at the tidal basin. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, guys. you know, after the idea, after the fund-raising, after the construction and after the hurricane, thousands are gathering here to dedicate the martin luther king memorial on the west part of the national mall. initially 250,000 people were expected more or last august. now 50,000 or more. the weather is spectacular. we're in the early parts of the program now from 9:00 to 11:00. various speakers in music. president obama is scheduled to speak about 11:00 a.m.. he was actually be on television here for even the people on the mall. there's a big jumbo tron for us to see that. this is where probably someone was telling me, this is probably one of the last great gatherings of all the civil rights gatherings of the '50s and '60s getting old now. this is a chance for all of them to relive millions of memories

as we dedicate the martin luther king memorial statue on the mall. the only african-american hero on the mall. any questions for me? >> i've got a question for you, tom. we talked all morning about the road closures around the monument, what it's like getting to the area. tell us, you're down there. what is it like? is everything blocked off right now? >> well, for anybody who marks in the civil rights marchs, it's just a walk. for a lot of people they were a little bit surprised that so many streets around the tidal basin, and lincoln memorial are closed to any kind of traffic. if you take the subway or bus, there's a long walk here. but the crowd has been growing steadily down here. there have been no reports of any problems in police, fire or anything like that. it's a pretty good crowd. gospel music started earlier. even i was feeling pretty good. >> that certainly says a lot.

are, 11-year-old william mccain is still missing. his mother, 51-year-old jane mccain was found dead in her condo wednesday night. now, she was beaten and stabbed. her estranged boyfriend, curtis lopez, was arrested. he was found in north carolina on thursday with mccain's vehicle. he awaits a court appearance tomorrow in north carolina. we'll deal with the possible extradition back here to montgomery county. now, william mccain has not been seen since september 30th. an amber alert is still active. light-skinned african-american male, about five feet tall, weighing 85 pounds. he attends martin luther king middle school not far from here. joining me now is roger anderson, one of the organizers of the search. mr. anderson, we talked earlier. you said this is doctor there are several reasons the search is going on and your organizing it. >> yeah.

i'm the parent of an 11-year-old. and i can only imagine what she would be going through if she were living. she would probably be a basket case. there's really no word in what the police activity is or whatever. there's a lot of anxiety. so we're here to exercise that and try to, you know, see if we can find any leads about william. >> and how many people are you expect something. >> oh, at least 100. mostly from jane's church that will join us later. and we're getting e-mail and texts from other people who are willing to join in. >> and i spoke to one of the people that will be joining you who said jane would be doing this. >> oh, yeah. jane, you know, jane would definitely be doing this for any of us if she was here. unfortunately since she's not here, we're picking up that slack and doing it for her. like i said, we're all parents, so we definitely understand. >> well, indeed. the amber alert is still out there. montgomery county police are

asking anyone with information to contact them. again, this search effort will get under way probably in a couple of phases. some folks will start early. then when the church lets out, members are going to organize again. so there will be another wave of folks here hoping to find some information and hopefully solving the mystery now, the tragic mystery of the whereabouts of william mcquain. we are live in montgomery county. back to you. >> derrick ward, thank you so much. a word of warning in herndon, virginia this morning. police there are looking for a man who pretended to be a cop and sexually assaulted two men. the first on magnolia lane. this police impersonator approached a 17-year-old girl as she was going into her home. now police have a composite sketch. police say the man depicted fondled the teenager as he pretended to search her. we are told he forced her into his car, took her to a nearby parking lot and sexually soughted her. police are reviewing surveillance video to help in

their investigation. friends and family of a missing alexandria man can continue their search thanks to their community. a fund-raiser was held for lenny harris this weekend. a popular community activist was last seen september 21st at the charles houston rec center where he was a mentor. police suspect foul play in his disappearance. harris's cell phone was found on the wilson bridge. a security camera caught someone using his credit card. and then this week his car was found abandoned in prince george's county. >> good story about a community coming together. >> hopefully they can find him as well. it is 9:08. it's the video everyone is talking about. >> a mcdonald's worker seen beating two women with a metal rod. why many people said he shouldn't even have had that job in the first place. >> and the search intensifies for that missing baby in missouri. what the state's governor is to go to help find baby lisa. >> and we're streaming the dedication of the martin luther king jr. memorial live on our website, nbcwashington.com.

