paterno is under criticism for not going to police after learning of possible child sex abuse against a former assistant coach. tonight, we have team coverage. we begin with jay gray in state college, pennsylvania with the fallout. jay? >> reporter: hey there, doreen. a sense of calm here but still shock on the campus as many are concerned about what's next for penn state. >> we are. >> penn state. >> reporter: a new era begins at penn state with an interim coach on unsteady ground. >> i take the job with mixed emotions due to the situation. >> reporter: the scars are still deep that jerry sandusky is a sexual predator, abusing young boys. >> how can they just ig mother it. this was a child. it's unconceivable you would not

do something about it. >> reporter: legendary coach joe paterno was part of an alleged cover up. >> for the most part, students looked at him as a figure head, as a father, as a grandfather, as an icon. to see him go in this manner really disappointed a lot of people. >> reporter: disappointment and anger that poured into the streets. >> joe paterno is no longer the head football coach, effective immediately. >> reporter: as word of the firing spread across the campus late last night. the violence gave way to the realization paterno is gone. students are left to wonder what comes next. >> i don't know how the campus is going to move forward. >> reporter: the new coach says he and his team will have to help shape the future of the battered institution. >> i'm going to find a way to restore the confidence and start a healing process. >> reporter: a tougher challenge

than any he or his players have ever faced on the field. a challenge that, like the pain and ongoing investigations will continue for a very long time. live in state college, pennsylvania, i'm jay gray. back to you now. >> the big question tonight, what's next for penn state. chris gordon continues the coverage at beaver stadium with a look at this weekend's game. chris? >> reporter: well, good evening. i have been on campus a couple hours. you get the feeling the students realize this is bigger than the firing of joe paterno. it involves allegations of a cover up of child sex abuse. now, behind me you can see a tradition of penn state university. it's called paternoville. it's named for joe paterno. 82 tents erected by the stadium. they have spent all week since monday out in the cold, eating, sleeping and studying, then going to classes.

all to get front row seats for this weekend's game against nebraska. this is paternoville. a lot of these students are now preparing for what that game means now that coach joe paterno will not be on the sidelines. we talked to some of them this evening. >> the game is saturday for joe and the victims are going to wear blue. penn state to show our support for the victims of sexual abuse and support joe we want him one more game, let him stay. >> the focus should be on the victims not joe paterno or penn state university, smearing the name. >> reporter: do you think there will be more violence? >> i hope not. that was ridiculous. i was not part of that. i was here with the other campers. we sat here and cried. they probably didn't know what was going on.

>> i'm numb to some of it. sadness, disbelief. >> reporter: what shocks you, the firing or the children who were abused? >> all of it, really. the victims my heart goes out to them and their families. it's awful. >> reporter: there will be a candle light vigil tomorrow night on campus for the victims of child abuse. people here tell me when they say we are penn state that doesn't just mean football and the tradition of football. it means 156 years of history and talent and academic excellence and tens of thousands of students and faculty and alumni who are looking now for the future of penn state. we're live tonight on campus, back to you in the studio. >> chris gordon reporting. thank you. pennsylvania governor tom corbin held a news conference this evening. he said he lost confidence in his ability to lead. the governor said the focus

there's no sign of him and no ransom requests, either. >> reporter: they believe wilson ramos is still alive. so far, no known ransom demand. wilson ramos, the catcher for the washington nationals kidnapped at gunpoint by four men in his home in venezuela. an orange suv linked to the kidnapping found today. they say it was stolen early wednesday morning and set on fire before it was abandoned. this, today, from the venezuelan minister of justice. a team of high level specialists are going to help capture those responsible for the crime. how much trouble is he in? >> probably a lot. all the kidnapping gangs are different. there's so many of them.

i'm sure the venezuelan government is going to do their utmost to get him back. this is a public relations disaster for them. >> that's eric langer the director for latin american studies at georgetown. he's all too familiar with kidnappings in venezuela. his wife is from there. the kidnappings are frequent there? >> yes. 250 to 300 in one state where my wife is from, the western most state, one of the most populous ones. they happen all the time. >> reporter: they talked about the incident today at the state department. >> he's not a u.s. citizen. he is is a green card holder. it's a great concern to us. we did cite in our country specific information the very real dangers of kidnapping and violent crime in venezuela. we condemn these kinds of violent acts.

