good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. we begin today with breaking news. a terror plot has been foiled on u.s. soil targeting embassies here in d.c. the justice department is accusing iranian agents of plotting to assassinate the saudi ambassador to the united states. >> two people have been charged in this case. news 4's brian mooar joins us live from capitol hill with more on this breaking news. brian, how much do we know? >> reporter: what we know in the indictment which has just been unsealed, let me tell you, it's chilling. the plot was to unfold here in the nation's capital at a well-known restaurant which isn't named but attended frequently by the ambassador to the united states from saudi arabia. as well as numerous u.s. members of congress. one of the plotters was supposedly told that if this bombing took place in this restaurant, then more than 100 people could be injured or
4:01 pm
killed. he supposedly let loose with an expletive and said that so be it, that's what has to be done. we do know that one of the suspects is being held in new york at this hour. he was arrested last month. while going from mexico back to the united states. apparently what he was trying to do there was set up a deal with a mexican drug cartel. the drug cartel member that they were trying to pay to carry out this bomb plot, he turned out to be an informant for the u.s. drug enforcement administration. authorities say that they've been following this plot for many, many months. u.s. officials say that they have a lot of evidence here including from this suspect who's being held in new york. they say he's been talking. they say the evidence leads straight back to tehran. >> the complaint alleges this conspiracy was conceived, sponsored and directed from iran and constitutes a flagrant violation of u.s. and international law including a convention that explicitly protects diplomats from being harmed.
4:02 pm
in addition to holding these individual conspirators accountable for their alleged role in this plot, the united states is committed to holding iran accountable for its actions. >> reporter: one of the suspects, the one who is still at large, is said to be a member of iran's elite par military unit. a sort of special force. authorities are not naming names. they're not saying how far up this goes in the iranian government. they are pointing the finger at iran saying they will be held responsible for this. as for iran, their official state news agency just responded. they say it's all u.s. propaganda. pat and jim? >> brian, one we understand was, in fact, a u.s. citizen with an iranian passport. is that right? >> right. monsoor. he is a u.s. citizen, 56 years old. he does hold an iranian passport. the other is said to still be at large. he's based in iran. right now u.s. officials say they do not have any idea
4:03 pm
exactly where he is. >> brian, do we have any idea when this plot was supposed to take place? >> reporter: yeah. it started out apparently in the spring with talk of a kidnapping. and then it started sort of evolving over the months, especially those since u.s. officials have been involved. at least back in july. apparently these two suspects made $100,000 downpayment on a $1.5 million bounty that they were ultimately willing to pay for this. this does point in many ways to some sort of state-sponsored activity. if they're able to come up with $100,000, if they're willing to pay $1.5 million, this certainly seems to go beyond a couple of home-grown guys trying to threaten someone. >> the magnitude could have been tremendous right in our own backyard. brian mooar live on capitol hill. thanks so much. one witness took the stand in day one of the trial against a nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a plane on christmas
4:04 pm
in 2009. mike zanto was a passenger onboard that flight. today on the stand, he described hearing a loud pop and another passenger saying, hey, dude, your pants are on fire. umar farouk abdulmutallab is charged with trying to bring down a plane with a bomb in his underwear. prosecutors say abdulmutallab was on a martyrdom mission. a suspect is in custody in montgomery county. 52-year-old victor mckeechen is accused of attacking a driver at the wheaten metro station shortly after midnight. the confrontation began when mckeechen exposed himself to other riders. when the bus arrived in wheaten the suspects started fighting with a woman passenger. the driver tried to break it up and was stabbed several times in his torso and left arm.
4:05 pm
the driver is expected to be okay. the suspect faces a number of charges including assault and possession of marijuana. the occupy d.c. protests continue to cross the district today. for the first time since the movement began, protesters were arrested. six protesters were led away in handcuffs after demonstrating inside the hart senate office building. the video shows up unfurling a banner that read "tax the rich" on one of the interior balconies of the building. the six arrested were charged with unlawful conduct. news 4's tom sherwood will have a live report at 5:00. a major endorsement today for republican presidential candidate mitt romney. today new jersey governor chris christie endorsed romney for the gop presidential nomination. christie said romney has the perfect mix of private sector and executive experience in government. meanwhile, president obama says he's ready to break his jobs bill into a bunch of different pieces. news 4's steve handelsman has
