a few moments of hope and joy today in turkey when several people, including a toddler, were found alive under the rubble of sunday's strong earthquake. good morning and welcome to "news4 midday. kwoots i'm eun yang in for barbara harrison. we will have much more to deadly earthquake in turkey in just a few moments. we begin with breaking news out of rockville, maryland. police are on the scene of an appear enmurder will be sue slide. it happened at the national lutheran nursing home in the 9700 block of veers drive. police received a call for an electrocution at the home around

9:45 this morning and found two people unconscious. the victims were later pronounced dead. a crew is on the way and we will bring you more later in the newscast. the death toll is rising this morning in turkey as rescue teams dig through the rubble searching for survivors after a massive earthquake there. already 270 people are confirmed dead. but hundreds of rescue workers are pouring into the eastern cities to the hardest hit by the 7.2 magnitude quake hoping to find anyone still live. nbc's michelle fran accident has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the frantic search for rescue survivors intensified in southeast turkey. and the dramatic rescue in hard-hit town as a toddler is pulled from the rubble. amateur video shows the terrifying moments when the major quake hint sunday. so far there are at least 200 deaths. and more than a thousand injured. hundreds are still unaccounted

for. many believed to be still pinned beneath the rubble. >>. >> translator: the situation is really bad. many of our friends and relatives are still trapped under the rubble. we have not heard from any of them. >> reporter: an ancient city of 1 million, the vacant has already claimed the lives of 100 people and flattened dozens of buildings and including a university dormitory. reports of victims calling for help were heard overnight. but rescue efforts were hampered by darkness and freezing temperatures. using what equipment they had and digging with bare hands, workers moved chunks of concrete to reach victims including this scared 10-year-old boy. >> along with the desperate search for victims, thousands are seeking shelter. aide workers set up 4,000 tents in a nearby stadium and food and blankets and other aid is pouring in from around the world. >> that was nbc's michelle

franzen reporting. the last time a major earthquake hit turkey was in wr9. that's when two quakes hit the northwest region of the country, killing 20,000 people. right now jury selection is under way for the trial of brittney norwood. she accused of killing her co-worker murray at the lululemon store in bethesda in march. megan mcgrath is live outside the courtroom with more. >> reporter: good morning. brittney entered the courtroom wearing a gray cardigan sweater and blouse and hair pulled tightly back. she has been sitting quietly next to her attorneys as the proceedings go on here. the judge brought in the first 150 prospective jurors into the courtroom. they were sworn in and are being questioned right now about what they know about this case. if need be, the judge can also draw on a pool of another 150 people if necessary. that will happen later on this afternoon. this jury selection is expected to take a while. it is expected to last all day today and go into at least part

of tuesday. at the courthouse in rockville, p 3 00 potential jurors are being questioned by the attorneys. what do they know about the case? do they have any beliefs or opinions that would prevent them from being open and unbiased? jury selection could take a day and a half. brittney norwood is accused of killing her lululemon co-worker murray last march. she was found bound and cut inside the store near murray's it body and told police two masked men were responsible and sexually assaulted them and then killed murray. but police say norwood's story just didn't hold up. prosecutors say that norwood's injuries were self-inflicted. she tried to pass herself off as a victim when, in fact, she was the murderer. the judge has told the prospective jurors that this trial could last anywhere from 8 to 10 days if convicted norwood could face life in prison without parole.

