boy's fight for his life. snow in october. there is a storm bearing down on washington. some are seeing rain. some will soon see snow as winter comes early on the east coast. >> right now rain is falling across much of the area. >> it is turning to snow in virginia. let's go to doug kammerer. what is the latest? >> we do have accumulating snow out in the west of hardy county, west virginia. the high areas of the mountains in west virginia and chester gap right here we have snow upwards of 2 inches already. and you can see the rain moving through too. the temperatures are falling and so is the rainfall around the washington, d.c. area frederick reporting rain. but is it snow in the higher elevations in the blue ridge and moving back to the west. so we are going to see that snow build in throughout evening

hours and just about everybody to the west of washington is under a warning or advisory. in the pink that is a winter storm warning for snowfall that could exceed 4 to 5 inches. in the purple this is a winter weather advisory. we could see accumulation in that area too. i just updated the snowfall map. i'll show you who i think gets what coming up. >> thanks, doug. out in minnesota you see snowplows all the time before halloween. but not around here. snow pants either. who buys snow pants? shomari stone is out in virginia where it is wet and cold tonight. >> reporter: i found a man who took the time to buy snow pants. hold that for just one thought. i'm at a seasonal pumpkin patch in sterling, virginia and the owner is concerned about

colorado a couple days ago. in litchfield, connecticut a couple inches fell today. even out in amarillo, texas they got a taste of winter with 2 1/2 inches of snow with temperatures below freezing tonight. a little boy lost in the wild. stories like this one so often end in tragedy. but tonight there is celebration. jackie bensen joins us live from richmond with the latest. >> reporter: the odds were against this little boy and he defied them all. >> no one on the team ever gave up. and i have to say that there was some times that you just had to reach down and find that faith that you were going to find him and whether it's appropriate or not for everyone, there is a god.

he listens to prayer. and prayers were answered. >> reporter: it was an emotional, joyful and a week of searching for robert wood, jr. with cold weather coming it didn't look good for the boy. he is autistic and cannot speak. he was fourd near a wreak about a mile from where he disappeared during a walk with his family on sunday. one can only imagine the boy's fear during a long scary night in the woods. but doctors at vcu medical center say he is doing very well despite being exposed to the elements. >> when he first arrived he was looking at us. he was surprisingly cooperative with the evaluations and when he saw his mother he looked at her and smiled. that was heart warming. >> 6,000 people took part in the

search. some gathered to give thanks if for kwlout come. >> it was tough going. we had a lot behind us but god was with us all the way. >> reporter: the boy's father says that robert is a strong and determined little boy. we never gave up hope he would return home safe. the family has been here every hour and involved in the search 200 percent. thank you so much, everybody. robert is home. he will remain here at vcu medical center for a couple of days and then is it home to his nice warm bed. back to you. >> thanks. in the district tonight they have closed the main hall at union station. a piece of the ceiling fell on a worker tonight. that worker wasn't injured. the ceiling was damaged in the

earthquake a couple months ago. crews will begin repairs next week. but metro, amtrak, bus and taxi services are not affected. > the trial of a woman accused of killing a co-worker in a bethesda store will resume on monday. two people testified they heard screams for help that night but did nothing. both worked at the apple store next a door. one woman heard arguing and pleas of please help me. the other witness would not answer questions outside the courthouse. 30 days in jail for the man accused of the disappearance of a local woman in aruba. a judge denied bail for gary giordano. however, he has not been charged with a crime. he claims that gardner was swept out the sea while they were snorkeling but investigators don't think his story adds up.

there be more staff on duty and all patients are being reassessed after another murder in a mental hospital in maryland. the most recent happened yesterday at the cliffton t. perkens hospital. a person was found dead in his room. another patient is charged with murder. it happened a beak after another patient killed his roommate. perkens is maryland's only maximum security psychiatric hospital. investigators are looking at

whether an attempted kidnapping in virginia might be related to one in fredericksburg. it happened on wednesday night. the 17-year-old girl says a man tried to force her into his car. when she refused she says he told her he would be back for her on friday in fredericksburg a 9-year-old child says a man chased her and tried to get her into his minivan. no one has been arrested. we are -- >> howard university showed support for the occupy movement. it started at howard and ended it the u.s. chamber of commerce. organizers say they hope this march will help change that. police in rite gear ordered

protesters to leave this morning. protesters have been sleeping in tents for three weeks. many refused to leave. 51 were arrested. the police needed to clear the area for health concerns. they will be allowed back after the cleanup is complete. police pulled over a woman who was nearly naked. she was driving over 125 miles per hour. when she got out of the car she was wearing only very sheer closing and very high heels. she has been charged on eight counts including as you might suspect, drunk driving. judge "rock center" debuts at 10:00. last night he joined jimmy fallon to slow jam the news. >> the protesters have taken on

the doppler radar showing the rain on the light side right now. the moderate showers coming into to prince william county. we will see that over the next couple hours too. you can see where the snow is. it's in the higher elevations in the blue ridge and the potomac highlands in western maryland. that's where we have accumulations. reports in west virginia of about 2 inches that has have been seeing snow for the last four to five hours there. they could continue stereoto see snow and will the pile up. the wider view showing this area down here. this is our storm beginning to make its way out the sea. you see these showers right here. that's the first signs that the coastal storm is starting to develop. the storm has not developed yet. is it going to develop fast and strong. and that is why we have winter storm warnings in hagerstown,

frederick, maryland, lees burg, manassas and larae area. manassas is in that winter weather watch. we will watch montgomery county and prince william. winter weather advisory in effect for them. we will see accumulation in all these places. 43 degrees is the current temperature. winds out of the northeast at 12 miles per hour. that gives us a wind chill in the mid-30s. 2349 frederick and 37 in winchester. 34 degrees out there in petersburg. cold snow and rain. you add wind on top of that and you have one heck of a storm. there it is. an october snowstorm. that is very rare. not just a snowstorm. we could see over a foot of snow in places to the north and west. let's show you the totals right

now. one good news is we will see sunshine on sunday. will the be cold but we will see sunshine. here's the snowfall totals and i have upped he's. 8 to 12 inches. that includes hagerstown west of martens burg and portions of hardy and west virginia and 4 to 8 inches on the i-81 corridor, down through front royal and harrison burg. in the east, 2 to 4 inches in culpepper, loudoun county and also including the germantown area and urbanna. 2 to 4 inches for you. an an inch or more if heavy banding sets up. that's always a possibility with these storms. down to the south and east it is rain and wind. tomorrow morning rain heavy at times and wind increasing. tomorrow afternoon the rain is

heavy at times but changing to snow in some locations west of washington. windy and cold with a high temperature of 36 to 41 degrees. 48 on sunday, 56 on monday and tuesday. and getting back to where our average temperatures are by the end of the period. so that's good news there. an early season snowstorm. it does not mean we will see a snowy winter, however. >> it will not mean will the affect school tomorrow. too bad it's not a school night. >> but watch out for power outages to the north and west. a scientist from new hampshire is being treated after suffering a stroke at the south pole. she arrived at dulles earlier this week. she is at johns hopkins hospital facing a lot of therapy. during a news conference today she and her husband say they are hoping for a full recovery.
