we're following two developing stories. first the weather. it's not even halloween yet, but the first winter storm of the season is taking shape. a lot will see snow, and others just rain. a water rescue. the victim is a deer. pulled to safety this morning. we'll have those stories for you this morning. welcome, i am barbara harrison and it's friday. the northeast is already seeing the snow fall in parts of new york and connecticut and

massachusetts. saw as much as two inches of the white stuff this week. many areas saw a fix of snow and freezing rain. there is no traffic problems b connected with the wintry weather. no signs of snow but a colder start for the day. tom kierein joins us for the forecast. >> we have signs of autumn. that's for sure. look at the gorgeous peak autumn color here in northwest washington. a live picture from the sky watcher camera. you can see the clouds coming in from the south and west and that's where the storm's coming from. we have a partly sunny sky, and after a very cold start this morning in the mid to low 30s,

now it's at 37 at reagan national. that is the zone that could have the majority of the accumulating snow. it's coming from a storm system gathering strength now in the tennessee valley and moving off the atlantic seaboard, and coming our way by late tonight and tomorrow. right now we have sunshine and you see the clouds beginning to move in through the west and they will be with us as we get in through the morning hours. highs only reaching low 50s, and a northeasterly breeze. a look and potential for snow. i will show you my forecast map and the timing on all of this is well, and that will be coming up in a few minutes and how rare the october snow is for us. well, snow may not be in the forecast until tomorrow, but local governments are making sure they are prepared for winter today.

crews for the d.c. department of public works and ddot conducted a dry run to make sure that everybody knows the proper protocol for when the snow does fall. tracee wilkins has more from forestville. >> here inside the department of public works they are preparing for snow and they have their trucks and equipment and looking at the roads and some of you may be thinking it's a little early for that, and to help get you in the mood, here you go. this is what the workers had to imagine as they drove around the county this morning. the roads are clear and not even a dusting of snow this morning, and a perfect time more than 400 of the department of public works employees to get out on the road and drill for snow, and they are testing everything from personnel preparedness and the actual routes.

this year every snow removal truck will be equipped with an automatic locater, and it will allow the command center to keep track of ever truck so they will know what roads have been plowed and they will know a second goes off of the route. it's helpful for drivers in the field. >> it's showing you everywhere right now, i am going down the street and it's giving you the street names and everything. >> for workers doing the coordination back at the command center. >> we wanted to know where our drivers were, and if they were in distress or needed help or how they were making prau gres, and that's what the system will help us do. >> reporter: people who live in the county will able to go online and track them as well, and that's not coming this winter but next winter, you should be able to see where the trucks are and when they are coming to you.

new today, a water rescue in the title basin, and let's say it was not your typical victim. a deer wound up in the water by the fdr bridge. it had no problems swimming and smashing around but could not scale the high walls around the basin. the police and fire and ams responded and helped to fish the daughter out. it had to be tranquilized in order to get it back to shore. it was a little cold, so they plan on warming him up a bit before they set him free in a local park. let's check on the danella, waiting for snow. >> i have my turtle neck on and ready to go, but hopefully i'm not going to see any of that. and your trip out of the house anytime soon is looking good. i-95 right now not seeing any problems for you. in fact, if you are making the trip and we will switch over to

3-d and take the ride up towards 95. and not seeing any problems in lorton, and traveling on i-95 north and southbound, you are clear in both directions. and this is the view at duke street. not seeing any problems as you make your way across the 14th street bridge. >> i better glad it's going to be saturday when we have our first snow? >> you are right about that. right now jurors are hearing day three of argue manies from the prosecution in the lemon murder trial. we have an update now. >> barbara, the jury heard this morning from amanda kramer. she's one of the evidence technicians that helped to process the day that the murder was discovered. the jury was shown a screwdriver and box cutter found inside both

covered in blood. she found blood on the sink in the bathroom, and she found a partial hand principle the in blood on the wall. jurors were shown pictures taken inside the victim's car, and there was blood on the drive shift and on the bottom of the door frame as well as on a baseball cap found in the backseat. norwood moved murray's car after the murder. on cross-examination, the defense raised the issue of evidence contamination. the box cutter and other tools that were found on the scene were not individually bagged by the crime teches and were put together in the toolbox raising the possibility that clean items were blood yaed by other items later put in the box. in their effort to prove pre-med indication, prosecutors put the supervisors of the store's alarm company up on the stand. he testified the store closed at

