today, he was arrested in a house where he was hiding. his son has also been killed. the former dictator was found and killed in sirte. steve handelsman begins the coverage. >> reporter: the cell phone video is graphic, but shaky. for hours, u.s. officials were scrambling to verify what libyan rebels claim, that moammar gadhafi is dead. a victory for president obama. he saluted the libyan people. >> you have won your revolution. now, we will be a partner as you forge a future that provides dignity, freedom and opportunity. >> reporter: libyans celebrated. many joined the rebels to overthrow the leader they lov and grew to fear and hate. they needed help and they got it from the u.s. >> we did go in and supported a rebellion against gadhafi.

it's a good thing he's gone. we ought to be careful about the lessons learned. >> reporter: one lesson is air power alone can work. in attacks ordered by president obama nato pounded gadhafi forces. it dwindled to the use of drones. italy and france kept up the attacks. gadhafi refused to give up or get out, even after the capital, tripoli fell. he was held up in the town of sirte. a convoy near sirte today. according to some reports, that is how and where gadhafi was caught and killed. arab experts say whether it makes america safer, at this point, is unknowable. i'm steve handelsman. news 4. there was cheering and celebrating in libya today.

in d.c., people were closely watching the reports that announce the death of gadhafi. john schriffen was there. >> many of the libya members i spoke with today decided not to go to work, instead be with their family members on this historic day. they compared this accomplishment to the day saddam hussein was brought down saying this is truly a miracle. libyan americans had their eyes glued to the television after news broke that former libyan leader was captured and killed. >> i didn't know whether to laugh or cry or, you know, be excited. it's just, you know, we have been waiting for this moment forever. >> at this viewing party, they came together to celebrate a day some thought they would never see in their lifetime. the end of a dictatorship that lasted 42 years.

[ gunfire ] >> reporter: the celebration was heard around the world as president obama declared victory and rebel forces in gadhafi's hometown took to the streets chanting, god is good. the excitement could be seen with kisses, hugs and smiles. everybody over there hoping to have a democracy. i have been talking to my family. freedoms and we hope to have better hospitals and better school. >> this one is my brother. he was killed by the regime. >> reporter: an area libyan-american activist has been using facebook to support the revolution in libya. it was dangerous to speak out to the government but credits the young people demanding a new way of life. >> i have to be honest, they were not starving.

on alabama avenue. tonight, family members are trying to figure out why thompson was a target. derrick ward has the story. >> reporter: this stretch of alabama avenue was the last leg of thompson's trip home. this bus stop is 10 minutes away from his home. sadly, he never made it. family and friends gathered around the dining room table going through photographs. this would have been a happy scene. they mourn a life lost. the 24-year-old shot at this bus stop just after midnight. >> i don't have any more words. i don't know who to say or do. you know? we just waiting for answers right now. >> reporter: according to police he was a passenger on a bus as it traveled along alabama avenue. there are reports he was confronted by two or three men. words exchanged. then it ended with three shots.

he died not long after at the hospital. now, these photographs are that much more precious. >> he was a good kid. he always had a smile on his face. he was respectful, loving. >> reporter: things were looking up for thompson. he was looking for work. >> he had dreams. he was a teenage father and all he wanted was to take care of his family. >> reporter: he just gotten a class a cdl license. >> i called him and talked to his mom and then talked to him and gave him the affirmation to talk to the people. they were looking for young drivers. >> reporter: instead, they were awakened to the worst possible news. police are hoping video surveillance cameras will give them information. among them, how to tell his young children, age 3 and 4 that

their father won't come home. >> his kids are very young. they just had birthdays. they love their father. >> reporter: we want to show you surveillance video from the metro bus just released. they are hoping this will lead them to suspects. i think what they have been able to get from this video are persons of interest that may have been involved in the incident. police are asking for the public's help. again, surveilness video that shows part of the incident that led to his death. police want to public's help identifying the folks seen in this video as the investigation into this tragic killing continues. >> thank you. the d.c. police are asking for help in their investigation of a sexual assault. it happened last saturday in the 900 block of perry place

northeast. a man sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl at 3:00 in the afternoon. the man was last seen driving a burgundy cadillac. if you have information you are asked to call crime solvers. two firefighters were injured while dealing with a house fire in montgomery county. it broke out after 3:00. it started in the basement and quickly spread throughout the house. homeowner says he was there when it started. >> some stuff in the basement, trying to clear out junk. i was moving a metal shelf when i tripped over something. it went into the electric panel and just exploded. i mean exploded. god, i barely had time to crawl across the floor and get out of there. >> investigators are still trying to find out what caused the fire. >> they were treated at the scene for heat exposure.

