be arrested. shortly after 2:00. the organizers were summoned to police headquarters. they just came back to the general assembly. they made this announcement. park police and park officials are extending or offering to extend the permit to occupy d.c. and october 2010 to extend it for a period of four months. this was originally a four-day permit to use freedom plaza. now, the organizers are saying

it appears we are negotiating from a position of power. the park police realize it is not in their best interest to shut us down or arrest us. they actually ask, do you need us to come and arrest you to make your point? the people said no, we are not looking to be arrested over a permit issue. we are looking to have our issues of wartime economy, a weak economy, corporate greed articulated. right now, they are meeting in groups to decide if they are going to accept the offer of the u.s. park police to extend the permit for occupy d.c. and october 2011 for four months. that's the latest. back to you. >> chris, we heard earlier from one of the people you interviewed wanting to be arrested. do you think some are disappointed they are not going to have the handcuffed picture they were hoping for? >> reporter: some wanted to be arrested. others say they don't give

hakeem joins us now with more on the caps. >> reporter: a huge game for the capitals. they win their season opener thanks to a game-winning goal from mike green. he enters his seventh nhl season. he turns 27 years old on wednesday. he celebrates his birthday in pittsburgh. he said he's not too thrilled about that. he is ecstatic when he scores an overtime goal. >> yeah, it's a little different than a goal during the regular time, but you know when it happens you are overwhelmed and it's a really good feeling. you feel like you have won it for your team. it's come down to your shot. it's a cool experience but it's quite the experience when all the guys come out and swarm you and punch you in the face and mess up your helmets. it's also part of the experience, i guess, too.

>> you love getting punched in the helmet? >> not really. usually you duck in the crowd and try not to let the guys smoosh you in the face. >> reporter: how miserable is it for you to sit back and watch? >> i have never experienced sitting out that long. it's frustrating. being in and out of the lineup, it was hard to get flow. anytime you are out and taking time off to get back, you know, you don't have your feeling like you do during the whole time you are playing. it was difficult to get a flow of production scoring goals or point wise. you are always worried about your injuries. the hardest part of the season is getting through healthy. that's my goal this year. >> for this to be a successful season, what has to happen? >> we have to win a cup. that's the bottom line. that's my answer. >> reporter: what is different about this team than previous

teams? >> i think our attitude and commitment level. i think that, you know, it's something we addressed over the summer. we are all going to be committed. not that we weren't in the past but we can take it to a whole new level and i think that's imperative that collectively as a group we do that and give ourselves a great chance. on paper we are a great team. that only goes so far. you have to produce on the ice. >> reporter: which one of your teammates will have a break-out year? >> i think marcus will. he showed a lot of character last year especially at a young age. he showed his skill, how good he is. it sort of came at the end of the season and i think it's going to flow into this season. he's playing tonight, so he'll show us. >> reporter: tonight you played tampa bay. they swept you out of the postseason last year.
