>> bank of america announced today that it is dropping plans to charge customers a $5 fee for using that debit card. >> several other banks have also dropped their fee plans now. chris clackum has more. >> reporter: when bank of america announced month before last its plan to charge debit card user as $5 a month fee, the outrage was thunderous. >> this is just another slap in the face for bank of america customers. >> first thing i thought was to go to another bank, but then they'll probably all go to that. >> reporter: instead wells fargo, jpmorgan chase and sun trust were all experimenting with debit card fees but are now backing off. they said our customer choices are most important to us. as a result, we are not currently charging the fee and will not be moving forward with any additional plans to do so. some analysts aren't surprised

by the reversal. >> so bank of america was out on a limb, it was on its own. and it's far more difficult for a bank to stick to its guns on an issue like this when none of its competitors are doing the same. >> reporter: those same analysts won't be surprised either if banks find other fees to raise. just not as conspicuous as the one for using a debit card. ch chris clackum, nbc news. police say six were injured in five separate shootings. the only seriously injured was a 17-year-old shot in the head in george up to. he was hospitalized in critical condition. police believe two of the shootings that were in close proximity are related. police chief cathy lanier also says that in three of the shootings, the victim knew the shooter. and despite the date, she did not believe the shootings were halloween related. >> for october and in the 21

has been enter representeinterr. a lot of people are saying told you so. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, capitol hill. president obama struggled to quit smoking is well documented, but the results of his latest physical show he's tobacco free. the president got a lot of heat from the campaign even from his wife about whether he'd really quit smoking or not. he's been seen in the past chewing nicotine gum. the result of his physical last year showed he was sill using nicotine replacement therapy, but this year's physical concludes the president is in excellent health and officially tobacco free. well, here's a live look at the big board on wall street. stocks plummeted today after word the greek government would let the people vote on whether to accept an unpopular european bailout plan. some lawmakers are in revolt over the plan and the greek government could be in jeopardy. the dow jones industrials fell 297 points today, the nasdaq was off 77 points, and the s&p 500

ended 34 points lower. the sxhik recoveconomic rec at a slow pace, but there are signs americans are willing to spend. last month auto sales jumped with consumers buying more cars and trucks than in previous months, but as michelle franzen reports, it doesn't necessarily mean the overall economy is back on track. >> reporter: u.s. automakers cruised in to positive territory in sales last month with chrysler leading the way. the company had its best sales month in four years. posting a 27% gain. ford saw a 6% jump. >> sales continue to improve sequentially month after month. and we're very encouraged with that. >> reporter: general motors had weaker than expected showing. >> we're pretty satisfied with the results. continues successful strong trend we've had year to date. >> reporter: it is a turnaround from earlier this month when auto sales stalled due to

concerns over the economy and supply disruptions following the japan earthquake, but analysts say it's still too soon to tell. >> we're hopeful. i think it's a good indication. people are going to make this average price of a car now at almost $30,000. so if they're comfortable making that purchase, i think other areas in their life must be, too. >> reporter: for the rest of the economy, the signals are still mixed. orders for manufacturing slowed in october, an unexpected tip fr dip from the previous month. consumers are the biggest driving force and in recent months, americans are pulled back on spending from retail to long term investments like buying homes. the jump in sales for automakers in october analysts say could be the ruflt pept up demand. >> we could expect a plateau later in 2012. we'll still have good year over year growth, but not at the pace that we've seen. >> reporter: consumers now used

60 degrees. continued clearing with some of those clouds out there. temperatures throughout the area again running in the upper 50s to right around 60 degrees. columbia heights at 60 degrees. mitchellville at 61. falls church at 57 degrees. let tee a look at the cloud cover moving out, we had clouds drifting through the area today. all part of that low pressure system that continued to push off to the east and northeast. so a few clouds hanging around gaithersburg and d.c., those are now clearing out. so that's the trend for the evening. we'll head down from 53 to 50 degrees between 5:00 and 7:00. by 9:00, 47 degrees. 11:00, down to 44. today the sunsets at 6:08. so a look at your fast forecast, a chilly and starry evening for us, but not bad for late fall. we'll talk about how much sunshine we'll have around tomorrow and we'll look ahead

again toward the weekend and the next couple of days there after. back to you. nearly 1.8 million homes and businesses across the northeast are still in the dark after last weekend's devastating snowstorm. the blast of winter weather snapped branchs, tore out power lines. power companies say they're struggling to get the lights back on because of the large number of individual outages. cleanup continues in the small town of peru, massachusetts. they received about three feet of snow. authorities are blaming at least 23 death on the storm. hillary rodham clinton lost her mother this morning. dorothy how will rod ham was surrounded by family when she died just after midnight. mrs. rodham usually avoided the spotlight, but she did appear with her daughter during clinton's presidential run. dorothy was widowed back in 1993. aside from her daughter, she leaves behind two sons and four

