student who was killed in a suspected robbery. he was 24 years old. they found his body outside an apartment building yesterday morning in mt. rannier, maryland just over the d.c. line in prince george's county. somebody shot him. he did not have a wallet or id on him when they found him. he was a former marine and freshman music major at howard university. they are offering grief counseling and a memorial service. now to the lululemon memorial trial. britney norwood attacked and killed her co-worker inside the bethesda store. her attorney said it wasn't premeditated. this trial is expected to last eight to ten days. chris gordon joins us from rockville with today's developments. chris? >> reporter: the jury heard from

five witnesses so far beginning with the lululemon store manager who said she found the front door unlocked on the morning of march 12th and went inside to find the store in disarray. she thought it had been vandalized. she found a body laying face down. two police officers first on the scene who confirmed there was a dead body inside the store and finally from a paramedic who treated britney norwood as a victim because no one knew she was the attacker. she admits killing jana murray. her lawyer asked the jury not to find her guilty of first degree murder. there was a horrific fight. jana was killed by britney. there was no premeditation. britney lost it. she lost control. she grabbed stuff within reach. unfortunately caused the death of jana murray.

wood explained she didn't try to manipulate police with lies, she got involved in a nightmarish situation. veteran defense lawyer who is not involved in the trial says norwood's state of mind is important. >> to try and show that her acts were intentional even while she is still alive. >> her family came here from houston, texas wearing lapel buttons with her picture. norwood uses a bar on her head along with a hammer and knife. she was found in a pool of blood on the floor in the back hallway, trying to get away from her killer. there was a set of bloody footprints from sneakers in the store. norwood wore them, then washed the blood off them. inflikted injuries on herself and concocted a lie that there

were two masked intruders. the facts were supplied by norwood to distract police away from where the blame belongs, on her. britney norwood sat motionless staring ahead showing no emotion. she suffered 107 defensive wounds, the most the state's medical examiner has ever seen. wounds inflicted by multiple weapons. now the jury in this case is composed of six men and six women. there's one black man, one black woman and an asian woman. there's five alternates. they will decide, the 12 jurors, whether or not britney norwood is guilty of first degree premeditated murder. back to you in the studio. >> chris gordon, thank you. a look at the weather now, rain out there today. we are told more to come, doug, is that right? >> potentially, a lot more to come. as you mentioned from bad to worse, for sure.

body. i can't remember a time so many members were under investigation or suspicion. >> reporter: most recall a time there were so many pieces of legislation addressing an issue, ethics. there are ten bills in front of the council. >> this council may not know how to deal with this issue. >> reporter: there are several approaches embodied in this package. councilmembers outside employment. one proposal floated that would eliminate them. money that typically and ideally goes to citizens in time of dire need. clarify the rules but don't do away with the fund. >> for an official who breaks the rules they should be responsible and fined. >> reporter: the one theme that was consistent, they all need teeth. >> if you are found guilty of failing to disclose things in your statement, you have to give up your seat on the council or resign as mayor.

more than 900 volunteers turned out to search for the child. he disappeared on sunday. he was with his family in the battlefield park in hanover park. volunteers searched the 22-mile wooded area where there is a river. they left survivor supplies out for the boy. so far, they have gone untouched. >> we consulted people that have been through this before. based on the information we have, we are looking to help him and give him the aid that he needs. we think he's in jeopardy and needs help. >> authorities still believe he is alive. they continue to treat it as a rescue mission. they will resume the search with volunteers tomorrow morning. emotional testimony in the manslaughter trial of dr. conrad murray. several former patients took the

addictions expert. they could wrap up as early as tomorrow. lawyers for john edwards, once a presidential candidate asked the judge in north carolina today to drop charges against him. edwards is accused of using $1 million in campaign donations to cover up an extramarital affair during the 2008 presidential race. his lawyer says the case is politically motivated. the prosecutor in the case is a republican running for office in north carolina. edwards pleaded not guilty to the six felony and misdemeanor charges. doug is here with the story on our weather. sunshine out there this morning but we took a turn for the worst early on, didn't we? >> then the rain came through. it lasted several hours. it caught some people by surprise. we told you you needed the umbrellas and you will need them tomorrow.

that's for sure. you may need something else, though, over the next couple days. i'll tell you what that may be in a second. today, we saw a high temperature of 68 degrees before the rain moved through. it was nice early. the clouds moved through, so did the rain. at the airport, officially only .01 inch. some areas saw a tenth of an inch to quarter of an inch. six out of the last eight wednesdays have had rain. a lot of soccer coaches are saying are we ever going to get a wednesday practice in. tonight you may have gotten it in but the fields may have been wet. there's more rain to come and quickly. 62 degrees out there with partly to mostly cloudy skies. winds out of the south at 5 miles per hour. 57 in frederick. a cool 55 in gaithersburg. down to the south, much warmer. fredericksburg coming in at 70 degrees. there's mild air out there.

doppler radar now showing things are all clear, at least for now. look back to the west. when i say back to the west, i'm talking 150 miles or so. look at all the rain right now forming and coming into west virginia. this is on a beeline across the area. it's going to move along 66 this evening and make its way into our area. there's more rain as you move back to st. louis and farther back, another storm system that's going to follow this train. that one, much colder air and snow toward denver. look at this video that we have from the denver area. this is around golden earlier. that area to the west of denver picked up ten inches of slow. three to six inches. some of the mountains in the front range picked up 12 to 18 inches of snow. this is normal in denver. they get normally at least one snowstorm in the month of october. now, as far as our weather is concerned, not going to be snow

hope is fading for the 100 still missing after this weekend's devastating earthquake in turkey. the death toll is nearing 500. there are now concerns about a lack of aid for survivors in the disaster zone. >> reporter: good evening. we are at a shelter where tents have been set up for the many people left homeless from the earthquake or too scared to return because of the aftershocks. the tents are not enough to meet the demands. all day long, people are waiting for new arrivals of the tents and certainly, they are hoping to meet those demands. we are freezing nights here. this is probably one of the coldest yet as hundreds of people are missing as rescue atemps continue. today, more rescues. some hope of other that is might be found. at least five people were rescued today.

