11:00 am
good morning, everyone. welcome to "news4 midday." i am barbara harrison. it's friday, october 14th, 2011. and there is a delay on the metro because of a fire on the tracks. it comes at the end of a tough week for metro and metro riders. megan mcgrath joins us and tells us what is happening out there. good morning, megan. >> reporter: the union station metro station has re-opened but
11:01 am
it was closed for about an hour and 15 minutes this morning, so affecting the people at the tail end of rush hour. at 8:45 this morning they experienced an electrical problem, and it was a spark that was on a component associated with the third rail, that's the electrical rail, inside the union station metro station. there were sparks that put off smoke and the smoke gathered in the tunnel prompting them to close the metro station for about an hour and 15 minutes. they had to single track trains between stations, and whenever you single track that causes big backups, and there were significant delays for a time this was all happening. and then on wednesday, the orange line had problems during the morning and evening rush hour, and a switch lost power, and that caused major issues and delays for people, and on tuesday night, there was chaos
11:02 am
after a person was hit by a train at the claire ton metro stop, and the escalators shut off from the weight of all the people gathered trying to get on the escalators, so people had to walk-up the escalators and it was a mess for riders. a lot of folks not happy with metro this week. nobody was injured. it's unclear what caused the sparking on this component, but, again, it was enough that it put off smoke and they felt they needed to clear off the station and air things out, and the trains are now going in both directions and that's good news for commuters, and we are seeing the delays dissipate at this point, but certainly not a good thing for folks trying to get to work at this morning, and it was at the tail of the rush hour, about 8:45. this is the second day of a amber alert for this boy,
11:03 am
11-year-old william mcquain. he may have been in danger much longer than that. this is a case that spans from maryland to charlotte, north carolina. the police arrested the boy's stepfather and charged him with the death of his mother. investigators say the boy's stepfather, curtis lopez, did not live at the home. we have new video of him after his arrest last night. a witness told police that recently they saw lopez loading items from mcquain's suv -- from her house into her suv. they arrested lopez as he left a hotel. the boy's school had been se senti sending automated calls to the home, and they finally reached another contact. >> right now, all we know is
11:04 am
what we hear on the news. as a community, the e-mails have been going out through this organization all day and we are hoping and praying for a safe return for william. >> lopez will have his first appearance in a courtroom. he has hired a lawyer but has not said anything publicly about the disappearance of his step son. now to the severe weather that moved through our area last night. the national weather service confirmed a tornado touched down i-95 in quantico, virginia. people stuck on the highway used their cell phones to take pictures that you are seeing right now, the twister as it passed by. this was taken about 5:30 in quantico. nobody was hurt, thankfully, but it still rattled nerves for people trapped in their cars. >> the car was rocking, and there was debris hitting the car, and it -- it was just very
11:05 am
terrifying. i thought maybe it was going to pick my car up and take me away, but it didn't, just rocked it some. >> some of the worst storm damage is in vienna. the storm winds knocked down power lines, and along wickens road. and at one point, about 5,000 people were in the dark. the weather rattled some already frazled nerves, and a tornado touched down and blew the roof off from the home. and a 3.0 magnitude hit mineral on wednesday and forced the evacuation of two schools there. let's turn to the weather now. clouds we hope are moving out right now. tom kierein can tell us. tom, good morning. >> good morning. still cloudy here in washington. we still have some light rain in washington but there is one band of moderate rain yet to come through, and after that goes by we will have much of the rain
11:06 am
ending. we are getting moderate rain into southern loudoun county, and just now coming into western and northern fairfax county, and that across the potomac river is entering southwestern montgomery county, and these showers are advancing off to the east and moving rather quickly and there will be brief heavy downpours associated with that. also moderate rain is near quantico right now on i-95, but no severe weather associated with this. just a light to moderate showers for another couple of hours. 67 at reagan national. it's near 60 in the shenandoah valley. we will have sun during the afternoon. rain should be ending in the next couple of hours and turning sunny and breezy with winds. and temperatures climb into the low 70s briefly in the early afternoon.
