11-year-old son is still under way. melissa has the latest developments. melissa? >> reporter: the hearing lasted a few minutes today in charlotte. we are not sure when he'll be leaving charlotte, he should be in montgomery county within the next few days. during monday's hearing, neither lopez nor his public defender said anything about the charges against him. he stood in shackles telling the judge he wanted to waive extraditi extradition. he looked back at friends and family after it. >> he was a friend, you know? i'm blown away by it. it's not the person that i knew. >> reporter: nbc 4 obtained the search warrant for the econolodge where he was arrested. his 24-year-old girlfriend was

behind the wheel of the suv when she crashed here on north try on street. according to police documents, she said she was driving her boyfriend's mother's car. her name was jane. it had her maryland registration and insurance information in there. there were two cell phones and 18 copies of a marriage certificate. police found a box cutter knife, a credit card belonging to jane mccain and nine 100 dollar bills. it could be 24 hours before lopez is sent north. >> he will be held in custody until the authorities in maryland make arrangements to come retrieve him. >> reporter: lopez spent time in prison before. over the years he's had a slew of addresses in charlotte. his former roommate says she hasn't heard from him since he moved out of her home three

assault. she was arrested in february on charges she punched, kicked and choked several first grade students. the trial is expected to last five days. now the occupy movement is going global. large protests are under way across europe tonight. in london, there are 10 tents set up outside st. paul's cathedr cathedral. they say the protesters have been largely peaceful. one area that remains heavily guarded is the london stock change. it's a flash point where they say the world's richest people are not paying their fair share. >> if you are in the 99% you have all the power, no matter how much money you have. >> the atmosphere was different

in rome saturday. thousands of protesters gathered near the coliseum and marched in the streets. police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. anarchists infiltrated a peaceful march. cornel west and 18 other people were arrested at a related protest yesterday. this was at the grounds of the supreme court. west is a civil rights activist, author and professor. he and the people arrested with him spent the night in jail. prosecutors declined to press charges. he blasted corporate greed, media yonership and the racist justice system. maryland lawmakers were back in annapolis. they need a new redistricting

map. they say the changes would dilute their votes. we have more on this from annapolis. >> reporter: a special session of maryland legislature is held every ten years after a census. governor martin o'malley submitted a map based on the recommendation of the commission that held statewide hearings. congresswoman donnaedwards of the fourth district feels it's unfair to add parts of -- >> there are a number of people, republicans, democrats, independents not happy about being treated as chess pieces. >> his map treats minorities like pawns. >> i think the response of that is found in the majority of

others who looked at the map. >> maryland has six democrats and two republicans. >> that's the purpose of why we are here. to go after congressman. >> can you successfully fight against that? >> we hope to. >> they began hearings on the redistricting map. montgomery and prince george's county testified in support of it. >> one of the things i have heard as i went around and talked to people, they want to make sure it's concentrated in two districts. >> if governor o'malley's map is passed by the special session, opponents say they could challenge it in court, even if it means postponing next april 3rd. governor o'malley says job creation is a top priority.

drivers involved in a deadly indy race say they were concerned about safety before the event began. it killed driver dan wheldon and injured three others. he leaves behind a wife and two

young sons in his adopted home of st. petersberg, florida. his family is devastated. >> yesterday, left us doing what he loved to do. he was a true champion and a gentleman on and off the track. >> there's also a makeshift memorial at the indianapolis speedway where he won the indy 500 this past may. in serbia, 20 children were hurt at a security demonstration. a helicopter blew billboards into the stands. they hit spectators. second and third graders, eight children ended up in the hospital. one suffered a concussion, another a broken collarbone. no one seriously hurt. no testimony in the manslaughter trial against dr. conrad murray. the judge postponed it because

lurking down in the gulf of mexico, there's an area of low pressure. what's interesting about this storm system is part of it is what bombarded central america with a disastrous flooding. there's a lot of rain here. the colorings pushing northward. it's wet tomorrow down across the southeast. south carolina, georgia, florida. jacksonville, atlantic. the storm system heads to the north. wednesday is the soggy day here. i think we could get anywhere from 3/4 to an inch and a half of rain. feeling like november by the time we get toward the end of the week. pleasant evening, mid-60s to upper 50s. tomorrow, 45 to 52. tomorrow, back up into the 70s. that's it for this week. if you want to get outside and get something done, tomorrow is the day. if you don't like the chill of