eun, back to you. >> megan mcgrath in rockville. thank you. now to a traffic alert in northern virginia for the next two weeks, beltway drivers can no longer get on the outer loop from gallows road northbound. vdot closed the ram in annandale early this morning. it is part of the hotlanes project. crews are taking out the old ram and replacing it with the new one. detour signs are posted. turning to the weather a chilly start to the day. i think it will be a nice one. met meet tom kierein joins us for first forecast. tom, good morning. >> yes, still a bit after chill in the air. we are rapidly warming up. now we are getting more sun than we had earlier. right now temperatures around the region have climbed into the 50s and to near 60 in washington and by the bay in southern maryland, already in the low 60s there as well as parts of the eastern shore. farther to our west, though, where there is some more cloudiness around the blue ridge, shenandoah valley, their temperatures there are in the low to mid 50s now. over the last 12 hours, we had these clouds cruising through from the southwest heading

jammed from scott street to sycamore street bumper to bumper. a very slow commute. let's check out i-95 in virginia, fairfax county parkway. not seeing any problems for you as you make your way towards 395, you are clear. this is a view at king street, i can tell you you are clear from edsall all the way to the 14th street bridge. eun, back to you. >> thanks so much. 11:07. d.c. police are trying to figure out if the same person is responsible for a string of weekend robberies. each happened sunday and all in northwest washington. here is news4's tracee wilkins with more. >> reporter: d.c. police are investigating a string of robberies that all happened yesterday afternoon. some cases, personal property like cell phones and ipads were snapped. other cases, cash. here in the 700 block of fairmont northwest, all of that was taken and more. police responded to the 700 block of fairmont street in northwest yesterday for an armed burglary.

police say the burglar entered through an unlocked front door and robbed a house full of people in town for the howard university homecoming. robbed of money, cell phones, ipad and college i.d.s. the us is effect took off on a bike. that happened around 2:40 p.m. it was one of a number of robberies in upper northwest. ten minutes earlier another set of robbers, three men on a bike snatched someone's iphone 4 and kept riding in the 1300 block of 14th street northwest. the 1900 block of m street in northwest, a crew of construction workers who were renovating a build wrestling reportedly robbed for cash by three masked gunmen. that happened just before 1:00 p.m. then in the 1,200 block of crittenden and northwest another robbery was reported. no one was injured in any of the robberies. police say the cluster of robberies was unusual and shouldn't be considered some kind of a new crime trend.

police have no reason to believe that all of these incidents are connected. they are asking anyone with information to give them a call. northwest, tracee wilkins, news4. when kids in sponsz spotsylvania get out of school today they are likely to see more police around the area. it is in response to an attempted abduction a few days ago. the police say this happened friday afternoon. a 9-year-old girl got off the school bus when a man approached her and chased her past a couple of houses. when she got close to her home the suspect quickly turned around and ran off. another rough week for the burgundy and gold. a new quarterback could not help washington's defense which gave up more than 400 yards in a loss to carolina. the skins held the panthers to just feel goals early but carolina exploded in the third quarter. leading by as many as 13 points. the redskins clawed their way back to within ten but late in the game john beck gets intercepted and right there. ouch. and ending any possibility of a

they call the village at rockville. it is a lutheran retirement community where about 10:00 this morning, there was a call for police to come to investigate an apparent murder/suicide. we are told that police are looking at a possibility this murder/suicide may involve a married couple who lives in the main building here. there are two living situations here at this place. some in these cottages that you see over here and then there's a main building. we are told that this incident occurred in the main building here at this lutheran home that involved a married couple and we are told they are looking into the possibility of two things here. the possibility of an electrocution, a possibility some sort of firearm was used. again, investigators are on the scene of what appears to be an appearent murder-suicide at thi lutheran community. it is called the village at rockville. it happened shortly before 10:00

this morning. and the investigators inside the building. we hope to have more details, more information, for you as the day goes on. eun, back to you. >> pat collins live in rockville. thanks so much, pat. today president obama is heading west. the president is on his way to nevada to push his $447 billion jobs bill. he will introduce new initiatives including a change in mortgage rules. another major plan is a student loan initiative that he will unveil wednesday in denver. neither of these moves requires congressional approval so they could be put into place rather quickly. vice president joe biden may be considering a presidential run in 2016. in an interview this weekend, mr. biden said that he is leaving the door open. he run unsuccessfully for the presidency twice and vice president says for now, though, he is focusing on getting president obama re-elected in

