assessing the storm damage. good afternoon, i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. the weather service confirmed it was a torrent that touched in virginia. people stuck in the traffic used their cell phones to take pictures and video of the twister. this video was taken by darlene around 5:30 yesterday afternoon. you can see debris swirling. no one was injured but the tornado still rattled nerves of people trapped in their cars. >> in new kent county, a tornado ripped through causing severe damage. power lines thrown to the ground and transformered left. 30 homes were among those buildings damaged. an elementary school was hit. students were there for after school activities and rushed to a safe zone. they felt debris blowing

through, but all the students turned out to be okay. the roof was damaged. it had just been repaired after hurricane irene. >> it's been a sunny day after a wet morning. >> veronica johnson joins us now with the forecast. >> hey, barbara and pat. wet morning is right. maybe you got caught in it. every time the rain was ready to stop, it started up again with the sky opening up. in severe weather, but we had thunderstorms run through the area. we have a nice looking sky out there. puffy clouds against the brilliant blue. the temperature across the area, let's look at that. the temperatures have been in the 60s today. as far as cloud cover goes, we are seeing clouds roll through the area. but continued clearing here. there's a look at the storms that came through early around 10:00 a.m. and by 2:00, it was

all north and east of the area. the pockets of clearing down to the south around culpeper, manassas and fredericksburg. dover and areas around georgetown and salisbury still getting rain for the afternoon. we are at 72 degrees with the wind at 12 miles per hour. so, it's breezy now and it's going to be breezy here for the overnight period. a gusty day coming our way tomorrow. we drop to 57 degrees by 11:00 p.m. midnight, under a clear sky. your evening clearing continues with a blustery and nice day. stick around for the seven day forecast. back to you. >> thank you. the 11-year-old son of a murder

murder murdered germantown woman is still missing. pat collins joins us live from police headquarters and the latest on the investigation. pat? >> reporter: barbara, this is a strange case. the focus of the search for that 11-year-old boy here in montgomery county. but the keeper of the key, clues in the case, that murder suspect in charlotte. so police keep trying to talk to curtis lopez who remains in custody in north carolina charged in the murder of his wife, jane mcquain. still missing, mcquain's 11-year-old son, william. police haven't given up. >> we'll continue to speak with neighbors, family, friends and school officials who will provide us information so we can operate on that from up here. >> reporter: do you think william mcquain is still alive?

>> we have t have that hope. >> reporter: now there are two vigils tonight scheduled for william mcquain, one with the football team and another with the school. both start at 7:30. coming up at 5:00, the latest on the investigation. this, as the victim's brother and her co-workers go to the murder scene to talk to her friends, to talk to her neighbors. i'll be back at 5:00 with more. back to you. >> thank you, pat. there were more clashes on the streets of new york today as the occupy wall street protests wage on for nearly a month. it's become the movements home base. a celebratery -- we have the latest from new york.

>> reporter: to leave the park they occupied for a month, protesters went on the march to declare victory. it went into minor clashes that resulted in just over a dozen arrests. the owner of the park asked protesters to clear out sections of the park to be cleaned up. instead protesters cleaned the park themselves and rallied supporters to stand their ground. >> they said we couldn't return with sleeping bags or stay there. that meant we couldn't occupy the park. we could be like regular passer byes in the park. it was an eviction attempt. >> reporter: the protests turned into a nationwide movement with rallies held in nearly 200 cities. the message of social inequality and corporate greed gained more supporters each week including

moveon.org. >> reporter: the folks here seem determined. they are not going anywhere anytime soon. >> reporter: others, those who work in the financial district say the protests are only getting them so far. >> i think the economy is a disaster and people need jobs. i don't know how protesting gets jobs. >> reporter: protesters see it differently. while they are not moving, sweeping change may not be far away. nbc news, new york. this weekend is the dedication for the martin luther king jr. memorial. the president's rights leaders and entertainers will be on hand sunday. hurricane irene postponed the original dedication in august. 50,000 people are expected to attend. it begins at 8:00 in the morning. president obama will deliver the keynote address. members of the king family will

be there and aretha franklin will headline the ceremony. now to the republican race for the white house. today texas governor rick perry tried to regain the momentum he's lost. in a speech, he said the u.s. needs to produce more oil to create new jobs. steve handelsman is following the race. >> reporter: rick perry hopes today starts a comeback. he refocused on jobs at u.s. steel near pittsburgh. >> we must get america working again. a big part of the solution is under our feet and off our coast. >> reporter: the texas governor wants more drilling in the gulf of mexico, in alaska and the rockies and less regulation of his home state oil industry. perry promised he would make the changes by executive order. >> creating jobs in america is as simple as changing presidents. >> reporter: winning the nomination once looked simple. now perry is polling third or

the temperature currently at 72 degrees with a west-northwest wind at 12 miles per hour. i think here for the evening and a portion of the overnight, we could see our winds out of the northwest gusts up to 30 miles per hour. all as the weather system pulls away. winds are gusting up to 20 miles per hour in baltimore, maryland. 25 miles per hour gusts reported in fredericksburg, virginia. 32 in martinsburg, west virginia. those are the current wind gusts across the area. let's check out the temperatures. we are in the 70s, low 70s. d.c. to the south and east. in the mid-60s to the north and west. coming up this evening as temperatures drop off, with the wind it's definitely going to be chilly out there. by 11:00 p.m., we drop to 57 degrees. tomorrow morning, 52 to 53 degrees. it's right around d.c. inside the beltway. there's the big rains making

