5:12 pm
5:13 pm
5:14 pm
winter weather is already arrived in parts of new england and will linger for a little bit. a storm dropped snow on parts of massachusetts and connecticut and more of the white stuff is expected with another storm heading up the east coast. parts of new england can expect anything from a dusting of snow to more than ten inches this weekend. >> whoa! and maybe more than that. >> oh, doug. >> maybe more than that.
5:15 pm
that same storm system moved into new england, albany, new york. the frontal boundary gave us the cold air. now the coastal storm that's starting to develop. it's all coming together to give us the potential for a first real snowstorm in october. >> he's in heaven right now. >> yeah, i'm excited. i wish i was going to get snow at my house. my kids wondered if we were going to get snow. i don't think so. i don't think it's enough to shovel or enough to make a snowman. however, to the west and maybe just to the west, you folks probably will have enough for those things. you can see the clouds have made their way in here. we are starting to see the storm system affect the area. you can see the clouds. no rain now across the region. you can see rain picking up here on the radar. this is not reaching the ground yet back toward winchester to the south of warrenton and fredericksburg.
5:16 pm
it's going to fill in for the next couple hours. you can see what i'm talking ability. all this moisture moving our way. it's snowing in west virginia and portions of virginia where we are seeing snow and we are going to see heavy snow in this area as the storm system gets going. believe it or not, the coastal storm hasn't developed, yet. it's just starting to show signs of development and eventually going to make its way up the coast. for us, 49 degrees is the temperature. winds out of the east-southeast at 7 miles per hour. 46 in hagerstown. 45 in charlottesville. stanton, the temperature there is 43 degrees. as we widen out, notice where the colder air is, elkins, west virginia. roanoke. the reason roanoke is colder than us in the d.c. area, because of the falling precipitation. the rain, the snow actually bringing down colder air.
5:17 pm
by early tomorrow morning, it's going to be cold. here comes the rain. look at this. by 1:30 in the morning, everybody seeing rain and snow back toward the west including hagerstown, winchester, front royal and to the west, romney, i expect it to be all snow back toward this area. tomorrow morning, waking up to more rain. some of the rain will be heavy at times. i think the rain-snow line might be farther to the east around frederick, hagerstown. it's going to move toward the east during the day, toward the frederick area, western portions of loudoun county before sweeping through. we may see a burst of heavy snowfall in gaithersburg and fairfax. in the district, it should not amount to much on the roadways. that's around 7:00 or 8:00 before the system slides off. so, how much snow are we going to see out of this?
5:18 pm
we have a winter storm warning through the day. it includes loudoun county and fauquier county. the west virginia counties in the area. you have a winter storm watch toward montgomery county and howard county for the potential of upwards of five inches of snow, mostly to the west. damascus and areas like that. washington, south and east, not dealing with the advisories. i don't expect to see any because we are not going to see the snow. north and west, four to eight inches of snow. in toward virginia and around the martinsburg area and into west virginia. then down along the blue ridge. the blue ridge will see that, too. i have you in the two to four. the higher peaks, anything over 1,000 feet will get more snow than two to four. around the district, herndon and manassas, i think less than an inch. i wouldn't be surprised to see it give us more than that on the
5:19 pm
grassy surfaces. this will be an all rain and wind event. winds 20 to 30 even 40 miles an hour late in the day. we have to watch out for the storm system closely. if you don't see snow, it's going to be nasty. rain in the evening. light. cold. 44 to 47 degrees. tomorrow morning, the rain is starting. some will be heavy at times. snow well to the west. the winds will be increasing. temperatures 36 to 39 degrees. here comes a day in the middle of january, rain heavy at times. windy and told. winds at 20 to 30 miles an hour shifting to the northwest with the cold air coming in. 48 on your sunday as we will see things really get better on sunday, monday and into tuesday. the temperatures move into the mid-50s. >> all right. thanks, doug. we're ready, we think. >> we think, yeah. >> we have a program note we are excited to share with you now. nbc news is about to unveil a