welcome back. to a story who has everyone talking this weekend. an argument between two customers and a cashier at a mcdonald's in new york city turns violent as the cashier beats the customers with a metal rod. we want to warn you the video may be disturbing to some. the confrontation starts when one of the customers slaps the cashier. 31-year-old macintosh grabs the metal rod from the kitchen and begins beating the customers from behind the counter. macintosh, who just finished serving manslaughter sentence in

may, continues beating them even as shocked co-workers plead for him to stop. now family members of the victim want to be why a convicted felon was behind the counter in the first place. >> we have questions as to why this gentleman would be behind a counter at a public facility like mcdonald's. you know, why wouldn't he be in the back working as opposed to being in the front with the criminal history that he has. >> after the video was posted to youtube, the owners of mcdonald's released this statement. it reads, i am extremely disturbed by the event the captured on tape and am concerned for those injured. the actions of this individual are unacceptable and not characteristic of my employees. this individual no longer works for my organization. macintosh has been charged with first and second degree assault. the national guard is now helping in the search for a missing missouri baby.

missouri governor jay nixon said 25 members of a guard police company will help look for 10-month-old lisa irwin, who went missing on october 4th. her parents say she disappeared from her crib sometime overnight. police searched an abandoned home after receiving a call about diapers and a backpack inside. but investigators say the items appear to have been in there longer than two weeks. stkpwhraot rural area just outside richmond was the epicenter of the east coast earthquake back in august. it was hit by a hurricane in the same week and then a tornado last week. no one was killed, but the damage tops $18 million. most of it uninsured. communities have held fund-raisers but some say they're just frustrated that the government will not help. and i know they had a fund-raiser wasn't it yesterday that they did? >> uh-huh. >> a lot of that money is going to go help rebuild a lot of

their schools. that must be frustrating for a lot of residents out there. >> no doubt about it. sometimes natural disasters, i don't know what the thresholds are, it's the size of the community and the damage. a relatively small community unfortunately they probably did not have enough damage, as weird as that sounds to say. >> yeah. >> tell that to the people who lost whatever they lost. good news for us, you don't have to worry about anything severe weather related on your sunday afternoon. how long the great stretch of sunshine will last coming up next. ♪

impressed for sure. >> it's rare we have had so much rain. we are 11 inches ahead of rainfall just since august 1st. so in the last two and a half  months we have had 11 inches more rain than average around here. that's actually hurt the pumpkin crops and the apple and grape crops for the winemakers out in virginia. all have had real struggles because of clouds, lack of sunshine and the extra moisture around here. we need a few more days of sunshine. we have at least one more coming our way for today. that is welcomed news. bright and sunny. a crisp, october afternoon is coming your way. temperatures will be three or four degrees warmer than averages for the middle of october. so get outside and enjoy your sunshine, everybody. a lot of great things to get outside and do today, up to and including perhaps the best thing of all which is being able to do nothing on a sunday. just sit down and relax. sunshine out there. a beautiful blue sky over washington. a thin ribbon of clouds

come. as a result we'll be dry today and 95% of us will be dry tomorrow as well. sunshine is expected all through the course of your sunday afternoon with temperatures in the low to mid-70s for highs this afternoon. there goes most of the clouds staying up to our north. there's this ribbon of cloud cover over northern maryland right now and right over parts of northwest washington. again, just dimming out the sunshine for the next couple hours. high pressure. more clouds the further north you go. eventually that weather front will slide down through here. that will increase the clouds through the course of the day tomorrow. then it restreets back to the north as a warm front during the day on tuesday. so we'll stay on the mild say with highs in the 70s today, tomorrow and tuesday before this real organizing shot of rain comes our way as we head towards late tuesday and especially wednesday. wednesday looks like the rainy day this upcoming week. today just plenty of sunshine. nice and mild out there with a light breeze.

