started in a basement apartment, a ground level apartment. one person does injured getting himself out of the burning apartment. hundreds were displaced. some were only temporarily displaced as they evacuated some of the adjacent buildings out of concern that the fire may spread. those many the building where the fire started are still out. power was cut off to the other buildings in the complex. we'll get details on this from chief mike riley of the fairfax county fire department. and what he tells us is that one person was actually cut themselves trying to get out. they broke a window out. when the families were displaced, they were actually standing out on commerce street and it was sub freezing temperatures out here. a lot of folks had babies. a lot of folks in their pajamas. what firefighters actually did was they forced entry into the fast eddie's bill yard lounge across the street just to get people warm. the management of fast eddie's

was notified of this. they were okay with it. they understood what was happening. now those families have since been removed from fast eddie's and they're being taken to an adjacent school. we hear now from chief mike riley and the details about how this fire started. >> it was sub freezing temperatures. people out there with their little infants not really properly protected. so we did force entry into fast eddie's restaurant across the street. >> reporter: so as we said, that did happen. they actually got a call from some explosions. they're not saring that that was the origin of the fire. sometimes in a fire things will explode. this may have started in a kitchen area. there's a lot of combustibles, more than you think in the average home. investigators are indeed on the other side of this. the families that were in the building where the fire started will remain displaced. some folks were out on the ball conies and had to be rescued via ladder. the investigation continues into this fire.

the folks are into a school where they can have food prepared and be able to be warm while they are found -- while places are found for them to spend the rest of their day until they can get back into their apartments. we're live in springfield. not back to you. >> dereks, it's good they're keeping warm. we noticed some yellow tape behind you and a lot of emergency response on the scene. trafficwise, are there any roads closed? >> reporter: commerce street has just been re-opened. the road closures are over? most of it is contained to the parking lot of this complex. folks in the complex may have some trouble getting in because of all the fire equipment. around it traffic the flowing well. >> derek ward reporting live from springfield, virginia, thank you. we're also staying on top of a terrible tragedy in prince georges county. two young children are dead after the car they were in crashed and then caught on fire. the accident involved three

vehicles on route 50 near martin luter king junior highway last night. it caused a traffic nightmare. firefighters say the two children were inside a car that caught on fire. killed were an 11-year-old and a 2-year-old. at least three other people were rushed to the hospital, but are expected to survive. we will bring you much or on this story as it becomes available. and our other big story, a shock development at a rally involving occupy d.c. protesters. three of them were hurt when they were hit by a car this is video from that demonstration in front of the convection center. that's where a conservative group was holding a dinner. police say the victims were apparently trying to block the roadway and one of them jumped on to the hood of a car. all three are expected to survive. police say the driver involved in the accident will not be charged with anything because he had the green light at the time. if you enjoyed those lovely temperatures, you'd better heat it up, you're in for a rude

awakening this morning. meteorologist chuck bell is in our weather center with a first look at the forecast. the wake up call may in the be too rude, the minute you go outside the door, there's a cold slap on the face for you. temperatures are in the 30s in nearly every neighborhood. but it's bright and sunny. it is going to be a beautiful weekend as long as all you need to call it beautiful is sunshine. 41 now in downtown washington. but 34 in waldorf. still just barely at the freezing mark in frederick, maryland, out towards win chers, virginia. plenty of cold air this morning. nothing on radar. we don't need to worry about any precipitation. a nice stretch of dry weather coming our way. today sunny and chilly, breezy at times especially the further east towards the bay, that's where the winds will be the strongest. it's saturday. it's november now. college football if you're

weekend if you drive the hot lanes construction zone in northern virginia. overnight v.crews began shifting the inner loop lanes from their temporary con tir nation to their permanent lanes. you can see cars moving at speed on the beltway. orchanges drivers will notice the route 123 clover leaves will re-open putting an end to usual temporary ramps. it means the lighted left turn lane to go to the northbound beltway will go away as well. the progress can't come soon enough for construction weary commuters. >> coming up this way is often a hassle because they're changing the exits so often sometimes you don't know which exit you're supposed to take. it will be really nice for everything to be back to normal. >> drivers will notice some of the changes today. v dot says the complete shift will be finished by the monday morning commute. now on to decision 2012 where a new poll has herman cain

