new pillsbury egg scrambles. ♪ a brand new morning good morning, everyone. welcome to "news4 midday." i'm barbara harrison. it is monday, october 17, 2011. later today, charlotte, north carolina the man accused of killing a germantown mother is due in court. curtis lopez will have his first appearance on a homicide charge this afternoon. jane mcquain was found stabbed and beaten to death in her home last wednesday. her 11-year-old son william mcquain is still listing. the police tracked the mother's

suv to charlotte where they arrested lopez last week. montgomery county police started a second day of muching for william mcquain. one search is taking place now on clarksburg road about five miles from the boy's germantown home. news4's megan mcgrath is also there and joins us live with more. good morning. >> well, good morning, barbara. this is actually a smaller scale search than what we saw over the weekend. about 20 or so officers here on the grounds of the old comcast building. that's located just off of 270 if you are familiar with this area. and there is also a second search going on at a different location in damascus. here at the comcast campus they are concentrating their efforts in the beginning on a wooded section that's near the parking lot area. they are also going to be taking a look down along 270. the fence line between this property and the highway. now, of course, they are looking for 11-year-old william mcquain. his mother, jane, was found stabbed and beaten to death inside of her condominium.

william has not been seen since the end of september or beginning of october. jane mcquain's estranged husband curtis lopez has been arrested in north carolina and charged with her murder. the big question, though, is where is her son, william mcquain. i'm joined by captain starks. talk about what brought you here, why this location? >> well, the detectives are just working on? information and leads they have developed. i can't be any more specific than that. and it is not a hunch or a guess but it is real information that we have and we have to proactively and aggressively work on the leads as they come in. we are still working this investigation with the hope that william will be found alive. >> reporter: talk about the area we are talking. it is wooded and it is near areas that can be accessed by car? >> that's correct. ing in fact, the teams that are up here searching now have used these grounds for training purposes. so it is ironic but they are quite familiar with the lay of

the land here. >> reporter: talk about the weekend search. there was a large-scale search in two locations, damascus regional park and little bennett regional park. did you find anything promising in that? >> no. we didn't. we had over 80 people involved in those searches and those two locations. we are able now, though, to check those off so that we have looked at those. that doesn't stop us from going back but we feel good about having checked those areas. >> reporter: tell me about the second location, what kind of a spot is that? >> it is a smaller park area that's adjacent to residential area and just south of did a mass -- damascus. i think they plan to be out here most of the day. possibly until dark. >> reporter: thanks so much for joining us. so the search is under way. a little -- about an hour or so ago. maybe 45 minutes ago. again, a smaller-scale search than what we saw over the weekend. but they are very methodically

going through the wooded section taking a look at the ground and signs that were perhaps something recently disturbed in and the like. they are continuing to interview people and develop leads and again, that's what brought them to this location with information they got in a lead. still obviously a very active investigation and they are hoping to find william alive. at this point that just remains to be seen. barbara, back to you. >> thank you, megan. right now the man suspected in the disappearance of a local woman in aruba is in court. a judge in aruba will consider whether to release gary gierodano. he has been held on the island since august 5, three days after robyn gardner disappeared. gierodano told investigators he never came back -- or that she never came back from a snorkeling trub. authorities said they believed gierodano played a role in her disappearance. prosecutors called gierodano a suspect in a suspicious death. gardner's body has not been found. traffic is flowing smoothly

again this midday in the suitland area after a tractor trail earn accident turned the morning commute into a mess for many drivers. the crash closed allentown road at branch avenue. tracee wilkins has more on the cleanup there. >> reporter: after getting the tractor trailer off of allentown road there was two things that need to be cleaned up. all of this wood that was left behind after the truck crashed into the wall. secondly, a lot of diesel that spilled into a storm drain. just before 5:00 this morning, a tractor trailer traveling with allentown road lost control. it slam flood the underpass for the branch avenue bridge. the truck was carrying a large load of wooded fence parts. the shipment fell off of the truck and into the roadway. the cab of the truck was totaled. the spokesmen say the driver was somehow able to crawl out of the twisted cab. he's now recovering from serious but nonlife threatening injuries. meanwhile, prince george's county hazardous materials crews were worried about the diesel

