good morning, everybody. welcome to "news4 midday." it's thursday, november 3rd, 2011. we begin with new details in an early morning house fire in montgomery. a woman rescued from the burning home has died from her injuries. two firefighters were injured in the fire that broke out this morning on iris street in rockville. >> reporter: this fire was so devastating it sent four people to the hospital, and now we received word that one of them

has died. these pictures taken buy a neighbor shows how devastating this morning's fire was. it happened in the 4700 block of iris street in rockville. two husband and wife have two children who no longer live with them, and the husband was in the 60s and so was his wife, who died in the fire. >> i ran outside and saw the fire was there, and i grabbed a small hose along with another neighbor, and we started to spray the front of the house because that's where the fire was at. the man of the house was outside, running around kind of frantic. and then the firefighters arrived and took over. and they pulled the lady out, maybe ten minutes later. i didn't see that she was breathing or anything.

>> reporter: the wife was pronounced dead after arriving to the hospital. the quiet couple reportedly lived in the house since the mid-70s. >> the amount of fire dimt that the county sent out was incredible. the response was unbelievable. >> wil fire investigators say it appeared this fire started in the basement of the home, the exact cause has not been decided yet. in rockville, i am tracee wilki wilkins, news4. today the county is doing their annual winter storm drill. megan mcgrath is live with details. >> reporter: preparing is the key word here, because you know if there was actual snow on the ground, they would not let me inside the salt dome here.

but what they are doing is practicing, and practice makes perfect. that's what they are doing. before we get hit by mother nature, in a serious way they are going out there and making sure everybody is ready and it's a busy morning here. the salt dome is alive with activity and the plows are attached to the drukz, and the strange thing is there's no snow on the ground, and that's the point, to check things out under normal conditions and see if anything needs tweaking? >> changes have been made to the infrastructure, and so we want to make sure there's no snow is

on the ground. >> montgomery county staged a snow dry run today. plow drivers reported for duty and drove their routes just like they would in a real snowstorm. gps units have every snow route in the county plotted out, and that means any driver can take over any route at anytime. at the storm operation center they listen to the radio traffic on the plow drivers and collect data on road conditions. today they are practicing under a specific saw nacenariscenario accumulation and traffic time. >> it was a mock snowstorm. forecast to begin at 7:00 a.m. the mock snow did fall at 7:00 a.m., and so it's a 12 hour event ending at 7:00 p.m. >> reporter: the federal

government is looking at their dismissal guide. do you remember last january, january the 26th, to be exact, when we had bad weather, and all the employees were let out when the weather was hairy out there. and just an absolute nightmare. the government is looking at a number of possible changes to their dismissal guide to make sure that doesn't happen again. they are looking at staggered dismissals, and a leave no later than deadline folks as well as possible shelter in place type of scenarios for the folks if the weather gets to bad to opt not to leave at all and stay in their offices until things clear up. no final decisions as of yet, but it's that time of year where people are starting to think of snow. and last weekend they got a little snow, and that was in

and if you continue on to 395, here is the view at duke street. from edsall to the 14th street bridge, i am not seeing anything in the roadways for you right now. the 14th street bridge, clear making your way into the city. new from overnight, police are investigating a violent crash in prince georges county. it happened on route 50. a man on the road swerved to avoid hitting a deer. that forced a driver of the suv to swerve and crash into a tree. a woman in the suv was hurt when a pile of tools inside hit her. and the tools included a table saw, and her name and condition are not being released at this time, and everybody else involved in the accident is okay for this time. and the trial may be over. brittany norwood has been

convicted of premeditated first-degree murder for the death of murray inside the l lululemons store. >> after a week of hard to hear testimony, relief for murray's family. the jury came back in less than an hour, and guilty of the premeditated murder. 331 in flowers on the sidewalk to show the number of weapons. they say murray was alive for the entire attack. and her family was overcome with the emotion. >> numbness but gratefulness to the jury. >> more than anything, i know

the trauma a family has been through. i want no other family to go through this. >> norwood's attorney admitted she did kilmery, and he said it happened in a fight. and there was a specific turning point for one juror. >> the number of injuries, and where they were sustained and they were sustained while she was still alive before the final injury that killed her was struck made it -- i don't know, really swayed the jury i believe. >> the verdict came down wednesday. it could mean a sentence of life in prison without parole, and sentencing scheduled for late january. barbara? >> thank you, melissa. the man accused of murdering his estranged wife and her 11-year-old son will appear in court this afternoon. curtis lopez arrived in montgomery county yesterday

that she is worried about the attention she might receive and how that might affect her family and career. president obama is in france for the key economic summit. the president is meeting with other leaders in cannes. the number one priority is to resolve the european financial crisis. meanwhile, there are reports that greece scrapped its plans to put a european bailout to a popular vote. the number of european leaders have warned that the referendum could decide whether greece remains in the 17-nation euro zone. president obama's jobs bill is expected to be dealt a blow today. senate republicans are planning

a delightful day under way. just a few whis thatty high clouds coming over from the west. and there is an area of rain that is an arcing area of rain that stretches from central indiana to central kentucky, and western tennessee. and perhaps overnight tonight or across virginia, and maybe as far north as washington by dawn tomorrow. so as we take a look at what has been happening over the last 12 hours, the high clouds coming over this morning, and a lot of sun auch to toff to the west, al cloud up as it gets into the evening hours tonight. temperatures in the 50s just about everywhere from the shenandoah valley to the beaches. in prince georges county it's in the 50s as is arlington and fairfax. going forward over the next 48 hours, we will see this cloud cover thickening up as we get

into the morning hours. and rain looks like it will move into west virginia at about midnight tonight and then further east as we get towards the commute tomorrow, we may have wet roads to the south, and most areas from washington southern suburbs north should stay dry as the area of rain passes through, though it will quickly take the clouds away and will clear out on friday afternoon and then cold air moves in on saturday morning under a clear sky. we will be down near freezing throughout much of the region, and then bright sunshine on saturday. for the rest of the thursday, we will have a few clouds and quite a bit of sunshine, and temperatures climbing into the mid-60s in a few locations, and it won't last long because of the shorter daylight hours it will get the colder air moving back in tonight under a cloudy sky. sunset, 6:06, and then by midnight it will be near 50 degrees.