2012. libya's interim leader says he ordered an investigation into street death of moammar gadhafi. the move is in response to strong international pressure, including from the u.s. there are conflicting reports on how he died. first it was said gadhafi was caught in cross fire and then it was reported he was ambushed in an ambulance. reports say he zied fr died fro bullet to the head. thousands celebrated in day of liberation after living under gadhafi's rheaume. the transitional council is calling for islamist type of government for libya. a developing story out of syria. the u.s. ambassador to that country is now back in washington after skaurt concerns. the state department said there was a number of credible threats against ambassador robert ford

he defended pastful protests and criticized a government crackdown that killed nearly 3,000 people. anti-government protesters are demanding the country's president be removed from office. today a new memorial opens in arlington national cemetery. the memorial honors the 14 jewish chaplains that died during active military service. it will sit next to memorials for protestant and catholic chaplains. the memorial received backing from a joint congressional resolution and this year is the 150th anniversary of rabbi serving in the u.s. armed forces. congresswoman gabrielle giffords is in north carolina for next two weeks getting intensive therapy. she is recovering from a brain injury suffered when she was shot outside of political event in tucson in january. giffords will stay in asheville, north carolina, true november 4 for treatment. meanwhile her office has not said if the arizona congresswoman has decided to run for re-election. right now the sick new hampshire woman rescued from the south pole to new zealand is on

her way back to the u.s. 137. she will economic in at johns hopkins in baltimore for observation. back in august she began experiencing vision, language and memory problems while working at the national science foundation south pole research station. doctors say she had a stroke and should make a full recovery with proper treatment. tom kierein is here with the beautiful fall day in store for us. weigh had gorgeous weekend weather. coming for now, tom. >> perfect autumn weather. sweater weather. you step out and smell the aroma. dry leaves in the air. the leaves are turning more colorful now, too. here is the latest foliage report. we do have peak color, dark orange zone there, western maryland. highlands of west virginia. and some trees are near peak in the shenandoah valley right now as well. as well as along skyline drive. farther east, still about, oh, 40, 50% color showing up. individual trees, though, locally have some beautiful

color. here is a live picture from our sky watcher camera. you can see a few trees there. some of the red maples are in peak color. these are trees in the american university park neighborhood of northwest washington. way off in the distance sort of a bit of a haze in the air. we are looking towards southern montgomery county and on the left is southern loudoun county. we do have some clouds cruising over us right now. temperatures are in the mid and upper 50s. most areas. southern maryland around the bay. eastern shore and few spots there hit the low 60s. and it is cool throughout much of western maryland and panhandle of west virginia, shenandoah valley, only in the mid 50s there. and prince george's county, near 60 now. we had these clouds cruzzing in southwest to northeast. ahead of a front that's just now coming out of the ohio valley. that will be sweeping our way coming in from the west. sweeping east as we get into the afternoon hours. that front does come in and may trigger isolated shower later this afternoon. as we go forward this is the

futurecast. future weather here showing few of these areas in green, these are zones potential passing showers. here is the time by 5:30, 6:00 we could have those coming through as well as out in the mountains. then after that we should clear out this evening. and we will have another chilly start tomorrow morning. temperatures this morning in many areas were down into the low 40s and we may have that repeated again tomorrow morning. starting off tuesday. for the rest of the monday, we will have these high clouds in and out and also a very small chance of a passing shower coming through. there may be a greater chance out of the mountains. temperatures should climb from the mid 60s into the upper 60s by mid afternoon. rapid warmup from where we are now. then any showers around this evening should be dissipating by mid evening. and we will have our sky beginning to clear out after midnight. before then, just a few clouds around after the showers end. we will be in the low 60s early evening around sunset which today is at 6:18. it will be down in the mid 50s by midnight. by the way, our sunset is going