11:07 am
and then turning chilly tonight, and the look into next week coming up in a few moments. hopefully the traffic is clearing like the skies are. danella sealock joins us for a look at the roads. >> i need to tell you about an accident that i have right now. northbound route 3 at 450, you are seeing an accident there. shooting over to the beltway, we have delays as you can see. new hampshire avenue is red. inner loop making your way towards georgia avenue, still pretty slow. but the slowest trip is this stretch right here, outer loop. coalsville road, your speed is at 30 miles per hour. if you are taking the beltway in virginia, it looks clear. robinson terminal not seeing problems right there, and you are clear on the inner loop as well as the outer loop. >> looks good out there now. we will see you in a bit, danella, thank you. and tomorrow marks one year

the clean up of a plaza in lower manhattan where protesters have been camped out for a month was postponed earlier this morning. a crowd cheered that decision fearing the cleanup was an attempt to evict them from the space. melissa joins us from the news room with more on this. >> the movement has spread to 190 cities, and the cleaning in new york was cancelled this morning, and nearly 1,000
11:14 am
protesters continued to rally marching on wall street. at this point, we understand 14 people have been arrested after throwing bottles and garbage cans. the march caused traffic jams and police had to use scooters to force protesters on the sidewalks. the owners of the park where the protesters are saying say they can work with the protesters to help keep the park clean. here in washington, eight people were arrested on capitol hill charged with disrupting congress, but the protesters now have the support of former vice president, al gore. he wrote on his blog last night that elected officials have failed the public back in mid september, and many had not heard of the movement but now it is known across the united states. >> thank you, melissa. president obama says iranian government will be held accountable for its role in the alleged plot to assassinate the

saudi ambassador to the u.s. the president did not call for new sanctions but pushed for the toughest sanctions against the tehran government. they reached out to allies and the international community to build support. two men have been charged with planning to assassinate the saudi ambassador to the u.s. and said they had the backing of iran. one was a naturalized u.s. citizen, and today prosecutors will ask to keep him locked up until his trial and he worked illegally with intelligent actses in damascus monitoring those who moved to the united states. syria's government denies that. and right now president obama is on his way to michigan today to push his jobs plan. the president is taking south korea's president with him, and the two leaders will tour the
11:16 am
assembly plant, and they will talk about the trade agreement reached between the united states and south korea. president obama said the long-awaited agreement is good for both countries, and it could expand u.s. exports by $11 billion. not even the downpour could dampen the spirits at the white house dinner last night. the skies opened up as guests started to arrive last night. many of the hems of the floor-length gowns were soaked. and who is michelle obama wearing? she wore a gown by a korean american designer. the jersey dress had a modest slit up the side and mrs. obama wore minimal jewelry last night, and topped the entire ensemble with a black and crystal belt. she looked lovely. but it did rain last night.
11:17 am
i got caught in it in my car out on 50. >> you were not alone. a lot of people got soaked yesterday afternoon and evening. we had a brief break overnight and then another surge of rain come over us in the morning. thankfully, the last of the rain should be moving through here over the next hour or two, and then we will finally get some welcome sunshine back. right now there is the overcast sky over the monuments. and it's 66 degrees there right now, and the breeze is picking up, gusting up to 20 miles per hour in the last hour. the national airport has been a soggy scene. we are growing webbed feet. since august 1st, we had over 19 inches of rain, and that's 11 inches over the average. and so it has been a wet period advancing from the south to the north and there is a band of
11:18 am
moderate to heavy rain right now just now coming into fairfax county, this area of orange, this stretches across the potomac, and this band is advancing to the east. it's one more band of moderate to briefly heavy downpours and that's moving off with maybe thunder and lightning with that. a downpour in southeast washington, and along interstate 95 from alexandria to woodbridge, they are getting moderate downpours. temperatures now, we have been holding steady in the low to mid-60s all morning, and it's up to 70 by the bay, and upper 60s through central virginia. and then out of the mountains, it's been near 60 there. and the big storms yesterday did zip off to the north and now there is the last band, and we're getting breaks in the clouds farther to the west. and going forward here, over the rest of the afternoon, by 2:30
11:19 am
or so most of the rain should be gone and then we get the sunshine breaking on it this afternoon. we will have a gusty wind out of the north and west, and that will bring in much cooler weather here that will be in place by dawn on saturday. we will be down into the 40s, but we will have a clear start to the day. so for the rest of this friday, we will have a clearing sky later this afternoon, at least a partially clearing sky anyway after the rain ends in another hour or so. as we get into the latter part of the afternoon, those winds will also pick up a bit and gust over 25 miles per hour, and sun sets at 6:32, and then we will drop from the low 60s early evening down to the mid-50s by midnight and then by dawn tomorrow, down to the mid-40s in many locations, and we will have the blustery wind tomorrow afternoon gusting over 30 miles per hour from time to time. that should settle down on saturday evening, and before then we will climb into the upper 60s. and there will be quite a bit of
11:20 am
sunshine tomorrow, and then sunday morning a chilly morning and down into the mid-40s, and sunday afternoon in the low 70s and a few clouds building. should have great weather for the king memorial dedication ceremonies on the mall on sunday. monday, back to work and school, pertly sunny and up near 70. and a front comes in on tuesday. and then if you are going to the skins' game on sunday they take on the eagles at fedex field, and the kickoff time is past 1:00, and by then it should be around 70, and temperatures should hold steady in the upper 60s to around 70 during the game. good football weather coming up on sunday. >> sounds like a great weekend. >> enjoy. >> thank you, tom. let's check on the traffic again. >> we have good news. we had an earlier accident northbound route 3, and now it's out of the way. if you are taking any of the bridges right now, let's take a live look starting with the american legion bridge.
