a string of crimes in virginia has a lot of people on edge tonight. four different attempted abductions in two counties. police are looking for any connections. as halloween approaches, neighbors are on edge. good afternoon, everyone. i'm aaron gilchrist. the most recent abduction happened yesterday afternoon. a 21-year-old woman says he ran from a car full of men. it is the latest in a string of disturbing reports, all from spotsylvania county. darcy spencer live in the newsroom. >> news 4 spoke briefly to this latest victim of this attempted abduction today.

she's 20 years old and says she's still very shaken up. police say a man in a car tried to lure her inside, in light of these incidents, halloween will mean an even bigger police presence. authorities in spotsylvania county are investigating a third attempted abduction within a little more than two weeks. the latest incident happened on saturday, just before 3:30 in the afternoon. the victim, a 20-year-old woman, was walking here on ennis brooke circle in the governor's green subdivision. she tells police a honda four-door car pulled up, someone opened the rear passenger door and told her, "let's go." that's when she ran away. neighbors there are on edge. >> we're talking to the neighbors and just making them aware if they haven't been aware to keep an eye out on everybody. >> reporter: officials don't believe the incident is connected to an attempted abduction of a 9-year-old girl on friday, october 21st, also in spotsylvania county. the girl was chased to her home after getting off a school bus on polaris court. the would-be attacker, who may

be high school-aged, had got, out of a minivan. the first attempted abduction had happened on october 15th on poland drive. a 15-year-old girl was the victim. police have identified a suspect that remains at large. we spoke to lieutenant colonel michael tim by phone. >> we have not been able to locate him. we have four federal agencies assisting us and searching for him. >> reporter: investigators say an attempted abduction in stafford on the tuesday night could be connected to the attempted snatching of the 9-year-old girl in spotsylvania county. in that incident, a 17-year-old girl says a man tried to force her into the his beige-colored car around 7:30 in the evening. when she refused, he threatened to come back and get her. police say people should expect to see more patrols on halloween in light of these attacks. >> we typically put out additional manpower. we are putting out extra additional manpower because of the incidents. >> reporter: colonel tim tells me the sheriff's department is very concerned about these

incidents. he wants young people to travel together on halloween night and for parents to closely supervise their kids during trick or treating. aaron, back to you. >> darcy spencer, thank you. from maryland to maine, people are digging out from yesterday's freak october snowstorm. the big problem right now, power outages. more than 3 million people still in the dark and maybe without power for a week or more. trains and airlines are still trying to get back on track and some folks in connecticut are looking for answers tonight after they were stuck on the tarmac for seven hours. franc frances frances koh has more. >> reporter: cleanup begins. >> i think mother nature played a trick on us. >> reporter: a trick that has left as many as 3 million from virginia to vermont in the dark. >> snow hit the tree, hit the leaves, the tree just got heavy and a lot of tree damage. >> reporter: states of emergency were declared for parts of new

york, new jersey, massachusetts, and connecticut. some could remain without power for as long as a week. >> this is an historic storm. >> reporter: snowfall started saturday and smashed records as it moved north. new york city, which has not seen measurable snow in october since 1952, tallied more than an inch in central park. the unexpected storm also tied up air travel. thousands faced cancellations and delays at newark and jfk. passengers on a jetblue flight diverted to connecticut waited seven hours on the plane before being allowed into the airport terminal. >> children under the age of 3 for eight hours on a plane isn't pleasant. >> reporter: and as the cleanup continues and the frost starts to melt off the pumpkins -- >> i think we're in for a big, bad winter. here we are in october and we've got snow. >> reporter: winter is still more than six weeks away. frances koh, nbc news. >> and yesterday's winter

weather created traffic headache for drivers on major maryland highways today. route 50 reopened late this afternoon after being closed in both directions for more than a day. a downed power line shut down route 50 around 4:00 yesterday afternoon, just east of the split with 301. take a look at the scene earlier today when drivers encountered major delays in the area. crews had hoped to reopen the highway by 11:00. that didn't happen, though. the state highway administration says it's unclear exactly what brought the line down. heavy snow took down dozens of trees and power lines across maryland. australian airline qantas could be back in the air soon after union strikes shut that airline down. the strike forced qantas to abruptly ground its entire fleet yesterday, stranding thousands of passengers. but an australian court ended the union strike and employee lockout today. qantas says it will resume a limited schedule as soon as tomorrow. workers went on strike concerned about a restructuring plan that would send jobs overseas. rescue crews have temporarily suspended the search

