bad to worse. >> don't even bother asking me all of these other questions that you all are curious about. okay? don't even bother. >> reporter: but when reporters persist -- >> excuse me. excuse me. what part of no don't people understand? >> reporter: the third woman to come forward also is an employee of the national restaurant association when cain was ceo in the 1990s. she told the associated press she considered filing a complaint against cain for aggressive and unwanted behavior but did not. cain calls it a baseless allegation. >> mr. cain has never committed any harassment, period, end of story. >> reporter: but nbc news has confirmed a third woman did complain to others about cain's conduct. that's in addition to the two women who officially accused cain of improper sexual conduct and received financial settlements. what's more, a former consultant to the restaurant association,

chris wilson, now says he saw cain treat a female employee inappropriately at a crystal city, virginia restaurant. >> i was actually around a couple times where this happened. if she does go on the air and talk about it i think it'll be the end of his campaign. >> reporter: wilson is a supporter of governor rick perry. the cain camp now blames the entire political firestorm on perry's campaign claiming a perry adviser leaked the initial story, which triggered all this. >> the actions of the perry campaign are despicable. rick perry and his campaign owe herman cain and his family an apology. >> reporter: a perry spokesman called the charge both reckless and false. cain's campaign manager called on all cain's accusers to stop hiding behind anonymity. >> i would challenge anybody that has these statements to be made to come forward with the person making the statements. face mr. cain. >> but joel bennett the lawyer for a woman who said she wanted

to get her story out now says she has decided to let him do all the talking. she has a life to live and a career and she doesn't want to become another anita hill. bennett says he'll send a statement with his client's version of events to the national restaurant association today, hoping the group agrees it does not violate her nondisclosure agreement. it will not go into minute details of the incidents with cain, he says, because it's unpleasant and sensational and she does not want to do that. ann? >> all right. lisa meyers this morning. thank you for your reporting. we have the chairman of the republican committee. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> i'm okay. >> great. >> how is the party and how is herman cain's candidacy? let me ask you straight out. can herman cain's candidacy for president survive the claims of harassment from three women and now also this eyewitness? >> well, i mean, it depends on the versety veracity of the co.

primaries are tough and i happen to believe primaries are good for the party. i think when you have the horsepower on your side of the aisle like we have on the republican side they work. you know, i come from wisconsin and, you know, we have a new governor there that you know very well by the name of scott walker. he came through a very tough primary. they work and, by the way, you look at barack obama and hillary clinton, they fought it out all the way through the end of june before a national convention. guess what? it worked out pretty well. he took a super majority to congress, a 60-vote majority to the senate. >> let me interrupt you and ask you. what is happening here seems to be something else. there seems to be an intraparty conflict. a rivalry. kind of almost a serious feud. you've got -- which do you believe? do you believe cain is right in pointing the finger at the perry campaign or do you think the perry campaign is being honest in saying it had nothing to do with this leak? >> listen, i'm not going to get in the middle of it. it's not my job to be the

referee. >> you are the head of the rnc however. in some ways you are. >> well, yeah. of course i'm the head of the rnc but as part of the rnc we don't pick winners and losers in presidential elections. my job, ann, is to make sure we have a republican national committee that's ready to go and we have a nominee. my job is to make sure that we put a good nominee on the ballot and that we defeat barack obama and save this country from an economy that is just not ontrack. that's really what americans want. who that nominee is going to be is anybody's guess. >> does the scandal, interrupting you, i know it's bad behavior but let me get these questions in, do you think this scandal has affected your party's ability to unseat barack obama? >> absolutely not. i mean, if you look at the polling, and you look at where americans are at in this, in this country, they, number one, believe by 80% this country is on the wrong track. they believe that this president hasn't delivered on his promises, and guess what?

the president came to america. the president came to us as the great uniter. now he is out campaigning as the great divider, pitting everyone against everybody, republican versus democrats, rich versus poor. the economy couldn't be in any worse shape than it is right now. and, you know, i think americans are ready for a change. that, we know, is a constant. this issue and other issues are going to come and go but at the end of the day, americans are not going to believe that this president delivered on his promises or that the economy is in any better shape today than it was four years ago. it's worse. >> let's get back to the issue at hand. specifically now you know the perry campaign is also pointing the finger at the romney campaign. let me get your rules of the road here. >> i didn't even know that. so you're telling me information. there you go. >> a lot of this broke over the last 24 hours. let me get your rules of the road as an rnc chair. if a rival campaign did leak

this, does this cross the line in terms of the party and how things are done and not done? >> you know, i don't think so. i mean -- first of all, i don't know what's true and what's not. it's not our job to be the sherlock -- we're not the sherlock holmes of the presidential primary field. we've got 21 candidates that filed in new hampshire. what we are, are people who are trying to put the party together to rebuild our republican national committee, to get prepared for a president who is campaigning nonstop all the time, raising money every single night. we're going to be prepared with a nominee that's intelligent, articulate, and can earn the trust of the american people, to save this economy from a president who hasn't delivered and who just continues to give speeches but doesn't follow through. that's really where we're at in this country. >> republican national committee

chairman, i'm sorry we're out of time but we really appreciate you joining us this morning. >> you bet. thank you, ann. it is 7:09. here is matt. president obama arrived in france this morning for a world economic summit, a meeting dominated by talk of a potential economic catastrophe in greece. what happens there could affect your pocketbook in a very big way. cnbc's live in athens this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. there have been major developments here in greece in the last couple hours. the prime minister has lost his majority in parliament with three deputies defecting. also earlier on today his finance minister has publicly broken ranks with him. this is a major blow to the prime minister. all of this is a direct response to the prime minister's decision to call a referendum on greece's membership in the euro zone. this is important. the prime minister may fall by the end of the day, and if he

falls, the referendum he has called for is obviously at risk. if he keeps his job though, yes, the referendum can go through, but it could still have major consequences for the global economy. greece is the cradle of western civilization, the birthplace of democracy. but now its financial problems and a controversial national referendum threaten the global economy. for a year and a half greece has been on brink of defaulting on its $452 billion debt, a possibility some feel could set off a domino effect with other troubled countries and lead to the breakup of the european union, one of the major economic powers in the world and one on which the u.s. heavily depends. >> worst case scenario is greece defaults. a european bank collapses, goes bankrupt, and the whole system seizes up and people are nervous to lend to one another.