mitt romney's efforts here locally. he'll serve as part of his maryland campaign. after studying all the candidates, it's clear romney is the only candidate with the necessary experience to turn around the failing economy. today, the current governor of maryland signed a bill that approves the new congressional district lines. they had to be redrawn. maryland has eight seats in the u.s. house of representatives. they say the map reflects the population growth in the d.c. suburbs and the corridor northwest of d.c. republicans say it's drawn to favor democrats. a woman from maryland was among those honored at the white house with the nation's second highest award for civilians. president obama, today, presented 13 people with the medal. michel

stephanie has more. >> reporter: questioning of the prosecution's final witness continued for the third day. yesterday, dr. stephen shafer pulled no punches laying out what he called 17 egregious violations. shafer called them unethical and one illegal. >> the lack of medical records, it's such a profound violation. it's the realtime records, it is the -- it's everything. >> reporter: some of the most disturbing violations included using propofol as a sleep aid and administering it. at one point, he was disturbed by the fact dr. murray waited to call 911. >> that is so egregious that i actually find it difficult to even comprehend. you could have a patient who has

the estranged husband is still behind bars. at pat collins reports, new details emerged about the final hours of the mother and son's lives. >> reporter: it appears the 11-year-old may have never known about his mother's murder. the body of william found in this wooded area on clarksburg road. sources tell news 4 the jury is so severe it took longer than expected to perform the autopsy. the suspect in both murder cases, curtis lopez, jane mcquain's estranged husband, william's stepfather. the order of death, sources tell police they are looking into that scenario. william was not at home when his mother was murdered. murdered in the bedroom of her condo sometime on the night of september 30th. the next day, october 1st, curtis lopez picks up william

and takes him to his mother's storage locker in german town. there, they say security cameras took pictures of william. he appeared to be in a playful mood roller blading around the parking lot. that was in the morning. there's more video from that afternoon. william and lopez seen by security cameras at this gas station on clarksburg road. again, they say william acting like a normal 11-year-old, not distre distressed, anxious or threatened. a short time later, they believe lopez took him to the woods and left him today. this is the jail they are going to bring lopez to when they bring him back from north carolina. the exact time of the move, they are keeping that secret. i'm pat collins, news 4,

short time ago. 22-year-old was shot and killed riding the bus around midnight in southeast washington. he was shot after a confrontation and later died at the hospital. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at a house in montgomery county that broke out in cabin john area. the homeowner says he was clearing out his basement when he tripped and hit a metal panel that exploded. a fairfax man registered as a sex offender in virginia is in trouble with the law, again. >> he is accused of using facebook to lure a young girl into his house. julie carey has the exclusive report. >> reporter: he's 20 years old and already he had a record that landed him on virginia's sex offender registry. now, he's accused of using facebook to find his latest

victim, a 13-year-old girl. he has been arrested for some kind of sexual activity. search warrants say the latest occurred a few weeks ago, inside his apartment at this building. the court documents say he was free from jail a few months. he began communicating with a 13-year-old on facebook where he was using an alias. on september 21st, he convinced the team to come to this apartment where he lived with his parents. he told her to disrobe and took photos. he video taped her performing a sex act. he was arrested, charged with knowledge of a minor. he was also arrested back in april and convicted of sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. they question whether he should have been freed from jail at all. rose didn't want her face shown.

she encountered him last november when she broke up a sexual encounter between him and a 13-year-old girl taking place in an office complex bathroom. >> i kept telling him to get away and wait for the police. i was able to hold him for five minutes. after that, he pished me and escaped. >> he was convicted of assault for pushing her to ground that day. he got 20 years in jail. >> i was surprised. make sure you keep this guy off the streets. soon enough, he's out. i learn he did another offense. so, i was sad that the law protects him more than the victim. >> reporter: he's being held in a detention center without bond. julie carey, news 4. >> he's due in court next week.

a teacher accused of choking students took the witness stand to defense herself. she was suspended from her first grade teaching john in january. parents and students claim she choked, pinched and scratched children. the kids sometimes responded angry if she disciplined them. she denied choking anyone. this could go to the jury tomorrow. an anonymous tip unveiled a case of animal hoarding. 82 cats removed from this home yesterday. it's in maryland. the conditions inside the house were so bad they had to wear hazmat gear to go inside. animals are being cared for at the animal control center. many are thin and suffering. officers will decide whether to

coast-to-coast and seek donations to restore this national cathedral. >> reporter: tom sherwood, news 4, washington. >> the mayor is also asking for $7 million in federal funds to repair district government buildings that were damaged by the earthquake. prince george's county high school got a boost from a generous donation. they gave more than 40 computers to a high school. the donation is part of a government program called computers for learning. it encourages agencies to give equipment to schools. there was a similar donation at d.c.s kramer middle school in march. that school's literacy rate went up 25%. coming up, something of a miracle. the birth of a planet. big changes could be made.

thinking about stricter laws that prevent people from owning wild animals. they are doing that after a man deliberately released more than 50 wild animals in ohio before he committed suicide. most of those animals were shot by sheriff's deputies. we have a report coming up. this report does have graphic photos. >> it was a war zone. >> with the threat of roaming dangerous animals gone and the neighborhood out of lockdown, sam can talk about his close encounters. >> it appeared to be a bear. i turned and around 30 feet on the other side of the wire was a big, large, african lion. they were asking what we saw. he dropped his notebook and went off and killed three down here. >> reporter: the shooting
