we're following three big stories right now. a massive search effort under way at two different parks in maryland. police looksing for the 11-year-old missing since his mother's brutal murder. >> as tough as times may be, i know we will overcome. i know there are better days aahead. i know this because of the man towering over us. >> a message of hope for tens of thousands that attended the dedication of the martin luther king jr. memorial. it was a tale of two quarterbacks at fedex field. the eagles snap a losing streak,

white rex grossman is chanted off the field. >> intercepted. good evening. i'm aaron gilchrest. we begin with the search for william mcquain. they combed parks for signs of the 11-year-old. it's focused on two parks near the apartment. little bennett park and damascus recreational park. darcy spencer is there live. we understand that william's father's family came forward for the first time. >> reporter: they certainty did did. they said they lost touch with jane and william over the last several years, and unfortunately they found out about this tragic murder by watching the news and today they decided to conduct their own search for the missing boy. in the meantime montgomery county police and other police are here at the recreational park. this is a staging area for the search activity. this is a massive park, about 300 acres heavily wooded. police are not saying exactly why they were led to search

here. police from multiple agencies conducted a search for missing 11-year-old william mcquain in montgomery county. they used four-wheelers, cadaver dog and mounted officers and police on foot to look for the boy based on information learned through the investigation. >> information has been received and developed that has caused part of this investigation to turn towards a search. we still have the hope that william is alive. >> the his mother, jane, was found beaten and stabbed to death inside their condo wednesday night. william hasn't been seen since september 30th. her husband curtis lopez has been charged in the murder. >> i looked at the news, and it was my nephew. i fell on the floor and was like no. >> reporter: relatives of his biological father today news 4 that they hadn't seen william in years. they learned about the murder from the news.

they conducted their own search for the boy today near the german town condo. >> we're all here to find my nephew. and supporting the community to find my nephew and have hope and faith and keep prayers alive he's still alive. >> i'm here because i love my nephew and i love jane. i'm going to walk. i'm going to search until we find him. >> reporter: william's grandmother was among the searchers looking for the grandson she's never met. >> i'm hoping and praying that we can find little william, and he can -- we can come together and find out that he has a grandmother that loves him. >> reporter: back out live. you can see some of the activity going on here at the staging area. there's some indication that this search at least for today is beginning to wrap up. they've been out here at these parks for about eight hours today. they plan to end the search at least for today at dark, and they're still trying to figure out whether they'll continue the search tomorrow.

reporting live from damascus, darcy spencer, news 4. back to you. >> darcy, thank you. in charlotte, north carolina the suspect's former roommate tells news 4 she was alarmed to learn of these serious charges. melissa continues our team coverage with more on the investigation into curtis lopez. >> reporter: it's now been four days since curtis lopez was arrested here in charlotte, north carolina. he'll be in court here tomorrow afternoon. today police say they've been re-enter viewing acquaintances trying to figure out where his stepson william might be. his former roommate didn't want to appear on camera, but says she hasn't heard from him since he moved out three months ago. >> he didn't talk about his life. >> reporter: he lived in this charlotte home for a year. they met through lopez's cousin. she says he was often unemployed. though he kept to himself, she knew he was married to jane but knew nothing about william. when she saw lopez was arrested

franklin sang "precious lord take my hand." a favor of king's she san when he was ali. thousands gathered to celebrate the new memorial, a smaller ceremony delayed from august because of hurricane irene. president obama kept separate from the huge crowd for security reasons noted king would stand among america's greats. >> in this place he will stand for all time. a black preacher, no official rank or title, who somehow gave voice to our deepest dreams and our most lasting ideas. ♪ on the day it came to me happy birthday ♪ >> the bright sunday morning ceremony drew tears for some and joy for all those that came. >> this really brought back what we're supposed to be doing as a people, as a nation. >> i think it was very powerful, very moving.

i think it's long overdue. >> he was a great man and was very inspiring. >> reporter: tom scherrwood, news 4, washington. >> d.c. mayor vincent gray spoke at the dedication advocating for representation in congress calling it an unfulfilled part of his legacy. it was not a good day at fedex field. the redskins took on philadelphia and really just struggled to get on the score board. dan joins us live with this rough game to watch, dan. >> the eagles came into this game on life support, not only did they resuscitate their season, they possibly send the redskins into a season-long tailspin. rex grossman, the quarterback for the washington redskins, has seemingly gopten progressively worse, and he played so poorly today he was benched. even a bectacular comeback ft fourth quarter wasn't meant to