>> reporter: last week the leadership devised a plan to bail out the greek economy. the u.s. market responded to the deal with bullish confidence. >> the markets around the world are surging. >> reporter: but to meet the eu's plan greece has to take severe action raising taxes and drastically reducing government benefits, so-called austerity measures. they've met fierce resistance on greek streets. in a move to shore up political support for the harsh requirements, the greek prime minister surprised the european union by putting their bailout proposal to a national vote, prompting international fears. >> for americans, the stock market is the biggest worry, particularly if people own financial stocks. they sell off right away when there is fear like this. >> reporter: the eyes of the financial world will remain fixed on where democracy began.

gas at protesters after they took over an abandoned building and started a large bonfire in the downtown area. a number of arrests were made as police continued to have a very large presence in downtown. overnight thousands of occupy protesters shut down the port of oakland, entrances blocked, delivery trucks turned away, demonstrators successful in bringing the nation's fifth largest port to a standstill. >> enough people came out here and just stopped traffic that the port couldn't operate. >> reporter: oakland's day-long citywide strike wednesday may have been the largest demonstration here since the vietnam war. all day an estimated 7,000 poured through city streets. >> this is the beginnings of a revolution. >> reporter: the occupy movement a rally against what protesters call the unequal distribution of wealth and power. teachers marched with nurses. >> health care is a right, a human right. >> reporter: parents protested

with children. >> people need a lot more power in our society and the 99% aren't getting the power. the 1% are. >> reporter: but this morning downtown oakland certainly has a much different look. dozens of protesters remain in this area and they are matched by dozens of police officers still in their riot gear. natalie? >> all right. be watching what happens there today, miguel almaguer in oakland, california. thank you. some terrifying new video of the moment a tug boat slammed a barge into a packed tourist boat in philadelphia last year killing two hungarian students onboard. tug boat pilot matthew devlin was sentenced this week to one year in prison for the 2010 crash. he had pleaded guilty to being distracted by his cell phone while steering. good news to report about the conjoined twins separated earlier this week at stanford. the 2-year-old girls are recovering nicely after their risky, ten-hour surgery.

sunny and chilly weekend to that's your latest weather, ann. >> okay. thank you. it's back to jail next week for lindsay lohan, or is it? a zblunlg los angeles sentenced lohan to 30 days in jail for violating her parole but how much time if any will she actually have to serve? nbc's george lewis is at the jail in lynwood, california to explain why. george, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann. it isn't part of her court-ordered community service, but lindsay lohan is actually providing a civics lesson here because california's prisons are badly overcrowded the system has been shipping serious felons back to county jails like this one. so to accommodate them, misdemeanor offenders like lohan, are quickly shuffled in and out of here. >> are you sober? >> reporter: conservatively atired in a polka dot dress, lohan waived her right to a court hearing on probation violations, accused of failing to show up for community service and court-ordered psychological counseling. >> do you admit that you violated probation by failing to

obey all orders of the court? >> yes, your honor. >> with respect to both things the city attorney represented? >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: with that, the judge pronounced sentence. >> you're to serve 30 days in the county jail now. you are to surrender within one week. >> reporter: but the sheriff's office tells nbc news that because of overcrowding, lohan will likely spend at most one night in jail. >> the judge is going to give you whatever the judge is going to give you and the sheriff is going to release you because they don't have room for misdemeanors. >> reporter: she still has to do community service at the county morgue closely monitored by the court each month until the end of march. the judge cautioned lohan, who has 2,615,000 twitter followers not to post items about the morgue. >> they seem to have an issue with your tweeting. i can't order you to stop tweeting but if it's one of their rules that you don't tweet about them, don't tweet about them. >> what is your comment, lindsay? talk to us please.

7:30 now on a thursday morning. it's the 3rd of november, 2011. great day in our neck of the woods. a little chilly but it's going to warm up nicely in the new york area. inside studio 1-a i'm matt lauer alongside ann curry. coming up in just a moment a disturbing videotape showing a young woman being beaten by her father. she recently posted it online. although it was shot seven years ago, her father is a texas judge. we're going to talk to the daughter and her mom in just a little bit. as we've been reporting, matt, these allegations against gop front runner herman cain, serious allegations of behaving inappropriately with women who worked for him. it has a lot of people asking let's talk about what actually is harassment. we'll get to that and also help you understand if it's happening, if you've experienced it yourself. and also this morning, kim

kardashian has now started answering questions for the first time about the end of her marriage and whether or not it was a stunt for her tv show. >> all right. let us begin this half hour with that incredibly disturbing story out of texas, video of a father repeatedly hitting his father with a belt. he is a judge. and a warning. this is very difficult to watch. we'll talk to the judge's daughter exclusively in a moment but first we go live to rock port, texas with the story. janet, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. it bears repeating. this video is graphic, disturbing, difficult to watch, and has taken the internet by storm. more than 1.6 million views on youtube, most within the last 24 hours. a texas judge here in rockport, aransas county, repeatedly whipping his teenage daughter with a leather strap even as she was crying and pleading with him to stop. >> get over here. >> reporter: the man in this video is texas judge william