the 7.2 magnitude quake struck sunday. rescue teams pulled several survivors from the rubble this morning including a toddler. they are optimistic they will find more survivors. jury selection is going on now for the lululemon murder trial. pretty any norwood is accused of killing her co-worker in march at the clothing store. norwood pled not guilty and her defense team says they are still open to a plea bargain. it has been exactly three weeks since 11-month-old lisa irwin went missing from her kansas city home. nbc's peter alexander was granted access inside the home where lease's parents say they have nothing to hide. ♪ amazing grace >> sunday night baby lease's parents deborah bradley and irwin returned to the home where they say their daughter disappeared for a candlelight vigil. neither deborah nor jeremy said a word but were both in tears as

jeremy's father, lisa's grandfather, offered an emotional prayer. >> please keep her safe and bring her home to us as soon as possible. >> reporter: after the vigil the family invited nbc news inside the home. this is baby lisa's bedroom you heard so much about. one of the first things you notice is the spot here on the light switch where police were trying to find fingerprints. this way you can see the small frames, head and footprint from the dailies a was born. her clothes still hanging in the closet. scooby doo onesie sitting on the rack. this is the crib lisa was sleeping in. they believe this is where she was taken from that tonight and the ominous reminder of what they say happened here. the graphite from the fingerprinting process by police. this is the window where deborah and jeremy suspect an abductor may have come inside the home and athe screen was pushed in like this. this is a family room or a computer room. if it was an abduction they would have had to come through this room and then into the kitchen. come with me quickly and i will

show you. this here on the counter is exactly where the family says that the three cell phones were missing. deborah and jeremy believe the abductor would have come into this hallway passing by the room where lisa's brother was asleep. one of them coming into her bedroom from the crib, walking down this hallway and come with me. then there would have come this direction with the baby in their arms to the front door jeremy found unlocked that morning at 3:45 a.m. and where you can see police tried to find fingerprints. this weekend this newly filed police affidavit is revealing dramatic new findings in this baffling three week old mystery. according to the affidavit, last week an fbi cadaver dog smelled the scent after human corpse somewhere here on the floor and right near the bed. human decomposition usually starts within four minutes after biological death. it is going to be within minutes that a dog should be able to find that scent if it actually existed. >> reporter: according on the affidavit, deborah told investigators that she didn't initially look for lisa behind

the house because she was afraid of what she might find. last week investigators spent nearly 17 hours executing a search warrant inside the home. the new core documents also detail exactly what detectives collected. a comforter, disney character shirt, and a glow worm toy as well as rolls of tape and a tape dispenser. left behind inside the kitchen, this empty box of wine deborah admits she drank enough to get drink on the night she says her daughter vanished. deborah was seen buying the box of wine on surveillance video hours before she says she put lisa to bed. meanwhile, police are also reviewed this new surveillance video taken from a gas station less an mile away from the irwin home at 2:00 a.m. the night lisa vanished. it shows the blurry image of a person walking out of a wooded area. at least three witnesses, including this neighbor who lives only doors away, say they have spoken to investigators about a suspicious man they saw in the area that night.

>> what exactly did you see that night. >> a gentleman walking up the street, 12:15, carrying a baby. >> reporter: a baby in his arms? >> baby in his arms. >> reporter: was the baby wearing anything? >> no. from what we saw the baby was wearing a diaper, it looked like, it appeared. >> reporter: what do you think? >> it was odd. >> that was peter alexander reporting. kansas city police say that despite the eyewitness account they have no suspects and no strong leads now. they did, however, say they are not ruling out anything when it comes to finding lisa. defense lawyers for the doctor charged with michael jackson's death will begin calling witnesses today. dr. murray's lawyers are expected to blame the singer for his own death. defense lawyers expect to call about 15 witnesses including three medical experts and a police officer and randy phillips, head of aeg live. murray's lawyers have argued jackson was pressured by phillips. his company was promoting the

