those conversations were recorded just as fbi agents arrived at their home to serve a search warrant. darcy spencer has the report. >> this is a copy of the recordings. they were released today. you can hear the desperate moments before the johnson's home is raided. a sitting county executive and a councilmember conspireing to destroy a bribe check and hide hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. in a conversation between jack johnson and his wife, they talk about destroying a bribe check. >> flush that. >> reporter: this happened as federal investigators pounded at the door of their mitchellville home as they closed in on the johnsons and their probe of county corruption. they seemed to know there was trouble at the door. jack johnson instructs his wife to get the bribe check out of

his dresser drawer. >> there's a box with a check in it. tear it up or chew it up. >> reporter: she found the check and that led to destruction of evidence in their federal corruption investigation. as that check is flushed down the toilet. in other recorded conversations, jack johnson is heard seeking political contributions in a pay to play scheme with developers. >> i need you to raise $6,000 for my wife. >> reporter: back at the home, there was conversation about all the cash in the house. >> what do you want me to do with this money? they are banging. what do you want me to do? >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> reporter: you can hear her stuffing the cash. prosecutors say they found nearly $80,000 in her underware. this conversation, a little more than a year ago, she was the first lady of prince george's county and just elected to serve

on the county council. she finally answered the door. oh my god. what is going on? >> reporter: jack johnson is still on the other line. his wife begins to cry as they enter their home. >> scare me. >> we are here with a search warrant. >> reporter: federal prosecutors say in the court documents she knew about her husband's corruption and say she was on the council for personal gain. she faces 12 to 18 months in prison. back to you. >> darcy spencer reporting. thank you. new details are coming to light in the arrest of a local restaurant owner on drug charges. a 36-year-old was arrested two weeks ago after federal agents tracked cocaine from texas to her office in ft. washington.

she's the owner of the union town grill. 140 pounds of cocaine was involved the $1.5 million in cash. "the washington post" reports she was not in custody, but forced to surrender her passport. a former assistant coach at penn state university. his name, jerry sandusky. he's charged with sexually abusing at least eight boy that is were part of a charity he founded. today, they began an internal investigation into allegations they now of the abuse and never reported it. a long time leader of the group resigned. one of the victims is going to file a lawsuit against penn state. michelle franzen reports. >> reporter: as the investigation into child sex abuse moves forward at penn state there's more fallout surrounding the former football coach.

the judge who set bail for jerry sandusky was a volunteer and donated money to the second mile, the charity sandusky founded and used to meet the alleged victims. over the weekend, the long-term president and ceo of the charity resigned. >> he thought it was in the best interest of the organization to move forward. >> reporter: he's the latest person caught up in the investigation. joe paterno who led the lions was fired along with athletic director tim curley and the vice president gary schultz. the big ten reacting announcing they are removing paterno's name from the championship trophy. penn state's last home game went on without paterno over the weekend. today, students return to classes hoping the university can rebuild their image. >> there's been 156 years before this and i hope for that after

it. >> reporter: they are due in court to face charges of lying to the grand jury and covering up reports of the abuse. college leaders are tasked with investigating why the alleged crimes were never reported to police. at the same time, defending the university against possible civil suits. paterno has hired a lawyer in the face of accusations he didn't do enough to address the suspected abuse. his image and reputation like the universities now on the line as this case unfolds. in state college, pennsylvania, michelle franzen, nbc news. a report says the second mile charity learned about the abuse allegations almost ten years ago. officials at penn state, officials at the charity did not inform the police. some big names in prosports are distancing themgss from second mile charity.

hundreds of cops in riot gear cleared out a group of occupy oakland protesters today. it was a week after a man was shot and killed. the raid happened about 4:30 this morning. police pilled the raid outside city hall after issuing several warnings over the weekend. there was not much resistance but police did arrest 32 people.

