the u.s. park police came by and asked organizers for a meeting. the organizers went to u.s. park police headquarters and they got what was, indeed, a surprising offer. an offer of an extension for four months. now, what they are going to have to do is they are going to have to agree to accommodate other groups, for example when martin luther king's memorial is dedicated, there's going to be a group marching. occupy d.c. will have to be flexible. tonight, they are holding a general assembly to determine if they are going to accept these terms. as they have said to their members here, it appears we are negotiating from a position of strength. to give you background on this, people have been camping out on freedom plaza. they have been in tents, which remain illegal. but it appears the u.s. park police have no appetite or

desire to arrest anybody. we talked to a number of people today who said they are ready to be arrested. then this development announced minutes ago by kevin. here is what he said. >> they are willing to offer an extension of the permit. it can be -- we could decide how much we want to do that. the maximum is up to four months. [ applause ] >> part of what we need to achieve is taking the system and bringing them on our side. it feels like it's happening. i'm pleased with our relationship with the police in d.c. >> there's one question they asked, which i thought was interesting. is it necessary for you to achieve your goals to be arrested in freedom plaza. i said no, really, permits are not what we are here to fight about. we are here to fight about ending war. fighting about a permit is not what we want to be arrested for.

the murder suicide. a teenager is found stabbed to get near a playground in northwest d.c. he's 17 years old. the discovery was made in the 900 block of quincy. relatives want answers. pat collins is live with this. pat? >> reporter: wendy, jennifer freeman has four sons. the young man killed in this alley was her youngest. she wants to know who did it. she wants to know why. >> our hope is somebody could come up and tell me what happened to my son. he was a sweet boy. he wasn't involved with nobody. >> reporter: tears from the mother of a teenager murdered nearby a playground. the victim jamar freedom, a student at cardoza high school. he was 17 years old.

the scene, the raymond rec center 10th and quebec street. saturday, he was playing basketball here. as nighttime fell, the game broke up. a short time later, jamar freeman found stabbed to death at an alley behind the playing field. walter robinson brought flowers to the spot today. he lives in the neighborhood. he knew jamar. >> it's a shame that young people are dying like this. it's uncalled for. >> it's a tragedy to see that happen to him. who would do something like that to him? you know what i mean? what could he do? he wasn't that kind of person. >> reporter: his grandmother said he was in trouble before but he tried to turn his life around. >> it was keeping him on the right track. i think that tore him apart, too. he just, you know, after that he kind of fell down. >> reporter: hanging with the

a fuel line on the tug broke. no one on board was hurt. al qaeda confirmed the death of this man. he was killed by an air strike in yemen. he was an american citizen but also very high on the list of most wanted terrorists. u.s. officials say he planned or inspired several terror plots in the u.s. including the failed attempt on christmas day by a guy with explosives in his underwear. today, that group posted a web statement. the statement confirmed his death. it also fouled revenge. tensions are running high after clashes between christians, muslims and security forces. 26 people died. hundreds wounded.

the fighting marks the worst violence since mu bar ek was forced from power. >> reporter: there are clashes today, but nothing like we saw yesterday. they took place close to the nile river. it began as a christian protest, a peaceful protest with demonstrators holding a march going to the central television station. as they approached the television station, they came across soldiers, there were pushing and shoving. it's when things descended and became violent. the soldiers dispatched the military vehicles and plowing through the crowds. the demonstrators picked up stones and throwing them at police. gunfire broke out and according to the ministry of health today,

at least 25 people were killed. nearly all of them demonstrators and more than 300 injured. the government is in damage control. there will be special investigations. they have had urgent political meetings. the christian demonstrators said the government didn't do anything to help them. the government is allowing islamic extremists to have free reign in this country. they are very worried about the political future for minorities, particularly christians as there's chaos that followed the oust in february. the white house condemned the riots in egypt. president obama is deeply concerned and calling for restraint on all sides. it is columbus day. up in new york city, a crowd gathered for the columbus day wreath laying ceremony.

