verdict at 2:00 this afternoon. they started deliberating on friday morning. >> the trial lasted six weeks and included the pop star's own voice. dr. conrad murray did not take the stand. the jury took less than nine hours. prosecutors depicted him as a reckless physician who abandoned jackson under the effects of propofol back on june 25th, 2009. >> if convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from probation. la toya jackson tweeted the verdict is finally in. she says i'm on my way. i'm shaking uncontrolably. we are waiting for the verdict and will bring it to you live. >> the entire jackson family is live in the courtroom. crowds are starting to build. we have seen people who have been there in support of dr.

murray. fans of michael jackson. we have seen dr. murray's patients come out there with signs in the weeks leading up to the day and many family members as well. we'll bring you the verdict as soon as we have it coming in. defense argued dr. murray was a victim of michael jackson's actions. prosecution argued he robbed jackson's children of their father. we will go live as soon as the verdict comes in. meanwhile, in other news today. president obama announced three new initiatives to help veterans find a job. at the rose garden at the white house, a key part called on congress to pass tax credits to hire former members of the military. he says this will help open up nearly 500,000 desperately needed jobs. >> there's no good reason to

oppose this bill, not one. veterans did their job. it's time for congress to do theirs. it's time to put country before party. put our veterans back to work. >> the senate is expected to take up the measure this week. a judge in charlottesville ruled attorneys accused of killing his ex-girlfriend is accused of beating her to death in may. a mix of alcohol and prescription medication is what killed her. another judge sealed her records. the judge today ruled there will be no cameras in the court and jurors will have to fill out questionnaires about their media exposure to the case. a student is being held without bond tonight in the murder of another student. she is accused of killing 19-year-old cortney mccoy during

a weekend party. students and staff are returning to campus trying to understand what happened. this is the second murder on campus this year. tracee wilkins has more from the school. behind me is the campus of the state university. to my left is the house where that party happened just over the weekend. right in front of this house is where the 19-year-old student lost her life. here at the house, they have the crime tape here. some of the remnants of the party that happened here. the second time in less than two year that is a student has been violently attacked and killed. a memorial service was held yesterday after the 19-year-old was found stabbed to death outside an off-campus house. she was a physics major and sang in the choir. police arrested and charged another student with the stabbing.

23-year-old shawnee ligens is in court. she was a business major. the stabbing happened after a fight inside the home spilled out on to the street. the suspect lived inside the home where the fight began, according to police. students who knew the victim are struggling to understand how this could have happened. the violence really needs to stop. no words. no words. >> it was very surprising. very sad. she was a good person, too. i didn't hear anything about her. she was always nice. >> it's kind of scary. it's an erie feeling. >> reporter: we knocked on the door of the house to speak to the roommates. they said through the door they had no comment. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. italian prime minister is denying rumors he's going to resign. italy has become an increasing

focus of the euro zone debt crisis. lawmakers are trying to push through several reforms to keep the country afloat. the coalition is growing weaker by the day. today, two journalists reported he was about to resign. then he post add message online saying rumors were baseless. on wall street, stocks made moderate gains in the final hours of training as investors continued to get mixed headlines. the dow picked up 84 points. the nasdaq up nine and the s&p 500 end of the day about seven points higher. tobacco companies won't be forced to put graphic images on the packages of cigarettes. the food and drug administration wanted images like diseased

lungs to warn against the dangers. the tobacco companies say it violates their freedom of speech. the judge blocked the requirement until it's settled. it could take years. a report published in the journal of pediatrics finds acetaminophen may worsen. it's marketed as tylenol. the report revealed several studies saying it could spark asthma symptoms and new cases. there's no proof that it directly causes asthma, but it shows the need for parents to be cautious when dispensing medication to their children. beautiful day. the flip side is we are ending earlier. an hour earlier than we are used to. let's get the first forecast. back to standard time and early evenings. veronica johnson is here to talk about the day.

well, she came and she went. lindsay lohan is a free woman agachblt just four and a half hours after turning herself into jail this morning, she was sentenced to 30 days behind bars for violating a probation because of a necklace theft conviction. she was released after a few hours because of overcrowding issues at the jail. she'll have to continue her community service at the los angeles morgue. is kim kardashian having second thoughts about her divorce in kris humphreys after 72 days of marriage? it's what sources are saying. kardashian left for minnesota to see him over the weekend.