adams and the girl is his then 16-year-old daughter who has cerebral palsy. >> bend over that bed. bend over the bed. >> well -- >> bend over the bed! >> stop. stop. >> reporter: the beating continues on the legs for most of the seven-minute video that has swept the internet and provoked an online outcry. again and again hillary adams cries out after being lashed by her father's belt on her legs, her arms, and her buttocks. once at the hands of her mother. >> you turn over, i'm going to spank on your butt. you turn over like a 16-year-old and take it. like a grown woman. turn over. >> reporter: the disturbing scene was captured seven years ago in her bedroom, hillary says. after her dad found out she has downloaded music from an illegal website. >> are you happy? huh? disobeying your parents? >> stop! >> reporter: after holding onto the video since 2004, hillary, now 23 and living on her own,

uploaded it to youtube after she says her father continued to harass her and she finally had enough. >> the disputes and the harassment were escalating, and finally it just was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back and i told him i had the video and he brushed it off. >> reporter: william adams isn't just hillary's father. he's a judge in south texas where he routinely rules on cases involving children. he also sits on a county board overseeing the juvenile system. he admits that's him in the video. >> no, in my mind i haven't done anything wrong other than discipline my child after she was caught stealing and i did lose my temper but i've since apologized. it looks worse than it is. there is a story. it'll come out in due time. okay? >> and it's because she downloaded a game onto your computer? >> no. she was stealing -- i don't want to get into it. okay? but there was a reason she was being disciplined. >> reporter: but as a family's private feud went public and viral, outrage has boiled over.

facebook pages have sprung up decrying judge adams. the texas commission on judicial conduct has been flooded with demands he be removed from the bench. in tiny rock port, police have been swamped by calls from all over the world. the chief has opened an investigation a at the district attorney's request to determine whether the beating was criminal. when does it cross the line? when does discipline within a family become assault? >> frequently that's a difficult thing to determine because by state law a person has a right to discipline their children to a point, but not to the point that you cause serious bodily injury to a child. >> reporter: hillary's mother has since divorced him and apologized for her role in the beating. for his part judge adams insists his daughter wasn't hurt. >> i lost my temper. i spanked her. her mother was there. she wasn't hurt. it was a long time ago. >> reporter: do you acknowledge the beating was excessive, the spanking? the discipline? >> no. i'm not going to get into any of that. okay? >> reporter: police say judge

adams has left rockport and a note outside the courthouse informs his hearings have been canceled. >> i ought to keep beating you and beating you. >> stop. stop. >> reporter: a daughter's disclosure as a family's private troubles go public. authorities tell nbc news that for a charge such as bodily injury to a child the statute of limitations is five years. this video is seven years old so it is likely no charges will be filed. as for judge adams' seat here on the bench county officials tell me when the judge does return for any cases involving children, a visiting judge is going to handle those at least for now. matt? >> thank you very much. hillary and haley adams are here for an exclusive interview. good morning to both of you. >> good morning, matt. >> we only showed a little portion of that tape. it goes on for seven very long minutes. we showed it in our newsroom yesterday to people who have seen an awful lot of tough things. they were universelyuniverselya

by this. as you watch it seven years later what goes through your mind? >> i've experienced everything from crying about it to almost just laughing. i've experienced so many emotions and sometimes it's like reliving it and sometimes it's like watching it from a completely third person point of view. it's just really impossible to put all of that into words. >> families in this country struggle with the dilemma of punishing and discipline all the time, to spank or not spank. i think the belt thing seems to cross a line. but was this something that happened regularly in your house? is that why you set that camera up in the room that night? >> it did happen regularly for a period of time, and i could tell because of the pattern that things were escalating again, so i set up my video camera on the dresser and covered the little red light with a scarf. about half an hour after i set the camera up this happened. and it was amazing that i was able to capture such a thing. >> why did you wait seven years? you've had this video.

you clearly are as upset about it today as you were back then. why did you wait seven years? why release it on the internet as opposed to going to authorities with it? >> well, i waited seven years because back then i was still a minor and living under his roof and releasing it then would have, i don't know what would have happened to me or my mother or my little sister so waiting until today seven years later has enabled me to pull away and be able to distance myself from the consequences. >> you released a note accompanying the video, quote, judge william adams is not fit to be anywhere near the law system if he can't even exercise fit judgment as a parent himself. do not allow this man to ever be re-elected again. he is not up for re-election right now. i don't think that comes for three years. again, the timing of this is in question. why? >> it just was like i said in that previous video. it was the straw that broke the camel's back. it wasn't any, you know, huge happening or anything. i just told him i had the video and he didn't seem to think anything of it. and basically dared me to post

it. >> do you want him to lose his job? >> i think wishing anybody to lose their job is not a really good thing to kao bdo but -- >> because of the public outcry there is a chance he may be forced to step down even if no criminal charges are filed against him. >> his being fit for the job is something i can't really say that he is. >> haley, let me turn to you because you're in this tape. >> yes. >> we heard nu there saying, turn over. take it like a 16-year-old girl. >> yes. >> i mean, how does a mother not only stand by and watch her husband do that to her daughter but take part in it? >> that's a good question and that's what i had to ask myself. i didn't know about the video until, well, this past april. and this past weekend was the first time i saw it. my answer to you and to the world is something that i've been hiding for a very long time is a family secret and that's addiction. >> addiction on your part? >> no, sir. >> on his part?

