good morning, everybody. welcome to "news4 midday." i am barbara harrison, it's friday, november 4th, 2011. a hazmat team has been dispitched on the border of maryland. employees of the post office were immediately evacuated. we will bring you updates on this as soon as they become available to us. right now, more than 175 sailors are receiving a hero's welcome as they return home from

a three-month long stint in afghanistan. and squadron 209 touched down an hour ago. we have news of the happy reunion. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. what a reunion. take a look at the families behind me. the plane touched down about 10:20 this morning, and you can feel the excitement grow as the families waited to catch a glimpse of the loved ones. we were given before it landed about a seven-minute heads up that the plane was about ready to land, and the lady standing next to me turned to me and said this is the longest seven minutes i think i experienced. so everybody is very, very happy to be together. we actually had a family that was reunited for the first time. the father met his son for the first time because his child was

born while he was overseas. hugs, tears of joy and relief, and plenty of kisses. after 85 days in afghanistan, vaq 209 arrived safely this morning. this is not just a homecoming, it's one of the most important days of his life. his wife, jessica, gave birth while he was overseas, and this is the first time he has met his little baby. >> amazing. looking forward to it, the first thing i wanted to do was just grab him and kiss him, you know. i got to see him through skype, but it's not the same thing of holding him. >> i am happy. i am able to cry. it's really emotional for me, and for him to meet the baby. >> reporter: being in a war zone far away from loved ones is not easy. the squad's mission was

successful, and everybody is home safe, and here in the hanger, there is nothing but smiles. >> it's difficult with the baby now, but other than that, you have to do what you have to do. >> reporter: now, the majority of the squad arrived home this morning, but there are 20 or so members due to arrive on sunday, so there will be another reunion here at andrews similar to this. you can see the excitement on the faces of everybody as they saw their loved ones step off the plane, and a lot of hugs and kisses. here in the hanger, they have a party set up and a moon bouncer set up for the kids, and everybody is back together. >> very moving for all of those that got to watch it like you and me and everybody out there looking right now. that was very emotional. >> yes, it is. it was wonderful to see. >> thank you, megan. a popular capitol hill bar is back open for business after being closed for months due to fire damage.

it re-opened its doors at 8:00 a.m. for the first time since june. a kitchen fire ripped through the fire causing extensive damage. while it was closed the staff helped to raise $40,00$40,000 t staffers while out of work. new this midday, we learned the district will get a $6 million settlement after a fire destroyed a library. the fire started while contractors were renovating the building in 2007. it destroyed large parts of the book collection and caused damage to the building. the library reopened in october of 2010. new today, some good news. october jobs report out. last month employers added 80,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped down slightly to

9%. and it appears more jobs were added in august and september than previous thought. those two months added an additional 201,000 jobs. turning to the weather now, we saw fog and rain out there this morning. some of us did. but will we see sun today? >> it's going to take a while. we have a bris sxk nk and north wind, and you need to layer up a bit. and right now these patches of light, and sprinkles trying to reach the ground in northern fairfax and southern montgomery, and these are drifting off to the south, and the sky is beginning to clear out in western maryland, and some of the dry air will push in by this

seeing a lot of green in both directions. and i do see one yellow car slowing just a bit, and continuing on to 395, let me show you this way, i see construction taking away the left lane for you, but the other lanes are open, and as you continue to the 14th street bridge, barbara, you are clear. back to you. in other news, one man is dead after the serious accident on the inner loop of the beltway. it happened this morning when an suv slammed into the back of the trail lure. and tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: the beltway is open and traffic is moving just fine, and now maryland state police are trying to figure out what exactly caused this morning's crash. they do know that one truck stopped and the vehicle behind it did not.