for three workers missing after a deadly grain elevator explosion in kansas. that explosion happened around 7:00 last night, about 50 miles northwest of kansas city. it killed three people and sent at least two others to the hospital with burns. three people are still unaccounted for. that search expected to resume once better equipment and structural engineers are able to complete inspections. residents several miles away were able to feel that blast. herman cain continues to lead in the polls among republican presidential candidates. "the des moines register" surveyed likely iowa caucus voters. cain came out on top with 23% of the vote. mitt romney came in a close second. it's a boost for cain, who's been answering questions about his controversial political ad showing his chief of staff smoking. >> people are connecting with me and the specific solutions i'm putting on the table. >> meanwhile, rick perry and michele bachmann are trying to regain early momentum that they have lost in recent polls. the iowa caucuses will be held

a surfer in california making progress after being attacked by a great white shark. that 27-year-old had just gone into the water yesterday morning in monterey, california, when the shark bit him on the neck and forearm. that chunk also took a good chunk of his board too. the surfer's friend pulled him out of the water. other surfers worked to stop the bleeding million paramedics arrived. doctors say he will recover. a cruise ship came to the aid of five people stranded in the chilly waters of the north atlantic. norwegian cruise lines released this video which shows their ship the norwegian "gem" rescuing five canadians off of a

sailboat yesterday. the boat lost power and was taking on water in rough seas. dorm room mold from hurricane irene forcing hundreds of st. mary's college students to spend the rest of their semester living at sea. [ horn blares ] >> that'll wake you up. this is the 300-foot cruise ship they'll call home. the coast guard spent the morning getting it ready for move-in. that meant testing emergency signals along the "sea voyager" and cleaning things up a bit. the school's president says this floating dorm is the best option for keeping students close to campus. >> it's ideal to get the ship in and students in. it's a mess of an ordeal having them living in three different hotels. >> the ship is docked on the st. mary's river, right on the edge of campus. the students will move on to the ship tomorrow. a last-minute concert cancellation sends some meal ka fans into a fury. coming up, why the band says it had no choice but to stop the

there. that friday concert was canceled because of security concerns about a barricade near the stage. when fans got word of that, they didn't hold back. they stormed the stage and started throwing things into the crowd. a makeup show last night was canceled too. four of the concert promoters were arrested for overselling the venue. well, 30,000 people took a 26.2-mile tour of the nation's capital today and they did it on foot. the 36th annual marine corps marathon brought out runners from all over the place. and as derrick ward show us, they had a lot of different reasons for pushing forward to the finish line. >> reporter: there were those who come just to support. it's her first time at the marine core marathon. >> this is my first one. my husband's second marathon, at age 62. >> and they're getting ready to come by, so if you don't mind, i'd like to the turn my attention this way. >> reporter: and then there's the spectacle of the event, this test of will and strength draws thousands each year to walk, run, and cycle, and just to see. this race courses back some of the most noted symbols of a city

steeped in democracy and patriotism. and as with the branch of the service for which it's named, the marine corps marathon is steeped in a sense of espirit decorps. and for the first runner coming across, it's about overcoming challenges. >> i was able to hold on. thankfully. i thank the lord for being able to do that and giving me the strength to make it through first. >> reporter: now, of course, this marathon is all about a test of will, of inner strength and ability. but this one guy who finished his race and did even better than he expected. >> i've been training for it all summer and i'm glad i was able to come out here and put my training to good use and it just paid off in the end. so for a first marathon, i couldn't be happier. >> reporter: third place. not bad for the first-time runner. these runners take to the course not just for their own sense of achievement, but through sponsorships and donations, many help others. and that makes just crossing the