grandchildren. the family is planning a private memorial service. dorothy was 92. jurors at the lululemon murder trial will soon hear from the victim's mother. the judge ruled today that she can be called as a witness for the prosecution despite objections from the defense. brittany norwood is accused of beating and stabbing jayna murray inside the store and staging a coverup. today prosecutors called a police detective to the stand. he had a three hour interview with norwood the night of the murder and was one of the first officers who believed that norwood was a suspect, not a victim. the jury is expected to hear that taped interview this afternoon. chris gordon is in the courtroom and will have much more in a live report at 5:00. when news 4 at 4:00 continues, kim kardashian shocked fans when she filed for divorce yesterday.

see, if he had the clicker, he'd actually start really doing some trouble with the weather forecast. clearing skies the trend for the overnight period. and as far as our temperatures go, by tomorrow morning, 39 to 38 degrees. you might node one of those big red suits to keep you warm. a little on the chilly side. sun up at 7:36. so we've got low pressure moving out, this area of high pressure move hg iing in, clear skies, s means sunshine for toll. then when we get to thursday, we'll start to pick up a few high clouds, but with a southerly wind, our temperature will be touching close to 70 degrees again. today there's a big storm that will start organizing late today around colorado. a couple inches of snow. they have blizzard warnings up for colorado, even wyoming getting several inches of snow. all from the area of low pressure. here we are thursday afternoon, so it will make its way eastward. i think for us it should pass to the south and west. so we might have a few light

the $5 fee was set to take effect in january. bank of america says it changed its mind after hearing from outranged customers. >> other major banks have also stopped plans to impose a debit fee. stocks plunged as investors got reports from greece that the prime minister there would hold a referendum on an unpopular bailout deal. the dow fell 297 points, the nasdaq dipped about 77. and the s&p closed about 35 points lower. a violent halloween night in the district led to six people being injured in five separate shootings. police believe two of the shootings that were in close proximity are related. cathy lanier says that in three of the shootings, the victim knew the shoot errands despite the date, she does not believe the shootings were halloween related. jurors at the lululemon trial heard testimony from a police detective who believed from the start brittany more wood was a suspect and not a victim. the detective interviewed

first day in november, can we keep it going? >> i'm talking trends because a lot of people get married 11-11-11. they're really concerned about what the weather will be like on that day or at least half of that party maybe. the bride to be. i can't tell you if it's going to be dry on that day, but i can tell you how temperatures are trending, warm, cold.

so if you do get precipitation, i can tell you if it's of the liquid kind as opposed to snow. the areas in pink is where they had two feet of snow. what's left they're us, in west virginia just south of petersburg. temperature at 60 degree. we continue to clear out. 58 degrees in rockville. up in montgomery county, 58 degrees in huntington and 59 over in manassas. next two weeks i think as we head from the 2nd to the 15th, for the the greater part of that period, probably up until the 12th or 13th, we'll have highs in the 50s, 60s and 70s. then right around the mid part of the month, we'll see our temperatures start to drop off and trend more colder toward the 40s. so, again, if we get that precipitation, anything in here which we're likely to, i think it will be all liquid.

erica edwards has more. >> reporter: many women enjoy wine with dinner. after all, an occasional sglas widely cited as heart healthy. but now there's this. a new study finds that as few as three glasses of wine a week can raise the risk for breast cancer. >> that risk was very small, but was statistically significant. >> reporter: they studied nearly 30 years worth of data on more than 100,000 women. those who averaged three to six alcoholic benches a week throughout their adult lives had a 15% higher risk of developing breast cancer. >> alcohol's effect on estrogen may be the link. >> when you look at people who consume alcohol regularly, their blood estrogen levels are higher on average than women who do not consume alcohol. >> reporter: because the risk for breast cancer rises with age, experts say older women may want to talk to their doctor about cutting back on their drinking habits. but when you consider all of the research showing moderate intake

three jet blue flights diverted from new york were stranded for hours at hartford. a diverted american airlines flight from paris also sat for seven hours because there were no customs officers on duty. it's hardly the first time. a much bigger passenger nightmare involving jetblue at jfk in 2007 led to the creation of a passenger bill of rights. and tarmac delay rules that went into effect 18 months ago. those rules require airlines to provide ingworking toilets of two hour delay and how passengers off the plane after three hours. airlines face a fine of $27,500 per passenger. the government says those rules work. so what happens on saturday? >> although the airlines appear to have made a bet with an act of god that they could get off the ground in three hours or less, after they diverted, the airport was completely unresponsive until later in the day like in the evening, 9:30 in the evening. >> reporter: but bradley airport
