nebraska. chris gordon joins us live from university park with more on this. chris? >> reporter: well, good evening. we are live tonight at old main, the lawn in front of the administration building the heart of penn state campus. thousands of people are expected here tonight for a vigil and moment of silence for the victims of child sex abuse. these penn state students came up with the idea of a candle light vigil the day before the student uprising in state college over the firing of football coach joe paterno for not notifying police about information that his assistant coach sexually abused young boys. >> these allegations of abuse are horrifying. we want to put the focus on the victims here. they really need our support. >> it's a line of our alma mater.

>> reporter: students have been challenged by this week's events. >> if there was a cover up, maybe they did the right thing. not everybody knows the whole story. i think there has to be more information exposed to comment on something like that. >> reporter: they are preparing for saturday's game against nebraska selling tribute shirts to thank coach paterno who is not calling the shots from the sidelines for the first time in 46 years. bob and becky of alexandria, virginia bought a second home here in state college. >> we are sad about what happened. there's no doubt about that. we feel very much for the victims. but, my personal opinion is, i think the media has really pushed this issue and is making joe paterno look like something he's not. we very much love the man. we hold him very dear to our hearts. to me, he's still an idol to me.

of our nation. ♪ the president noted 1 million americans will be returning to civilian life in five years. he urged employers to hire them. president obama and if first lady hosted a breakfast for veterans at the white house. as we celebrate our soldiers today who fought overseas, the battle they are fighting here to find a job continues and is growing. julie carey spoke to local soldiers about the job search. she's live at the national cemetery. julie? >> reporter: hundreds of people visited. many from the wars in iraq and afghanistan. for too many of them, instead of going back to work on monday, they will be out looking for a job. some 240,000 iraq and afghanistan vets across the country are out of work. the senate passed legislation that is providing a little bit of hope. from the front lines to the

unemployment line, it's a harsh reality for iraq and afghanistan veterans. finding a job after leaving the military can be hard for wounded warriors. visiting arlington national cemetery, he served in iraq, then went on medical leave in 2005 because of injuries and the effect of five concussions. for years, finding the right job was nearly impossible. >> they don't want to take a chance on veterans. they don't know what's going to happen down the road. is the condition going to get worse, are they going to be able to do the job. m 1 for vets organizes shooting competitions for wounded warriors. they hope the new legislation hiring will ease the struggle for others. >> i love the thought of it, to see where it goes and how businesses take it into factors is going to be interesting to see. >> reporter: this maryland vet who spent time in iraq was out

of work for years until he found an employer who understood his ptsd. his boss, a doctor and pharmacist. >> he didn't know what he was getting into until i talked to him. we had an open discussion about it. he was willing to work with me. >> reporter: so far, so good? >> so far so good and they hired to other veterans since. >> reporter: retired on october 3rd. he's already landed a new job as a truck driver but says it was because he was willing to take a pay cult to do it. >> nobds is going to hand you that job. i started out in the bottom and worked my way to the top. a civilian workplace is the same animal. >> reporter: he does not plan to spend the rest of his career behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler. he's going to work up. back to you now. >> julie carey, thank you.

d.c. officials say a settlement in principle has been reached in a $100 million civil lawsuit against the district. the family of rollins sued the city for the wrongful death of their son in 2007. police shot and killed him for allegedly stealing a dirt bike. police said the 14-year-old fired at him. they were cleared of criminal wrong doing. no gun was found at the scene. the terms of the settlement have not been released. sources tell news 4 it's for less than $1 million. >> i didn't cross the line. i didn't cross the line! >> occupy vermont protesters

clashed with police. they were angry because authorities closed the park where they have been in camp for a month. police had to close the park to investigate the death of a protester who apparently committed suicide. when officers tried to arrest one, the other occupiers confronted police. the mayor eventually moved in and persuaded police to let them go. >> unruly demonstrations after the violence last weekend. no public safety problems with the protesters. the protesters are mainly peaceful and pursuing their right to dmon straight. tom sherwood is here with more. >> this city escaped all the violence seen in other cities. the confrontation at the