oklahoma as i zipped by with my shirt on. people say, does it really matter? yes, it does. especially after mile 20. but outside, wow, was it cold this morning. i did not dare show my face in front of that crowd. people's like, it's the weather man. not going to catch me on that. outside, 35 degrees this morning at 8:00 a.m. when they fired the h howitzer over the crowd. cold stuff. temperature now, 51, our current temperature. with a light breeze out of the north-northwest and only 5 miles per hour. and it's going to be another cold start first thing tomorrow morning. temperatures already back into the mid-40s in gaithersburg, 50 now in rockville, ft. belvoir at 47. 47, dulles airport. 47, also, rather, out towards -- 46 now in manassas. 48 in huntington in calvert county. and clear skies and a fading breeze is going to allow these temperatures, 40 to near 50 now, so drop way back into the 20s

and 30s again tomorrow morning. in town and along the bay, mid- to upper 30s. but you folks out towards the blue ridge, that's going to be a sub-freezing start again tomorrow morning. nothing on radar right now. the nearest raindrops to us are still way out here across northwestern parts of ohio. we've got another dry day coming tomorrow. rain chances return first thing tuesday morning. your sunday evening will be dry, but chilly. temperatures back down into the upper 30s and low 40s by 11:00 this evening, with that mostly clear sky in place. high pressure is in charge of our weather. so as a result, it's going to be a cold start tomorrow morning. bright sunshine to start, then some more clouds. here's your evening forecast, clear sky, quite chilly, a light breeze. back into the upper 40s. overnight, clear skies. high clouds moving in first thing in the morning. wake up temperatures, mid-20s to mid- and upper 30s, right in town and along the bay. then tomorrow, plenty of

sunshine to get your monday started, it so will look nice, feel a little nicer, but increasing clouds during the afternoon. milder today by a couple of ticks. up into the mid- and upper 50s tomorrow. cloud comes back monday night. rain likely for at least the first half of the day on tuesday. might linger into the afternoon, but it should be out of here by about sunset. that will set us up for a nice little moderating trend as we go through the rest of the week. high, low to mid-60s wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday. that'll be nice. and, you know, as cold as it was this morning, a whole lot better than if we run it yesterday. >> that's true. >> that would have been bad. >> thank you, chuck. coming up in sports, things were not looking good for baltimore, until grabs like this

60 points. this afternoon, the cardinals limping into town on a five-game losing streak. so the ravens should dominate. not so fast. ray lewis getting in some exercise here, doing some push-ups. second quarter, cardinals up 10-3. rookie patrick goes to the 18-yard line and makes some moves. breaks some tackles. raven having all kinds of problems. peterson goes 82 yard for the touchdown. it's 17-3, cardinals, like that. first play of the drive, joe throws to tory smith, but how far his hands into the hands of richard marshall. smith would make up for it, but that led to cardinals touchdown and a 24-3 lead. third quarter, ravens down 24-14. flako connects with antwan. only needs one hand. makes a one-handed grab. that's impressive. bolden with seven receptions for 145 yards. that led to a ravens' td.

ray rice rolls in for six. he had just eight carriers last week. today, 18 carriers, 63 yards, and three touchdowns. ravens have the lead. flexing their muscles. under a minute to play, redemption is served. 36-yard gainer. down to the arizona five yard line and the ravens are in business. this sets up this from 25 yards out, it's up and it's good. down by 21 points, the ravens rally to win it 30-27, completing their biggest comeback in franchise history. eli manning and the gianting coming off a buy, hosting jason taylor and the winless dolphins. miami up 7-3, they go for it on fourth quarter and goal. math moore runs nit from a yard out. miami takes a 14-3 lead upset in the making. 12 seconds to go on the half. manning took mario manningham, seven yard touchdown.

giants trail 14-10 at halftime. back they come. fourth quarter, new york down 17-13 now. on third and 12th, manning throws to victor cruz. breaks a tackle right here and into the end zone for a 25-yard score. giants come back to win it 20-17, improving to 5-2. dolphins, ouch, drop to 0-7. in st. louis, world series champion cardinals trying to encourage their brethren, the winless rams, hosting the saints. in the first half, rams on second and goal, a.j. feely, perfect pass to former redskins and bronco, brandon lloyd. eight-yard touchdown. his first td with st. louis. the rams knock off the saints, 31-21, winning their first game of the season. go crazy. hometown hockey. while you may have been sleeping last night, caps' coach bruce boudreau pulled goaltender after giving up three goals to the canucks. boudreau was hoping it would spark the team, but michael neuvirth wasn't any better and the caps lose their second straight.