11:21 am
and it's clear, but still seeing wet roadways so give yourself extra time if you are heading out of the house. and this is a view of the susa bridge, not seeing any problems inbound or outbound. no big delays at all, and clear as you make your way across. a look at the 14th street bridge, nice and clear as you make your way into the city. barbara, back to you. >> thank you, danella. it's 11:21 now, and still ahead, lindsay lohan is back in the news. we will tell you why. and what plants need to be brought in from the cooler weather that is on the way. first, here is a look at first, here is a look at what is hot on

11:25 am
and it's larger than voting rights, now, barbara, it's involving our own ability to approve our budget for our money, being able to approve our own local laws, and frankly becoming what i think many people aspire to become, and we deserve to be the 51st state of the nation. >> and there is a jobs march scheduled, is that right? >> yeah, the reverend al sharpton through his national action network will have a march as well. we are going to be joining them at the theater at 11:15 on the monument grounds to be part of that. our activities will kick off in freedom plaza at 9:30 in the morning. and then the program will actually begin at 10:00. and then we will march down to the theater on the monument grounds and join sharpton. >> is the city ready for the crowds this weekend, and talk
11:26 am
about your feelings about that. do you think we are ready for all those folks? >> i think we are. we are the nation's capital, and many things go on because we are the nation's capital, and we have had crowds -- large crowds here in the past, and there were many people who had arrived in the city when the dedication had to be cancelled because of the hurricane back in august. can you go back and look at many events. way back in 1963, the city has handled these things well over the years. >> it's going to be a busy weekends for washington. >> it is. thank you, barbara. >> thank you for joining us. well, it's time to bring house plants and tropicals inside for the winter. our garden experts is here with the answers in this week's "the
11:27 am
dirt." we will talk about the plants you brought coming up next, and some of the things we need to use if we are going to replant some of the things inside. why is it time to relocate? is weather about to change enough that it would make a difference? >> yeah, what is about to happen that is really important is people will start turning their heat on inside, and you want to get your house plants and tropicals inside so they have time to adjust to when the heat comes on because that tends to dry things out. we are in danger of frost, if we do get a frost at the end of october, you could end up with a lot of house plants and tropicals end up dying. >> hibiscus, and ivy, do they have to come in now? >> the hibiscus should definitely come in. you want to have plenty of time for those to adjust once you get them inside. >> will they live inside? >> they will.
11:28 am
for the most part, if they are in full sun outside they need to be in the brightest place that you can provide inside also. >> at what temperature will they suffer outside? >> 45 degrees and below, and they will start to get, you know, darkening of the leaves and some will start to lose leafs and they will start to struggle a lot. >> shoe put them in the sunlight in the window or in the dark until you are ready to put them back outside? >> if you have a window with a southern or western exposure, put them in front of that window. today we are starting off with a few things that nice plants people can take out. we recommend plants bring the plants out in the summertime because they do well. and this is a chinese evergreen, and this one down here with the nice red to the leave is a different variation.
