lindsay lohan is heading back to a women's prison for a 30-day sentence that starts next week. >> she violated probation by not showing up at a mandatory community service. it's not the only punishment. we have more from los angeles. >> you admit you violated probation by failing to o boy the court. >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: with that, the judge sentenced lindsay lohan to 30 days in jail. she must surrender by november 9th. >> the sentence i'm going to pose is putting the keys to jail in the defendant's hands. >> reporter: lohan will be able to provide all her community service at the l.a. community morgue. she must complete everything by january 9th or face more

problems. she's facing two duis. 300 days in jail hanging over her head. the fifth judge that lohan has faced since her first arrest in 2007 acknowledged the former disney star would only serve a fraction of any sentence because of overcrowding in l.a. county jails. >> on march 29th, probation will convert to nonreporting. >> reporter: lohan seemed compliant as the judge handed down the sentence, hoping this will be her last rush with the law. stephanie stanton, nbc news, los angeles. >> our hollywood headlines continue in a minute. kim kardashian has a message to her fans. her mom talks about the divorce for the first time today. it's a pivotal day in the

trial of the woman accused of killing her co-worker at a bethesda yoga shop. the prosecution rested after the final witness took the stand. the victim was alive during the entire attack and suffered at least 331 separate injuries. 100 of them were defense wounds. the medical examiner showed nine autopsy photos. at that point, murray's mother and sister got up and left the courtroom. murray was found dead at the shop in bethesda. her co-worker is charged with first degree murder. in an unusual move, the defense lawyers decided not to call any witnesses on her behalf. chris gordon will have the latest coming up on news 4 at 5:00. the herman cain sexual harassment controversy won't go away. in fact, it may be worsening.

a third former employee complained of workplace sexual behavior. today, there was a lively exchange between the gop presidential candidate and reporters after a speaking engagement in alexandria. >> reporter: on day three of herman cain's crisis, he couldn't cut off questions about sexual harassment. >> what did i say? >> excuse me. excuse me. what part of no don't these people understand? >> reporter: cain understands, he could lose his front-runner status. cain is at 30% nationally, romney at 23%, gingrich at 10% and perry at 8%. the 9-9-9 plan was not the main appeal. voters just liked him. now, it's in jeopardy. >> they go to the heart of

trade higher. it came after the fed announced it may reinvest in mortgage backed securities to provide support to the weak housing market. the dow went up 178 points. nasdaq up 33. s&p 500 closed 19 points higher. two retailers filed bankruptcy. sands and basement are going out of business. the company says its struggled with increased competition of other stores with discount deals. they bought the store for $62 million. this time, the store hasn't received favorable bids. they expect to liquidate in time for the holiday season. they plan to close all 46 stores including the store in chevy chase. utility crews are working frantically to restore power to

those who lost power in last week's snowstorm. 500 homes and businesses are still without power in connecticut. new jersey nearly 180,000 sitting in the dark and nearly 3 million people lost power from maryland to maine when the storm struck on saturday. back here, we are going to see a few days without presip. it's nice out there. >> it is. the leaves are starting to pop, too. veronica johnson has the forecast. how are we looking? >> we are looking great. if you spent any time outside today, it was hard to go inside. temperatures in most neighborhoods around 60 degrees. 59 is where we are now with the south wind at 7 miles per hour. so, about the only thing out there currently is high clouds, a few scattered high clouds. 59. meanwhile, morningside and river dale, 61 degrees.

assange is under house arrest in england after fighting extra diction to sweden. authorities want to question him about sex crime allegations. we have the latest from the appeals court in london. >> reporter: today in london, wikileaks founder julian assange faces allegations of sexual misconduct. two young women accused him of having unwelcome, unprotected sex with them for four days when he was staying at their apartmen apartments. he says he's been charged with no crime. he calls it accusations lies and a political conspiracy. >> no doubt, there will be many attempts made to try to spin these proceedings as they occur today. they are technical. >> reporter: he was arrested in

britain on this swedish warrant about a year ago. he's been staying at a friend's mansion under a house arrest. now, he will be extradited to sweden unless he appeals within two weeks time. his lawyer did not say whether or not they would file the appeal and if they did so, under what grounds. back to you. the pilot of the polish airliner that was forced to land yesterday with no wheels is being hailed a hero. he's talking about the ordeal for the first time. the plane with 230 passengers on board landed on its belly at warsaw airport. the pilot felt a huge relief once he learned all the passengers evacuated the plane safely. he's glad it was a success, he says every pilot would have done the same thing. he keeps wondering if he could have done a better job. passengers on board said the

landing was so smooth they thought the wheels were down. celebrities and politicians converged on capitol hill concerned about the welfare of circus animals. bob barker was among the animal advocates in d.c. today. a new bill was introduced to restrict the use of exotic animals such as elephants and tigers. it's a traveling exotic animal act. barker supports the bill. >> how did they train them? they have to dominate the animal. how do they dominate the animal? they beat it with clubs, fists, ax handles, they shock it with all sorts of electric devices. they use bull hooks on them. they deprive them of food and even water in order to make them do these tricks.

the use of service dogs is grog all over the world. in the uk, there's a blind dog with a service dog. lily is a great dane. a medical condition took her sight when she was a puppy. her companion is a great dane. madison serves as lily's eyes. they were taken to a shelter last summer when their owners could no longer care for them. they are so connected, neither dog would do as well on their own.

>> reporter: the shopping cart plunged from a walk way in new york's harlem neighborhood. four stories up, on top of a woman. she was shopping for halloween candy for underprivileged children. her 13-year-old son by her side, but unhurt was hysterical as his mother was rushed to the hospital. the two 12-year-old boys live in local public housing and from troubled families. the boys were horsing around and told police they did not see marian hedges below. >> horrendous what these kids do on halloween. >> reporter: hedges husband rushed back from overseas to be by her side. he told the new york post, he doesn't know if his wife will fully recover. it's too early to tell with neurological issues. we are hopeful.
