those words, part of a statement by legendary football coach joe paterno. today, announcing his plans to retire at the end of the season following the sex abuse scandal that involved his defensive coordinator, jerry sandusky. he abused at least eight boys over a 15 year period. paterno is devastated by developments in the case and former players are speaking out. >> it's going to take time and the efforts of everybody involved in the university to get back the name we deserve. >> i think joe blew it. you see a situation like that, you go to authorities. >> penn state's president may also lose his job because of this scandal. there are reports he will resign or be fired by the end of the day. there's a big rally at george mason university to protest the gun policy. it's an event that brought

together gun propon ents. all with different opinions about the school policies. jane watrel joins us from the fairfax campus with more on the story. >> reporter: the rally was civil and respectful despite the fact both sides couldn't be farther apart when it comes to the issue of gun control. >> maybe if they were carrying a firearm in a classroom, they could have stopped him sooner. >> reporter: they explain why a gun ban should be lifted at george mason university. several students disagree. >> the fact that the gun is there means there's a chance of the gun being used and potentially killing someone. >> no student or employee can carry guns. it's a policy mason officials say limits the number of guns on campus. >> something inside. you have people in a crowded

they won the biggest majority in history in the house. it appears they have achieved their goal of winning the senate control away from democrats for a power sweep. one seat may be subject for a recount. all of culpeper near charlottesville and parts of fredericksburg. julie carey was there as they began rechecking the results. >> 281. 156. >> reporter: in spotsylvania county, they spent the day canvassing the vote checking for errors in the senate race. a race that will decide the ball lons of power in richmond. victory with an 86 vote margin after an initial incorrect vote. today's canvass revealed more mistakes. when corrected, they boosted the republican total.

sometimes people get injured. you don't want to but i'm thankful i'm able to come back to work. my injuries were not career ending. >> he was burned on nearly half of his body but he is back. chuck ryan returned to his job as a d.c. firefighter. this is video of him being rescued after he was -- rescuing, rather an injured worker this afternoon. he was doing the rescuing. seven months ago, he was injured in a fire at 48th place and northeast. he almost lost four fingers. fire fighting is in his blood. there was no doubt he would return. a man pleaded guilty for setting the fires. student athletes at the university of maryland are upset about possible program cutbacks

coming that could affect several athletic programs. dan hellie has more on this. >> maryland athletic department set to lose almost $5 million this year. because of the deficit, the university will likely eliminate as many as ten sports, more than a third of the varsity sports at the school. kevin anderson met with the men and women's diving team to let them know their programs have been recommended for eliminat n elimination. they will make a final decision in the coming weeks. >> yeah. it's emotional. there were tears. people, at first, didn't belief it i think. it still hasn't set in comple completely. it's a recommendation that's gone to the president. there's no final decision, yet. we won't know until the end of the month or sooner. right now, it's almost worse. we know it's been sent to him. we know what they want to do. we are waiting to hear the words

what an officer says may be the easiest arrest ever. pat collins is live at the white house with details on the story. pat? >> reporter: this guy spent 15 years avoiding cops. today, he made it easy. he did everything but handcuff himself. november 9, 2011, parked police beat number 145, la fayette square, an officer on duty. 0600. his assignment -- >> my job is to patrol the area of la fayette park, keep the park free of criminal activity. >> did you see criminal activity? >> no, i did not, sir. >> reporter: that was soon to change. 10:16 a.m. he was approached by a man wearing a red shirt, black pants and white sneakers. he says he needs some police help. he said i want to turn myself in

who served, how about hockey? >> i like that. this is another cool story of wounded warriors making a big difference. 2:00 on saturday at the prince william ice center in woodbridge, virginia, george mason hockey club hosts the wounded warriors. for one warrior, the chance to lace them up with fellow servicemen helped him heal. there's no hiding behind the mask for michael. not many stickers earn this much respect. a rookie between the pipes for the wounded warriors team. he's a combat veteran. back in 2006 in iraq, his team came under heavy machine gunfire in a battle that knocked him unconscious. >> i crossed the street to get in a better position to get an aim. two marines were coming across as i was covering for them. second rate pass wearing the

helmet. i pulled away from the wall. it knocked me back and they drug me off to the side and continued to fight until we found the machine gun. >> reporter: shrapnel missed his eyes. he was recruited by the wounded warriors and returned to the game he loved but to a new position. >> we were low on goalies. mike is the type of person who steps up. he's done a great job in that. it's amazing what he can do and learn. he's 40 years old. he's been playing his entire life. i can't say enough great things about him. >> the thing i like about what we are doing, it's veterans helping veterans. i think it's important. we are getting help from other organizations as well. the nhl and washington has been a great supporter of ours.

veterans helping veterans out. >> he wasn't socialable as most people thought he was. he played hockey. his kids played hockey. over time, he developed a brotherhood. it's like he was in his old unit again. he was happy to play. he'll do anything for any person, not just stand-up for him on the ice. the typical hockey stuff. >> over here. start with the face-off. >> saturday is an exhibition game but the respect and competitiveness will count. >> they put their lives on the line for their country and, you know, we want to show our fans and the people of northern virginia that, you know, they mean a lot to us. >> george mason isn't going to let up on us. we are here for practice tonight. we are going to try to get information from the team to have an advantage on saturday. >> they don't want your pity or

work schedule. it began with a phone call to police dispatch. she was not happy with her husband working nights at the airport. she didn't like being home by herself. when dispatch told her there was nothing they could do. she became mad they wouldn't help stating okay, i blow it. i blow up. i blow up ten planes. then she hung up the phone. police say she called back again speaking with a sergeant, they say she didn't want her husband working nights but denied making threats. she was arrested. as we knocked on the door, he saw us and ran to another part of the house. her neighbor -- >> i don't know what to think. >> reporter: he was shocked when he saw the home surrounded by cops. over at the airport, officials won't say exactly what her husband does, but he doesn't work for port authority or tsa.