11:29 am
these are great plants to have inside because they do well in low light areas, and they tolerate being dried out. >> if you are buying something, you can buy this and plan to put it out next year for the summertime. >> yeah, it's nice on the patio. and then these are nice plants. the variations are known as corn plant. these beautiful with the pink in the leave and there to your left, these are kau latha. and things that bloom for a long time, the nice orange spike on that plant, that will stay inside with that really beautiful orange or red or yellow or even a deep plumb color for three to four months. >> we have one of those in the news room. and you can buy things to help you bring things inside. >> make sure your plants get cleaned off well. hit them with a good spray of the rose hose to get any insect
11:30 am
them, and give them a nice spray to kill the insects or any eggs they have laid. >> thank you and always good to see you. coming up in the next half hour of "news4 midday," rick perry responds to the controversy over religion in the campaign, and trying to garner support for his jobs plan. and we can see the sun and and we can see the sun and the

11:35 am
the stand before the judge called for a recess until monday. yesterday, a sleep expert testified that it is inconceivable dr. conrad murray would use propofol to treat insomnia. >> i think all bets are off, and you can't be 100% sure that that is not enough to kind of tip him along that sedation and causing a deeper level of sedation and compromise their ability to breathe. >> lawyers for murray will claim jackson took eight pills of the anti-anxiety drug hours before his death. catching a cab in arlington county could soon cost you more. the board is considering whether to raise the basic taxi fair by

25 cents, and then add another 50 cents for each passenger 12 years old or older. the board still needs to set a public hearing on this proposal. let's check again on our weather. let's talk to tom kierein who is in the storm center. >> still raining. we are getting moderate downpours in montgomery county as we look at the radar. over the last hour, much of the rain has tapered off. a lot in virginia. but there's moderate rain in fairfax county, and that one area of red in montgomery county from potomac up to gaitersburg, that's going east-northeast. and then across the frederick county line into southeastern frederick county maryland, that is advancing to the north and east. a few other pockets in prince georges county, charles and southern st. mary's, and it's about to move into calvert
11:37 am
county. elsewhere, scattered lighter showers across the rest of west virginia and it's in the low to mid-60s throughout most of the region, and then the eastern shore, it's in the low 70s there. and right now at reagan national with some showers, it's actually cooled down a bit, down to 64. later today when we get the sun breaking out, we ought to climb back into the low 70s, and a blustery wind, too. windy and chilly on saturday in the 40s, and then winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour with sunshine and the wind will diminish saturday night. and then sunday afternoon in the low 70s, and good weather for the king memorial dedication and the skin's game, and we could get more showers on tuesday evening and on wednesday of next week. let's check in with danella sealock again with the traffic out there. how is it looking? any problems we need to know
11:38 am
about if we are heading out? >> branch avenue and erie street, avoid the area and expert delays. and seeing wet roadways right now. wet on i-270 here at shade yo grove. give yourself extra time to, you know, make way for yourself since the roadways are so wet. if you are traveling i-66, here is a view of fairfax county parkway, clear. and this is the view the gallows road, no delays there. and it's clear all the way into the city. >> have a great day. the redskins will look for a little revenge when they take the field this weekend. last year philadelphia dominated washington like few teams before them, crushing the skins 59-28 on monday night football. michael vick threw for four
11:39 am
touchdowns and ran for two more, and this year the redskins are strug -- the eagles are struggling with a 1-4 record. >> we know they are dangerous still. >> the redskins are currently in sole position of the first place in the east. well, here, 7,000 baby boomers turn 65 every day. and today many in the growing group are living longer and healthier lives, and that's driving more baby boomers to want to look as good as they feel. so the doctor joins us to talk about what makes that possible. a lot of folks calling you up who are hitting the big 6-5, and wanting to look like they are the big 4-5. >> yeah, 65 is the new 55.
11:40 am
people over 65 they don't look the way previous generations looked. >> are there any restrictions on what they can have done then, because -- when do people start to have plastic surgery? around 45? >> yes, 45, 50. the whole trend is to do the less invasive things earlier and prolong our youthfulness as opposed to reversing aging. the baby boomers represent 30% of cosmetic surgical clients, and now they are turning 65 and it will be a great percentage. >> you saying having a complete physical is the right thing to do before any cosmetic procedure, no matter what your age. is it more important for those who are over -- 65 and over? >> sure. for sure. and studies have shown people in good health in people over 65, and we talked about this before, they are not on blood thinners and don't have any higher risks of complications, then groups 40

11:42 am
can do and still look good and be active and get back to work within a week. >> how do you know which procedure is the best one for you to choose. >> i hand patients a mirror, and i ask them what has changed and what is concerning you, if you see a picture, what is happening? many times it's the eyes or neck, or some people into fit, it could be their love handles. >> yeah, you have liposuction for that and new ways to do that. >> yeah, laser lipo. >> go to somebody that is experienced, and a lot of people getting into the field because it's lucrative, and people recognize this is an area that is not as carefully monitored as perhaps should be, so board