9:45 p.m. the night of the murder and re-opened at 10:05. that's a 20-minute gap. prosecutors have been trying to prove pre-med indication. and they are saying she lured her back to the store after the women closed up and left for the evening. they are saying norwood called murray on the cell phone and said i left my wallet in the store and i need you to come back and let me in and that's when the murder occurred. the defense said it was not premedicated and did not happen like that. after returning for the wallet, the two women got into an argument inside the store, and brittany norwood, quote, unquote, lost it, and the sloppy cover up she attempted to do is proof that there was no pre-med indication, because she did not have a good plan, that a lot of things she did after the murder did not make sense, and they say that means it was not premeditated. the jury is continuing to hear testimony and we're expecting a

full day here today. today the local man suspected in the disappearance of a maryland woman in aruba can learn if he will be allowed to go free. he has not been charged with anything, but prosecutors suspect him of being involved in the death of robin gardener. they say they have enough evidence to hold him longer. >> they say they have a good case to present. from the re-enactment, we have come to the conclusion that it's highly unlikely that she went into the water there. we know for certain that what mr. gee dawn yo is telling us is not the truth. >> if the prosecution has enough evidence he may be able to hold him for another 30 days. he claims he did nothing wrong and claims gardener was swept

out to see while the two were smo snorkeling. prosecutors say this school bus driver met the potential hitman on the website. they negotiated the price of the murder down from $1,000 to $500, but could only afford a down payment of $100, and she refused to pay for the airfare, and she asked for a two for one deal and wanted the hitman to kill her boyfriend as well. today police and volunteers are resuming their search near richmond for a missing boy for autism. robert wood jr. vanished on sunday and authorities believe he is still alive. today they are searching near

meadow park instead of king's dominion. new allegations this morning in the federal probe into d.c. mayor vincent gray's election campaign. an anonymous source tells the press that brown told federal prosecutors gray handed him a list of talking points to use against the then mayor adraeen fenty. a federal grand jury is investigating brown's claims that he was paid by gray's campaign to bash fenty. gray has denied the allegations. a heads up, if you plan on taking metro this weekend four green line stations will be closed for track work. they will be closed through monday morning.

free shuttle buses will take you betwe between the plaza and the lines. metro is calling the free transfer a virtual tunnel. you will have 30 minutes to leave one station and work about a block outdoors to the other station. you won't be charged to re-enter the system. residents in one d.c. neighborhood are on alert today after several people reported seeing a large cat that resembles a mountain lion. it has been spotted in a wooded area near the park. some people say they have seen the cat as far back as february. while they cannot confirm it's a mountain lion, the spokesperson says they are taking the report seriously. they say somebody may have been keeping this animal as a pet and let it go after they could not take care of it. it's 12 minutes after 11:00 now. coming up, it's a busy weekend

13-year-old boy was pulled from the rubble of an apartment building that collapsed on sunday, and the boy was conscience but injured and was rushed to a waiting ambulance. with temperatures dropping and snow falling, they now expect the death toll to rise. at least 570 people confirmed dead and 2,300 others wounded. later today, students and faculties will march to their own occupied d.c. protest. the group will gather at 5:00 p.m. for a rally at the howard campus, and then they will join the two other occupations taking place. organizers say today's march will bring more racial diversity to the occupy protest. they believe the issued raised by the demonstrations should resonate with african-americans in the area who experience unemployment and poverty in greater percentages than everybody else.

