his disappearance was the focus of extensive searches today. we have live team coverage today. melissa? >> reporter: now the hearing lasted just a few minutes in charlotte today. we are not sure when he'll head to montgomery county, he should be leaving here in just a few days. curtis lopez shuffled into the north carolina courtroom in shackles and orange jump suit monday afternoon. during the hearing, he said he wanted to waive extradition lopez had friends and family sitting in the front row of the courtroom. his public defender would not comment on the case. he led his family outside after the hearing. a friend outside told us he is shocked. >> he is a friend, you know? i'm blown away by it. it's disheartening. he's not the person i knew. >> reporter: nbc 4 obtained the

search warrant from where lopez was arrested and his wife's honda crv. his girlfriend was behind the wheel of the car when she crashed here. she told investigators she was driving her boyfriend's mother's car. mcquain's suv had her maryland registration and insurance information inside the front door pocket. there were two cell phones in the vehicle and 18 copies of a marriage certificate. at the hotel, police found a box cutter knife, a credit card belonging to jane mcquain, nine 100 dollar bills. he's waived extradition. the authorities in maryland make arrangements to come retrieve him. >> lopez spent time in prison before. over the years, he's had a slew

of addresses in charlotte. his former roommate says she hasn't heard from him since he moved out of her home three months ago. >> it's scary, yeah. to know that i was that close with somebody. >> reporter: we may not know until tomorrow exactly when lopez will be picked up here in charlotte, north carolina. the earliest he could leave is sometime tuesday afternoon or evening. back to you. >> thank you, melissa. in maryland, a team of volunteers joined montgomery police combing two wooded areas for any signs of 11-year-old william mcquain. pat collins continues the coverage in clarksburg. pat? >> reporter: the number one priority for montgomery county police is find william mcquain. but so far, no luck.

they searched over the weekend. they searched again today. police out looking for william mcquain, the 11-year-old boy, missing now for 17 days. how do they know where to look? well, kenney has an answer. he says william and hids mom, jane mcquain and his stepfather would come to his house in the damascus to socialize and eat barbecue. in fact, he says they were all there three weeks ago, right before all of this happened. >> we were cooking out. i have a little fire over there. we were grilling out by the picnic table. it was within the last month, three to four weeks ago. >> curtis lopez -- >> and william and jane were here. >> reporter: more searching off route 270 in clarksburg. police in the fields, in the

woods, near the drainage pond. now, these are not arbitrary exercises. police say they have a reason to search, but they are not broadcasting it. >> it's not a hunch and it's not a guess. it's based on investigative leads and information detectives have that brought us here. >> reporter: the time line, october 12th. the boy's mother jane mcquain found murdered in her germantown condo. investigators believe she had been dead for some time. october 13th, the next day, curtis lopez, the victim's husband charged in the murder. he was arrested in charlotte, north carolina. september 30th, the day 11-year-old william mcquain was last seen in his germantown neighborhood. so, will there be a search tomorrow? if so, where will they be tomorrow? we may not know the answers to

it was a nice weekend. saturday, 71 degrees. sunday 71 degrees. today has been right around 70 degrees. most neighborhoods. it's been a fantastic day. some folks had the day off. 68 degrees is where we are. only a few high clouds left around the area. that, with a cold front that moved through this morning. doreen, those were the clouds you saw early on. they began to break up. watch the loop here. satellite and radar. they broke up around 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. leaving us with a gorgeous day. there's a few clouds out there now. the cold front is going to start to move back as a warm front. tomorrow, again, a mild day for us. a nice evening, too. we drop off to 60 degrees and around 60 by 11:00 p.m. you know what? midweek, after a transitional day tomorrow is looking wild. i'll tell you why when i return.