to consumers before they go over monthly limits. >> it will give them the information they need to save money on their wireless bills. >> reporter: two surveys found an average of one in five customers suffered some form of cell phone bill shock. >> they didn't know they were hitting their caps or limits on their phones. >> reporter: the pledge for a limit alert comes as the threat of government imposed mandates looms for wireless carriers. >> they would rather regulate themselves than have congress or have the fcc impose regulation. >> reporter: they pledge to have the laws in place within 12 months for two services. all of them within 18 months. there's still a learning curve for consumers. >> how much is e-mails or streaming a few minutes of video, how much is that going to eat up my data plan.

today, president obama set out on a three-day bus tour to talk about his jobs plan. he's visiting two states critical in the last election, north carolina and virginia. republicans say the tour is nothing but a campaign trip at the taxpayers expense. occupy wall street is one month old and continuing to grochlt rallies and arrests around the world. many of the largest weekend protests happened in europe. so far, $300,000 has been donated to the movement. the indy race car driver killed in an accident sunday is being remembered by fans and teammates. dan wheldon died after a 15-car pile up yesterday. he was only 33 years old.

a man being held in north carolina will be returning to montgomery county soon to face charges in the murder of his estranged wife. >> he was in court in charlotte, north carolina where he waived his right to extradition. he was charged in the stabbing death of his wife. there was a search in damascus and park in maryland. >> reporter: they searched over the weekend. they searched again today. police out looking for william mcquain, the 11-year-old boy missing now for 17 days. how do they know where to look? well kenny has an answer. he says william and his mom jane mcquain and his stepfather, curtis lopez would come to his

house to socialize and eat barbecue. he says they were all there three weeks ago, right before all of this happened. >> last time we were here cooking out. i have a fire here. we were grilling out by the picnic table. it wz last month. three to four weeks ago. >> curtis lopez? >> and jane and william were here. >> reporter: off route 270 in clarksburg. police in the fields, in the woods, near the drainage ponds. now these are not just arbitrary exercises. police say they have a reason to search but they are not broadcasting it. >> i can tell you it's not a hunch or a guess. it's based on investigative leads and information that detectives have that brought us here. >> reporter: the time line, october 12th, the boys mother, 51-year-old jane mcquain found

murdered in her german town condo. they believe she was dead for some time. october 13th, the next day, curtis lopez charged in the murder. he was arrested in charlotte, north carolina. september 30th. that's the day 11-year-old william mcquain was last seen in his germantown neighborhood. so will there be another search tomorrow? if so, where will they be tomorrow? we may not know the answers to those questions until tomorrow. i'm pat collins, news 4, montgomery county. family and friends say william mcquain had no contact with his biological father. over the weekend, relatives from that side of the family came forward and expressed their concern. >> i'm hoping and praying that we can find little william and he could -- we can come together

and find out that he has a grandmother that loves him. >> relatives of his biological father say they have not seen the boy in years, if ever. they learned of his disappearance on the news. a local man being held in aruba in the disappearance of a maryland woman will stay in jail. 50-year-old gary giordano is suspected in the death of his girlfriend. they appealed an order. he denies wrong doing and says gardner was swept out to sea while they were snorkeling. mayor vincent gray asserted his innocence as they probe deeper into pay offs in his 2010 campaign for mayor. the comments follow the disclosure of new details.

tom sherwood has the report. >> reporter: as thousands celebrated king memorial sunday, mayor vincent gray urged the president for voting rights. >> i employ you mr. president, members of congress, stand with the people of district of columbia. >> reporter: the appeal was overshadowed by the lead story on the investigation into whether brown was paid off during the 2010 campaign to attack the then mayor. whether brown got a $110,000 year job for his efforts. there was a half page graphic of major players saying the fbi had fingerprints from operatives. did you read the article? >> well, i certainly read parts of it. i read all of these things. >> reporter: have you been asked for fingerprints? >> no.

