>> i'm pat lawson muse. i wish i had done more are statements by coach joe paterno announcing plans to walk away from the game at the end of the season. it comes at the end of a child sex abuse scandal. police say it was known about but never reported. jay gray has the latest. >> reporter: joe paterno has been part of this for four decades. now, plagued by controversy, he announced this will be his last season. joe paterno wept openly as he told first the staff, then the players this would be his final year as coach at penn state. in a written statement, he said he made the decision to retire to make things as easy as possible on the board of trustees who have more important matters to address. this is a tragedy. it is one of the great sorrows

of my life. with the benefit of hindsight, i wish i had done more. an artist removed the face of jery sandusky downtown today in the wake he sexually abused eight young boys over a 13-year period. one of them taking place in the athletic facility at the university. as the question of a cover up lingers here. >> it's going to be a scar on penn state. >> reporter: the school's athletic director was indicted as well. he was forced to step down. there continue to be indications graham will resign or be fired by the end of the day. >> it's going to take time and the efforts of everybody involved to get back the name we deserve. >> reporter: a reputation paterno worked so hard for over six decades.

many don't understand why when he was warned, he only reported it to superiors at the school, not police or parents. >> joe blew it. it's not about going to higher ups, it's going to authorities. >> reporter: authorities that now continue their investigation at penn state. the board of trustees is continuing their investigation as well. among the issues, they are said to be considering is whether paterno will be allowed to finish out the season. in state college, pennsylvania, jay gray, news 4. >> along with jerry sandusky, two penn state officials were charged for failing to report the incident to police. joe paterno's retirement is a big talker on the nbc washington facebook page today. >> many reactions. denise says they need to fire him. how can you not defend innocent children. >> based on this stuff going on, he needs to retire effective yesterday. >> paterno may not have felt it

was his responsibility since he was not the athletic director. it's anyone's responsibility to turn anyone in like that. i don't feel bad for him at all. >> heather says why bring joe down for something he was not involved in. he reported it when he found out. >> thanks if you sent your comments. what did it take for jurors to find dr. conrad murray guilty in the death of michael jackson. for the first time, we are hearing what happened behind the scenes as the jurors deliberated. there were contentious moments during the two days of deliberations. most of the jurors decided he was guilty on the first day. some jurors didn't believe he was solely responsible, though. one convincing argument, the drug addiction led him to shop for a doctor who would give him the propofol he craved.

dr. murray supplied him with the drug he wanted. murray talked about his responsibility in jackson's death. >> don't you bear some responsibility? the propofol was in that room because you prescribed it to him. >> this is the situation. it's difficult to think i met michael with a situation where he was absolutely having used that substance long before i got there. >> your portion of it, were you right to leave him in a situation where he had the opportunity to inject himself? >> well, i'm going to say that was not a forseeable situation. if mr. jackson -- >> it wasn't? >> no. had i known what i know today in retrospe retrospect, mr. jackson was an addict. they behave in a way that is unreasonable.

news 4s tracee wilkins was at the firehouse for his first day back on the job. >> reporter: it's chuck ryan's first call in 212 days. he says he's ready for what the day may bring. >> going to have to do another one of these searches and possible rescues. how do you think you are going to feel as that moment presents itself? >> no different. it's just, you know, you thought of it before and sometimes people get injured. you don't want to, but i'm thankful i'm able to come back to work. my injuries weren't career injury. >> reporter: the injuries covered 40% of his body. he nearly lost four of his fingers. it started at this house fire last april. ryan was one of five firefighters injured when they ran into the burning home to see if anyone was trapped. it turned out, the house was

empty. ryan's burns were the most extensive. after 49 days in the hospital and a number of surgeries and months of therapy, he's back to work today. how are you feeling? >> i feel great. i do. hopefully, this will be the next part, you know, to move on past the injuries. so, i just want to keep moving forward. >> reporter: maurice stews pleaded guilty to starting a series of fires in d.c. during a three-year period including the fire that injured ryan. he's facing similar charges in prince george's county. his focus is not on this future, but other strangers he has yet to meet and save. >> i was grateful he was caught and off the street. he can't hurt nobody else. it doesn't personally affect me. like i said, i can't think about it. i just keep looking toward