still at the top despite claims from three women he sexually harassed them, a new abc "the washington post" poll shows he's right at the top neck in neck with mitt romney. yesterday one of cain's accusers spoke out through an attorney and told reporters that his client filed a complaint in 1999 against the presidential candidate and she's not the only one who was sexually harassed. >> there's an expression where there's smoke there's fire. the fact that there's mults pl complaints tells me that it's more likely than not that there was some sexual harassment activity by this man at that time. all of that's subject to proof. he would be allowed to rebut all of them. and -- but the fact that there's more than one complainant is meaningful. >> the accuser's attorney also said the woman did not want to reveal her identity and become a public figure and is hoping the media does not publish her name. president obama is back at

the white house after a two-day meeting for the g-20 summit in france. the summit was dominated by the ongoing debt crisis in greece. european leaders are working together to try to solve the problem as italy and spain are both suffering similar financial situations. president obama spoke at the summit saying the problems overseas are not unlike the problems right here in america. as for greece, the prime minister received a vote of confidence from his parliament even though he said he might not seek re-election. greece' leader made his headlines earlier this week when he announced a referendum on the $180 billion bailout. he eventually backed down after intense pressure from not only his own citizens but leaders from other countries in the european union. right now gabrielle giffords is back in houston after two weeks of intensive therapy. the arizona congresswoman got the treatment at a facility in north carolina as she continues to recover from a gunshot wound to the head.

it comes as giffords revealed in her upcoming book that she plans to return to congress. gifds said she lost half of her sight in both eyes and had to relearn how to walk and talk after last january's shooting. her friends on capitol hill are not surprised to hear that she plans to return. >> every single time i see her, she's saying more. she's able to articulate things in more complex ways and she's stronger. >> giffords and her husband also reveal that before the shooting they had been trying fertility treatments hoping to get pregnant. the journalism world is mourning the loss of a legendary anchor and reporter, andy rooney. the lovable curmudgeon retired a few weeks ago as a regular commentator for "60 minutes" where he worked for more than 30 years. two weeks ago he had minor surgery but developed serious complications. he got his start in the military

today. welcome baa news 4 today. it's saturday, november 5th. and straight off the top this half-hour, a developing story we're tracking this morning. the colombian military is calling on a rebel group to disband after their leader is killed in a military strike. he had been a top target of colombia's military claiming he was responsible for a deadly bombing that left a top military leader dead last year. the killing is the late nest a series of set backs for latin america's last remaining leftist army. a second iraq war veteran has been hurt in occupy oakland protests after clashing with police. the 32-year-old army soldier is suffering a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding. he claims police beat him and then left him handcuffed in a police van before taking him to jail instead of a hospital.

national championship for catholic. >> go cardinals. >> is it also futbol. >> i like the change up. thank you, chuck. new overnight, a series of earthquakes have shaken parts of the midwest. the first quake hit just after 2:00 in the morning just north of the town of prague. that's about 50 miles east of oklahoma city. the 4.7 magnitude quake could be felt as far away as kansas, missouri and arkansas. two smaller quakes followed over the next 30 minutes. oklahoma city police say they received several 911 calls but have no reports of injuries or damage. a man convicted of setting a number of fires in the district now faces a number of charges for fires in prince georges county. the suspect was hit with those new indictments just moments after pleading guilty in d.c. superior court. jackie benson has the report. >> reporter: these garden apartment units are still empty

and boarded up. months after two separate arsons that prince georges county prosecutors now believe to be the work of a 34-year-old man. this boarded up apartment unit is the one he was accused of setting fire to in december of 2010 just a few months later in may, this unit was set on fire also believed to be the work of the same man. >> reporter: residents say it's a danger and an eyesore and they're furious to learn the fire is believed to have been deliberately set. >> that's very, very, very sad. and it could have cost people's lives. >> they need to close this down. it's not nothing down there but nothing. we need washers and dryers. there's nothing down there. we think people sleeping down there. >> reporter: in court he admitted to the laundry list of arsons in the district. among them a house fire in april of this year on 48th place northeast that came very close to killing a squad of d.c.

firefighters. four escaped with very serious burns, a fifth was also injured. >> it's really strange when you go from being able to do everything to doing really nothing. it's heart wrenching. my job means a lot to me. going to work and working with my colleagues. it's important. >> reporter: mike campbell of the atfs washington field office says the man called 911 after setting the fires and in two cases helped evacuate nearby homes behaved in a textbook fashion. >> the profiles that they put together of serial arsonists a lot of it are the same. they have some similar characteristics where sometimes they'll call and they'll be at the scene. one of those thins you're always looking for is those kind of commonalities. >> reporter: immediately after his court appearance here in the district he was taken to prince george's county to face charges there. jackie benson, news 4.