be. they didn't look sharp. first quarter, mike vick to brett selleck. they have a 7-0 lead. philly on top 20-0 before the skins got on the board. rex grossman's day went from bad to horrific in the third quarter. a miscommunication with fred davis leads to his third interception of the day. grossman wasn't done there. later in the third. another one to kurt coleman, who picked off grossman three times all by himself. grossman benched after four interceptions. it was too late even for a fourth quarter rally with john beck at the helm. 20-13 is the final. the quarterback debate is now on. >> i believe in myself no matter the if the whole stadium doesn't, coaching staff doesn't. you know, whatever the situation is. i believe in myself that every single play i'm going to get it

done. i fall back on that. >> all right. so you have rex and beck. we talk about that all preseason. mike shanahan says he will make a decision on a starter early this week. guys, we'll have a lot more from this game in a few minutes. >> thank you, dan. we are now getting some breaking news. a shocking and sad story right now out of las vegas, nevada. indy car driver dan weldon has died. he was flown to a hospital after he was involved in a massive 15-car wreck a little more than an hour or so ago. his vehicle hit part of the catch fence during that crash. three our drivers in the crash taken to the hospital. dan weldon's carry apparently flew over other vehicles as part of this crash. we'll stay on top of this breaking story for you and have much more on news 4 after the game tonight. and still ahead on this broadcast, a swap agreement that would free hundreds of palestinian militants a step closer to reality tonight.

a woman has been arrested following an early morning fire. that two-alarm fire broke out at 7:00 this morning at an apartment building on wood bury drive. the 28-year-old was arrested and charged with arson. 23 people have been misplaced. fortunately, no one was hurt. emotions running high in the middle east ahead of the prison swap. israel plans to release more than in exchange for a soldier who were captured. 285 were serving life sentences. israeli critics make sure it will fuel militant groups. several groups authorize the stwap. that deal expecteding to through on tuesday. still to come tonight, progress in an effort to rescue an american with a health emergency stranded at the south pole for weeks. chuck is monitoring rain in the work week forecast. what you can expect after this ♪

[ kingrey ] we all have a different journey, we're all searching for a different thing. even if we're all trying to get to the same end point, the journey is for different reasons. [ surfer ] a friend of mine, he found this wave. you know, that really got me going. i just started searching after that, and i want to try and find a better wave than that. [ dad ] a friend of ours called up, and he broke the news to her that she became the youngest person ever to discover a supernova. i'm sure that curiosity drives them. it's wanting to explain and understand here what it is that you are looking at, and why things are the way they are. kind of keeps you wondering, what else is out there, and what else we could possibly find. ♪ [ zack ] information is powerful, but it is how we use it that will define us. ♪ ♪ a plane is finally rescued an ill researcher who waited for weeks for a ride from the south pole. she had a stroke seven weeks ago and requested an emergency evacuation. extreme weather conditions have prevented anyone from getting to her. finally this weekend, though, there was an opening in the weather. right now her plane is headed to antarctica. from there she'll be taken to a hospital in new zealand.

>> that's the middle of the antarctic winter. it's 72 below zero air temperature, not wind chill, over much of the last couple weeks down there. when they say tough weather in antarctica, they mean it. did you like today? >> i loved it. >> nice day outside today. great weekend really. that's two nice ones in a row, everybody, and the early lean on next weekend i'm optimistic for more sunshine. three weekends in a row. for now let's enjoy this one, shall we? a little early fall color coming into washington now. the peak of fall foliage around here 7 to 10 days away. typically the last 10 days of october are the best color in town. sometimes that lingers into early november as well. just beautiful out there with a clear sky in the late afternoon and early evening time frame around here. 68 mild degrees here in washington. headed up into the low 70s today. another day with sunshine and slightly above average weather.

winds, though, have remained breezier than i thought they would be. south-southwest at 20 miles per hour now. not a whole lot of gustiness to the wind, but a steady breeze out there. temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70 around the metro area right now, and that's the rule across all of virginia and maryland. with that little breeze out there, now that the sun is going down in the next 10 to 15 minutes, it will feel chilly out there for the evening plans. 67 in haggarstown and 68 in martinsburg and 68 degrees at the naval academy in annapolis. on the radar loop over the last three hours, the majority goes through pennsylvania. there are linger showers across parts of central ohio that may sneak towards the western slopes of the mountains in the next few hours. there's your evening planner.

