assessing the storm damage. good afternoon, i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. the weather service confirmed it was a torrent that touched in virginia. people stuck in the traffic used their cell phones to take pictures and video of the twister. this video was taken by darlene around 5:30 yesterday afternoon. you can see debris swirling. no one was injured but the tornado still rattled nerves of people trapped in their cars. >> in new kent county, a tornado ripped through causing severe damage. power lines thrown to the ground and transformered left. 30 homes were among those buildings damaged. an elementary school was hit. students were there for after school activities and rushed to a safe zone. they felt debris blowing

through, but all the students turned out to be okay. the roof was damaged. it had just been repaired after hurricane irene. >> it's been a sunny day after a wet morning. >> veronica johnson joins us now with the forecast. >> hey, barbara and pat. wet morning is right. maybe you got caught in it. every time the rain was ready to stop, it started up again with the sky opening up. in severe weather, but we had thunderstorms run through the area. we have a nice looking sky out there. puffy clouds against the brilliant blue. the temperature across the area, let's look at that. the temperatures have been in the 60s today. as far as cloud cover goes, we are seeing clouds roll through the area. but continued clearing here. there's a look at the storms that came through early around 10:00 a.m. and by 2:00, it was

all north and east of the area. the pockets of clearing down to the south around culpeper, manassas and fredericksburg. dover and areas around georgetown and salisbury still getting rain for the afternoon. we are at 72 degrees with the wind at 12 miles per hour. so, it's breezy now and it's going to be breezy here for the overnight period. a gusty day coming our way tomorrow. we drop to 57 degrees by 11:00 p.m. midnight, under a clear sky. your evening clearing continues with a blustery and nice day. stick around for the seven day forecast. back to you. >> thank you. the 11-year-old son of a murder

murder murdered germantown woman is still missing. pat collins joins us live from police headquarters and the latest on the investigation. pat? >> reporter: barbara, this is a strange case. the focus of the search for that 11-year-old boy here in montgomery county. but the keeper of the key, clues in the case, that murder suspect in charlotte. so police keep trying to talk to curtis lopez who remains in custody in north carolina charged in the murder of his wife, jane mcquain. still missing, mcquain's 11-year-old son, william. police haven't given up. >> we'll continue to speak with neighbors, family, friends and school officials who will provide us information so we can operate on that from up here. >> reporter: do you think william mcquain is still alive?

>> we have t have that hope. >> reporter: now there are two vigils tonight scheduled for william mcquain, one with the football team and another with the school. both start at 7:30. coming up at 5:00, the latest on the investigation. this, as the victim's brother and her co-workers go to the murder scene to talk to her friends, to talk to her neighbors. i'll be back at 5:00 with more. back to you. >> thank you, pat. there were more clashes on the streets of new york today as the occupy wall street protests wage on for nearly a month. it's become the movements home base. a celebratery -- we have the latest from new york.

>> reporter: to leave the park they occupied for a month, protesters went on the march to declare victory. it went into minor clashes that resulted in just over a dozen arrests. the owner of the park asked protesters to clear out sections of the park to be cleaned up. instead protesters cleaned the park themselves and rallied supporters to stand their ground. >> they said we couldn't return with sleeping bags or stay there. that meant we couldn't occupy the park. we could be like regular passer byes in the park. it was an eviction attempt. >> reporter: the protests turned into a nationwide movement with rallies held in nearly 200 cities. the message of social inequality and corporate greed gained more supporters each week including

moveon.org. >> reporter: the folks here seem determined. they are not going anywhere anytime soon. >> reporter: others, those who work in the financial district say the protests are only getting them so far. >> i think the economy is a disaster and people need jobs. i don't know how protesting gets jobs. >> reporter: protesters see it differently. while they are not moving, sweeping change may not be far away. nbc news, new york. this weekend is the dedication for the martin luther king jr. memorial. the president's rights leaders and entertainers will be on hand sunday. hurricane irene postponed the original dedication in august. 50,000 people are expected to attend. it begins at 8:00 in the morning. president obama will deliver the keynote address. members of the king family will

their way through delaware and out to sea. off to the east, we have more shower activity. spotty shower activity along with the clouds. a lot of it drying up on the decent downward. speaking of downward, this storm system is pulling away from the area. again, just a few spotty showers up to the north and west. you can see the rains early this morning in new jersey and new york. back off to the west, some cloud cover and some showers in west virginia. so tomorrow will be a mostly sunny to partly sunny type of day as this system pulls away. i's going to be windy. a northwest wind. that is for saturday. even for sunday, we are going to have sunshine around here. it's going to be on the chilly side with the northwesterly wind. more cloud cover up into pennsylvania and showers there as well. it's next week when we'll see more dramatic changes taking place with a stronger system

month of september there and early part of october here now. so, that's really allowed us to get good fall color going here. moderate color to the north and west. spots in the shenandoah national park seeing moderate and close to high color there. spots in new england, they are seeing peak color right now. it's what new england has going on in massachusetts, bold mountain and camelback mountain in vermont. right now, 72 degrees. a wind at 12 miles per hour. the wind could pick up at times for the evening giving gusts around 30. overnight, we'll drop to the 40s. frederick down to 45 and 47 in fredericksburg. again, i think sunday morning will be the chilliest around here. the high for tomorrow, 69 to 70 degrees. we're still going to have some clouds passing through the area tomorrow. still, a real decent day for the weekend. the big game, of course, on

a self-proclaimed superhero thought he was breaking up a fight was in court today to face

assault charges. a.k.a. superhero phoenix jones showed up in full costume. he used pepper spray. he thought he was helping the situation. no charges have been filed. he took off his mask after the court appearance. the city attorney say that could change after an investigation is complete. schoolteachers will not be required to check the immigration status of kids in alabama for the time being. they blocked that controversial part of a state immigration law today. they also blocked part of the law that makes it a crime for immigrants not to have the proper documentation with them. the court will let police officers detain them if they are suspected of being in the country illegally. still ahead on news 4, police in california release new details in the deadly shooting

prosecutors in southern california plan to seek the death penalty against a man accused of shooting eight people in a shooting rampage at a hair salon. eight kounds of murder and one count of attempted murder. >> reporter: at the sight of the massacre, residents helds on to each other thursday night but couldn't hold back their tears. >> this tragedy will not define this city. >> reporter: police say the 41-year-old in full body armor and carrying three weapons opened fire in the crowded salon killing eight victims and taking much more. >> they are not a number. everybody is special to me.

they were wonderful, wonderful people. >> reporter: like this 64-year-old sitting in his car when he was shot as the gunman fled. this man who owned the salon. >> she lost her soul mate, her partner, her every day companion. she lost her buzz partner and her employees and work family. she's devastated. her dreams are crushed. they were ready to retire. and she's alone. >> reporter: several salon employees were among those killed. christy wilson and victoria whose car still sits in the parking lot. >> she was the life of the party. she just, inside and out was genuinely an amazing person. >> reporter: victim michelle was a stylist here but also a mother and the ex-wife of the suspect. police say she was his intended target.
