penn state campus where thousands of people are expected to gather for a candle light vig vigil. joe paterno's statue said they asked what i would like written about me when i'm gone. that i made penn state a better place. wednesday, it didn't look like a better place. firing paterno for not going to the police for child abuse. the assistant coach said he saw sandusky and a young boy in a shower in 2002 has been placed on the sidelines. the penn state community is focused on the young victims. these students organized the candle light vigil. >> i think they are coming together as a student body, to show support on the victims and try to make an impact.

>> saturday's game, the violence resource center will raise money and awareness. >> it will benefit the pennsylvania hero project, which is designed to educate adults about the warning signs of child sexual abuse and teach them to take action if they have suspicions. >> reporter: there are new shirts thanking coach paterno for his dedication to football and student athletes. so many fans hope to see him, came to see him coach his last home game and are disappointed. this student's shirt says joe knows football. >> community and everybody at penn state. of course i want to -- i don't think what happened is fair to him at all. >> reporter: fans are urged to wear blue to the game. >> i bought this because of the blue out. in honor of joe and the poor

kids who were allegedly victimized, it was a disappointment. we are here to rally as a university and football team. >> reporter: there will be extra security at the football game. there's talk that if penn state beats nebraska, members of the team will take a game ball from the stadium to the home of joe paterno to present it to their former coach. that's the latest from penn state, back to you in washington. >> thank you. at the heart of the scandal was a 23 page report against scan dusky. it's reached texas. according to the report, he abused a victim in the alamo bowl. san antonio police are looking into the report to see if sandusky should face charges there. in the meantime, penn state is working to clear the school's

image. the board also named rodney erickson as the new president of the university. he spoke for the first time today in his new role. this is a tragedy for many lives. it will take all of us some time to come to grips with the full magnitude of the damage that's been done. >> a candle light vigil will be at 9:30. we'll have more in the broadcast at 11:00. a security export in venezuela says there will be a large ransom demand for a nationals catcher who was kidnapped. he was abducted in the city of valencia in what was described as a sophisticated operation. fans are planning a vigil while a family friend tells us what happens. derrick ward is live with the interview you will see only on news 4. >> reporter: we are outside the

gate at nationals park. as you see behind me, lots of red and white. the team colors and the faint flicker of a candle. it marks the vigil happening here. there are vigils being held in valencia for ramos. the nats fans gather outside the stadium to show support for the missing player. he was taken from his home in a working class town at gunpoint on wednesday. >> with his family and three guys came here and took him. >> reporter: a family friend who spoke to nbc from venezuela said the family is obviously shaken. >> they are trying to stay together, pray and just wait. >> i want his family especially and wilson himself, wherever he is, if he gets to see this, we

care about him a lot here in d.c. and we want him to come home. >> reporter: she helped organize a vigil at the park. a posting on twitter. how an incident thousands of miles away touched people here as ramos has on and off the field. >> he has a great personality outside the game. i have met him at some of the events the nats do. he's hilarious. >> reporter: his good nature is well known in his hometown. it adds shock and worry to his abduction. >> he has no enemies. he was like a hero in the community. everybody admires him and loves him a lot. >> it's a great way to draw attention to kidnapping that is have been going on in latin america countries for a long time here. we never realize it here in the u.s. because it never hits home. the crime rate is atrocious. >> reporter: now police in

venezuela are making progress. they may have recovered a second vehicle used in the abduction. they are working on a witness statement or i witness statement that may give descriptions of the abductors. they are trying to fight rumors saying his body was found. they say that has not happened. the family put out a call to stop the rumors as well and turn them into prayers for a safe return. we are live at nats stadium, back to you. >> thank you, derrick. >> tributes today in d.c. and all over the country to honor our veterans at the vietnam veterans memorial. the speaker was joseph galloway. he was awarded the bronze star for rescuing american troops as a civilian in vietnam back in 1965. montgomery county is hon honoring those who serve with a permanent display. it was unveiled at veterans plaza.

it included a special recognition for those who volunteer to help local veterans. president obama honored veterans today with breakfast at the white house. ceremonies at arlington national cemetery and with practical help. he pushed employers to hire thousands of veterans coming home from war zones and entering the work force. steve handelsman has more on this. >> reporter: the current commander in chief up for re-election made a popular move when he pulled forces out of iraq and set a date for them to leave afghanistan. he mentioned that as part of today's observances. he laid the traditional wreath at arlington cemetery. he pointed out because of his policies in iraq and afghanistan, this veterans day is different than the last nine. >> my fellow americans, our troops are coming home. >> reporter: returning to a

tough job market. >> i challenged business leaders to hire veterans over the next few years. >> reporter: the president pushes tax credits for companies that hire vets. the senate okayed it in a rare bipartisan vote. mitt romney praised the plan. >> given the large unemployment among veterans, it's a good idea. >> herman cain had a video at military families. >> thank you for your sacrifice and service. >> reporter: in a new poll since the harassment charges, cain's support dropped but he remained the gop front-runner at 18%. romney 15%, tied with newt gin rich who rocketed up. >> we have had cain, perry, bachmann, why not gingrich? he'll take a run at romney. we'll see what happened. >> reporter: he noted how few