but if you're sitting around and telling sexual jokes in a group setting or if there's alcohol involved and somebody is dancing and doing the little dirty dancing, those kinds of things start to make us move the line. >> especially in a work place which is the issue. >> exactly. >> i'll move on to one more question before i get to you, steve. herman cain specifically in this particular case when people hear about this $35,000 settlement, they think, okay. that must be a smoking gun. what does it mean to you? >> in reality it does not mean as much. steve and i were chatting about this. from a corporate environment setting, under $50,000, which is a low level, five-figure settlement, is often considered a nuisance. get rid of it. because my lawyers are going to cost me more. >> not in a presidential campaign. this is the part for me. i defer to star on the legal issues, but herman cain's brand, his only brand, because he is an unknown is i'm an outsider, nonpolitician. as soon as he gets confronted, i know nothing about this. then he says oh, you meant settlement?

i was talking about agreement. well why don't you allow us to see the information, mr. cain? all of a sudden he says, well, there are legal issues. here is the problem with herman cain from a communication, pr, branding point of view. he can't be the candidate he is today, and to his credit he has risen to the top of this field as an unknown and all of a sudden decided he is going to be clintonesque in parcing words. he deceived. he lied, in my opinion, and i'm not saying it's not a big -- you say it's not a big deal. in the corporate world i agree. you run for president as an unknown you are done if you don't handle this well. >> the key really it seems to me is about women voters. >> oh, yes. >> more than that. >> but women's -- women voters are really key here because i don't really frankly know a woman in the work place who has not at one point in her career felt uncomfortable, felt a hostile environment, has not felt sasexually harassed so doe herman cain's wife have to get out in front? >> but we've seen so many things like this happen. i'd just like to take us back to

person -- we make a date. right? we'll have dinner. do you call that person and say by the way, before we meet for dinner i am going to run a complete background search on you just to make everything -- make sure everything is okay? >> it's about what is right for you. if you feel more comfortable letting that person know you've researched them that is fine. if you don't want to you don't have to. you are just making sure you're prepared. >> robbie better safe than sorry pops into my mind. >> sure. >> what else pops into my mind is this idea when you meet someone one of the nice things about developing a relationship is slowly learning about that person. >> right. you don't want to show up at a date like you're arresting somebody with some handcuffs. yes, you want to make yourself comfortable, but in some cases what you're researching you'll never find, whether a person can be the right mate for you, whether they're capable of intimacy. and then what do you do once you find out information that you really may not know how to make sense out of? what if you fine something online that was true five years ago? we don't know who the person is

sitting in front of us. so, yes. you don't have the advantage of being within a community like the old days where you can ask your best friend what this guy is like. >> right. >> so do your due diligence but he can't tell you everything. >> maria do you think people will be surprised at how much information they can find about average people? i think you can go on and find about celebrities but about average people? >> there's tons of information online about you, about me, about everybody. it's from your address to your phone number to, there is this website spy dialer that you actually type in somebody's cell phone number and you can dial in right to their voice mail. you can hear their voice, their message. >> now you're starting to creep me out a little bit. what does it tell us not about the person you're searching about but the person doing the searching? do they lack trust? >> well, they may lack trust. they might be a little paranoid. they may not believe there are good men or women out there who want a relationship. the fact is there are good people who want true intimacy.

through this journey of disappointment and wonder. >> thank you. that is the nicest thing you could say to a pair of writers. >> we're learning about her too. >> she is very much inspired by my daughter hope and hope is every bit a princess in training. >> and a little bit of a diva sometimes. but a delicious one. >> a wonderful girl. >> there she is. >> and she is in a little ballet company called hampton ballet theater company. and this story was loosely modeled after that. >> don't tell me she sings as well. >> she does, ann. lovely. we want some of that. >> and she plays piano. >> she has a lovely voice. it's true and on pitch and she sings all day long which we've incorporated into the book. >> a lot of what you incorporate into the book is this idea of finding your inner sparkle. right? >> yes. >> i think this is interesting not just for children but for all of us. how -- what is your sense about how we can all find our inner sparkle? how do we encourage it in our children? >> i think it's just by listening and watching them very carefully and picking up

exactly, hopefully at the right moment, on something that they say they love or want to do and giving them the kind of dignity of being an equal. i don't think i ever talked down to the kids very much. >> no, never. >> she didn't talk down to you ever? >> maybe once in a while. >> really. >> and we try very hard not to talk down to kids in the books that we write, too. it's terribly important to respect them and to give them the dignity to stretch up. >> actually the first and second book of being repurposed with new covers for this christmas. they'll be coming out this christmas. there is a third in the series coming out in april which, in fact, is going to coincide with something we've been working on for a long time, which is national princess week. very fairy princess week. >> the tenth anniversary of "the princess diaries." >> exactly right. everything quite happily has come together. the corporation has expressed a wonderful interest in joining us

♪ i want to rock 'n roll all night ♪ legendary band kiss has had fans rocking and rolling for nearly 40 years but former guitarist ace frehley says when the makeup came off sometimes the back stage drama would begin. he writes about that, the band's rise to worldwide fame, his own struggles with drugs and alcohol, and his eventual departure from kiss in his new book called "no regrets, a rock 'n roll memoir." good to have you here. >> great to be here. >> i think anybody who watched kiss over the years, probably the thought crossed their mind that you guys dabbled in drugs a little bit when they got to see you. >> a little bit. >> just a bit. how big a part of the band's existence was it? >> it wasn't so much paul or gene. mostly me and peter were the bad guys when it came to that. but, you know, over the years it escalated and, luckily, i caught

