governor bob mcdonnell set an am beneficiaries coal, seizing krot of the senate from democrats. northern virginia republicans had hoped to lead the way but as you can see from this emptying room from this quiet room, there is little to celebrate here tonight. it appears they will fall short of their goal. earlier in the evening here, former governor now u.s. senate candidate george allen fired up his fellow republicans. that's when the races were still close and votes being counted. as the evening went on the results came in and showed northern virginia democrats targeted seem to be holding on to that your seats. here now from a disappointed fairfax county gop chairman. >> you have to give the democrats credit the way they redistricted their senate seats. and they did make sure that it could withstand republican surge and republican energy and looks like that held up tonight. >> reporter: fairfax county democrats gathered on the other side of the county near fair oaks. they say that if the results we are seeing at this hour hold up, they will hold their ground. and will have fought off this

♪ ♪ in the name of jesus a football field played host to a flood of emotion as family and friends shared memories of two boys killed in a horrible car accident. aaron gilchrist spoke with the boy's pear and joins us live from landover. aaron? >> reporter: doreen, he and his boys were attach at the hip. tomorrow he will bury his children. tonight, though, he spent time with their friends and teammates and their family april talking about how those two little boys brought so much joy to so many lives. hundreds huddled in the cold on the community football field where 11-year-old anthony and 2-year-old delonte were fixtures. anthony played for the prince george's chargers and a leader. the boy's father says they were filled with joy. >> he was energetic and anthony was -- going to be somebody in his life. i take pride in all of that. >> reporter: the brothers died last friday when their mother's car was hit from behind after a fender bender with another car.

metro workers took a rather unusual step tonight. they shut down an escalator at a busy station. they are trying to find a lost treasure. >> reporter: jim, that lost treasure is a ring valued at more than $12,000. now the owner was actually walking down the escalator and dropped it and is really upset about this. crews tell me it is easier to find a need until a haystack than it is to find this ring. >> i was devastated. >> reporter: she was dispinted when she glanced down. something missing on her hand. >> my finger keeps rubbing like waiting. >> reporter: her diamond and sapphire ring that looks similar to this one valued at $12,000 is

'96 when the big comet was passing overhead. that one was there for quite a few days.

this one was in and out in ten minutes. looking good. although things are starting to cool off just a little bit across the area. we are seeing temperatures in the 30s in some areas. but on 50s in others. big temperature range out there right now. high temperature today got up to 68 degrees. low this morning of 41. yes, another great day today. and i think we have one more in store before we start to see big changes. 49 degrees current temperature out there right now at the airport. winds are calm. dew point is around 43. that's about as low as we can get in the d.c. area tonight. 43, 44. probably around that number tonight. already down to 36 in manassas. 39 in winchester. 37 in culpeper. hagerstown, though, still at 51 degrees. little bit of wind up there. little bit of elevation. and we are seeing that warmer temperature right there also in and annapolis, one of the warmer spots at 48 along the chesapeake bay. showing things all clear now. that's not the case to the twist. a very potent storm system bringing tornadoes to the south

and snow towards parts of the plains states. that storm will move our way over the next couple of days and it will change our weather by the day thursday. so tomorrow, one more great day. we saw high pressure today. we will see the high pressure area tomorrow meaning plenty of sunshine. nice mild temperatures. and then things change. high pressure really breaks down. and we get sandwiched between the cold front to the west and moisture to the east. and that's going to allow important shower activity during the day on thursday. that's not going to be a washout. we will see a good chance for you to use the umbrellas and behind it, much colder air. cold enough for some snow back along theal gainin front and into portions of west virginia. very chilly and windy on our friday. winds could be gusting upwards of 20 to 30 miles an hour on friday. that is with sunshine. not all bad. clear skies, patchy fog tomorrow morning. 35 in some of the coolest areas. 45 inside the city. tomorrow morning, we will see plenty of shine. that will help to lead nice temperatures in the afternoon. 64 to about 68 degrees.