through and individually asking each juror whether or not they agreed with the unanimous decision. it has to be unanimous. what we have found out in the last couple minutes, dr. conrad murray is found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of michael jackson. jeff rossen has been at the courtroom every day throughout the trial. he joins us now. jeff, your reaction from where you stand? >> reporter: harry, as soon as that bus clears, you'll see the reaction from the michael jackson fan who is gathered outside the courthouse. as soon as the guilty verdict was read, there was screaming, honking in the streets. you can see them on your screen. they started playing michael jackson music here. keep in mind, harry, conrad murray was not charged with murder. many thought, as they were discussing this around cocktail parties that the prosecutors had to prove that michael jackson

was killed by conrad murray. it's not the case. he was charged with manslaughter. the burden for the prosecutor here, which he has met, according to the jury. he had to prove gloss criminal negligent leading to michael jackson's death. i hope we get to hear from the jurors of what happened in the deliberation room. there were 49 witnesses. over 500 pieces of evidence. many wondered what would happen being they didn't reach a verdict on friday. >> everything we have been reading about this jury is that it has been very attentive every single day keeping copious notes, alert and well aware of everything presented to them. tom is a long time jackson attorney. he joins us this morning. tom, what is your reaction to this verdict? >> well, i think it's the right result. it's a just result. it's a good day for justice.

however, nothing is going to bring michael jackson back. however, i'm happy for the family and all those who loved michael jackson. he went way too soon. he was brilliant. we never should have lost him. this will send a message to physicians, i hope, throughout the country, just because you are treating a celebrity, don't bend your ethical obligations. propofol was administered to michael jackson. everybody brought to bear in the trial says this has been a medical, serious breach of medical ethics. tom, thank you very much. pete has legal analysis for us now. he joins us from washington. pete, the judge has a decision to make now. now that he had a unanimous decision, he has to decide what the sentence will be. >> the law in california changed hins he was charged.

the maximum penalty is four years in the state prison. bauds the prisons are so overcrowded earlier this year, the law was changed to say nonviolent first offenders, and dr. murray would quality, can serve in the county jail. l.a. county jail has an overcrowding problem. it's possible he could be sent to home detention forced to wear an ankle bracelet. he may not serve time in state prison. maybe only a limited time, if any in county jail and could serve most of the sentences at home with monitoring and the judge also has the option to put him on probation. >> all of that is possible along with him losing his license to practice medicine. pete williams, thank you so

really is inconsequential? >> it's inconsequential to me because juries are instructed not to comment on the silence of a defendant. it is inconsequential that there was an interview with the police and it would have been very, very difficult to overcome and the emotion to overcome the defense on the stand would have been difficult for him. >> in your defense, they are saying the threshold for convicting a doctor is efficient. is that why some people might have been surprised by this? >> i think who the person is, in this case, we have a doctor who was taking care of probably the most famous person ever on this planet. everyone loved michael jackson. i think there was a lot of external factors to consider here. i think juries take their oath very seriously as did this jury. who he was in the community, i think factored in. when you strip it down, when you

look at the facts, there was absolutely no explanation for the use of that medication. >> do you think the emotion that those audio tapes brought about, for people watching for the jury watching and listening to michael jackson clearly sounding drugged, do you think that impacted the jury? >> i think it had to. i think it impacted anyone who listened to that audio clip of michael jackson's voice. i's so contrary to the michael jackson, the visual we know michael jackson to be. but, it begs the question of drug addiction. it begs the question of why a doctor would give narcotics and medication and the quantity given to michael jackson with who he was and what he was suffering from in his life. >> we have heard about the potential of probation all the way to four years. but, you compared it to

hour. two penn state university officials are being charged in connection with a sex abuse case and a former assistant football coach. >> he was arrested saturday. he's charged with abusing eight young boys over a 15-year span. brian moore has the latest. >> reporter: two top university administrators surrendered to authorities refusing to report it. the athletic director is accused of lying to a grand jury about disturbing allegations focusing on defensive coordinator, jerry sandusky. >> they allowed a child predator to continue to victimize children for many, many years. >> reporter: sandusky charged with abusing eight young boys over a 15-year period when he