with the fbi and worn an undercover wire in the investigation. neither brooks nor his lawyer could be reached. tonight, someone inside a building confessed to starting a fire. she admits to setting her second story unit on fire at the sunny gates apartments on sunday morning. the charging documents say she set a t-shirt on fire on the stove and put the burning shirt on the bed. six units damaged. 11 adults and 12 children displaced by the fire. it cost $600,000 in damage. no word on why baits did it. coming up, a team of experts repelling and checking for earthquake damage at

pot-bellied pig named wilbur, he's got a new home. a permanent home. he's been adopted. the family who lives on a ten-acre farm in virginia say he's going by a new name. they are calling him norm. the pig's former owner says he became unable to care for him. he's a 200 pound pig. norm's new family saw him and knew they had to have him. he's very happy and they hope to find him a companion, soon. >> that might be hard to do. maybe not. >> maybe somebody else out there has an overweight badly behaved pot belly pig. >> great transition. from wilbur to sports, it's ugly. we are talking baseball. the cards and rangers in the world series. a memorable weekend for coaches in the nfl. that includes mike shanahan who

at nbc washington asking people who they wanted to be the starting quarterback. john beck won an incredible 252 to 20. the poll has only been up for a couple hours. the public wants to see the change made. shanahan says he's undecided. he's going to make an announcement for the panther's game on sunday on wednesday after practice. we are going to have to wait for a couple days. the old quarterback debate reared its ugly head after throwing four interceptions and the redskins lost to the eagles yesterday. it was not a pretty game for rex grossman. worst game as a redskin yesterday. two first halves. two more in the third quarter. it gives him an nfl nine interceptions this season. his fourth one sent him to the bench. he was replaced by beck. beck led the skins on their only touchdown drive.

it wasn't enough. the skins now 3-2 after the loss to the eagles. mike shanahan will wait to announce the starting quarterback on wednesday. >> on wednesday, a decision will be made based on who is going to start. the best interest of the organization. i have not made up my mind. i have talked to the coaches to get their opinions on the play. both these guys can play. the national football league for a long time. i know these guys got what it takes. which ever direction we go, that guy is going to get an opportunity to show us what he can do on game day. >> i believe in myself no matter if the stadium doesn't, coaching staff doesn't. you know, whatever the situation is. i believe in myself that every single play, i'm going to get it done. >> i try to have my head into the game where when they give the play to rex, i'm repeating

if he's the starting quarterback, i think he'll have a jacket on next time. all four interceptions weren't rex's fault. anyway you slice it, he has a terrible game. there are players in rex's corner. one is santana. perhaps the best receiver on the team says rex deserves another shot. >> i feel like he deserves another shot. he came back and played a hell of a game. can't just, you know what i mean -- for the florida game yesterday, it worked. that's the luxury you have when you have two good quarterbacks. beck can come in and do his thing. you can't give up on a guy because he had a bad outing. what we been doing this year, rex held it down. you can't give up on one game. yes, he threw the ball and he's

going to get blamed. it's his decision. we have to make better plays for him so he won't have to deal with this kind of stuff. >> reporter: he averages two interceptions a game. the average quarterback just over an interception per game. injuries a huge problem for the redskins moving forward. two offensive linemen going to be out for a substantial amount of time. corey out for the season. williams out with a sprain and cooley going to have surgery on a fractured finger. sounds like, it sounds like he could be out the entire season as well. mike shanahan says they will evaluate his status after surgery. perhaps the most entertaining part of the nfl week had to do with a couple of coaches. the coach for the 49ers and the coach for the detroit lions had

an interesting post game handshake. after the niners beat the lions he raced across the field, shakes his hand and gives him a smack on the back. schwartz is coming after him. apparently, he uttered an obscenity. both guys had to be restrained by players. there's a history between the two guys. schwartz said there's no way you are going to be able to win in san francisco as brand-new head coach. winning they both are, the lions and the 49ers are 5-1. another crazy coaching incident in tampa bay where drew brees an the saints took on the buccaneers. graham bowls over his head coach on the sideline. peyton goes down with a torn meniscus and fractured bone in his leg. here is the cool thing about it. he toughed it out.

virginia state police are cracking down on people who make their own parking spots at the wood bridge commuter lot. after a week of written warnings, the police, today, began issuing tickets to the drivers who park illegally at a park and ride lot off i-95 in the prince william parkway. they say parking has gotten out of control with drivers parking on the grass or along threwways. it makes a safety hazard. on top of the ticket, some cars might be towed. the same team that inspected the washington monument is repelling down another washington landmark. they are taking a look at weather quake damage to the washington cathedral. we have more. >> i think they are braver than