convention center friday night disrupted traffic, brought complaints police weren't patrolling the streets. they issued statements warning of tougher enforcement in the wake of those incidents. not everyone agrees the protests are getting more violent. >> do you think they are unsafe now? >> well, no. no, i don't. what i have seen around freedom plaza has not struck me as dangerous or public safety threat. ♪ >> on the politics hour on wamu radio, d.c. council said he thought the convention center was an exception maybe too few officers on hand. >> something happened at the convention center last friday night. there were a lot of protesters. there was friction between protesters and traffic. what happened friday night was clearly a public safety issue. in terms of the protests in

pile of leaves? why does greyhound charge a fee if the ticket purchaser isn't traveling. liz crenshaw joins us with all the answers. happy friday. >> nice to see you, jim handly. >> mark says he's confused about red boxes new price increase. why exactly is it raising prices from $1 to $1.20 per movie per night. >> this is an interesting one. the 20 cent price increase is due to rising operational costs including increased debit card fees. remember the fee merchants pay every time you swipe a debit card is capped. most transactions cost merchants less. some are charging 22 cents for every debit transaction.

red box is paying 22 cents and they are passing on that charge to you. that's what happened with that fee. >> interesting. >> i know. second question comes from twitter and a viewer named tim. greyhound charges an extra fee if the credit card holder who buys the ticket isn't actually the passenger. why do they charge that extra fee? >> it's all about fees. we called greyhound. they charge an $18 gift ticket fee if the person purchasing the ticket isn't listed at the traveler. greyhound says they charge the fee because they get a high number of charge back costs that cost the company money. it happens if the card is used fraudulently and it happens when the ticket purchaser is not listed at the traveler. rather than passing on the fee to all its customers, it's reserved for those who purchase tickets for others. because of fraud, they add that fee.

darcy? >> reporter: this game is going to get under way tomorrow evening. today, we went to the university of maryland and talked to a lot of students. as you can imagine, there's a lot of opinions out there. they say this is impacting college football but hope it won't affect it in a bad way long term. at fedex field, the gridiron is ready for one of the biggest college football games in the nation. notre dame taking on the university of maryland. >> i hope we stand a chance. we haven't had much success in a couple weeks. >> reporter: it's the first college weekend since the firing of joe paterno. students are weighing in. >> it will make head coaches more responsible for what their staff are doing. >> we caught up with this grad who agreed, paterno had to go but says it could have been handled better? >> reporter: do you think it could huff penn state in terms of recruitment? >> i hope it doesn't. it may.

routines. the band and orchestra director will be rooting for both schools tomorrow. he's a former terp and was a drum major at the university of maryland. the national cathedral is preparing for a grand reopening. they are scheduled to reopen tomorrow. the consecration of a new bishop on saturday. the first church service is sunday. along with the reopening comes a new exhibit. it shows how much damage that 5.8 quake caused. >> we have a combination of artifacts, stone work removed from the building and traditional exhibit panels which show the scientific perspective what the earthquake did to a gothic building like ours, like the cathedral is. >> it's been closed for ten weeks now. repairs are expected to cost $20

one of the people who wants to start growing medical marijuana in the district says neighbors have nothing to worry about. he's talking to the news 4 i team about his plans. city councilmembers are starting to weigh in. tisha. >> too many cultivation centers want to open in his ward, ward five. he's planning to introduce emergency legislation that will limit the number of centers in his ward. a growing number of officials say the centers could improve safety. montgomery sibley is taking us on a tour through unmarked passages in three locked doors. >> you can't get into this facility except through this door. there are cameras inside and

outside. >> behind the door, he and four other applicants teamed up, hoping to grow medical marijuana. he says strict zoning laws and cheap rental space is why they all ended up in the same neighborhood. neighbors worry these pot farms will encourage crime to grow. >> drugs being sold. robberies, as a matter of fact my car was broken into less than a week ago. >> many of the marijuana applicants want spots directly across the street from thefts, robberies and assaults. >> where they are located, the crimes would become less because of the added security. >> they lead a panel that will award up to ten licenses to grow the marijuana. commissioners do get some say as
