good afternoon, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we are under a freeze watch. ready or not, we are ready to see the first snow flakes of the season. >> doug kammerer joins us live from the storm center. you have our attention, doug. >> that's the thing. it's going to grab a lot of people's attention when you talk snow in october. don't worry about the snow, it's not going to be a big problem. flakes in a couple areas. the cold and rain is going to be the story on saturday. we are in for nasty weather. live doppler radar is not showing too much in the way of rain across the area. a few more in southern maryland. we have a frontal boundary that is draped across our area. showers in the north to pennsylvania and the west into kentucky. we have rain to go. shower variety throughout the rest of the evening hours from

time-to-time. not too bad out there. the temperatures, look at this, 63 right now with winds south-southwest at 5 miles per hour. 52 in hagerstown. 75 in fredericksburg. that's the cold front that will make its way down here. cool air, if not cold air behind it. 55 at 9:00 tonight. waking up to temperatures in the low 40s. that's in the district. we have a freeze watch for parts of the area where it could get to the freezing mark. plus, who has the best chances to see snow this weekend. pat? >> thanks, doug. lawyers for a university of virginia student from chevy chase, maryland accused of killing his college girlfriend are awaiting a decision on whether the medical records are pertinent in the case. why his defense is trying to show that yardley love.

>> reporter: they were in court wednesday for a second time trying to gain access to love's medical records. he's accused of killing his on again off again girlfriend. she was on the women's lacrosse team. he admitted he shook love and her head repeatedly hit the wall the night she died. the medical examiner said she died of blunt force to the head after she was attacked in her apartment. in court, the defense argued love died from an irregular heart beat. many close-nit college town view this as blaming the victim. >> i think it's transparent. the fact they can't rest on anything more substantial. >> i think it's disrespectful of

her memory, personally. >> this was not his first brush with the law. in 2008 public swearing and intoxication and resisting arrest. now, his lawyers have no choice but to seek other answers as to how love may have died. >> i think the defense is looking at a murder charge. a felony murder and intentional murder. the defense must do the best they can for their client. if there's any question about the cause of death, they must pursue it. >> love's family had no comment wednesday. in a statement released to nbc news in april, the family said we have faith in the justice system and trust that the truth will prevail. volunteers in hanover. the 8-year-old disappeared on sunday.

1200 volunteers showed up today to help find robert. 300 more had to be turned away. searchers left behind glow sticks to lead him to food, blankets and water in case he's frightened. they are focusing on a 22 mile square area. the sports junkies on 106.7 the fan got an unexpected wake up call this morning. a honda civic came flying into the call screening room after 7:00 this morning. one of the producers jusz left the room seconds before. the noise from the crash was enough to scare him quite a bit. >> it sounded like lightning hit a tree next to us, then we heard glass shattering. i started shaking. can you imagine a car is going to drive-through your building? seconds earlier, who knows what would have happened.

it was very scary. >> there are usually two to three people who sit in that room. they are off on vacation this week. the driver of the car was not seriously hurt. more witnesses took the stand today at the trial of the woman accused of murdering her co-worker. one described britney norwood's wounds after murray was found dead. we have the latest from the trial. >> reporter: collin o'brien was the first person to take the stand. he's a montgomery police officer. he was off duty. he met the ambulance carrying britney norwood to the hospital. he collected her clothing and put those items in evidence bags for dna testing. he described norwood's wounds, cuts to the chest, legs arms and a gash on her head. a one to two inch cut runni inn

parallel. it's a common injury when a knife blade slips through your hands. the defense objected to that. he admitted he believed initially it was a defensive wound on her hand. he said, i truly believed she was a victim when she came in. o'brien was asked to remove several articles of clothing from an evidence bag. he showed a bloodstained pair of socks and yoga pants ripped and cut in the crotch area. they are trying to show the cover up. the torn clothing shows she had the presence of mind to try to cover her tracks. prosecution wants to prove premeditation to ask for life without parole. britney norwood did kale jana murray.

they are not disputing it. it was not premeditated. the defense is trying to get the jurors to go on conviction of a lesser charge to spare norwood from life behind bars. in rockville, megan mcgrath, news 4. an emergency room nurse who cared for britney norwood took the stand today. chris gordon will have more coming up on news 4 at 5:00. the criminal trial for john edwards will move ahead. a federal judge denied several motions today that would have dismissed the case. edwards is charged with using $1 million from supporters to hide his pregnant mistress. he's also charged with helping falsify campaign finance reports. edwards pleaded not guilty. he says in part, i finally get my day in court and people get to hear my side. a financial meltdown in greece and the rest of europe

well, yesterday we said it's too early to talk about snow but you are still talking. >> i am. i think we're going to see snow in our area. what does that mean? does it mean problems on the road? no. does it mean you have to buy a shovel? no. does that mean to get the neighbor kid? no. it's not that kind of snow, but i would not be surprised to see the first flakes of the season

in many areas especially to the west of washington, d.c. the threat is out there. it looks like it's going to be a big snowstorm to the north and east. out there now, take a look at the cloud cover across the area. the rain came through. some of you are seeing a lot of rain. it was a steady rain for the time being or most of the day. right now, we are looking at the clouds across the area. a few showers. you can see the showers in portions of virginia, loudoun county and up through frederick county and up through the maryland/pennsylvania border. most of the rain is gone for now. we have the frontal boundary and the rain working along the front. we are going to see showers as we talked about during the day yesterday. make sure you take the umbrella. also, make sure you take the jacket. there's cold air filtering on in through here. back to the west, the next storm system. this is the one, the piece of energy that's going to ride along the coast and give us not just a cold and rainy day, but the first snow flakes of the

season. temperatures outside. 63 degrees. nice and mild today, right? well, take a look at this. to the north, much cooler. 52 in hagerstown. 52 in maryland. it's where the cold air is coming from. fredericksburg at 75 degrees. a huge disparity in the temperatures. that's all because of the frontal boundary. to the north, 39 at state college. 80 in richmond. that's the air we have coming down now. it's fall, the clash of the seasons. today, fall wins out. by saturday, winter is going to win out. we have cool, if not cold air into the night. temperatures are only into the upper 40s to low 50s tomorrow. here comes our storm system with rain saturday night. the snow back towards the mountains. as the system moves up, enough cold air that we see a lot of snow back toward the mountains, pennsylvania. as it ends, the snow works through the d.c. metro area, i think. most areas seeing few flames.
