[ male announcer ] get to a better state. tragedy on the highway. two children die as their mothers a car bursts into flameth with them trapped in the back seat. the boys were brothers. the youngest 2, the oldest 11, he played peewee football. his friends are in shock. darcy spencer live in forestville for us tonight. the maryland state police barracks, with more. >> reporter: valiant efforts to try and save these boys from this fiery crash, but the intensity of the fire and the heat prevented that from happening. their mother was driving the car. she has told friends she is obviously devastated by the loss

of her two young sons. chopper 4 was over the scene of a horrific three-car crash that claimed the lives of two boys, one 11, the other 2 years old, frld night. it was just after 9:30 on route 50 east near martin luther king junior high way in the glen arden area of prince george's county. 84 yeah vindle was driving a honda accord, the boys in the back seat. police say she rear-ended another car. both drivers stopped in the left travel lane. that's when a third car, a mercury marquise, driven by william lewis abui, slammed into the honda. the car caught fire, trapping the two children in the back. both boys died in the fire before rescuers could get there. we're told several motorists, including an off-duty fireman and two off-duty police officers, tried to save the boys from the burning wreckage but

the extreme heat made it impossible. the 11-year-old played on a football team. they practiced today with heavy hearts. >> it's not the first time that we've been through this. three years ago we had a young man that died in a car accident as well. going through this again as an organization, it's traumatic for all of us. >> reporter: the vindles' neighbors were also shaken by the loss of the two boys. >> the 2-year-old son would always come to my door, would always come up to me. if i had juice, chip, i'd always give it to him. >> reporter: all three drivers as well as one passenger were taken to the hospital. they're all expected to survive. maryland state police are continuing their investigation. it's unknown whether any charges will be filed in this crash. d.c. police denying that a police chase led to several cars being smashed in columbia heats.

an suv did big-time damage when it ran into several parked cars on euclid street early friday morning. a faulty refrigerator motor caused a car that put 30 people out of their homes in springfield around 5:00 a.m. in an apartment complex on commerce street. several families had to be rescued from their balconies there. one man actually had to break through his own window to get out. fairfax police broke into a nearby fast eddie's billiards to give people a warm place to stay. a shelter has been shet up at lee's community center. police say smoke detectors in several apartments were not working. smoke detectors probably saved several lives. a child playing with matches set fire to a townhouse.

all were able to get out in time. today is bank transfer day across the country. there were protests urging people to ditch the big banks in exchange for smaller credit unions. the movement has gained support from occupy protesters who staged several big rallies of their own this weekend. brian moore has the story. >> reporter: this was a day for angry consumers to vote with their pocketbooks by checking out of big banks and into credit unions with friendlier policies. >> a smooth transaction, that's all i want. i put money in my savings or checking, i just want to come in, it's there, okay, check on it with no late fees on it. >> reporter: bank transfer day begins an internet protest spearheaded by customers fed up with fees. bank of america this past week dropped the $5 debit charge that ignited the anger. some consumers still want to send a message. >> i want to be part of the bigger movement to try to take

back control of our finances and our economy. >> reporter: leaders of the anti-bank backlash say they're not directly associated with the occupy wall street movement, but both protests do share a similar sentiment. >> they are paying their top executives top dollar and trying to charge people fees to use their own money. >> reporter: the occupy protests are still going strong. with marches this weekend from new york to california. >> we're not mad at the lawyer or doctor or small business owner who's made $500,000 a year after working their butt off to get where they are, we're upset at the bankers making $500,000 a week preying on the misery of others. a driver who hit three occupy d.c. protesters with his car will not be charged. police say the driver had a green light when he hit the protesters in northwest last night. some witnesses say the demonstrators jumped in front of the car. other occupy members say the calf had time to stopr.

the protesters were trying to block the roadway where the conservative group americans for progress were meeting. the three people are expected to be okay. decision 2011. with just three days until crucial state elections virginia politicians are out in full force this weekend. governor bob mcdonald joined republicans for a rally in woodbridge today. democrats have an edge in the state senate but a few key senate victories tuesday would allow the gop to regain control of state government. turnout could be the deciding factor. >> so i'd say there's five or six races in the senate that are right at the margin of error. they're very close, very competitive. and it all depends on who shows up on election day. that's why we're flying around the state is to mobilize our friends and say, please vote republican, vote for this pro-growth, pro-free enterprise team and you'll have a better virginia.