spilling from the truck into the nearby storm drain. crews immediately began using absorbent to stop the throw and eventually built a filter fence on a nearby storm drain to help catch the fuel. both lanes of allentown road were closed for large part of the morning. the eastbound lanes were the first to reopen and carries most of the inbound traffic. and that was just in time for rush hour. meanwhile, the westbound rains remained closed. creating a bit of a headache for some commuters. what do you think about this? >> actually, there's nothing you can do about it. i heard about it on the news this morning. it is one thing after another. >> reporter: much of an inconvenience for you? >> yes. that's very -- we didn't know what was happening because there was nobody to direct. we have to find ourselves how to go through. >> reporter: the spokesman with the hazardous materials department for prince george's county tell tuesday diesel contamination will not be an issue for residents. no problems for drinking water. they are saying the diesel went into a storm drain and that they

were able to contain it and are continuing to clean it up. in suitland, tracee wilkins, news4. >> everything is also back to normal on south capitol street in southeast washington. eastbound lanes near 295 were closed for some time this morning. because of crumbling pavement in the overpass. crews did some emergency road work on 295 which also caused some delays. traffic, though, is flowing as usual right now. it is expected to be a mild fall afternoon. tom kierein will tell us what we can expect. tom? >> good morning. we have had quite a bit of cloudiness this morning. but just in the last hour and a half or so the clouds have drifted off to the east and that's a live puck toicture. looking to the east, you can see a blue sky there. welcomed sunshine has returned. and this all occurred in about the last hour and a half or so. you can see the clouds are reglyning to quickly move away. also a look at cloudiness over

southern maryland, northern neck. there as well it will clear out through the afternoon. right now temperatures are beginning to climb. we are hitting the 60s throughout most of the area. now 63 at reagan national. we are in the mid 60s in southern maryland near the bay. it is near 60 out of the mountains of western maryland. but it will be warming up. today should be the warmest day of the week. this afternoon, sunny and mild. light breezes and out of the southwest. and as temperatures climb into the low and mid 70s by mid afternoon. then some change is on the way. rain returns. i will have the latest on that. we will look at that time rest of the week and a look into the weekend. that will be coming up in just a couple of minutes. >> thanks so much. we are going to see what the traffic is looking like now. we have the latest on the roads. >> good morning. we had a tough commute. still seeing a problem now. northbound adelphi road. have you your right lane blocked between rigs road and new hampshire avenue due to a water main break there. and if you are taking the beltway it is much, much better.

here is a look at the beltway in montgomery county. traveling inner loop and outer loop, you are clear at coalsville road. travel time where you can -- traveling at 54 miles per hour. taking the beltway in virginia, clear as well as you make your way from robinson terminal. not seeing any delays from you on the inner or outer loop. back to you, barbara. >> okay, thanks. new today, shooting in southeast washington. police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a man in the 1,200 block of stephens road southeast. that's in the barry farm area. they haven't released the victim's name or said if they know what led to the shooting. also new today police are searching for the suspect of a deadly stabbing in northeast washington. around 1:30 it happened this morning along i-street. police say the victim was stabbed multiple times. the victim's name has not been released. so far no arrests have been made. a trial is set to begin today for a silver spring teacher accused of punching and choking several her first grade students.

susan burk was arrested in february after one of her students went to police. she was later indicted on child abuse and assault charges. nine of her students at green castle elementary school said she kicked, punched or scratched them. later today a team of engineers and architects is expected to look for additional damage to the national cathedral caused by, of course, the august earthquake. the difficult access team will repel down the west front of the cathedral. this is the same team that you will retin respected the washington monument after the quake. workers have already started repairs to some of the cathedral's spire which is were damaged. the cathedral remains closed. it is scheduled to reopen to the public next month. you can call it a reality check. the redskins fans. it appears the redskins may have a new starting quarterback after the team lost to the philadelphia eagles yesterday. the skins qb threw four interceptions in the 2013 loss

the supreme leader of iran says iran will deliver an unforgettable response to any improper actions from the united states over an alleged iranian plot to kill the saudi

ambassador to the united states. the ayatollah says that the u.s. is trying to isolate iran from the rest of the world. last week the u.s. said it had broken up a plot to kill the saudi ambassador in washington. iranian official also denied claims that a high-level u.s. diplomat met wednesday with an iranian counterpart over the plot. iran and the u.s. have no dip low in theic relations. right now, president obama is kicking off his latest bus tour in north carolina. the president arrived in asheville, north carolina, in the last 30 minutes as he tries to win public support for key pieces of his jobs plan. he wants congress to act on a provision that will provide $35 billion in assistance to state and local governments and $50 billion on new infrastructure. the three-day bus tour will focus on a number of smaller communities in north carolina and in virginia as well. >> there is no reason why we should sit here and watch the best highways and newest