an suv slammed into the back of the tractor trailer. it happened between georgia and connecticut avenue. the crash happened with enough force to dismantle the rear bumper, and that's the bar that is supposed to stop vehicles from sliding underneath tractor trailers. >> when i saw his speed, i didn't know what to do. i couldn't do anything because he was coming up on me so fast. >> the driver of the tractor did not want his face shown on camera, and the driver was so severe he could not tell if the driver was inside of the mangled suv. >> i didn't know if the person was in their car, because when i got out and looked i could not see the person. the second time i got out, they had the lights shining in there and i saw they had passed. >> a section of the beltway was

shut down as the police investigate the crash. the accident happened inside of a work zone. wilson says he slowed down for the work zone, but for some reason the driver of the suv did not. >> i am familiar with, you know, with this highway stuff going on, so that's why i slowed down and had my signal on and everything. >> reporter: maryland state police say the driver of the tractor trailer was not in any fault and will not be charged or ticketed. and the autopsy results from the driver of the accident will be returned before the

we have breaking news out of london right now. a rupert murdoch owned company says it has launched a new compensation plan. victims of the phone hacking at the now defunct "news of the world" can apply for a settlement. they have set up a fund to the alternative to litigation. it has identified more than 5,700 potential victims. and now the g-20 meetings are wrapping up in france. and leaders of the world's largest economy is hoping to establish a financial firewall to protect countries like littlely and spain from default. many countries outside the euro

conference. it begins at 6:00 this evening. republican presidential candidate, mitt romney and herman cain are expected to speak, as well as giuliani. looming over herman cain's campaign is the possibility of a statement from a woman that accused him of harassment in the 1990s. >> that's right. today we may finally get a statement from one of cain's accusers about what she said was inappropriate sexual misconduct. she worked with cain in the '90s, and the lawyer is asking the association to throw out the confidentiality clause. >> she had nothing to do with

as we take a look outside, we have had a few sprin kills this morning and the clouds linger. that's a live picture from the city camera. you can see that it may be light fog in the air. still cloudy, and the temperature is 54 degrees, and the wind has been coming in out of the north and northeast will pick up. over the last 12 hours, the moving color is rain. we had that coming across virginia. we had a few sprinkles as far north as washington over the last several hours, and the closer view of what has been happening showing a few sprinkles in southern montgomery county. a lot of these are evaporating before they do. and perhaps into foulk county, and this is drifting towards the south. you might have a sprinkle into the metro area in an hour or so. sunshine breaking out in western maryland and in pennsylvania,

and that should be coming our way later today. right now around the region, still a chill in the air. and with the blustery wind, it feels colder than this. it feels like 40s with the wind. it's in the 50s from the atlantic beaches and in prince george's montgomery and arlington fairfax counties. it's chilly and around 50 there now. let's go forward over the next 48 hours. clouds should break up and clear out by this evening. it looks totally clear, and overnight tonight turning colder with the northerly wind. that will be in place tomorrow morning through the day on saturday into saturday night and sunday. we will be clear all the way into sunday afternoon and the first part of next week. so for the next part of the friday, sunshine breaking out later this afternoon. temperatures reaching the upper 50s, but the wind gusting around

25 miles per hour. it will be blustery into tonight as well under a clear sky. great weather for all the high school games tonight, and for tonight it will be clear and chilly, and that gusty north wined will be with us. it will be 50 in the evening and then 40 near midnight and continuing to drop to near freezing by dawn on saturday. the sunset is at 6:05 on saturday, and turning our clocks late saturday night before you go to bed. and bright and sunny during the day tomorrow. and good weather for the high school and college games on saturday. and then on sunday, bright and sunny, another cold start to the day in the mid-30s in the morning, and afternoon highs, mid-60s. monday around 60 and still sunny, and milder as we get into next week, midweek, and tuesday may hit the mid-60s, and a

shoulder center staikz, and 3 1/2 teaspoons of greek seasoning, and fresh dill, and bread wraps, which are pitas, and chopped tomatoes, and crumbled cheese. sounds delicious and can't wait to see how you make it. >> delicious and healthy. i cooked the beef, sliced the stake, and then you are not using any added oil. it's a lean cut of steak. >> it's nice and tender already. >> yes, nice and tender. we will make the greek yogurt sauce. you have a cup of greek yogurt. i like to use healthy ingredients and you can use nonfat. and so then i will add a little greek seasoning, and you can buy it in a jar.