>> reporter: he is 24 years old. he played for the washington nationals last year. he was in venezuela to play winter ball. the statement today from the nationals. our foremost concern is with wilson ramos and his family. our thoughts are with them at this time. both major league baseball and the washington nationals have been instructed to make no further comment. now investigators have sketches of some of the suspects. so far, no arrests. no sign of wilson ramos. back to you. >> pat collins, thank you. despite his embarrassing memory lapse on live tv, texas governor rick perry will not quit the republican race for the white house. steve handelsman who was in michigan for the debate is back on capitol hill. >> reporter: it was a shocker in michigan and on tv.

let her name be attached to one of the sets of charges from the restaurant association. she's one of the ones that got a settlement. she is not actually appeared in public like sharon appeared in public. her lawyer says what she wants is a news conference where all the cain accusers would present what she calls a body of evidence. sharon says i'm in. i'll participate. now, there's news karen failed to get ahold of at least two other women. the whole idea of a mass news conference is now on hold says her lawyer. it's got to be good news for herman cain. >> steve handelsman with the latest. thank you, steve. in the state of virginia republicans are now in control. democrat ed hulk conceded the race. after the votes were canvassed vice president reeves won.

occupy demonstrations led to more than three dozen arrests now. 32 people were arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest

and failing to dispurse. another seven, including a faculty member were arrested earlier in the day during another clash between authorities and protesters trying to set up tents there. perspective economist was named the new prime minister of greece today. he'll lead a government that's giving strict approval of an aid package that will save greece of a bankruptcy. he said all greeks must contribute to solving the problems. rescuers searching for problems after an earthquake. at least 12 people killed and dozens more hurt as john ray reports. it's the second major quake to hit the region in three weeks. >> reporter: this really is a returning nightmare for the

people of this town. dumping as many as 100 beneath the rubble in the town sent to him. this is after the last major earthquake. emergency teams were on hand and could begin the rescue operation straight away. they have been working all night and will work throughout tonight. here at what was a six-story hotel, they are working to release fellow aid workers in town to help cope with the aftermath of the last earthquake. fears are heaped upon fears here. scuffles between locals and police. three weeks after the earthquake, thousands of people here in tents. the temperatures are plummeting. now, up to the second major quake. many people are worrying when, if ever, it will be safe to return to their homes.

as the storm system moves out. you can see what i'm talking about. lake enhanced snow. not the first time we have seen it this season. we are going to talk about it for the day tomorrow back to the west and the mountains. northwesterly winds tomorrow create chilly and windy conditions. we are going to see sunshine on our veterans day and chilly conditions with most areas staying in the upper 40s all day long. many areas could start with temperatures or at least windchills in the mid-20s. a very cold start to our friday. still cold for the start on saturday, too. mostly cloudy, showers to the east. 48 dropping down to 45 degrees. sun did go down tonight before 5:00. mostly clear. breezy and cold tomorrow morning. 33 to 39 degrees. with the winds at 10 to 15 miles an hour, you are talking a windchill between 25 and 32. that includes the district. i think we could see windchills

it is amazing nobody got hurt after this crash in oregon. a police officer was on his way to a call when he hit another car and veered off into a house.

it happened in september. investigators released the final report on the crash saying the officer was not responsible. there was a man inside the house when it happened but he wasn't hurt, either. a boy narrowly escaped injury when hit by a metro bus. this video comes from a camera on the bus. it was going occupy 29th street. suddenly, an 8-year-old kid stepped in front of the bus. right there. he threw up his hands as the bike rack hit him. fortunately, the bus was going 15 miles per hour. the driver of the bus has more than 30 years of experience. we're told operators are used to close calls. actual contact like that is rare. police in buoy say they have made an arrest in a robbery involving a group of girl scouts. it happened at a walmart. the girls were selling their