mid-60s through 7:00, back down into the mid and upper 50s by 11:00 p.m. a gradual increase coming primely after midnight tonight, but most of that moisture there is going to dry up as it comes down over the mountains. even though we see an increase in clouds, i don't think any rain chances are extremely limited. might get a couple of sprinkles tomorrow with the weather front into the the northern parts of maryland. we're stopped at 5:30 in the morning tomorrow morning on the future cast. showers and maybe a few sprinkles in northern and western maryland on the western side of the mountains. that's about it. so for your evening, clear skies and breezy. evening temperatures in the 50s and 60s, generally in the 40s to get you started tomorrow morning and then a nice day coming tomorrow with an increase in cloud cover. any rain chances hold off until the second half of tuesday, and wednesday is when we get most of the rain around here. next weekend so far so good. >> all right. thank you, chuck. appreciate it. pretty rough take for the redskins, especially for rex

we go back out to fedex field and dan helle. it had to be rough for rex grossman to hear people calling for john beck late in the game today. >> it was a total recipe for disaster out here today, aaron. you had the defense coming out flate.

they have a 20-0 hole. the offense was subpar, and then you throw four rex grossman interceptions, impossible to win the ball game. 20-13 the final out here at fedex field. amazing it was even that close after the performance by the redskins today. first redskins drive. rex grossman, desperately trying to make something happen. everybody happy at this point in the game, but rex grossman was not feeling it from the beginning. going deep for jabar gaffney, intercepted by kurt coleman. good play there by coleman. and the eagles are going to take it over at the 18 yard line. michael vick going to do what michael vick does. marches down the field and caps an 82-yard drive with a touchdown strike to his tight end, brent selleck. that makes it 7-0. eagles do it through the air and on the ground. next drive, next touchdown. lashuan mccoy scoots in to make it 14-0. he had 126 yards on the day. later in the second quarter, the eagles getting all the bounces. how about selleck?

tips it twice to himself in between a pair of redskins defenders, makes the catch that sets up a philly field goal. rex grossman was just terrible in the first half. looking deep again for gaffney. picked off by nate allen, and that sets up another field goal. the eagles go into halftime with a 20-3 lead. third quarter, redskins get a break. michael vick out for a series. vince young picked off by deangelo hall. landry is putting the pressure on. the redskins get the ball at the 18. this could have been a game changer. rex looking for fred davis who had a good game today. instead picked off by kurt coleman again. they said that was fred davis' fault because there was a miscommunication there. davis himself said that. coleman had rex figured out today. redskins get the ball back later in the third. grossman, scrambles, waits, and fires and guess what? he's picked again. my goodness, the fourth interception of the game, and that was the end of rex's day.

benched for john beck. rex, 9-22, 143 yards and four interceptions. in the fourth the skins bet on beck. beck did play pretty well. finds terrence aurs tin all the way down to the 2-yard line, and that sets up old number 12. back in the day they would say he's calling his own number, but we know better than that. quarterbacks don't call their own number these days. beck gets in there. that's a touchdown and makes it 20-13. that's as close as the redskins get. they pick up a third down and run out the clock. the eagles are 2-4. the redskins drop to 3-2 and the quarterback debate is on. here's grossman on how he has to handle a game like today. >> got to flush it. i mean, there's so many times in this league that you face adversity for one reason or another. you know, you go to go back to your core belief that, you know, i believe in myself no matter if

the whole stadium doesn't, coaching staff doesn't. whatever the situation is, i believe in myself that every single play i'm going to get it done. so, you know, i fall back on that. >> do you think maybe you waited too long to pull rex after that fourth interception? >> well, you know, you want to give a guy an opportunity, especially when he gets all the reps during the week. he has to prove to me he can't come back. i told rex at the end of the first half, when he got a drive going, i thought we'd get things going. i thought he had a great pass there, and he put it in the perfect position. you can't second-guess yourself. all you take a look at is a guy like john came in and really played well. >> when i came in, we had the wholeness of the whole fourth quarter. that was enough time to potentially win the game, and that was the number one thing on my mind. we're a couple scores away from tieing it up potentially and sending it into overtime. right now i'm thinking about those plays. whatever happens next, my next

time on the field i want to be fully ready and do the best i can. >> all right. so john beck was 8-15 for 117 yards. pretty decent numbers. maybe better when you think about this fact. he hasn't even practiced with the first team offense since the preseason. he's been the scout team quarterback. rex grossman has received all the reps, and that's the big question going forward. who will be the starting quarterback for the washington redskins from here on out? is it going to be rex grossman or john beck? mike shanahan is going to evaluate that and make a decision early in the week. the other big news out of this game, injuries. the offensive line is just ravaged. cory lick steiger has an injured acl and will be out for the season likely. chris cooley took a big hit from he's getting a broke index finger. he'll be out for a while.