>> today former president, bill clinton, will be talking economics at georgetown university. his foundation is partnering with the schools for ways to alleviate poverty and help protect the environment. today's symposium will focus on the lessons learned from the clinton/gore era. four average americans got a chance to break bread with the president. she was winners of the dinner with barack contest. the four winners had given at least $5 to the president's re-election bid. his guest included a retired teacher a. postal worker, a small business owner and an artist. they were flown from arizona, colorado, and states important to the re-election campaign.

and this saturday kids will lace up their shoes for the annual marine corps marathon. the route snakes its way through d.c. runners will get a tour of the city while running the 26.2 miles. this event means a lot to the marines that will run in it. >> this is the marine corps's opportunity to showcase what it is they do to the people. it's one of the big events we have throughout the year and we actually get in with the people, and what we do here is similar to what we do on the battlefield. the operations and support that we provide here is very similar to the same things we do on the battlefield. >> organizers expect more than 20,000 people to participate in the marathon, and to make sure that everybody can get to the starting line on time. metro is opening at 5:00 a.m. on sunday morning. and tom, what kind of weather can we expect on sunday morning

at 5:00 a.m. >> no snow, i am happy to report. >> out of the way by then? >> gone, clearing and sunny. but cold. temperatures could only be in the 30s in washington on sunday morning. we have turned cold here since last night. this morning it has been quite cold. we have been in the 30s all morning and in the last hour or so we climbed into the 40s. there is a live picture. and the sunshine in washington and it's up to 47 at reagan national. it's a dry 32 dew point, and that's a key factor because once we get precipitation falling it will tend to fall down to that freezing mark dew point. and right now, the northeasterly wind is down to 5 or 10 miles per hour. and it's rare to get snow in washington in october. we have only had it happen three times when we had measurable snow. and october of 79 was the last

time. 32 years ago. that's how rare this is. we have a winter storm watch out all these counties in blue, and all of these counties around the blue ridge, and then maryland's counties along the pennsylvania border and up into pennsylvania, and that extends all the way up into new england. the storm watch means accumulating snow is likely and it could be five inches or more. all of this coming from a storm center into the tennessee valley, and some of the moisture and southern west virginia, it will take a while to get here, because it will track a little further east and move along the atlantic seaboard and help up towards boston. and right now a chill in the air. out of the mountains, we had quite a bit of frost there. from the shenandoah east, not a lot of frost, above freezing in most locations and right now above the 40s.

and in the last 12 hours we had our morning hours clear up temporarily but here comes more coming in from the south and west. let's go forward now into the afternoon hours, and we will have some of this rain developing and moving on in, perhaps around midnight. this whole green area is rain. the blue area is snow. and that looks like it could be moving in around midnight into the mountains, and then still raining overnight from the blue ridge east, and into washington and through the morning on saturday. i think it will stay rain. and then as we get into saturday afternoon, it's 7:30, saturday evening, around 5:00 or 6:00, when we see the change over from rain into snow. this is the period of snow when we get lighter accumulations on grassy areas closer to washington. throughout much of the day it will be snowing as we get through the day out of the mountains. by 11:00 on sunday morning and by dawn, we will be clearing out. so for the rest of the afternoon, increasing clouds and chilly afternoon highs, only in the low 50s.

northeast wind overnight tonight, cloudy and we will have the sunset at 6:13, and our temperatures, upper 40s early evening and low 40s by midnight and continuing to drop as we get into the early morning hours tomorrow. again, it looks like rain early on in washington, but points west, that blue zone, that's where they could get six inches or more, but closer to washington lighter amounts and that would be on grassy areas, and that will be on saturday afternoon where we get that closer to washington, and rain and wind further to the east, and as we get into the rest of the weekend we will have improving news, sunday, monday and tuesday, good for trick-or-treaters, and midweek we should be warming up. thank you, tom. we will check on the midday traffic now. danella sealock keeping an eye on things for us. >> so far if you are getting ready to head out of the house, get on the roadways, it's