the police in state college, pennsylvania are looking at video from the riots. they want to identify student that is damaged property. thousands of students stormed the streets in support of joe paterno after he and the president of the university were

fired by the board of trustees. they did that because of the two officials handseling of or mishandling of child sex abuse allegations against a former assistant coach. the suv used to kidnap a nationals catcher was found last night. his abductors vehicle was set on fire before it was abandoned in a nearby town. so far, no ransom demands. >> rick perry is trying to get past a brain freeze from the debate on cnbc. he could not remember one of the government agencies he wanted to cut if selected. he fumbled his words and gave up. he went on the "today" show this morning calling it a simple mistake. he promises to stay in the race despite the gaffe. it was an emotional day in a

montgomery county courtroom. a young man pleaded guilty in a crash that killed three of his friends. >> alcohol was a factor. darcy spencer reports. >> i didn't realize how much i had until i lost it. >> reporter: these are the older and younger brothers of johnny hoover. >> i can only say that it is a truly great loss. >> reporter: this is a man who was behind the wheel, 20-year-old kevin coffee. he pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash. he had been drinking alcohol before crashing the toyota corolla. he faces up to 40 years in pris. >> it was a horrific accident that affected thousands of lives. it could have been any of our children. >> reporter: he hit a utility pole. the victims who died were spencer and hailey, both 18 as

well as the 19-year-old johnny hoover. in court, prosecutors said coffee's blood alcohol was .16, twice the legal limit. that test was taken three hours after the crash. it's how long it took police to track him down. >> it's an awful, awful thing. >> reporter: the group attended two parties that night. one of the homeowners came home and found the group drinking and told them to leave. coffee got behind the wheel even though friends told him not to. the residents should not have let them back on the road. this is a plea for the parents behind me in this case. if you come home and find the situation found in this incident, don't put those young people out on the road. >> reporter: he remains free on bond pending his sentencing. the attorney will seek a substantial amount of prison time. in rockville, darcy spencer, news 4. there's no plea agreement in

the case. it will be up to the judge to determine how much of the 40 year prison sentence he will serve. on this eve of veterans day, more fall out about the mishandled remains of america's war dead. today, there are calls for an investigation to how the body parts of fallen service members ended up in a landfill in virginia. derrick ward reports. >> reporter: it went on between 2003 and 2008. some remains of fallen servicemen and women arriving at dover air force base were disposed of in a landfill. officials say the practice involved several limbs and dna material. the families were asked if the remains could be disposed of. they were cremated. disposing of them in a landfill

is inappropriate. >> it's the type of damage, how do you repair that to the families and loved ones. >> reporter: often amputated limbs at hospitals is disposed of the same way. this practice seems dishonorable. >> we are obligated to do better. >> we have to be fully accountable in how we treat service members. >> reporter: leon panetta called for a deeper investigation into what happened and what happens now at dover. >> none of us will be satisfied until we have proven to the families of fallen heroes, we have taken the step to protect honor and dignity which their loved ones deserve. >> we intend to get to the bottom of it and to ensure that we continue to improve processes.

washington monument this morning to seal up cracks left by the august earthquake. the national park service says it will stop water from getting into the landmark when it rains. the engineers are the same ones who evaluated the damage in september. they plan to use a foam joint filler when the work begins next week. >> winter is setting in. we feel like we have to make some emergency repairs. we continue to have water seeping in through the cracks from the result of the earthquake in august. >> they are expected to take five days and cost about $240,000. the federal emergency management agency will help with repairs in louisa county. the high schools sustained the most damage and are currently closed as part of the disaster relief. fema will help recover costs.

good evening. welcome back, everybody. i'm meteorologist doug kammerer in storm center 4 watching the cooldown now. temperature is at 48 degrees. the temperatures have stabilized a bit. that's the good news. not reporting wind gusts yet. i think the wind will pick up into the day tomorrow. right now, the rain is to the east of the i-95 corridor. that's good news. you'll continue to see shower activity for a half hour to hour or so. overnight, 34 in gaithersburg and leesburg. 40 in fredericksburg. washington coming in with a temperature of 39. add in the little bit of wind. not a lot overnight, but a little bit and windchills in the mid-20s overnight to the 32 degrees mark in the city.