it in time and, you know, today i'm five years sober. you know, every day above ground is a good day. >> is a good day. you dabbled with drugs as a kid. when you got to a rock band -- >> not so much as a kid. it was more alcohol when i was a kid. >> did you feel when you got to a rock band it was in some ways expected of you, it was just part of the scene? >> well, it was a big part of the scene. i mean, you got to realize, you know, studio 54 and the whole scene of manhattan in the '70s a lot of people were doing cocaine. you know? most people were doing it openly. >> and i don't want to make light of the addiction because it took a toll and is a very serious subject but you do write something that caught my attention in this. you guys actually developed a code name for cocaine. do you want to share it with our viewers? >> we called it betty white. you know? >> why would you pick on poor betty white? >> if i was going to a partied' call my buddy and say is betty going to be there and if he said

she said yes then we know what would be there. >> she is the personification of good. >> it is the perfect name. she is such a great lady. and i just love her to death. >> you write a lot in the book about your relationship with gene simmons. obviously your band mate. it was an up-and-down relationship. what was the source of the tension when the tension existed? >> i made those guys very nervous. there were times they thought i'd never make it on stage to finish the show or even begin a show but somehow some way i always ended up, you know, coming through. a lot of people think there was a love/hate relationship going on with me and gene. it appears that way more to the people outside looking in but, you know, me and gene actually have a good relationship. i had lunch with him at the beverly hills hotel about five weeks ago. >> but you do write, you call him a loner. you question whether he had a sex addiction. >> true. >> you say he tried to rewrite kiss's history by downplaying your contributions to the band? >> absolutely. >> have you talked to him about that? >> no. >> why not?

you had lunch with him a month ago. >> but i wanted to keep it light. i haven't seen him since we received the vh 1 rock honors award. i just wanted to re-establish communication because it had been five years and just let him know that i'm clean and sober and i just kind of want to wipe the slate clean and, you know, look toward the future. >> i also got the sense that you felt gene simmons was more about commercializing the band. >> very business like. >> and you seem to want to be more in the rock 'n roll art for art's sake. >> one of the reasons i left the band was i got into rock 'n roll because here i am. you get paid for something you love to do. it wasn't fun anymore, it was time to go. toward the end it wasn't fun anymore. >> gene simmons gave us a statement when we reached out to him. he said we love ace and wish him the best. sobriety isn't easy and he needs to surround himself with people who care enough about him to be tough on him. ace will win. i know it. >> hell of a guy.

>> you're talking in the book about how some of your shows after a while became less about being free wheeling, spontaneous rock concert and became more like broadway shows. you even talk about how choreographed they became and they were dangerous after a while thenchts had while. >> they had to be choreographed because we had smoke bombs and flash pots and all sorts of stuff so if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time you get blown up literally. >> you get your head blown off. you were supposed to be there. that's why you got a flash pot in the head. >> gene's hair went on fire a couple times. >> you hated playing the song "i was made for loving you." why? >> my wrist used to cramp up. i played that chug-a chug-a and my wrist is ready to fall off. plus it had a disco feel to it. i was never a big disco guy. >> when you look back, every kid or a lot of kids dream of being rock stars. you've lived it. now extricated yourself from it. was it everything you expected

it would be? >> everything and more. but, you know, there was also a dark side to it and a lot of that had to do with my addictions. but luckily, you know, i was able to conquer my demons. i'm excited about being an author. >> are you kidding? after all these years. >> from guitar guy to author. >> ace frehley, great to see you. >> thank you so much. >> good to have you here. you'll be back with hoda and kathie lee in the fourth hour. the book is called "no regrets, a rock 'n roll memoir." up next, our top chef whips up some sloppy joes. we'll head upstairs for that. first, this is "today" on nbc. state farm. this is jessica.

this morning in "today's kitchen" a lighter, healthier version of an old classic, sloppy joes, easy as 1, 2, 3. the recipe is easy on your waist line and your budget we're told. we have the host of bravo's hit show "top chef" which is hitting the road and heading to texas for its ninth season. good morning. >> good morning. >> you still having fun on "top chef?" >> i am. this time the season is much bigger, there are more chefs. we have two extra episodes and we move every week and then that i think put an extra level of tension and anticipation into the competition for the contestants. it's a great season. we're in texas and we go to dallas and austin and san

antonio. >> okay. that sounds like a busy schedule. >> it was. >> this morning you're saving us some money with this lovely comfort food. >> yes. >> you make it in a lighter way. let me ask if your daughter likes this lighter version. >> actually i make a version that is vegetarian for her because she doesn't eat turkey or meat yet. >> but she does like sloppy joes? >> she loves sloppy joes. she gets sloppy no matter what she eats. >> how old is she now? >> she is 20 months. >> a baby. >> that is the good thing about this recipe is we're going to make it today with turkey and basically i've just sauteed some onions, garlic, and bell pepper. once that kind of browns slightly i'm adding turkey meat. now, this is a pound of meat. instead of making it with beef or pork i'm adding 12 ounces of turkey meat and four ounces of beef. here's why. it's healthier but it's also, with the four ounces of beef, you still get a little bit of the luxuriousness and richness

of red meat. what i would suggest is i've slowly -- you start cutting back on that beef. go to three ounces and two ounces. cheaper cuts of meat like chuck are very flavorful and chuck is about $4 a pound. and so for $1 you can just add four ounces and you'll get, you know, you can ask your butcher to grind it up. it gives you a little bit of that richness of beef. but it also, you know, is much more healthy. you can add cauliflower, beans, lentils. the sloppy joe is a perfect place to add all kinds of vegetables and sneak them in for your family. you can keep stirring that up. >> this is what you've got here. >> this is bround. >> you used some herbs in here. >> i did. this is oregeno, red chile and -- >> just dump it all in.