after a pentagon investigation. the problems have been fixed and families of fallen troops can rest assured the remains of loved ones are treated with honor, dignity and respect. george allen, the former senator from virginia picked up a major endorsement to reclaim his seat. a video on youtube saying allen is a leader. his indorsment could help allen in the gop primary. opponents include a tea partier and a businessman. he's hoping to win the seat held by a democrat. he beat him in 2006. he will retire after one term in office. next on news 4 at 6:00, more fall out from the scandal at penn state. how they are reacting to the child exallegations dominating

georgia tech goes down fighting. news 4 at 6:00 continues. today, the italian senate overwhelmingly approved reforms that koulds help resolve their debt crisis. the european union has been demanding reforms to prevent a crisis that could wipe out the european economy and cause another global recession. the parliament is set to pass the measures tomorrow. prime minister promised to resign after the reforms pass. in the meantime, the new coalition government continues to take place in greece. an interim cap net was sworn in today. the greek prime minister is not an economist. now that italy and greece

are making progress toward getting control of their financial troubles, investors are breathing sigh of relief. the dough closed at 12, 154. nasdaq um 54 points, s&p 500 picks up 24 points. it's been almost 12 weeks since the powerful earthquake rattled the east coast and caused damage to a treasured landmark, the washington national cathedral. we got a look at the repairs under way. it will reopen tomorrow morning in time for a special event, the consecration of a new bishop. the last flowers of summer fadeaway, work to stabilize this building continues at a rapid pace. they are busy getting ready to welcome visitors back inside for the first time since the earthquake in august. the shake-up damaged the pinnacles. parts and mortar came tumbling down outside and inside.

the collapse of a crane caused more problems. >> it missed by that much. >> through it all, a soft spoken clergywoman will assume a role here. she's been elected the first woman to serve as the bishop of the cathedral. she's been a priest in minneapolis for the past 18 years. she remembers well her first visit here when she was a seminary student. >> standing room only. it was pouring rain. inside, just the most beautiful space, the most holy atmosphere and a fantastic service. >> reporter: she knows the national cathedral is more than a place for worship. >> a house of prayer for the nation. a place to gather to explore provocative ideas to gather and debate issues of our time.

temperature of 50 degrees. a chilly afternoon with winds gusting upwards of 20, 30 and 40 miles per hour during the day. we are going to see the winds die down a bit. we are still going to see cold windchills overnight tonight. not just very cold. the coldest numbers we have seen this season. 46 degrees the current temperature now. wind gusting upwards of 21 miles per hour. the current temperature, 42 in hagerstown. 32 in frederick. 39 in culpeper. when you add in the wind, look at the windchill. 37 in culpeper. 34 in frederick. 41 in washington. 40 in cambridge and easton. it's going to be cold tonight. bundle up if you are going out on this friday night or waking up friday morning, get ready for cold stuff. doppler radar, we are not seeing rain out there. the entire weekend will be on the dry side just fairly cold.

we have the northwesterly wind. it will shift. chilly and windy tood, we saw plenty of sunshine. the wind shifts to the southwest by 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning. wind picks up to 25 miles per hour. that will help temperatures to warm to close to 60 degrees on saturday. even warmer, milder air moves in on sunday. so do a few clouds. i think it will be mild with temperatures in the low 60s for most of us on sunday. this cold air is going to be a quick mover. in and out. a few clouds this evening. windy and chilly. sunset was 4:48 or 4:58 this afternoon. temperatures continue to fall. we see the numbers tomorrow morning into the 20s in some locations. 27 to 36. i think windchills in some of the extreme suburbs like frederick county, loudoun county, maybe prince william county could be around the upper teens. 18 or 19 for windchills.

to do in light of yesterday's violence. rescue teams in turkey hope to find survivors from wednesday's earthquake. two journalists are among the missing. the journalists work for a tu turkish news agency. authorities say at least 22 people were killed in wednesday's quake, including japanese relief worker and eight construction workers assembling

temporary housing. restarting a nuclear power plant. they have been offline since the earthquake hit in august. dominion power says they spent more than $100,000 instekting the reactors. the plant did not suffer functional damage. it will take ten days for the plant to become fully operational. a school bus driver from new jersey has been arrested. they charged her with drunk-driving on the job. it happened last tuesday outside philadelphia. kids were texting and calling their parents from the bus. they said they were afraid for their lives. some of the kids got off before their bus had a -- before the bus where they were supposed to get off because they were scared. parents called the cops. they caught up with the driver as she was trying to pick up more children at an elementary school.