their way through delaware and out to sea. off to the east, we have more shower activity. spotty shower activity along with the clouds. a lot of it drying up on the decent downward. speaking of downward, this storm system is pulling away from the area. again, just a few spotty showers up to the north and west. you can see the rains early this morning in new jersey and new york. back off to the west, some cloud cover and some showers in west virginia. so tomorrow will be a mostly sunny to partly sunny type of day as this system pulls away. i's going to be windy. a northwest wind. that is for saturday. even for sunday, we are going to have sunshine around here. it's going to be on the chilly side with the northwesterly wind. more cloud cover up into pennsylvania and showers there as well. it's next week when we'll see more dramatic changes taking place with a stronger system

welcome back to news 4 atd 4:00. i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. here is what's happening at this hour. police are still looking for 11-year-old william mcquain. he's the son of jane mcquain who was found murdered in her germantown home. her husband is in custody in north carolina. he's charged with her death. he'll be in court on monday. final preparations are being made for sunday's dedication of the martin luther king memorial on the mall. thousands of people are expected to attend. president obama will join in the event. aretha franklin is headlining the ceremony. more clashes between occupy wall street protesters and police today in new york city. at least a dozen people were arrested after a march got a bit out of hand. also, the owner of the park that the movement calls home base

>> for the ipad 2 announcement, i was 35th in line. they ran out just before me. >> reporter: shoppers could meet a similar fate this weekend. sales of more than 2 million units are expected. mark barger, nbc news. the company will now track which websites customers browse, the apps they use and the customers location. verizon says they will use it to make the mobile ads that customers see more relevant. the information will be shared with outside companies, too. all verizon customers will be affected automatically. they can choose to opt out. while the changes may make some users feel uneasy, you should know that all wireless carriers track this sort of data. southwest airlines is announcing that airtran airways will adopt their policy for large passengers.

march 1, passengers considered customers of size will be asked to buy a second seat if they are flying coach. a customer of size is someone who encroaches on neighboring seats. the decision to charge for an extra seat is at the carriers sole discorrection. they will refund the price if the plane does not oversell. 1700 married couples took a survey about their attitude toward marriage. >> more money, nor problems. the study shows couples most materialistic had the worst marriage scores. 20% of people had a strong love or money. they were better off financially but money was a big source of conflict. >> change the way therapists address problems in a marriage.

sounds like we are going to have sunshine, but chilly this weekend, right? >> chilly in the morning, especially on sunday. layer up, then take off the layers by the afternoon. take a look outside now. we have a mixture of clouds and sunshine. the one thing about the weekend is it's going to be dry. that is great news. since the first of august, barbara, we have gotten over 19 inches of rain. >> doesn't surprise me. >> it puts us above average by 11.3. that's a ton of rain for the area. a lot of rain coming in for the

month of september there and early part of october here now. so, that's really allowed us to get good fall color going here. moderate color to the north and west. spots in the shenandoah national park seeing moderate and close to high color there. spots in new england, they are seeing peak color right now. it's what new england has going on in massachusetts, bold mountain and camelback mountain in vermont. right now, 72 degrees. a wind at 12 miles per hour. the wind could pick up at times for the evening giving gusts around 30. overnight, we'll drop to the 40s. frederick down to 45 and 47 in fredericksburg. again, i think sunday morning will be the chilliest around here. the high for tomorrow, 69 to 70 degrees. we're still going to have some clouds passing through the area tomorrow. still, a real decent day for the weekend. the big game, of course, on

does all the lottery money go? it's friday and it's time to ask liz. >> i'm glad somebody asked the going out of business question because i was wondering myself. our first question comes through e-mail from chris. chris noticed a company in arlington that says it's been going out of business for several months now. are there rules about how long a company can claim it's closing? >> the arlington county commissioner says the counties wanting to have a going out of business sale have to apply with the county, provide an inventory of what's left in the store along with an application fee. once it's processed, the company has 30 days to close the doors. now, if they still want to stay open after the 30 days, they can renew the application by paying another fee and updating the list for the county. it can continue six times or a total of 180 days until the

a self-proclaimed superhero thought he was breaking up a fight was in court today to face

assault charges. a.k.a. superhero phoenix jones showed up in full costume. he used pepper spray. he thought he was helping the situation. no charges have been filed. he took off his mask after the court appearance. the city attorney say that could change after an investigation is complete. schoolteachers will not be required to check the immigration status of kids in alabama for the time being. they blocked that controversial part of a state immigration law today. they also blocked part of the law that makes it a crime for immigrants not to have the proper documentation with them. the court will let police officers detain them if they are suspected of being in the country illegally. still ahead on news 4, police in california release new details in the deadly shooting

prosecutors in southern california plan to seek the death penalty against a man accused of shooting eight people in a shooting rampage at a hair salon. eight kounds of murder and one count of attempted murder. >> reporter: at the sight of the massacre, residents helds on to each other thursday night but couldn't hold back their tears. >> this tragedy will not define this city. >> reporter: police say the 41-year-old in full body armor and carrying three weapons opened fire in the crowded salon killing eight victims and taking much more. >> they are not a number. everybody is special to me.