some protesters promised they would return. there were no injuries today. police believe last week's shooting stemmed between two groups of men fighting near the camp. several protesters in denver, colorado clashed. it happened sunday at demonstrators refused to remove a table set up in the park. two officers were injured when scuffles broke out. one twisted his knee, another hit his head. two people arrested and charged with assaulting an officer. investors are cheering the arrival of a new prime minister. he will not be rushed into quick decisions to fix the debt crisis. for now, it's enough for most he is not berlusconi. >> reporter: berlusconi was once untouchable. a self-made man, a man from

evening. shomari stone is in the area. >> reporter: the police chief is out here talking to residents trying to determine what happened out here. two people have been shot. one adult male, he's died. the other person is around the corner. he's in stable condition. police are gathering evidence trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. they are trying to determine a motive. let's role video to show the emotion in the neighborhood now. there was a man who heard about the shooting. he ran past the police tape, the yellow police crime scene tape. he heard his friend was possibly one of the victims. he broke down. police had to take him into custody to calm him down because he could contaminate the crime scene here. once they put him in the car, they talked to him, he calmed down. they released him. he is not a suspect in this shooting. they say people cannot pass the

more car trouble for d.c. council chair member kwame brown. >> he's driving without license plates on the front or back of the vehicle. >> the car was parked on the street and were told police could tow it. he was attending a school press conference about remodelling the cardoza school. they pointed out the chairman's new prius shown here parked a short time later outside the

john wilson building has no visible license plate, a violation of the law. he said rainwater destroyed the temporary tag on the back and he hadn't gotten a new one. police officers said the car could be issued tickets or towed from the city street because it lacked proper visual licensing. he sometimes puts a tag in his windshield was also not visible. the chairman, earlier this year came under a storm of criticism to release two separate fully loaded suvs. he complainted about the first one's color. he promised to pay the city cost. it's not said whether he paid anything or not. we talked to the chairman's office. they said the chairman asked for a replacement tag. one person was saying these

temporary tags are impervious. this one was shredded. i don't know what happened. >> maybe we'll find out in a day or two. thank you, tom. an ex-marine accused of firing shots at the pentagon in quantico pleaded guilty to unrelated charges. he's been sentenced to six months in jail and faces federal charges for a series of overnight shootings in virginia that case has been on hold. because of time served, federal marshalls will be able to pick him up in the coming weeks to answer the federal charges. police issued an arrest warrant for a man accused of firing shots near the white house. it happened friday night. investigators believe the man is still in the area.

we have the report. >> reporter: u.s. park police believe oscar ortega acted alone in friday night's shooting near the white house. at one point, investigators believed he may have exchanged gunfire with another party. the motive behind the weapons discharge is now unclear. >> we haven't received reports from anybody or any sources of anything struck by gunfire. at this point, we are not certain what his intentions were. >> reporter: witnesses reported hearing shots from a rifle in the 1600 block of constitution avenue near the white house in washington monument. police chased ortega. he crashed his car near the roosevelt bridge and escaped on foot. investigators impounded his car and collected a lot of evidence, including his id. >> he may have arrived to the washington, d.c. area in the last several weeks. right now, we need to hear from

welcome back, everybody. i'm meteorologist doug kammerer here in storm cter 4 watching a very warm day outside. the high temperature, 73 degrees. currently sitting at 66 degrees. still with a south-southwest wind at 11 miles per hour gusting at 21. still on the breezy side. the breeze is helping keep them warm. it's producing a tremendous amount of thunderstorms. some of them very strong, if not severe. we have had a report around the champaign area of a tornado that popped down. it's going to be interesting to see how it will affect us in the

they predict the number of deaths from diabetes will double by 2030. catcher for the nationals baseball team, wilson ramos will be back on the baseball diamond a few days after he was rescued from kidnappers. ramos is 24 years old. he said he feared for his life when they took him at gunpoint last week. he was on the porch of his family's home in venezuela at the time. after a two-day search he was freed following shoot out between the police and kidnappers. ramos will play for a venezuelan team beginning wednesday. >> ali is paying tribute to smoking joe frazier. he joined friends and family for a funeral service in philadelphia today. mike tyson and don king were also there. frazier died at a brief battle with liver cancer. he was the first man to beat ali

most of the o school principals in fairfax county say they need surveillance cameras in their schools. there were a series of school food fights last spring. now, they are getting a lot of support from parents. not everybody likes the idea. julie carey reports. >> privacy means something. it should mean something. >> reporter: that's stu gibson talking about allowing fairfax county high schools to put surveillance cameras in high traffic areas. they have been outside high schools for years. principals are asking to install them inside after a series of food fights left cafeterias in chaos and students injured.