you want this a little spicy because it goes between two pieces of bread. >> just stir that up. i'm adding plum tomatoes and then i've dissolved a little six-ounce portion of tomato paste in two cups of hot water. you know how when you add tomato paste to something it is always hard to mix up because it's so thick? the way i get rid of that problem is just dissolve it in some water which you'll need for this anyway. and then basically all you do is let this cook down, add some pepper and some salt. and stir. again, to this you can add kale. >> kale? >> wow. >> yeah. here we have a carrot and coriander salad which is really easy and an alternative to the rich cole slaws laden with mayonnaise. i'm adding sesame seed. zatchaw powder, a middle eastern seasoning that has oregeno and thyme and sumac which grows in

>> wasn't sure where that was going for a second. but we are happy to have that segment. let's go inside. natalie is standing by at the news desk with all the headlines. good morning to you all once again. a third woman is now accusing republican presidential candidate herman cain of inappropriate behavior. the woman says she considered filing a complaint against cain over sexually suggestive remarks and gestures when she worked with him back at the national restaurant association. cain calls the allegation baseless. similar accusations from two other women led to financial settlements in the late 1990s. police and protesters clashed again during the night in oakland, california. police in riot gear used tear gas and flash bang grenades after protesters started a large bonfire in the middle of a downtown street and threw rocks and bottles according to police. on wednesday, the occupy oakland demonstrators shut down one of the nation's busiest shipping ports. new figures today show first-time claims for

unemployment fell by 9,000 last week to the lowest level in five weeks. meantime the labor department says unemployment rates fell in about 3/4 of large u.s. cities in october and fed chairman ben bernanke is predicting the economy will improve over time. the labor department released its october unemployment numbers tomorrow. the death toll has risen to at least 29 from the recent listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupes. at least 139 people in 29 states have been sickened in one of the deadliest food-borne illness outbreaks ever in the u.s. and today closing arguments begin in the involuntary manslaughter trial of michael jackson's doctor, conrad murray. if convicted he faces up to four years behind bars and the loss of his medical license. a california judge on wednesday sentenced lindsay lohan to 30 days in jail for violating her parole, but just how much time if any will she actually have to serve? nbc's george lewis is at the jail in lynwood, california.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. lindsay lohan won't have to spend much time in jail at all. why? because state prisons are overcrowded in california, so they've been shipping their serious felons back to the county jails meaning that misdemeanor offenders like lohan are quickly shuffled in and out of here. >> are you sober? >> reporter: conservatively atired in a polka dot dress, lohan waived her right to a court hearing on probation violations, accused of failing to show up for community service and court ordered psychological counseling. >> do you admit you violated probation by failing to obey all orders of the court with respect to both things that the city attorney represented? >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: and with that the judge pronounced sentence. >> you are to serve 30 days in the county jail now. you are to surrender within one week. >> reporter: but the sheriff's office tells nbc news that because of overcrowding lohan will likely spend at most one

woods.. >> we have sunshine, and the sky watcher camera looking off to the west northwest and we have gorgeous autumn color now. temperatures are climbing into the 40s throughout much of the region, and later today it will continue to climb into the low and mid-60s. and then we might have a shower and during the afternoon the sun returns with a gusty wind, and chilly, dry and that's your latest weather. tamron? >> al, thanks so much. this morning on "today's money" credit versus debit cards. just this week bank of america backed down from a controversial monthly debit card fee but banks are still looking for ways to bring in more money. one way is by offering credit cards. msnbc financial analyst vera gibbons is here to give me some advice on what to look out for. good to see you. it's kind of like we fought the law and the law won but in this case consumers won against the banks in that the banks backed down from this. however, we wonder if there are other ways for them to charge us. >> that's it.

banks stand to lose over $6.5 billion because of these new regulations that limit what they can charge merchants every time a consumer uses their debit card to make a purchase. right? so got to make up for the lost revenue somehow. they had originally planned on making up some of it with the debit card charge. that didn't go over so well. we're not having that now. so you're going to see sort of sneakier ways, more subtle ways, and the consumer will ultimately pay the price somehow some way over time. >> what is the likely route they will go? i know you say sneaky and subtle but what should we specifically look out for? >> they could do any number of things. they could raise minimum balance requirements, raise interest rates on credit cards, bundle services and sell them. one trend we're really seeing is a push toward the credit cards. trying to make more people sign up for credit cards. right? so credit card offers have risen nearly 100% since 2009. >> that would be the next strategy you think, try to get a consumer to switch over from debit card to credit card, which would mean i guess more interest

that the bank can charge? >> they can make money any number of ways because they can make them at the point of purchase, the swipe fees as far as credit goes. that hasn't been tampered with as it has with debit. and they can make money also just by the fact that so many consumers do carry a balance, the average household has about $15,000 in credit card debt right now. we're paying interest on that. that is incremental income for the banks which is why you're seeing 59% of households getting at least one offer a month from the credit card companies trying to get them to sign up. >> so if 59% are getting one offer, are people signing up? are credit cards more popular these days than debit cards? >> they used to be. in 2008 debit card usage really ticked up because people were trying to conserve their cash. they didn't want to go over. they were really trying to work on the budget. so now we see about 188 million debit card users versus 183 million credit card users. >> that's close though. >> the banks would like to sort of turn that around. what they're doing is offering these enticing offers and scaling back on the debit card

rewards or eliminating programs all together and offering better cash back programs, mileage rewards for signing up and even bonus points for signing up for a credit card. this is the trend we've been seeing for sometime definitely over the course of a year. >> those are the things they're using to hook the consumer in to at least make the credit cards more enticing during the financial times. >> to try to get them to sign on. not everybody should have course. the best offers are going to be reserved for those with the best credit in the 747, 50 range. people like the perks and protections credit cards offer. it is the easiest way to build and establish credit. certain people might want to consider a credit card offer and other people forget it. >> we were looking at some of the advantages of having a credit card but what are the obvious disadvantages? >> interest rates. right? >> yes. >> this is high. >> are they still 20 plus percent? >> they can be. the low end might be 10%, 15%, 29%. so that's the primary disadvantage. i think also if you're not disciplined, you run into late fees.