this was downtown at union station. a columbus statue there. it was dedicated in june, 1912. now, up in new york city, a whole bunch of people turned out to celebrate columbus day. some people call that the world's largest celebration of italian-american culture. 1 million spectators, at least. and 35,000 marches turned out on 5th avenue to mark columbus. that dates back to 1929. >> boy, did they get beautiful weather. >> they did. it's amazing. we continue on this great stretch of weather. unfortunately, it looks like it's come to an end. i think you will have a nice night out there. this is one place to go out toward annapolis, the sailboat show. a beautiful weekend for that. right there downtown and toward annapolis and the harbor there.

really just fantastic. along the waterfront there, one of the great areas along the marriott. you can see it there. i know that place well. out there now, a nice shot. we are seeing a lot of color out there as far as the leaves are concerned. we'll see more color over the next couple days. no rain right now but as we widen out from the doppler, notice what is happening down there from the south. more in the way of rain. not a little but a lot of rain. parts of orlando, seven to eight inches of rain. it's making its way into georgia and will eventually move up to our area. what we are seeing now is the cloud cover thus far. we are going to continue to see the clouds as we move on through the afternoon and the evening tonight. 83 degrees the high temperature today. we were well above average. look at this, the average last 80 degree day is on october 14th going back to the year 2000.

reward money for helping bring down one of this country's most wanted mob bosses. she was miss iceland in 1974. she tipped the fbi after she recognized james whitey bulger and his girlfriend in a news report. she game friends with bulger's girlfriend while they were hiding out in santa monica. they bonded over a stray cat in the neighborhood. bulger was captured in june. wanted for 19 murders. there's a reason flight attendants ask us to turn off our cell phones on airplanes. they are not sure whether personal gadgets contributed to a crash or serious problem during a flight. they know ipods, laptops and phones emit enough interference

most of the republicans running for the presidential nomination will be in new hampshire tomorrow. many political experts are saying texas governor rick perry needs to do well in order to revive his campaign and former massachusetts governor, mitt romney needing a win there. a victory for antiwar protesters refusing to leave the plaza downtown, their permit ran out. after negotiating, the permit was extended for four months. late this afternoon, the two

sides met and agree on the extension. the demonstrators are holding what they call a general assembly vote. they will continue to protest. d.c. police say a student was stabbed to death. a police officer found the 17-year-old in an alley on saturday night. investigators say they had no motive and no suspects. identity it's a problem spilling into the area. more and more cases of animal fighting and cruelty. they are getting more tips from neighbors. >> the tips recently led to the arrest of two men in the district for dog fighting and cock fighting. we have the report. >> reporter: this rooster lives on a nice big farm. less than a year ago, he was kept inside a home on montello avenue in trinidad. >> the neighbor saw a rooster. in d.c., all livestock animals are illegal.

the neighborhood reported it was illegal. >> this 38-year-old used it to fight other roosters taking it to another location outside the district. >> from there, once the animal was picked up, they realized the spurs on the rooster were filed to a point. once the officer noticed that, it ian when it turned into an investigation for cock fighting. >> reporter: he must spend time in a federal prison before getting deported to guatemala. >> he was a very nice guy. he went to work like every day, every day of the week. he had three children. he was a really nice guy. >> reporter: the humane society had another case, this one involving dogs and dog fighting. an investigation involving a gun led them here. earlier this year, police tipped off the humane society to a home on clay street northeast. he housed three dogs for

fighting. they found dog fighting paraphernalia at the home. all three were pit bulls. only one, the one in this photo was adoptable. it now has a forever home. >> it can occur in small locations, in parks. it's happening everywhere. they are doing a good job of trying to keep it from us. we are trying to figure out where they are doing it to shut them down. >> reporter: in northeast washington, elaine reyes, news 4. vet bills ran into the thousands of dollars, all covered by the humane society. a little boy was killed by blunt force trauma to the head. that statement was made this weekend. the baby was with a caretaker when he became unresponsive. the death is suspicious and will not comment on the case. members of a volunteer

rescue squad are trying to figure out their next move now after a fund-raiser over the weekend was shut down because apparently, it was against the law. that group needs the money for new equipment and supplies for the ambulance. we have the report. members of the volunteer rescue squad got out their signs today. over the weekend, they were set up for an annual fund drive hoping to pull in $20,000. it came to an abrupt stop when police came to theed quarters to tell them they were violating an ordinance and so-called dangerous solicitation. >> our personnel here, spoke with him for 15 or 20 minutes to figure out how to get it back up and running. once there's a complaint, they must shut us down.