airports being built in china. we should be building them right here in the united states of america! >> the three-day bus tour will focus on a number of small communities as we just said in north carolina and virginia. first lady michelle obama is hosting special guests at the white house this afternoon and will honor a number of schools across the country for their efforts to fight childhood obesity. each school participated in a one-year program called the healthier u.s. school challenge it encourages lunch rooms to serve more fruits and vegetables and develop healthier menu options. today marks one month since occupy wall street protests started. similar demonstrations have been held across the country and around the world, too. all with messages of anti-corporate greed. in chicago police literally tore apart a tent city in grant park when protesters who did not have a permit refused to leave. the crowds held large demonstrations in europe this weekend as well. and they are cleaning up after

groups smashed store windows and burned cars there. the civil rights activist cornell west is due in a d.c. courtroom in about two hours. he was one of 19 people arrested at a protest called occupy supreme court. it was an thank you war and anti-corporate greed demonstration. the group no cure for that posted this video of the rally on youtube. west and others refused to leave the supreme court grounds. he joined the protest after leaving the dedication of the martin luther king memorial. we have a beautiful day developing out there right now, tom joins because look at what we can expect the rest of the monday. >> started out gray and now would turned blue. wonderful blue sky has now appeared off of -- to our west. this is the view from the sky watcher camera and golden sunlight illuminating the fall foliage which is really beginning to show up now locally. still mostly green around washington. but we have a few individual trees that are showing their ought up glory.

there is the puck tour over the potomac river and monuments. they are gleaming in shine, too. reagan national to the right, just downriver, it is 63 and mostly sunny there now and it is dried out a little by. we had a weak front come through, winds now out of the north at around 5 to 10 miles an hour. humidity is low at 45%. so a delightful autumn day is under way now. we had a wonderful weekend, too. we are going to keep it going here the rest of the afternoon. it is rather cool, though, in western maryland upon near 60 now. shenandoah valley, panhandle of west virginia, areas from the blue ridge to the bay, all the way to the eastern shore, it is in the low to mid 60s now and we will continue to climb. it may climb about another 10 degrees with a high by later this afternoon. making this monday the warmest day of the week ahead. but a beautiful day 'round the shenandoah valley and blue ridge where there is peak color now there. little bit past peak now out of the mountains of far western maryland. still some beautiful autumn color there. well over the last 12 hours,

cloud cover we had this morning, even had a few sprinkles in western maryland, panhandle of west virginia. it is clear now. we have a few high clouds passing over washington. still mostly cloudy in southern maryland. northern neck. lower eastern shore getting a little bit of light rain there. but this is continuing to track off to the east. that should be ending there in the next perhaps hour or so. as we go forward, over the next 24 hours, we will have this continued clearing through the afternoon and then overnight tonight we will have a mostly clear sky early evening and then there is a time frame. by later tonight, though, we will begin to have a few clouds drifting back in again from time to time. partly cloudy evening. then during the day tuesday, a lot of clouds beginning to move in from the south. and those will be out ahead of a weather maker, big area of low pressure coming our way that will give us quite a bit of rain. looks like late tuesday. as we start off tuesday morning a little bit of shine. so for the rest of the monday, lots of sunshine, beautiful blue

sky, and temperatures will be climbing into the low and mid 70s this afternoon with a light breeze coming in out of the north and shifting a bit into the southwest around 5 to 15. overnight tonight, clouds in and out through the evening hours. sunset is at 6:27. and we will have a clear to partly cloudy evening and turning cooler by midnight and back down to near 60 degree was variable wind around 5 to 10 miles per hour. now let's take a look at the next several days. by tomorrow morning, with some sunshine, we will be near 50 degrees by dawn. then during the day tuesday, increasing clouds and high temperatures reaching near 70 by the afternoon. and then after sunset and into the evening hours we will begin to see rain moving south to north across virginia and beginning to hit the metro area, looks like, by late tuesday evening and perhaps around midnight. rain likely after midnight. tuesday night and continuing off and on through the dawe on wednesday and into wednesday evening.

we are going to have a wet period for perhaps about 36 hours. finally ending late wednesday night and then by dawn thursday, just a small chance of a few lingering sprinkles and clearing out thursday afternoon. blustery northerly and northwesterly wind, though, will really cool it down. we will have highs near 60 thursday and down near 40 by dawn friday. and sunny friday. highs in the upper 50s. we will have a bright sunny weekend coming up. high just near 60. great for outdoor hiking and reck rowation and fall activities and hunting pumpkins and all of that. >> looks beautiful. wonderful to see those big brown sunshine on the weekend. thanks, tom. let's see if we have something wonderful for the roads out there. probably not do you have good news for us? >> i wish. if you are traveling north on adelphi road, water main break still taking away your right line. between rigs road and new hampshire avenue. now on to the some good news.