that's on top of yesterday's miral louse recovery of a baby, mother and grandmother. they were sent for medical care. they are said to be doing very well. the needs now and the focus is going back to the many hundreds of people who are awaiting for that aid to arrive. international help is also stepping up. prefabricated homes are being sent from israel as people in this region get ready to prepare for snow. michelle franzen, nbc news. >> seismologists say there have been more than 500 aftershocks in turkey since the original quake on sunday. customers at a local mcdonalds got quite the square when a car came crashing through a restaurant. this is what it looked like in maryland at 8:30 this morning. police say the driver lost control of her vehicle and drove about two feet into the mcdonald's playground area.

fortunately, there was no one there at the time. that driver is being treated for minor injuries. metro is warning of minor delays this evening as their workers continue to try to fix problems that led to a power outage at several stations today. power substations near the deanwood and stadium army stations now functioning. the problems had an impact on riders on the blue and orange lines this morning. there were red line delays because a passenger became ill. all this comes after escalators broke down at thee etet eteth b station last night. >> coming up after the break, police clash with protesters in oakland. the occupy movement shows no sign of letting up.

president obama, today, announced changes in the federal student loan program. effective next year, the maximum students are required to pay back per year is capped at 10% of their income. the cap is currently at 15%. borrowers consolidate their government loans and government backed private loans to pay a lower interest rate. republicans are critical of the plan saying it will add to the student's debt and add more red tape. mourning a student who was shot to death yesterday. police think the 24-year-old may have been murdered in a botched robbery. no clear motive is determined

trailer yesterday. a driver called police after seeing a man jump off the woodrow wilson bridge and land on a truck. police caught up with the truck 11 miles away. the victim is 38-year-old of gaithersburg. his body was found on top of the canvas covered trailer hauling waste products. they ruled the death a suicide. police in the district are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man in northwest d.c. it happened on clay street just before noon today. police responded to the call near marvin gay park. it'shere they found him. somebody shot him several times. he was taken to a hospital where he later died. anyone with information is asked to call the d.c. police. a judge ruled an accused serial stabber is competent enough to stand trial. 55-year-old is charged with attempted murder for stabbing a

woman near a target store earlier this month. she's being held without bond until her next court date on november 8th. she spent time in a meantal hospital after stabbing two people back in 2005. in that case, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity. a presidential hopeful is courting voters in this area. mitt romney dropped in on volunteers at a phone bank at the gop headquarters today. romney's visit is fueling speculation about the role virginia's governor will play in the elections next year. >> good to see you. thank you. >> reporter: gop presidential hopeful, mitt romney taking time off to help out with the local legislative races. he's the second candidate to visit in part to set the stage

police use tear gas to clear the crowds from city hall. at least 100 people arrested. oakland's occupy wall street movement is calling on protesters to reclaim the plaza. in atlanta, police moved in and arrested 50 occupy protesters camping out in a city park there. authorities in both cities said the camp sites were creating a hazard. pushing for same-sex marriage in maryland got help from a native. >> gay and lesbian couples believe in commitment, family and love. if you don't believe me, did you happen to notice, all that's being asked for is the right to be married. commitment, family and love. >> the oscar winner monique used her star power to legalize gay marriage. she's known for her award

it would fund billions of dollars of transportation projects across the state. transit, maintenance and improvements. some maryland residents aren't opposed to it. >> gas is going to be high anyway. if it's going to help the schools, it's my opinion, it helps the roads and state, we should do it. >> it would hurt us more than it has in the past. especially with the economy. >> reporter: mario owns the liberty gas station on connecticut avenue. just two miles from the district line. he'll face stiff competition if it passes. >> we are all taxpayers. whether we are a business or a, just a household, you are still paying taxes. you know? and it hurts. >> i have slightly mixed feelings about it. i really am in favor of supporting the transportation programs that need funding, but it seems like a high amount. >> reporter: a higher gas tax isn't the only thing being

more showers in the afternoon. not a total wash out. high temperature around 65 degrees, if we can make it that high. friday, cooler. down to 54 degrees. a low of 48 in the district. many areas will be into the low to mid-30s friday morning. a very cold start. a freeze watch in effect for areas of northern maryland and west virginia. saturday, everybody is on the cold side. i'm watching a storm system, a coastal storm. if it comes together, it could give us chilly rain saturday, temperatures around 46. maybe snow in the western suburbs. well to the west of washington, d.c. this is a storm system we will continue to watch. monday, temperatures 58 degrees. sunday, the storm system is going to be a quick mover and get out of the region. >> halloween looks okay. >> cool, but fun for the kids. >> thanks, doug. you know the old saying you want to make god laugh, tell him you have a plan.

check this out. gus and jennifer live in arizona. they have plans. they got married. it was an outdoor ceremony. they planned it down to the last detail. there was nothing they could do about the weather. a dust storm kicked up. in a matter of moments, the bride and groom and pastor were covered in sand. >> whoa! >> when it was time to exchange vows, they could hardly see each other. they talked about it this morning on the "today" show. >> it was eventful. it happened but we got married. i guess all that matters is we are married. it is what it is. >> like it is what it is. there's no way -- you have to like them for this. there is no way any of their kids is going to be named sandy. they are not going to stand for that. we celebrate them for that and carrying on.