nebraska. he has been placed on administrative leave. he was an important witness in the sexual abuse case that engolfed the school. there's a candle light vigil tonight in support of those abused. a catcher was kidnapped in venezuela this week. wilson ramos was abducted. there have been no demands yet, but they believe he is still alive. president obama is urging american employers to hire veterans returning to civilian life in a tough job market. and use proposed tax credits. today, mitt romney thought that was a good idea. the child sex abuse scandal at penn state university has been the talk of college campuses across the country. >> the university of maryland/notre dame game this

weekend. a lot of college students are talking about what impact this scandal will have on football. darcy spencer has the report. >> reporter: at fedex field, the gridiron is ready. notre dame taking on the university of maryland. how excited are you for the game? >> we are thrilled. >> reporter: it's the first game since the firing of joe paterno. maryland students are weighing in. >> it will make head coaches be more responsible for what their staff are doing. >> i feel like a lot of players aren't going to want to go there. if they don't want to go the penn state, maybe they will come to maryland. >> we caught up with this grad who agreed paterno had to go but says it could have been handled better. do you think it will hurt recruitment? >> i hope it doesn't. it may. i hope people realize it's still a great school and one event doesn't change the legacy. >> reporter: at the marriott

park, notre dame alumni were getting geared up for the big game. they are talking ability the impact of penn state losing the famous coach mid season. >> feel so badly for joe and his group. penn state always had a fantastic program. the right thing has been done. >> reporter: some maryland students are hoping penn state doesn't crack down on students who rioted the night paterno got canned. >> college students rioting and going crazy, taking things out of hand. so, i don't know why they would expect any less. >> reporter: that kick off here at fedex field is 7:30 saturday evening. it airs live on nbc. at fedex field, darcy spencer, news 4. in oakland, california, the mayor is calling on occupy protesters to pack up and leave voluntarily tonight. it comes after a man was shot and killed.

police say the shooting was not connected to the camp, but authorities say the plaza is no longer safe. the mayor has not said what would happen if they don't leave on their own. last month, police used tear gas when they forced them to leave the area. d.c. police to get tougher on unruly demonstrations after the violence last weekend. a top city official says he sees few public safety problems with the occupy protesters. tom sherwood has the report. >> reporter: the confrontation at the convention center disrupted traffic, resulted in injuries and brought complaints police weren't patrolling the streets. they issued tougher enforcement. not everyone agrees the protests are getting more violent. >> do you think they are unsafe

now? >> no. no, i don't. what i have seen around freedom plaza has not struck me as dangerous or a public safety threat. >> reporter: on the politics hour on wamu 885 radio, judiciary said he thought it was an exception. >> something happened at the convention center last friday night. there were a lot of protesters. there was friction between protesters and traffic. what happened on friday night clearly was a public safety issue. but, in terms of the protests in general, what i have seen has been peaceful and it's expressing an opinion which is on american right. >> one protester said on the politics hour that the protesters are trying to be non-violent. >> it was in the beginning.

we were respectful and listened to everything they were saying. we had no problems at all. we are escalating, but peacefully. our tactic has been a non-violent movement. >> reporter: protester camps were mostly quiet this friday as protesters hunker down against the cold and biting wind. tom sherwood, news 4, washington. >> there were very few police officers stationed near the downtown camp sights today and little traffic destruction to worry about because of the veterans day holiday. a new effort was announced that would pay tribute to prisoners of war. high school students asked the school board to fly p.o.w. and m.i.a. flags at school and administrative buildings. many think it's important for school kids to get involved. >> the children are picking it

up in the schools today. it's going to be a wonderful opportunity. >> bob smith is with american leenlg on post 124. they made their pitch for the flags last week. no word on when a decision might be made. funding is on track for the second phase of the dulles rail. it extends from falls church through tyson's corner. there's been in agreement on who will pay for the final stretch of the project to extend it to the airport in dulles county. that is until now. ray lahood says the department of transportation will offer federal loan assistance to fairfax and loudoun counties as well as to the airport's authority. virginia will also contribute, the state, that is, $150 million. have you checked the calendar? today is 11/11/11. people across the region are pressing their luck and

opting out and shopping online. >> the pace of retail changed because of e commerce and the internet. >> 44% of consumers expecting to shop on black friday, down from 47% last year. the survey by consumer reports found only 24% planning to shop that day. some online retailers have launched sales under the banner of black november. >> these are relatively antiquated shopping moments. >> reporter: many retailers like walmart are catering to both with black friday prices available online and still planning big discounts on the day. some stores are latching on to the idea of the always open internet. >> a lot of retailers are opening their doors at midnight so people don't have to go to sleep and wake up early.

uncles and aunts that lent me her car. when i told her what happened she said are you hurt? is anybody else? and then how are you going to pay for it. the fact she didn't go above my head is no surprise. she's never followed the crowd. for 100 years she's been doing things her way. at 42 years old, at a time most people were resigning themselves, she decided to go to college. she did. got her degree and taught school for the next 20 years. for the last ten or more years when ever i would go visit her, i had to call ahead to make sure she would be at home and not at a casino. she did more traveling at 90 than most people i know at 40. she has two artificial knees, two artificial hips and will outwalk you any day of the week and outtalk you every day of the week. she loves potics. hates fox news.