>> reporter: i'm down here on the mall. i'm sorry. i didn't hear you. john, are you guys there? thank you very much. the crowd is really growing. i want to show you all the white hats people are wearing out here. it's the king -- it's not an organization. show the hat here. every person who comes in today is getting this hat as a memory of this memorial dedication. mayor vincent gray welcomed the crowd to the nation's capital. it wasn't just a polite welcome. he said he told that martin luther king, back in 1966, said it was unjust that the people in the district of columbia didn't have a right to vote in congress like all other americans. and gray specifically called on president obama to say something publicly and to support in congress the voting rights for citizens. that's been one of the most dramatic moments here this morning. gray said the country needs to

6:29 to be more precise. for tomorrow, increasing clouds. chance of a few sprinkles coming in late in the day tomorrow, especially north and west. but i think around town will be dry today and tomorrow. rain chances for tuesday and wednesday. we'll talk about the rest of the seven-day forecast coming up in just a couple minutes. >> all right. thanks, chuck. >> thank you. well, as thousands gather for today's mlk memorial dedication, thousands more are taking to the streets to protest everything from voting rights in the district to more jobs. three different groups converged on freedom plaza this weekend. local advocates for district voting rights stood next to protests for occupy d.c., who have been here more than two weeks. their goals converged as they all marched to the washington monument for a rally they called jobs and justice.

>> they said to me, reverend al, is this about the election. no, this is about our survival. >> the name is jobs and justice. it resonates completely. occupy wall street had its largest event after four weeks of demonstrations. thousands marched to protest what they call corporate greed and unfair economic and political system. a month of demonstrations inspired similar events across the country and around the world this weekend. crowds took up similar causes in south carolina and california and even london, australia, and japan. new finance reports revealing the strict of gop decision 2012. says texas governor rick perry reported raising $17 million in his race for president. former massachusetts governor mitt romney brought in more than 14 million. ron paul collected $8.2 million. and herman cain reports $2.8 million.

reports also show candidates in debt, including former house speaker newt gingrich, john huntsman and michele bachmann. president obama is calling on lawmakers to take a second look at his job bill. he's reintroducing the plan after senate did not pass it last week. the president urged lawmakers to reconsider in his weekly address. >> we're not focused on the concrete actions that will put people back to work right now. well, we're going to give them another chance. we're going to give them another chance to spend more time worrying about your jobs than keeping theirs. next week i'm urging members of congress to vote on putting hundreds of thousands of teachers back in the classroom, cops back on the streets, and firefighters back on the job. and if they vote no on that, they'll have to tell you why. >> president obama also said he will travel the country next week to tell lawmakers to stop

have received recognition from their member of congress or senator to say thank you for doing something special for children that did not have a home. >> the wednesday's child program was one of the ones singled out this year. freddie mac foundation ceo said getting the word out about the plight of these kids is important. >> the more people of influence who know about the need and who know what can be done. that's the great thing about wednesday's child and the great media ambassadors have had, you and the folks at nbc 4 really embraced this wednesday's child concept. >> while the program began here at nbc 4 washington, freddie mac has taken the idea across the country. news anchors, producers and support staff from those communities were among those on the stage to receive the angels in adoption award. >> thousands of children.

sunshine out there, there's the jefferson memorial. martin luther king memorial. 14th street bridge. commerce department. beautiful day outside. 56 degrees with bright sunshine. winds southwest at 8 miles per hour. starting to warm things up quite nicely. everybody here out of the 40s now. manassas, 54. dulles, 51 degrees. 58 towards huntingtown, maryland. and 50s pretty much area wide north to south. from the mason-dixon line to the north towards richmond, virginia to the south, temperatures now mid to upper 50s and climbing quickly with all that sunshine out there. no threat for rainfall. closest rain drops still north of pittsburgh. that's where they're going to stay for today and for most if not all of tomorrow as well. so a beautiful sunday afternoon coming up. plenty of sunshine. 6:30 this evening the sun goes down. it will be a very cool night once again. temperatures with mostly clear

skies overhead. drop into the 40s, to near 50 once again overnight tonight and into tomorrow. tomorrow, some of these clouds across the upper midwest will start to sneak in. for today, high pressure and sunshine and mild. more clouds further to the north. this is by 7:00 tonight. so you folks in northern maryland, southernmost pennsylvania, dimmed out sunshine later in the day. still relatively mild. this weather front comes through tomorrow morning. it will turn our winds around. we may have a few extra clouds around. so sunny and beautiful today. temperatures up into the mid-70s. if you're headed out to fedex field, eagles and the redskins kicking off at 1:00. 70 degrees your kickoff temperature. 73 for the ravens game up in baltimore, which kicks off at 4:15. tomorrow, clouds sneak back into the picture once again. might be a few sprinkles north and west of town. but in and around washington our rain chances hold off until tuesday. wednesday is washout day.