>> i see. you got it right here. >> it's a combination of garlic and mint and all the good stuff we like. and then we will add the diced english cucumber, because they are less seedy and watery, and we will add that in there, and it's going to be a nice veggie-heavy sauce. and then diced olives, and you want to make sure and buy them pitted because they are no fun to pit yourself, and they give you a lot of flavor. then we have fresh dill that gives it a fresh, clean taste. they are delicious flavors. they will be at the base of the wrap. you can see that it's nice and thick. that way, what we will do from

right now, hazmat teams and other agencies are on the scene investigating a white powder that escaped from a white package that escaped earlier this morning. employees of the post office were immediately evacuated. more than 175 sailors returned home a couple hours ago after a three-month long deployment in afghanistan. squadron 209 completed 200 missions in that time with 100% success rate. some of the sailors are returning to meet their children for the first time. and then dr. conrad murray faces four years in prison if convicted. stephanie stanton has more on the final arguments jurors heard to help them make their decision. >> and we will excuse you for the evening. >> the fate of dr. conrad murray

rests in the hands of the jury who must decide if the doctor is criminally responsible for the death of michael jackson. >> michael jackson trusted conrad murray. >> the prosecution presented closing arguments to the jury. >> every single doctor that testified in the courtroom told you they would never do what conrad murray did. every single doctor. because they know it could lead to death. >> the prosecutors hammered home that conrad murray is culpable in jackson's death. >> because he acted with criminal negligent. >> at what point do you draw the line about dr. murray's responsibility for the grown-up? >> and the defense tried to convince the jury that it was not dr. murray but michael jackson himself that caused his death. >> michael jackson went into his

through northern virginia, southern montgomery county, and that little patch of green that extends into foulkear, and that will move through in another couple hours and after that we should begin to see sunshine. temperatures are in the low to mid-50s, but it feels chillier than that with the gusty breeze that is gusting from 20 to 25 miles per hour. that will be the story through the afternoon, as the sun comes out and the northerly wind, it may peek in the next couple hours, and then will drop by dawn on saturday. a clear night tonight, in the 40s through the evening, and then will have the blustery wind and will have it settle down tomorrow morning. during the day, saturday, 50s, and monday up near 60 and brighter on tuesday, and could get showers on wednesday and thursday. that's the way it looks right now. barbara? >> tom, thank you.

here is a story that is interesting. a jonah-like experience. look at this, two humpback whales look like they will swallow the surfer. the video was shot monday off of a local beach. a pod of local whales have been hanging out for a couple weeks now. the whales are lunging out of the water to catch schools of fish, but looks like they are wanting to swallow the surfer. the roads look good. travel times around the beltway, the outer loop making your way towards university blvl boulevard, you are traveling at 34 miles per hour. and if you are continuing on the inner loop and making your way towards the wilson bridge, not

tomorrow, but a group of 50 players are threatening to push to decertify their union, and that would allow them to file an antitrust suit against the league. they are butting heads over how to split revenue. they have cancelled a month of the season and more games could follow. this weekend the skins face the san francisco 49ers, and the best run defense in the league, not good news for a skins' offense that only had 26 yards rushing last week against the 20th ranked rushing defense. and offensive coordinator, shanahan has heard the critics and is confident. >> anytime you get shutout, i expect to get criticized and i expect it from you guys and my wife and myself. i mean, it's embarrassing. what matters to me is whether the players believe in me or not.

former president bill clinton criticized president obama in his new book "back to work." he says the debt ceiling debate made america look weak and confused overseas. he described the state of the country as a mess, and he took it upon himself to help the democrats in the elections, and he tried to explain what the democrats had accomplished. the book "back to work" will be released on tuesday. a nanny in d.c. may have held bank of america customers

back from putting the fee in place. she started an internet petition when she heard about the bank's plans to charge users $5 a month for using debit cards. bank of america announced they cancelled plans to create the fee. she says her impact had to do with good timing. a report on the u.s. job market is missed this morning. let's check in with courtney reagan. she has the rest of the day's business headlines, too. >> good morning, barbara. stocks are extending their losses. the stock is down 154 points now. we are not out of the woods yet. and traders are awaiting the results of a confidence vote that is expected in greece later today and that could determine whether europe's bailout will go as planned.

and jobs were added in october, but it is still short of the expectations of 95,000 jobs. but the unemployment rate has dropped to a six-month low to 9.0%, down slightly from 9.1% from last month. the u.s. senate blocks president obama again. the $447 billion jobs plan was shot down by the u.s. senate on thursday by a vote of 51-49. it blocked a infrastructure proposal that included highway, rail and airport improvements. the daily deal site groupon launched it's site today, and now you can buy their stock. right at the gate, they were basically selling for an increase. part of the reason for that strong demand is due to lack of supply. the company is putting up 5% of
