in the hands of the jury. >> they have been deliberating since first thing this morning. >> stephanie stanton has been following the trial since the very beginning. she's live in los angeles with the latest developments today. stephanie? >> reporter: good afternoon to you. it is day one of deliberations at the courthouse in los angeles. it's a jury of seven men and five women. they are on lunch break. they have been deliberating all morning long. they are faced with the task of determining dr. conrad murray eesz fate. the jury has been behind closed doors. they are deliberating one count of manslaughter. legal experts will know soon whether it's going to be a quick decision. >> if they go past friday at 4:00, it's the bewitching hour, and go into next week, that

means the jury is struggling with a verdict. >> reporter: they are considering hundreds of pieces of evidence from witnesses, including three of dr. murray's former girlfriends. former patients, security guards and medical experts. a chilling audio tape was played in open court. >> when people leave my show, i want them to say, i've never seen nothing like this in my life. go. go. >> reporter: all though dr. murray himself did not take the stand, jurors heard a taped recording he did with the police dayed after michael jackson's death. >> i got to sleep dr. conrad. >> reporter: if murray is convicted, he will face a sentence from probation to four years in prison and lose his medical license.

deliberations began at 8:30 this morning. the jurors took a short break around 10:15, a 15 minute break until 10:30 and broke for lunch at noon. it's interesting to see. we don't know where they are in that process and when we might expect a verdict. we are on verdict watch. deliberations will continue during normal court hours until a verdict is reached. it's the latest in downtown los angeles. back to you. >> thank you. tonight, there is a very special edition of "dateline," the last days of michael jackson. jermaine was asked if dr. murray said anything to him at the hospital the day the king of pop died. >> he didn't say anything to me. >> after he died, dr. murray is quoted as saying, i feel like i lost my best friend. >> really? the only time i saw dr. murray was in the hospital when i got the news michael passed. i didn't know who he was but i

noticed his behavior. if you lost your best friend, you would have acted different. >> what did he act? >> fidgeting and looking around. i said something is wrong. >> don't miss it tonight at 10:00. an exploding package and white powder caused quite a scare. it turned out to be nothing more than an electrical problem. employees heard a popping sound and thought a package in a storage locker exploded. the building was evacuated. emergency officials soon determined the noise was caused by a fluorescent light fixture that malfunctioned and the box contained cookies. the white powder was probably smoke from a broken light. we have breaking news now. the attorney of the woman who

no wrong doing in 1999. so far, it's working. if the sexual allegations stick, cain voter surveys will have to be redone. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. there is finally optimism with the nation -- within the nation's work force. a new government work force shows employers added 80,000 jobs last month and unemployment fell for the first time since july. it went from 9.1% to 9%. economic analysts say the job market is stabilizing and appears to be speeding up a bit. stocks meanwhile, recovered from their worst levels today. at the end of trading, they ended lower. at last check, the dow fell 59 points to close at 11,985. the nasdaq was off 12 points to end at 2,686.

cross. this features 100 designer pocketbooks up for auction. miss maryland and miss virginia were special guests at the event. last year, they raised $20,00. organizers are confident this year will raise twice that much. the u.s. coast guard is keeping a close watch on the waters off santa cruz where a pod of whales are close to shore. they are in search of food. now, whale watchers are in search of them. a surfer and kayak got too close into the action when two whales came out of the water monday. it was shot by a photographer using a telephoto lens. her camera was on the surfer because the water was cold and the woman was not wearing a wet suit. >> wow. that is amazing. also a little scary. >> yeah. >> too close for comfort.

up in the washer and drier? it's time to ask liz all the burning questions. how are you? >> nice to see you. >> the first question comes from david. he's seen the price of peanut butter skyrocket and we want to know why. >> what's going on? the ap says planters peanut butter raised prices by 40% monday. jiff plans to raise prices by 30%. the weather has everything to do with the rising peanut butter prices. peanut production is down 13% from last year due to the drought-like conditions at peanut farms. there are fewer peanuts to go around so peanut butter producers are responding with the price hike. peanut butter sandwiches on the rice. the next question comes through facebook from a viewer

named john. why do we get our weather report from reagan national and not somewhere in the city? >> why is it over there in virginia. we turned to doug kammerer for this. many cities use airports for weather observation centers. airports are places that always need the latest weather information so flights can take off and land safely. since there are no reports in d.c., we news nearby reagan for that information. we used to have a location in northwest d.c. and then switched to get reports from reagan national when the airport opened in the early '40s. the last question through e-mail from a viewer named jennifer. her sheets always get tangled in the wash. she wants to know and i want to know if there's a way to prevent that from happening? >> i didn't believe someone could give me a good answer, but

moments after a washington man pleaded guilty to a number of arsons. he was slapped with new indictments for a series of other fires. jackie bensen joins us live with tonight's developments. >> reporter: 34-year-old maurice pled guilty to fires here in the district. when he was done, a prince george's county officer was waiting for him. he admitted to a laundry room of arsons. among them a house fire on 48th place northeast that came very close to killing a squad of d.c. firefighters. four escaped with serious burns, a fifth was injured. >> they skin graphed both of my hands. i had skin graphs done to my left and right arms. my back and shoulder area is