you run into penalties, over your limit penalties. it can really snowball. you'll pay fees on all of that stuff and then in the process your credit score will take hits. these are not for everybody. >> so much of this obviously is you doing your home work. i know there are a lot of websites out these days that can help you figure out credit versus debit. >> you really have to take a look at your situation and find a card that is going to fit your lifestyle. obviously you want to find a card that is going to give you the maximum number of points based on what your primary purchases are. >> right. >> so it does take time to figure it out. you'll look at sites like low cards, card ratings, credit land. you can do a side by side comparison and find out which is the card that is best for you and your spending habits. >> if you don't want to dive into the credit card necessarily a lot of people are talking about changing your bank, moving from the so-called big bank to a credit union or community bank that might be more inclined to give you a loan if you so need. >> a kinder, gentler experience all around. if you look at a credit union they've become much more accessible lately, much less restrictive. they're out there. you can find one by going --

>> they have to compete for your money and time. >> they're offering higher rates on deposits, lower rates on loans, they don't nickel and dime you the way the big banks do. the average consumer saves about $70 a year. >> really. wow. >> just overall they offer like i said the kinder, gentler experience. people are switching to these types of institutions as well as sort of the direct banks, online banks, as you mentioned small community banks, regional banks as well. >> what about the big bank transfer day? i know a lot of folks of the occupy wall street movement are promoting this where do you think this will happen? it's supposed to be on saturday. >> something like 40,000 people like this on facebook so there's definitely a lot of hype. i don't think as many people will transfer over as we initially expected because the banks have removed that very controversial monthly debit card fee. you'll still see people take action and move their money elsewhere. it is just a process. people are loathe to do it. >> a lot of good information. thank you very much. up next feeding your family on a budget. joy bauer has healthy and affordable food options in her

lot of healthy, low cost items people can take advantage of. first, canned and dried beans and lentils are terrific high quality proteins. when it comes to produce i always encourage people to buy what is in season and look for promotional sales and think things like apples, oranges, bananas, sweet and white potatos, cabbage and squash. year round they're typically at a great cost that work within every budget. take advantage of frozen. frozen fruits and vegetables are just as healthy as the fresh counterparts and you can freeze them for months and months and months. so there is no waste. a few must have pantry items, large containers of oatmeal versus the single packets. low sodium canned supers, whole grain pastas, whole wheat bread. when it comes to dairy there are so many terrific brands that are competing to get that sale so you can really find things that have great promotions and then compare that brand to the

generic store brand and whichever clocks in at the lowest price wins and gets a spot in your cart. so people just need to be strategic and you really can eat well afford bli. >> all right. kelly, thank you. that is a great question. you have to remember to rotate out the frozen food. my mom had this like permafrost. >> yes. if it has frost bite on it, it is not going to taste good. >> we've got norma joining us on the phone from columbus, ohio. hi, norma. what is your question? >> good morning. i've heard joy say steel cut oats are really healthy and i'd like to try them but they take so long to make. do you have any short cuts to save time? >> yes. the reason that i particularly like steel cut oats is because they have less of an impact on your blood sugar so they're really terrific for diabetics. but they take about 30 minutes to bake which is almost impossible during a hectic morning. so here is what i do. if you have a slow cooker, before you go to bed you'll add one cup of steel cut oats and four cups of water together with fresh fruit or dried fruit.

and set it on a low setting, low heat, for about eight hours. you wake up in the morning and breakfast is ready. another idea is you can make the steel cut oats in advance and you can break it up into single serving portions, freeze it, and then in the morning pop it into the microwave and in a matter of minutes your oatmeal is ready. >> there you go. >> big time saver. >> let's go to a viewer e-mail. this is danielle in los angeles writing, my friends are doing a crazy diet that involves eating only fruit before noon. they're losing weight on the diet but i know there's lots of research showing you should include protein at breakfast. what do you think? >> fruit is great. there is nothing against fruit but there is nothing magical about exclusively only eating fruit that enables you to lose weight faster. the reason her friends are losing weight is because at the end of the day they are reducing their overall calories. no matter what you eat. >> they could eat the fruit later in the day. wouldn't matter. >> right. even though this is working for them we have such great research on protein in the morning helping you to feel energized and focused and enabling you to

every day after that for a week we had professional bloggers that do this all the time, put really cool ideas up where you can see step by step how to make something for just dollars. >> right. and your dress being a perfect example. the dress is probably the priciest part of this but tell me how you got this foil look. >> this was a free dress that i got. >> good. >> i wasn't quite sure if i liked the cut but what i did was i came up with the idea to use one of my favorite techniques, foiling. this is just a couple dollars, literally $2 for the glue, $2 for the foil. you let the glue dry and then you literally just press one of these sheets down. >> you put the glue on the dress in whatever pattern you want. >> you let it dry so it is tacky to the touch. press the foil and then peel off and you are left with whatever design the glue left behind for you. >> it looks great. i guess just dry cleaning or whatever? >> this is washable. machine washable. it's fantastic. >> wow. even better. >> a lot of the other people who submitted ideas for the week, it was made out of a place mat.