. an american woman that had a stroke on the south pole is now in new zealand for medical treatment. a plane brought renee doceur to christ church thch morning. the research manager had a stroke in august. the emergency planes could not get to her because of severe weather on the south pole. she said the rescue flight also put her at risk. >> coming from south pole on the unpressurized plane which i was worried about there, whether it could do some more serious damage or stroke or who knows what else, they kept the plane at very low altitudes. they knew what to do if something happened to me. luckily nothing was -- a

slammed into an overpass in suitland, maryland. the accident shut down allentown road at branch avenue for hours this morning. hazmat crews say this contained large amounts of diesel fuel that fell into a nearby storm drain and the fuel did not affect drinking water there. right now, montgomery county police are combing through wooded areas in search of clues in the disappearance of william mcquain. later this afternoon his stepfather is scheduled to emir in a courtroom in charlotte, north carolina. lopez is accused of killing williams' mother, jane mcquain. new revelations today in the case of a missing baby in kansas city. the mother, lisa irwin, now admits she was drunk the night her daughter disappeared two weeks ago and also shared that she thinks she will be arrested soon. nbc's peter alexander has that story. >> i was the last one with her. and from judging on how the questioning went, that's kind of -- i a feeling i have.

and the main fear with that is if people are going to stop looking for her and i will never see her again. i will never know what happened. >> reporter: nearly two weeks passed since the parents say their infant daughter, seen here in video shot earlier this year, vanished from her crib. you told us police accused you of killing your daughter. how has that been authorities to focus on you at times? >> terrible because -- my daughter is missing. the last thing want to have to worry about is something like that. you shouldn't have to put any energy, any time or effort into anything bunt finding her. >> reporter: just before 5:00 on the night lisa disappeared, deborah, who is 25, was spotted on surveillance tape with her brother at a grocery store. buying baby supplies and boxed

wine. now for the first time deborah admits she was drinking at home in the hours before she says lisa vanished. were you drinking that night? >> yes. >> reporter: how much? >> enough to be drunk. >> reporter: you were drunk? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: a lot of people are going to say deborah, you were drunk that night, is there any chance that you did anything to hurt your daughter you are just not telling us? >> no, no, no. if i thought there was a chance i would say it. no. no. i don't think that alcohol changes a person enough to do something like that. >> reporter: deborah now says she last saw her daughter when she hut her to bed at 6:40 p.m., not 10:30 as the family first reported. it was the first time lisa's father, jerry, electrician, had ever worked an overnight shift making repairs at this kansas city starbucks. do you in any way question is not telling you or police everything she knows? >> no. there's -- there's no question to be had there.

i know who she is. i know what kind of mother she is. >> reporter: when jeremy got home just before 4:00 in the morning he said he found the front dur unlocked. several lights on and a window screen tampered with. the police have tried to re-create how an abductor may have broken into the home through that window. does it seem feasible to you someone could have gotten in while and you your two boys were sleeping and wouldn't have heard a thing? >> our beds are on the exact opposite end of the house and she sleeps with the fan on high. >> reporter: you told us the police told you failed a lie detector test. what question or questions did they say that you failed? >> they said that i failed when they asked me where she was. >> reporter: deborah and jeremy said they refuse to let detectives re-interview the half brothers. >> they said they heard noises. but i don't know if that was before we went to sleep or after. i have not sat down and talked

to them about it specifically to not have to put them through anything else. >> reporter: on sunday, the missouri national guard joined the exhaustive search for baby lisa combing open and wooded areas near the irwin family home. also this weekend, inside the basement of this abandoned house in the neighborhood investigators discover ad child's backpack and used diapers. but police discounted that finding. meanwhile, detectives have now questioned a local handyman with a criminal history who had been unaccounted for since before lisa's disappearance. still police say that they have no suspects, including lisa's parents. if the person who took your baby daughter is out there watching this right now, what do you say to them? >> she needs her family. we need her. we are losing more sanity as each day progresses. >> peter alexander reporting. one more development. the family tells nbc news they