>> he will be sentenced for the d.c. arsons in february. a fairfax county woman is behind bars for selling synthetic marijuana. police say the 59-year-old woman sold the synthetic compound known as k 2 in lee's market in university mall near george mason's campus. according to police reports she would only sell the product to students. residents who frequent the shopping center say they're surprised. >> i was quite surprised to hear about it since i go right past there almost every week when we go to the vet now. and i've been in to buy sodas out of the cooler a couple of times, but never expected anything like this. >> virginia passed a law back in march that bans the sale of k 2 and other synthetic marijuana substances. the time right now 9:36. he stars on the hit show "psych" and has appeared in dozens of films. now corbin bernsen has a new project that hits close to home for many local families.

you're watching news 4 today. you may know him from "l.a. law" or "major league", now actor corbin bernsen is starting in "25 hill." it's premiering in our area this weekend. corbin is kind enough to stop into our studios early this morning. this is a project you are so proud of. >> i've been doing this during the "psych" season. i basically write a movie a year and shoot a movie a year. this one is particularly -- i'm fond of it not om because of the project itself, but what it's led me to. it has to do with the soap box derby, a tradition that was in jeopardy of dying. i'll make a film and bring some recognition to it and maybe another revenue stream.

what i've learned are the real core values of america in it. we're sitting here in washington, i'm driving around thinking that's what we've forgotten here. some of the stuff in the derby. >> you really had a chance to get in the minds and meet the females of the soap box derby families. and that's been a great experience for you. because in this time where we have so much technology and distractions and games to get involved with, these people really stand true to what the derby's all about. >> beyond that the words i use the thing i've seen in the derby is respect, teamwork and two big words family and community. i say this often, i don't mean that in a conservative, christian, right wing family community way. and i don't mean socialism either. i see a structural engineering block of what made this country great. i'm noticing, i say that driving around washington thinking this is where it started. the thing that's missing is that foundation of community of us

taking care of each other. it's how we started this whole thing. >> when you talk about washington, it seems like everybody is in such a disarray about washington and politics. we're at a time in economic turmoil, so this maybe really offers some hope for people. >> it does offer hope. i'm going to send a clear message straight out to everybody. whatever happens here, whoever you vote for, left, right, democrat, republican, none of it makes a difference until we effect some change within ourselves. that's what i'm seeing in the derby. this sense of communities. if you want to take a burden off the government and cost of government, start helping one another. i don't mean soccerism, i mean community. i don't mean charity. charity is a tax writeoff. i mean give of yourself, you partake in your community and you'll see not only the alleviate the financial burden, you create a very strong bond with those around you which is

as the redskins prepare to play the surprising san francisco 49ers, we look back at the 1984 n.f.c. championship game. it was a big time game where the big names showed up at the skins squeaked out a win to head to the super bowl. we look back at the great game. january 8, 1984, surviving san fran's furry, the skins record earned them home field advantage for the n.f.c. championship game. it was against bill walsh and the 49ers. scoreless in the second quarter first and ten on the skins' own 36. joe theismann throws deep to tight end clint didier.

theismann found charlie brown and check out the speed. a 70 yard play. that is pretty. skins up 21-0 after three quarters and having a bunch of fun. but the niners have a pretty talented joe of their own. joe montana lights it up in the fourth quarter. a five yard touchdown to mike wilson. skins lead by only 14. the next time he touched the ball a bomb. 76 yards to freddy solomon. it's now a seven-point lead. next series a 12 yarder to mike wilson. a 21-point third quarter lead vanished in less than eight minutes. the skins' offense has one last attempt. second and ten on the san fran 45, theismann to monk, incomplete. but eric wright was called for pass interference. >> it was a simple go pattern down the sideline. as the ball was nearing us, he

louisiana's the best seafood you'll ever eat. shrimp gumbo, crab cakes, etouffee. florida means beautiful beaches and sugar white sands. actually experts agree that the best beaches are here in alabama. which can't compare to a good time on the gulf in mississippi. louisiana fresh catch. florida beaches. alabama beauty. mississippi outdoors. the gulf is the world's goodtime headquarters. and we are 100% open for business. i'm glad we got that settled.