expired credit card. >> looks perfect. >> and then this is the idea of using old gift cards that she paints and stamps on and attaches them to ribbon for this really beautiful gift card art. i thought that was cute. >> we've got this nice suede bag made out of what? >> this is a suede purse. and veronica came up with this idea to just literally fold on top, she used a place mat for the inside structure that you can see under here. and she cut the place mat into her form. pieced it together. you glue with some spray adhesive. the suede and the lining inside and attach this from the hardware store. >> great. >> you can make yourself a bag. >> glow in the dark shoes but most importantly the jewelled shoes. she bought labutons at a consignment store and bought about $150 worth of crystals which sounds pricey. she spent two hours every night after work for two months but

gentle giants. >> this gentle giant would you believe is still a puppy? standing at 7'3". >> 2 1/2 inches taller than shaquille o'neal. >> the giants think they're lap dogs and the lop dogs think they're giants. >> reporter: you've adopted out and saved 14,000 dogs, an astronomical number when you consider the size, the condition of these animals. where did your love of these big creatures start? >> we moved here and decided we wanted a big dog. i've been training dogs for 45 years and tracy is an expert trainer too. we rescued the dogs and found out the ones we didn't take were put to death. i asked tracy, look, why don't we take them for a while, couple weeks? we'll find somebody to take this over. >> little did you know. >> reporter: finding homes for the canines big and small is a daunting task which requires obedience from both dog and owner. >> when people come here, not only do we adopt the dog and train the dog, we train the people. we train them how to care for the dog, how to handle the dog.

along with each other. they sleep with each other. they play with each other. they eat together. >> reporter: ward believes the comforts of home can add years to any dog's life. >> dogs need to live inside. we discovered by bringing them in the house and living in the house that added one or two years. we have almost all of our dogs living longer. the environment is so loving and affectionate and nurturing. >> reporter: how many in any given night are actually in your bed with you if you don't mind me getting so personal? >> all of them. >> whoever wants to be. it can get crowded. we're thrilled every single day that we can save a life and help dogs live longer lives. >> and this is my own gentle giant petey. he didn't come from that shelter. he came from animal care and control where we get our bow-to-wow dogs. i have to say the bigger the better. he is a gentle giant. >> he is so beautiful. and how much does this dog weigh? >> 120 pounds. al is sitting kind of far away from him but we should in all full disclosure, you guys have a very special relationship.

what is troubling people is there is always an innate conflict. kim's mom came on to talk about her book but we talked about kim. it just seems to people unseemly to be promoting something while you're going through something chgt. >> we've been friends for a long, long time. i knew this family long before there was any reality show. your friends are your friends. for me, they're your friends forever. you go through a lot of things with one another. i certainly have not appreciated -- agreed with a lot of things they've done, but i still love my friends. i have to ask the tough questions. i think the toughest one is people, there wouldn't be the backlash if somebody had sensed they tried or they're trying or they are going to see a counselor, but it's over? i had marital problems. most people had marital problems.

>> february 4, 1987, i was working a real job as my dad called it hanging above-ground water storage tanks. an electric line with 7,600 volts arced over to the scaffolding and burned both my hands and 28% of my body. i spent the next four months in the north carolina burn center. having started playing the piano at age 3, at age 30 i was leaving with both hands amputated and hooks in their place. a couple of years later a friend called and said they were doing a musical production saying they amputated my hands, not my voice. there in the pit i met the love of my life. we dated two years, fell in love, got married. two years later had a baby together. when the baby was 2, my 34-year-old wife was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. she fought a long and arduous battle but lost the war in 2001 when the baby was 10. these past ten years have probably been the best as i've been mom and dad to a motherless daughter who at age 20 is a senior at miami state university.

i've become the first double-hand amputee to be trained and certified as a private pilot in the u.s. and the only one to be trained as a suba instructor in the world. i started my career back to acting and now as a perform were disabilities had a few roles in tv shows and films. early someone gave me a mug that said, "life is not a dress rehearsal." those six words carry a powerful meaning. we only get to do this once. no matter what or where our stage, this is our one and only performians. >> skrjohn is here with his beautiful daughter whitney. to be with you two is like a comedy act. >> when kath talked about the t-shirt you wore that said, "i'm not really good at pattycake." >> "i suck at pattycake." i feel humor makes everything a good even playing field no matter what your politics or religion. i used humor a lot. i use it a lot in stand-up, also.

>> and in your acting. you just shot a tv thing where you play -- >> i play a dmv examiner on mtv show "awkward." she went to go get her driver's license and i stick my hooks all around in front of her face. she freaks out and does than get her driver's license. >> they do have a lot of prosthetics now. why do you choose to keep the hooks? >> these were invented in the 1940s after world war ii. it's basically the keep it simple, stupid. it's the easiest, the most light weight. i scuba dive. a lot of electronics aren't waterproof. they work good under water. >> some write read said your mom and friends had much, much more difficult time with all of this than you did. >> it is. i go back to the burn center in chapel hill. i visit a lot of hospitals in cincinnati and work with new amputees. i end up talking more to the families than i do to the

amputee themselves. they have a harder time. it's hard, even today if people see me coming they want to hold a door open for me. >> maybe they are not sure what you are capable. >> that is a lot of it. >> they don't know you like we do. >> a lot of that is true. been a single parent the last ten years. that's been a big part. i changed diapers. >> whitney, you've only known your dad this way. has it been difficult to deal with friends and people and just young girl things? >> i think it was really easy because we were open in the family about it. he was always in the school with my classes, working with my teachers, working with the students. it was never really awkward to have him there. they loved it. he was my girl scout leader. >> of course he was. >> we went camping. we did everything. as for the girl stuff, we knew she was passing and prepared both of us for what was going to
