throughout today's proceedings he sat expressionless. >> earlier today, the jury alerted the judge they had agreed on a verdict and the courtroom was cleared. time was given for jackson's family and others to arrive at the courthouse in downtown los angeles. this jury, a panel of seven men and five women deliberated for nine hours overall. let's get the latest now from stephanie stanton outside the courthouse in los angeles. stephanie? >> reporter: the verdict came down at 1:00 local time. in fact, here, outside the courthouse you can see some of the jackson family members leaving the courthouse as we speak. jackson fans here outside the courthouse as you might imagine. they erupted in cheers and screams when they learned dr. conrad murray will be held

responsible for the death of michael jackson. after a day and a half of deliberations, the jury came to a unanimous decision. the involuntary manslaughter case against dr. conrad myrrhry. >> we the jury find the defendant conrad robert murray guilty. >> as he has in court, throughout much of the trial, dr. murray showed little emotion as the verdict was read. jurors considered more than 300 pieces of evidence and heard from 49 witnesses including his girlfriends and patients, jackson's former employees, investigators and medical experts for each side. they heard a chilling audio tape of michael jackson in open court. when people leave my show, i want them to say, i've never seen nothing like this in my

life. >> reporter: seated in the courtroom were michael jackson's family who got the verdict they hoped for. dr. conrad murray was sent directly to jail until sentencing. he is now in the custody of authorities. the jury took eight hours to reach the verdict and sentencing is set for november 29th. that is the latest live here outside the courthouse in downtown los angeles. i'm stephanie stanton, back to you. >> thank you. stay with us, stephanie will join us at 5:15 for more reaction from the courthouse. >> a state university student charged in the stabbing death of a classmate will have to stay in jail a little longer. she made a first appearance in court. the university's president says he's angered by the violent incident. elaine joins us with the latest. >> we have learned more about the circumstances surrounding a

fight that investigators believe led to the stabbing. today, two families spent time dealing with the incident. the family is making funeral arrangements while the suspect's parents were in court to see their daughter. >> respect our privacy, it would be appreciated. the parents made thinker trip for their daughter's first court appearance. they charged her with first and second degree murder. they would only say this after the hearing. >> it's a trying matter. thank you very much. >> reporter: court documents reveal several people witnessed the encounter. it happened during a weekend party. the argument started in the off-campus home of the suspect continued outside. the victim, suffered stab wounds to her head and neck. witnesses say it all happened very fast. at a news conference this afternoon, the police refused to

answer whether alcohol was involved. >> can't speak to the current investigation. this is a homicide investigation. i's being actively investigated by the unit in allegheny county. >> university police emphasize the importance of the relationship and wanted to focus on positive things. >> i guess it's a period of not believing what happened. right now, it's like our family just -- >> reporter: this is her uncle. four years apart, he considers himself more of a brother to the physics major. the family is still trying to process their loss while planning the funeral. >> my sister is a church-driven person. i'm sure as mad as she is, she still, her heart goes out to that person that whoever did it.

>> the funeral arrangements are being finalized. no hearing on a bond date for if suspect. >> thank you. we are following developing news out of howard county where a police officer has been involved in a shooting. a man walked out of an office building carrying several weapons. workers inside this building became alarmed, called police. when the officers arrived, they refused to surrender. shots were fired. the man was hit. no word on his condition. it's not clear if the man fired his weapon. we are told no police officers were hurt. there has been yet another attempted abduction in spotsylvania county. this latest incident was over the weekend. men inside a van approached an 8-year-old girl. as pat collins reports, police

stepped up patrols. >> it happened again saturday. 4:30 in the afternoon. a little girl says men in a van tried to get her to go with them. she got scared, ran off. they drove away. these incidents have people here on edge. >> my daughters are not going outside to play because this guy is trying to snatch kids during the day. ain't no telling what he'll do. >> reporter: an action plan announced by the spotsylvania office. there have been five attempted abductions here. four in spotsylvania county, one in nearby stafford. the victims range in age from 8 to 20. the descriptions vary. the vehicles vary as well. sometimes it's a car, sometimes it's a van. what does it all mean? do you think it's possible this is a gang or group of people doing this? >> been in the business 23 years.

a fourth woman is accusing republican presidential candidate herman cain of inappropriate behavior. this is the first to come forward and tell her story. the language of her story is a bit graphic. the accusers name is sharon. she worked for the national restaurant association in chicago in 1997. she met cain when he came to chicago for a convention. she lost her job soon afterwards. she called him asking for help. she came to washington to meet cain. they had drinks and dinner. >> he suddenly reached over and put his hand on my leg under my skrirt and reached for my genitals. he grabbed my head and brought it toward his crotch. i was surprised and shocked. i said what are you doing? you know i have a boyfriend. this isn't what i came here for.