right now on news4 midday, there is no snow on the ground yet but that did not stop prince georges' officials from getting ready. more than 400 employees hit the roads this morning and went through routes for when the snow hits so they will be ready. they have a new tracking program that allows headquarters to see what roads have been cleared and which ones still need to be plowed. tom says we can see a little snow. not sure how much. let's ask him. >> locally probably not much at all. probably a little bit on grassy areas. it's areas to the west where we have the winter storm watch in effect. these counties in blue, that's where there is heightened concern for accumulating wet snow. unfortunately, most of the trees are still bearing leaves, and the snow falling could put a

weight load on the weaker branches that could break off and that could widespread power outages. this winter storm watch means there is a potential for five inches of snow or more. and it's going into the eastern part of west virginia and all of western maryland and maryland counties along the pennsylvania border. that's the zone that could get some of the accumulating snow. concern the temperatures are in the 40s, but quite a chill in the air. just in the mid-and upper 40s now and over the last 12 hours, we have had the clouds beginning to come back in from the south and west. for the rest of the afternoon, expect increasing clouds and temperatures climbing into the low 50s, and then we will be down into the mid-40s by midnight, and then colder weather moving in after that. possible snow, three to six inches, plus from the blue ridge west and closer to washington, lighter amounts, and that would be on grassy areas, and that

would be during the afternoon on saturday before it all ends saturday evening, and then moves away, and then we get the sunshine back on sunday and we will have pleasant weather for trick-or-treaters on monday. a chill in the air over the next week. >> we don't need to take out the skis or snow shoes? >> not legally, anyway. maryland state police are vest gaying a second death at a mental health facility. a staffer found the man dead in his room last night. they are withholding his identity until his family is notified. last week a 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with killing his roommate and he was put in the facility after killing his psychiatrist back in 2006. and there will be a press conference on the murder of a burger king employee back in march. there are reports of the

possible death of the assistant manager. the suspect waited for the manager to open the store and killed her. and yesterday the doctor nicknamed the father of propofol took the stand for the defense team. he testified the prosecution's propofol's expert may have made a mistake in determining how much of the drug murray gave michael jackson. he said murray most likely did not administer a lethal dose, but he did make mistakes. >> conrad murray has been accused of infusing a dose of propofol and leaving his patient. can you justify that? >> absolutely not. >> an addiction expert also testified saying he believed jackson was addicted to pain killers which caused his insomnia.

no word on whether dr. murray will take the stand on his own defense. he is worried they could lose jurors. police in kansas city, missouri, say the family of a missing toddler known as baby lisa cancelled key entinterview with them. the family lawyer says the half brothers are too exhausted to do the interviews and they have not set a date, though. the boys talked to investigators on the daily saw went miss and investigators say they have more questions they would like to ask. and a former cia contractor is on trial. jeffrey lee faces nine counts of child porn possession. they found a list of sexual encounters with 47 minors when they searched lee's home. they are looking into whether

the encounters really happened. lee's arrest is particularly unsettling to neighbors whose children have played with his kids. >> we want to make sure that nothing is communicated to their kids, because we don't want to have anything bad happen with them, but also that we need to stay away and bewa wary because something is going on. many students have been living in hotels in the last week after mold was found in their dorms. school officials are moving the displaced students into a cruise ship. the ship will serve as an offshore dorm for the 250 students until the end of the semester. housing the students on the ship costs about the same as hotels and it's closer to campus. we will check the midday traffic, and let's talk to danella sealock to see how things are moving.

considering the challenges still facing the euro zone. and the markets are lower following very strong sessions for the global markets yesterday. we saw stocks rallying on increased firepower out of europe's bailout fund and the decision to strike $140 billion off the greece's debt. right now the dow is lower by 6%, not that steep of a decline but in the red. and five weeks for new meg whitman to ditch the plan to spin off the $40 million pc business. whitman endorsed the split but she and hp management determined the spinoff was too costly, and 1.5 billion additionally, and 1 additional billion in a year. the south korean company only really started devoting itself