expect to announce this afternoon that they are bringing in an attorney. the manslaughter case against michael jackson's doctor is on hold for today. last witnesses for the prosecution was supposed to testify today but had a death in his family. dr. conrad murray is accused of giving jackson the last dose of the powerful propofol that killed the singer. an expert on propofol started his testimony thursday before the judge called a recess. then his father passed away over the weekend. murray trial will stay in recess until after the funeral. when the defense begins its case it is eggs expected to call 15 witnesses, including police officers, experts, and some character witnesses. we are going to check in again with tom kierein with the latest on our forecast. >> after a cloudy start, the sunshine has broken out. there is a live picture from our sky watcher camera looking towards the southeast and national cathedral there in the middle distance. way off in the distance, right of your screen, hd, there is the potomac river.

on the horizon, prince george's county. over prince george's county still a few high clouds. right now camera panning into virginia and you can see rosslyn there, high-rises of ballston off in the distance. and a beautiful blue sky just a few puffy clouds passing over arlington now. live picture looking towards tysons corner. now looking towards loudoun county and now here we are just seeing into montgomery county. and we do have quite a bit of sunshine here and quite a few trees showing beautiful color. temperatures around the region with that sun have hit the mid 60s throughout much of the area and we will continue to climb into the early -- by early afternoon, mid 70s, over the last 12 hours, few morning sprinkles. those have dissipated as the sunshine increased. west to east. and it will be with us the rest of the afternoon as highs reach the low to mid 70s. clear sky through the evening. few clouds developing by late evening and by dawn, down near 50 degrees. partly sunny morning tuesday. clouds rolling in during the afternoon with highs near 70.

problems here either. clear from 395, edsall, 14th street bridge. we have a warning for drivers who use park and ride lots. park in an actual spot or you are going to have to paw the price. after a week of written warnings the virginia state police are issuing tickets for those parked illegally near woodbridge. they say parking has gotten out of hand there with drivers parking on the yaz grass and creating a safety hazard. on top of a ticket police say some cars will be towed. we are learning more about the federal investigation into d.c. mayor vincent gray's election campaign. "the washington post" is reporting that fingerprints have been collected from former mayoral candidate brown as well as campaign consultant. those prints could help determine who handed -- handled the documents. the money orders and envelopes full of cash. brown claims the gray campaign paid him and offered him a job in exchange for launching verbal

attacks against then mayor fenty. election day less than a month away now. it appears people in virginia could care less. a new poll finds a vast majority of voters don't care about the upcoming general assembly elections. the poll that christopher newport university found 60% of voters say that they are paying little attention to the races while 10% say they aren't paying any atntion at all. only 13% say they care a lot about the election coming up. political analysts claim apathy on a number of uncontested races. we districting in the -- is in the spotlight as lawmakers in maryland gather today for a special session there. governor o'malley formally presenting his redistricting plan to the general assembly for the state's eighth congressional seats. the lawmakers then plan to debate the plan for the rest of the day. and the general assembly must plan a redistricting bill before the 2012 presidential primary elections. redskins fans are hoping for

a brilliant season. they were after 3-1 start. the hopes are a bit dimmer after the skins fell to the philadelphia eagles yesterday. eagles jumped out to a 20-0 lead in first half and never looked back. they were helped by skins quarterback rex grossman's four interceptions. head coach mike shanahan benched grossman in the fourth quarter in favor of john beck. dan hellie caught up the kwoech after the game to assess the loss. >> reporter: bye week rust is there such a thing? >> we only had the ball 21 plays in the first half. couldn't get anything going. we have to make third downs. just didn't seem to make any. had a couple of penalties that put us back. couple of mistakes. and they did a good job controlling the tempo of the game in that first half. pleased with the defense in the second half. they came back and shut them out. opportunities on offense to at least get back in rhythm.

field goal here and there. just couldn't but the ball in the end zone. >> reporter: you had some interceptions from your defense. they shut them out there the second half like you said. do you think that maybe you waited too long to pull rex after the fourth interception? >> well, you know, you have to give him an opportunity. he has to prove to me that he can come back. i told rex i felt rex at the end of the first half, get a drive going. we may get things going. thought he had a great pass there. you can't second-guess yourself. you take a look at it, he came in and played really well. >> reporter: came in cold and did play well. why, though, at the end was there no hurry-up offense? you guys seemed to be taking your time there at the end of the game? >> first of all, you want to score. when you do kick off, you have plenty of time to stop it and the football to win the football game. so many times a team gets in a hurry-up offense and forget one