back to you. >> thanks, veronica. now, to that disappointing loss for the redskins. john beck was called in to take over for a struggling rex grossman. the question now, who will start in next sunday's game. dan hellie live in redskins park. i'm guessing they are not talking too much about who that is going to be just yet. >> not just yet. the most important position on this team is still up in the air. mike shanahan says he will make a decision on the starting quarterback on wednesday. rex grossman's four interception performance against the eagles that resulted in a 20-13 loss. grossman had his worst game since arriving in washington yesterday. two interceptions in the first half and two more in the third quarter. he now has 11 turnovers in five games this season. rex's fourth interception against the eagles sent him to

the bench for good. he was replaced by john beck who came in the fourth quarter andtn the game. now, the question is who will get the call on sunday? as of today, mike shanahan has not made up his mind. wednesday's decision will be made based on who is going to start in the best interest of the organization. i have not made up my mind right now. i have talked to our coaches to get their opinions on the plays. you go through the game situations. look at who is going to be active and who gives you the best chance to win. we constantly do that. that will never change. i believe in both these guys. they can both play. i know these guys got what it takes. which ever direction we go, that guy is going to get an opportunity to show us what he can do on game day.

after the martin luther king jr. memorial yesterday. president obama kicked off a three-day bus tour. he flew to north carolina to start the tour. at the airport, a senate bill put the jobs bill on the shelf. he called on congress to take action piece-by-piece. >> if they vote against taking steps we know will put americans back to work right now, right now, then they are not going to have to answer to me. they are going to have to answer to you. >> republicans say the president's bill amounts to more stimulus spending. they say it didn't work in 2009 and don't think it will work now. >> maryland's general assembly was back for a legislation. the change comes after the most recent census data. some minority groups say the new

they include life-saving chemotherapy treatments. what are we talking about an what do you think is causing the shortage? >> we are talking about chemo drugs as you mentioned to treat juvenile lieukemileukemia, brea cancer, colon cancer, also drugs to fight intensive infections. what the investigation is being conducted by elijah cummings. a handful of companies are big up these drugs in short supply and trying to sell them for astro nom cal prices. a drug to fight leukemia usually sells to hospitals at $12 a vial, they were selling it over $900 a vial.

the average mark up was 650%. >> wow. >> it's a problem. >> people's lives are on the line in the meantime while this is being worked out. lisa, what is being done to help patients resolve this? >> children's national medical center today, they have done fairly well. they have, on a couple occasions had to substitute drugs that are almost identical. other hospital that is treat juvenile lieu keeukemia had to treatment. what they are doing, basically, is having their pharmacist do what they can to find the supply and try to be sure the patient who is need the drugs most are getting it. >> it's hard to imagine anybody would interfere with people who need life-saving drugs, getting them. you have more coming up on nbc

we head to fairfax and falls church. 70 degrees the temperature only right around 70. prince george's county. now, it's 72 degrees. temperatures certainly cooperating. for the evening and overnight, it's going to be fairly seasonable. so comfortable here for fall. we drop to 61 degrees by 9:00. 59 by 11:00 p.m. early tomorrow morning, in the 50s. 54 to 52 degrees. that means we'll be a couple degrees above the average. feeling like fall around here. the doppler radar is quiet. we are going to see showers showing up on doppler. i think when we get on the other side of tomorrow night and the other side of midnight. the cold front through the area, down around richmond and roanoke, virginia. the same front heads back through us. it's going to be mild. it's wet for wednesday. wednesday is the downpour day out of the week. the same low pressure system that delivered the flooding.

that's what's going to be moving. here is a snapshot of early wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. wet across the area. a 24 hour period through wednesday night, late. wet and then turning very windy. 3/4 to inch and a half of rain on wednesday. thursday feeling like november with the wind coming through. again, nice, pleasant from the mid-60s to upper 50s around the area. for tomorrow morning, 45 to 52 degrees. so, a start that's going to feel a lot like fall around here. tomorrow afternoon, again, not bad, either. again, back to the low 70s for tomorrow. we'll have more clouds coming our way for the evening hours. the rain starting after midnight to around 2:00 a.m. on wednesday. 24 hours of rain and it's soggy for wednesday. then windy for thursday with a high temperature of 59 degrees. that means, of course, chilly air follows for friday.