>> reporter: this is one of the locations the rescue squad was soliciting funds. >> a sergeant went out, checked it out, sure enough they were in violation of the city ordinance which prohibits that specific activity. we did have a ask the rescue squad to cease that type of fund raising activity. >> reporter: after the initial police visit, they learned they could have continued fund raising if they stayed away from the street but they already called off the volunteers. >> i feel there was miscommunication on both sides. we work closely with the city and police department. we will work to rectify it in the future. >> reporter: the original ordinance made an exception for them. then they said they had to enforce the rule for everyone. residents sympathized with the volunteers. >> pan handling should be

against the law to keep downtown streets safer and cleaner looking. for public service people, i think, yeah, there should be some leniency given to them for fund raising and such. >> reporter: the rescue squad collected $3,000 the first day. they hope to meet with city officials to figure out how to stage another fund-raiser that won't violate the ordinance. in this calender year, they have charged 31 people with pan handling. scary moments for a teacher at an elementary school in prince william county today. she was in her classroom this morning when a deer came kroshing through a window. moments later, the deer jumped right back out the same window and ran away. it all happened at the elementary school in lake ridge. it was recorded on the school surveillance camera. the principal is glad nobody was injured.

afternoon off the coast of marathon. everybody in the group, including a 4-year-old girl had to tread water for 20 hours before they were rescued. an 80-year-old woman in the group wasn't able to keep it up. she died. the rest of the group was taken to the hospital for treatment. they are all expected to survive. in news for your health, a warning about dietary supplements and whether they are doing more harm than good. researchers followed a group of 40,000 women. the study found those taking foe lick acid and iron supplements faced a higher risk of early death. that may be explained by ongoing problems or taking pills after a surgery. supplements are not bad but should be secondary to proper nutrition. >> it takes a second place to

i should get in the karaoke cab. he says the country is becoming the you united socialist states of america. the martin luther king memorial will have a formal dedication. it will be a smaller and shorter ceremony than the more elaborate event that was originally planned for back in august. that ceremony was postponed because of hurricane irene. tom sherwood has our report. >> reporter: the columbus crowd on monday was taking in the king memorial. >> i'm in awe. when i took the first picture, i said wow. >> it really worked well with the kids. they studies martin luther king and civil rights last year in class. it ties in well. >> reporter: the king memorial will be dedicated this coming sunday morning in a paired down program with speakers including president obama and members of the king family. the august hurricane irene forced organizers to postpone a

grander ceremony that was expected to draw 250,000 people or more. were you going to come for the first memorial? >> definitely. definitely. i was very disappointed we had the hurricane. >> reporter: are you going to be here this sunday? >> yes, i am. >> reporter: are you getting up early? >> i don't know how early. i have to go to church first, then i'll be here. >> reporter: now, a smaller crowd of 50,000 is expected. only 5,000 chairs will be set up for invited special guests down from the 30,000 in august. president obama will speak dpr the memorial itself with jumbo krons set up for the crowd to hear him. members are encouraged to bring their own blankets, folding chairs and water. metro will have extra cars running sunday morning.

officials are cautioning there's little to no parking for private vehicles. it's unclear if the memorial will be open to the public sunday afternoon. >> i wanted to come to the program sunday to experience it with a lot of people. i want to let her see it and read all the quotes to have more room to move abdomen about. >> the ceremony on sunday is open to the public. no tickets required. there will be secret service agents there for presidential security. coming up at 11:00, standing up for a bride resulted in a wedding party losing their purses. a woman who had a baby seven hours after running the chicago marathon. that's tonight at 11:00. sunday is looking good for the dedication. 70 degrees is what we are thinking for sunday as of this time. the big news between now and sunday, the rain that's coming in. look at the forecast. the next seven days, tomorrow