mr. cain said, you want a job, right? >> she says she told cain to stop and he did. it is important to note, nbc news has not independently confirmed the allegations. the cain campaign issued a denial of all allegations of harassment are completely false. could be an early signal about the early elections. voters go to the polls in virginia to cast their ballots in the state senate races. one of the most critical is a northern virginia-virginia seat that stretches across ashburn and into western prince william county. julie carey has the story. >> reporter: armed with campaign signs or manning the phones, the final push for voters is under way in the 13th state senate district. here dick black is trying to

now. >> reporter: the scene is more calm than it was awhile ago when the verdict was being read. still, a crazy scene here outside the courthouse. let's show you what's happening. there's still a very large crowd here outside the courthouse. people are dancing over there, cheering, holding signs, chanting, as you saw in that clip of la toya jackson. fans get very excited when they come outside the courthouse. earlier, when that verdict was read, it was unbelievable here. i mean really, the minute that verdict was read, the moment the fans heard it was a guilty verdict, we heard cheers, chanting, screams, people hugging, crying, it was a chaotic scene. this is the verdict they have been waiting to hear from the

fans perspective. >> we know he faces up to four years in prison. probation to four years. how likely is it he will serve any time at all? >> he will be serving time right now. at the end of this verdict reading, the judge demanded him in custody. the judge revoked his bail. he's in the kus di of the l.a. sheriff's department. it is our understanding he will remain behind bars until sentencing. he could be sentenced up to four years in prison. some legal analysts say the fact the judge revoked the bail, didn't give his defense a chance to let him stay out on bail until sentencing doesn't bode well for him in terms of the amount of sentence he'll be given. >> we have civil suits to come.

6:00. a former lacrosse player accused in the death of his ex-girlfriend. the judge ruled on medical record that is had been sealed and how the jurors will be selected. we have the report. >> george's family came to the court even though huguely chose to stay at the jail and not attend. he's facing charges including first degree murder, felony murder, robbery and burglary in the death of yeardley love. she was found dead in her apartment. there are conflicting reports. the defense wants to subpoena her medical records. it was originally stated love died from blunt force trauma to

the head caused by huguely. the judge will determine the records to see what might be relevant. bloody photos of love after cpr was conducted on her. the judge will rule on the photos. he okayed the questionnaires prepared to screen jurors to find out what news accounts they have seen or read or formed an opinion on the case. there's been nationwide media coverage on the case. the trial will not be broadcast on tv. the lawyers argued for a live gavel-to-gavel of the murder trial. the judge ruled he doesn't believe allowing cameras in the courtroom is in the public interest. the first degree murder trial of george huguely is set for february 5th. they would like the jury to be sequestered, isolated from news

coverage, kept in a hotel. the judge is not inclined to do that. it would be the last resort. in charlottesville, virginia, chris gordon, news 4. several blocks near dupont circle shut down because of a gas leak. it happened near q street. you could smell the gas several blocks. the hazmat team was called in after gas was smelled in the lobby. the all-clear was given and there were no injuries. occupy d.c. protesters took their march to d.c. to give statements about friday night's car crash during a rally. protesters say the car that struck three hit another woman moments before. protesters were cited for jaywalking and the driver was not charged. the d.c. chief says they have been increasingly confrontational. they relouised a youtube video

showing protesters being violent and confrontational. they are using children and inside the convention center using children as blockades. we'll have more coming up at 6:00. the hilton hotel chain joined a list of companies hoping to redevelop the old post office in d.c. they want to turn it into a 245 room luxury hotel. it would feature four restaurants and high-end retail shops. it's on pennsylvania avenue between the white house and capital. half a dozen companies made proposals to develop the property including donald trump hotels. they are considering the proposals and says it will likely make a selection by november 17th. a dispute between a church and a driving range could be headed to court. officials at faith evangelical church say every year thousands

a lost baby bear cub caused quite a stir yesterday in southern virginia. take a good look. the cub got separated in port smith and climbed up a tree. police blocked off the area. the bear climbed back down and ran off into the woods. area nonprofits are hurting in this economy. they hope to get a lot of help from the campaign called get to the max. it's a 24 hour marathon designed to raise $3 million online. pat lawson muse tells us about it. >> reporter: in northwest washington, these 1-year-olds enjoy hours of music and social interaction. they spend days here at the bright beginnings child development center, they are

the lives of thousands of people in firm or unable to see. >> there's a new effort to honor guide dogs for the work they do and the loyalty they share with their partners. tom sherwood reports. >> reporter: michael was on capitol hill to talk about his guide dog who died this summer. on 9/11, he helped him down nine flights of steps before the building collapsed. >> somehow being a hero is just doing your job. guide dogs just do their job. we really do, as a society, strongly underestimate what our dogs can do for us and what we can and should be doing for our dogs, our heroes. >> he spoke at a ceremony to honor the new, first ever annual dog awards that focus on civilian work and focus on the dangerous work of military dogs. >> we are here to celebrate our