hospital. no word on his condition now. a federal grand jury probes into allegations of pay offs in a 2010 campaign for mayor. grays comments follow the disclosure. tom sherwood joins us with the story. >> this was a big weekend for mayor gray. he welcomed the world to the king memorial dedication. then there was the scandal story. as thousands celebrated the sing memorial sunday, mayor vincent gray challenged them. >> i employ you mr. president. stand with the people of the district of columbia. >> reporter: his dramatic appeal was overshadow by the story sunday morning on the investigation into whether brown was paid off to attack then mayor. whether brown got a $110,000 year job for the efforts.

>> there's a $150,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest in the case. a tractor trailer accident caused a messy morning commute for drivers in the suitland area. it happened just before 5:00. it lost control and slammed into the underpass. the truck was carrying a large load of wooden fence parts. diesel from the truck spilled. crews had to close lanes for hours to clean up the mess. >> what do you think about this? >> actually, there's nothing you can go about it. i read about it on the news this morning. it's one thing after another. >> is it much of an inconvenience for you? >> yeah. we didn't know what was happening. >> the truck driver is recovering from serious injuries. prince george's county hazmat team says it is not a danger to

residents. electrical problems forced a plane to land in a parking lot in virginia today. the pilot says his cessna lost power as he tried to land it in a field. the plane clipped part of a parking garage before landing. the 81-year-old pilot and his passenger got out safely. nobody on the ground was injured. virginia state police started a crackdown today trying to stop people from making their own parking spaces. police were on patrol ticketing anybody found parking outside designated parking areas. commuters were alerted to the area with message boards and flyers on the cars. people are parking where they are not supposed to in the lot. they are impeding the flow of traffic by doing so. it's become a safety concern. a bike sharing station. bike sharing programs like the

these engineers who repelled down the sides of the washington monument are at it again. this time, they are working high up at the national cathedral. elaine reyes is live over there with more. elaine? >> reporter: hi, there. we have been here all afternoon. the engineers are part of a difficult access team. they are concerned with the ornamental limestone on the front and sides of the towers. they are looking for cracks and

loose stones. they just finished scaling the washington monument. they are calling this a completely different experience. >> i kind of wish i had that job. it looks pretty enjoyable on a day like this. >> reporter: it's a sight that's rare to see. and it's stopping people on wisconsin avenue. >> i was riding my bike, i had the day off and saw guys hanging off the cathedral. i thought i would take a look. >> reporter: they are checking the towers stone-by-stone, ornament-by-ornament. they are the same crew that went down the washington monument. >> it's such a -- you know, a huge historic truckture, but it's relatively stark while you are on the side of the building. there's not a lot to look at with this. with all the ornamentation. it's more entertaining for us, if you want to say, while we are

a manassas woman accused of setting her apartment complex on fire will remain in jail. she's charged with malicious burning of an occupied building. she confessed to setting the fire while neighbors were inside the building. >> reporter: a two-alarm fire that left two dozen people without anywhere to live. this wok, a resident here, is charged with setting the blaze. >> my reaction to this, she don't have no regrets of anybody else's life. no matter what's going on in her life or whatever, deal with it on the inside. don't bring anybody else

involved. it affected a lot of families around here. >> she could have hurt one of these kids. there are a lot of kids. >> reporter: she set her unit on fire just after 7:00. there were flames shooting through the roof and heavy smoke. 11 adults and 12 children displaced. according to the documents, she set a shirt on her stove, set it on fire and placed it on a bed. flames spread from there. she went door-to-door telling people the building was on fire. she moved here from ohio less than one month ago. >> this is an act of criminal investigation. so, that's something i can't comment on until we are further into the investigation.