other smokers. the majority of all smokers started as a teenager. they started a nationwide crackdown on stores that sell tobacco to minors. banning cars in wisconsin avenue. the idea was tossed around during a meeting of the neighborhood commission. according to a report in the georgetown dish, it came up as an offhand remark. several others supported the idea saying it could bring families and businesses together. one said make it car-free every sunday. secret to happiness could be a long ride home from work. can you believe that? it's according to to researchers in sweden. they found people who commute more than an hour are happier than those with a shorter commute and those who take

public transportation. researchers say people with long commutes take more tranquil route that is go through the country side, which they may be able to do in sweden. it's more difficult in urban areas in the united states. those who take public transportation get less sleep and arrive at work more stressed out. more than the people who drive-through traffic. the study says it is even worse for people who bike to work. >> the only reason you want a longer commute is if you don't want to see who you see when you get home. it's the only reason you like to commute. >> they don't commute on the beltway. >> it is sweet. it's not d.c. >> it's not here. what's up. coming up in sports the capitols hope to correct their losing ways. kyle shanahan

involving jerry sandusky rocked the football program. paterno will not be coaching for the first time in 60 years. they will be led by tom bradley, named the interim head coach last night. he's spoken with paterno but wouldn't give details of the conversation. he had a lot of praise for the former head coach. >> i take this job with very mixed emotions due to the situation. coach paterno meant more to me than anybody except my father. many of you know him as a great football coach. i had the privilege and honor to work with him, spend time with him and he's had such a dynamic impact on so many, so many, i'll say it again, so many people and players lives. it's with great respect that i speak of him and am proud to say

that i work for him. >> assistant coach, mike mcquery will remain on staff. he was a graduate student when he saw sandusky rape a 10-year-old boy. he was the one that relayed the information to paterno. the board of trustees ask he not be on the sideline for this weekend's game. they have been peppered with questions about the scandal. the school's all-time leading rusher took to twitter to answer questions. he said i have been getting angry tweets saying no one is paying attention to the real victims in this, the kids. i agree. i don't think just because the current and former players aren't tweeting about them doesn't mean we are not sorry for them. we are shocked by this whole thing. we, like everyone else never thought this could happen. joe was a very influential

person in your lives. this has distracted us from the victims. rain.org raises money to help victims of sexual abuse. so far, they have received $27,000 from penn state alums. redskins head coach mike shanahan revealed he told his son kyle not to come to the redskins. the head coach thought his son was in an ideal situation with their high flying offense and he would have to start over in washington. today, we asked kyle about his father's statements. >> i think my dad understands the nfl and the situation i was in in houston, a very good established quarterback. coming to an unknown. being the son of the boss. i think he understood it wouldn't be easy. i think he made sure to say that to make sure it's something i

unique world war i memorial on the national mall is getting a new look. tom sherwood that has report. >> reporter: as the duke ellington high school band played military music, the 1931 war memorial for citizens killed in world war i was rededicated. for decades they saw the memorial lie in disrepair. while almost unnoticed, it all came later. world war ii, vietnam and the korean memorials. >> it never should have fallen into disrepair. let's celebrate the fact it now has been restored. >> reporter: local leaders hope to renew new interest in the memorial with concerts and ralli rallies. >> this is the only memorial put on the national mall by the local citizens of the district of columbia who served in every war. at the time it was built, the

citizens didn't have equal rights. they don't have voting rights. today, the memorial is restored and they still don't have those. >> reporter: it was a day to honor the 500 men and women inscribed on the walls. uniquely for 1931, not segregated by race or gender. >> so many times people drive by and jog by and don't know this is here. ♪ >> reporter: the restored memorial done with $4 million in federal funds is expected to bring more attention to tourists. tom sherwood, news 4, washington. coming up on the broadcast tonight at 11:00, the first comment from the white house on the child sexual abuse scandal at penn state.