concert in london to show a healthy and show up on time for rehearsals or the tour may be canceled. indy car racers held a memorial service in indianapolis to remember and honor one of their own. thousands of racing fans came out for a public memorial service yesterday for dan wheldon. wheldon died in a crash last weekend during a race in las vegas. his teammates spoke at the memorial saying they should remember the 33 happiness wheldon left them. police are on the scene of an au pair enmurder/suicide. it happened at that time national lutheran home in the 9700 block of veirs drive. pat cole since live on the scene now with more on this story. pat, what have you learned? it looks like pat collins is there on the scene as police or nursing home there gives more

details about what happened exactly. all we know at this point police say they received a call for an electrocution at that nursing home in rockville, maryland. apparently police found two people dead there. again, it appears that the nursing facility and police are giving pat a statement. we will have more on this later on news4 midday and "news4 at 4:00" this afternoon. the hunt on for a deadly shark that killed a texas man off the coast of australia over the weekend. 32-year-old george waynewright of houston was driving near perth when attacked. his friends tried to save him but the injuries were too severe and a surfer was killed in september and a swimmer was attacked two weeks ago. australian authorities have now issued a catch-to-kill order for all great white sharks. some are unhappy about the move because great whites are an endangered species. let's check again once again with tom kierein for the latest on our forecast. hope we are having a nice day, tom. >> yeah. it is beginning to warm up now. still a bit of a chill in the

downtown bethesda may get difficult in the near future. it is already tough. according to t"the washington post" two projects are expected to start in january. two build rings going up on wood mont and bethesda avenues complete with retail and residential space. construction will eliminate about 300 metered parking spaces for nearly two years. it has been nearly threw months since a tragic crash claimed the life of a popular high school student. this weekend a community benefit helped raise money. darcy spencer was there and spoke to one of the survivors of the crash. >> reporter: at the volunteer fire company fairgrounds a concert was held to raise money for funeral expenses for 16-year-old jacqueline who died in a car crash in july. the money will also help with medical expenses for sawyer smith who was critically injured in the crash. he attended the fund-raiser and thanked everyone for their support. >> everyone pray for me and

everything, it really helped. allr all of the support of friends and family. >> reporter: both were students at walkersville high school. the 17-year-old driver lost control of her car and hit a road. police said the driver inexperience may have been a factor in the crash. jacqueline was popular student and athlete. >> the students are doing a lot better. coming together with your friends helps a lot. having events like this to bring everyone together, like raise awareness of what happened and collecting money to donate back to the familiar sleaze a good thing. >> reporter: organizers say $10,000 have been raised for the families through various events and charities so far. their hope for the concert to raise money and to help heal a community devastate by the loss of a promising young life. >> everything has been donated timewise or products. it is great to be a part of this community. see everybody come out for it. >> this event mensa lot to me

wife and -- wife and husband and we are investigating it as an apparent homicide/suicide. >> reporter: officials say the wife was actually here at the -- living at the home getting treatment here and the husband came to see her. he was not a resident of the home. came to see her this morning when it happen. >> that's correct. preliminary investigation is that the wife is a patient here. the husband came to visitor and that's when the homicide/suicide occurred. >> reporter: there were reports that there may be some sort of electrocution involved here but really it is are a gun -- gun crime, is it not? >> correct. we received a call at 9:54 that was for an electrocution. at this point between don't know what that call was. it could have been a misunderstanding or miscommunication. then we did receive a call at 10:00 a.m. for a specific shooting. >> reporter: no one else was hurt. >> no. two people decided. husband and wife. >> reporter: relatives of the couple have been notified. >> yes. that's what this home really wants people to know. the family has been notified. if have you loved ones here, the family of these two victims have been notified. >> reporter: the residents here,

it is a halloween light show spectacular. this is in riverside, california. the homeowner decorated the outside of the house with four singing pumpkin faces, tombstones, hand carved pumpkins. this isn't the first time the owner made his house into a light show. it certainly won't be his last. he has done it at least eight times and plans on having a new show in place for christmas. can you imagine the electricity bill? >> or trying the sleep at night? >> that's right. i know. i will have that song in my head all day now. that does it for us. thanks for joining us.