righted now on "news4 midday," we learned that a woman pulled from a burning home this morning died. firefighters say the woman in her 60s was unresponsive when they rescued her from the home in the 4700 block of iris street in rockville. her husband was able to escape the home on his own and suffered minor injuries. brittany norwood faces life in prison without parole after

being found guilty of killing her co-worker in march. the jury took an hour to come back with the guilty verdi. the sentencing is set for january 27th of 2012. a family judge is now the subject of a police investigation now that his daughter posted a video of him beating her. we must warn you, this video is tough to watch at times. hilary adams from texas was 16 years old when the discipline happened. he started hitting her with his belt. she posted the video now hoping the attention will force her father to get help. >> i think he has been punished enough just by seeing this go public like this, and i think he really needs help and rehabilitation. we need to get him counseling or something. >> do you have any regrets by the way, of releasing this, now

that it has gone so public and some of the people watching it? >> people close to me have had trouble with this, and of course i have trouble that it's my father, and i have mixed feelings, and at the same time many people are telling me i did the right thing. >> adams admits he lost his temper but believes he did nothing wrong. closing arguments are set to begin in the case of michael jackson's doctor, conrad murray. he elected not to take the stand and today the defense team will try to repair testimony from their star witness. murray could face up to four years in prison and have his medical licenses revoked if he is found guilty. a fairfax county neighborhood is on a lurt.

a 14-year-old says a man tried to snatch her while she walked home from school. the teen says the man approached her near tan intersection close to her home. he offered to give her a ride to school and then when she ignored him he grabbed her. the girl struggled and got away. officials have sent a e-mail to parents notifying them about the incident. it was certainly no treat for one little boy in blacksburg virginia who went trick-or-tr t trick-or-treati trick-or-treating. >> he said that's gross, and he said you can have it. >> rhonda says her 6-year-old son found a raw chicken foot in his halloween candy bag. police are trying to figure where the chicken came from but they said it would be hard to e find a guilty party because they

only got one complaint. we will check in with tom kierein for the latest on the forecast. >> there's a small chance of a few showers tomorrow morning, but right now we have sunshine, and we have had a few high clouds drifting over us. it's sunny throughout most of the region, but we will have increasing clouds. right now temperatures have hit the 50s throughout much of the area and will continue to climb. they may actually hit the low to mid-60s here by midafternoon briefly, and then quickly back down into the 50s after sunset, which today is at 6:06. by dawn on friday, down into the low 40s. in the morning, we will warm back into the low to mid-50s and upper 50s by friday afternoon and a small chance of a few sprinkles on friday afternoon, and areas mainly to the south of washington. the sun back friday afternoon with a gusty northerly wind. and afternoon highs in the low 50s with bright sunshine.

d.c. laid off a dozen people that put boots on the cars for unpaid parking tickets. and today a memorial service and public viewing for dr. frank kameny will be held in the mt. vernon square. he was fired from his job as the army map service because he was gay. he sued, and even though he lost, his case was the first civil rights claim based on sexual orientation. t the national park service has donated his home as a historic place. and then money, mavericks

a whole foods market could be coming to prince georges county, but not everybody is happy to redevelop a heavy wooded area there. the proposal to build a town center includes a whole foods center on route 1. some people say the traffic would get worst if that comes to the area, and they are worried the property taxes will go up. and the mayor is looking at ways to ease the concerns. >> the devil is in the details and we would love to have a

whole foods, and on the other hand we don't want to seat existing community get runover in order to get it. >> it would be good for investment, but if you want to make it your primary residence, it would be too much for me. >> it would include a an office space and developers would need to change the zoning law in prince georges county for the plan to move forward. fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week. courtney reagan joins us with the rest of the business headlines too. >> jobless claims were better than what we have seen in the recent weeks, so that's good news. but really, you know what is in the driver's seat today, europe again. we're in positive territory. and the dow is up about 112 points onward of an unexpected rate cut by the european central

bank. now, some of the gains that we saw initially were briefly lost after a report showed that our service industries expanded last month, but at the slower pace than forecasts. that's an indication the economy is still struggling to gain momentum. today's daily deal, a publicly traded company. groupon is expected to price tonight, and it could price above the expected change. groupon will start trading tomorrow. the biggie, facebook, which could do an ipo sometime next year. well, the annual running of the brides is coming to the end. the company has filed for a bankruptcy for a third time.

martin luther king jr. but they did not bring the whole family. >> we have 12 children. three girls, and the rest are all boys. they adopted some of the 12 including requan and molique. >> and he is nice and funny and intelligent. >> he loves to watch tv with us, and movies. >> she says before cameron, she thought they adopted their last child and then her husband got a call. >> cameron came into our life by the way of the county services, and they asked my husband, would they like another son. i said -- he talked to me, and i said another one? i said, okay, we will give you one more try. >> julius hayes says the new son is adjusting well. >> it's particularly hard for
