>> good morning. welcome to "news4 midday." i'm barbara harrison. it's tuesday, november 15, 2011. we begin with breaking news out of loudoun county this morning, where a teacher is being accused of being drunk at school. the teacher was accused of being drunk yesterday afternoon. the 46-year-old is charged with being drunk in public. he is a physics teacher at the school. we'll have more on this breaking story for you coming up at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 this evening. >> a new report out this morning says more potential victims claim a former penn state football defensive coordinator sexually abused them. according to the new york times as many as 10 have come forward. now sandusky breaks his silence.

angie is live with more on the former coach and what he has to say. >> good morning, barb raxt in an exclusive phone interview with bob costas for rock center, the former penn state coach charged in plo lesting several boys says he is innocent but has regrets. >> could say that you know, i have done some of those things, i have horsed around with kids. i have showered after workouts. i have hugged them and i have touched their leg, without intent of sexual contact. >> are you a pedophile? >> no. >> are you sexually attracted to young boys, to underaged boys? >> am i sexually attracted to underage boys? sexually attracts, you know, i enjoy young people. i love to be around them. i -- but no, i'm not sexually attracted to young boys.

>> sandusky is facing a 40-count indictment of sexually abusing eight boys over 15 years. one of the well known was that by coach mick mike query who is now on administrative leave testified he saw sandusky raping a child in the somehow e sandusky denies it. >> what did happen in the shower the night that mike mcqueary happened upon you and the young boy? >> okay, we were showering and horsing around, and he actually turned all of the showers on and was actually sliding across the floor and -- and we were, as i recall, possibly like snapping a towel in horseplay. >> sandusky went on to deny that head coach joe paterno who was fired in the wake of this ever spoke to him about the allegation. >> did you know that jerry sandusky was going to speak out? >> this morning sandusky's lawyer spoke out saying his

client is innocent but didn't use a lot of common sense. >> you showering with kids doesn't make him guilty. that's the point. the point is he has maintained his innocence and we live in a system that presumes innocence, yet the public and the media, not everybody but for the most part have tried and convicted him and he hasn't had a day in court yet. >> the lawyer also says they believe they have found the suspected victim in the mcqueary's eyewitness account and the man now in his 20s says it never happened. barbara. >> thank you, angie. sandusky's charity may not survive. the organization's ceo resigned yesterday, second mile's board of directors say there will be several discussions about the charity's future over the next few weeks. and new today, loudoun county deputies are investigating a serious crash involving two cars happening during the morning

rush on route 7. meg megan joins us with more. >> it happened as rush hour was getting under way. there was a car coming off westbound route 7, behind the wheel an 18-year-old, that hyundai sonata was on the ramp, instead of curving around following the ramp what police say happened it just kept going straight. went through the large triangular grassy area there, went airborne, actually traveled across those lanes of the loudoun county parkway, ended up on this side of the parkway, and right there where you see that orange mark there on the roadway, that's where it struck another vehicle, a toyota corolla in the far right lane. you can see the skid marks here in the tire tracks. they didn't stop there. the two cars then began to continue across this large grassy median where i should say has a really large dip in the middle. they went down here, didn't slow

down enough, up the other side and then finally came to rest on this other exit ramp here. take a look at this video we shot when both vehicles were on the scene. it will give you the idea of the violence. a tremendous amount of damage to both of the vehicles. now, in that toyota that was struck was a 47-year-old woman. we're told by investigators she has serious injuries. however, she is expected to live. the 18-year-old who was behind the wheel of the other vehicle, he was also injured but again, he is expected to live as well. police say or investigators say that they have not ruled out the possibility that drugs or alcohol were involved in this crash. they are still waiting for toxicology. and they say that charges in this collision are still pending. no word on who these folks are, no names have been released. not as of yet. back to you. >> thank you, megan for that report. we're going to check on road conditions now.

meets wisconsin avenue. you can see the washington monument in the middle. there is the potomac river, on the horizon we're looking into prince george's county, to the right we're looking to falls church and autumn color. look at the gray sky all over, looking into southern loudoun county, off in the far distance there. throughout the rest of the day coming in from the west we had a few sprinkles where the patches of green are, to the west of fredericksberg and the highlands of west virginia. and temperatures are in the low and mid-60s in washington and the nearby suburbs, upper 60s, southern maryland around the lower part of the eastern

negotiators agreed on a $182 billion plan to keep the government running at least through mid december. it includes proposed cuts to nasa and community development programs, congress faces a deadline of midnight friday to vote on the bill. the house is expected to vote thursday with the senate to follow. >> well, as part of that spending plan congress is scaling back on the obama administration's proposal for healthier school lunches. the bill drops attempts to limit servings of potatoes and to boost whole grains. the changes were requested by food companies and backed by congressional conservatives. >> a labor dispute could force the aviation administration to shut down. senator rockefeller is chairman of the committee. he said an unnamed airline and labor union don't agree on a

provision that would make it more difficult for airline workers to unionize. according to the senator that is holding up a long term funding bill for the faa. >> arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is showing great progress but still struggles to put words together. she won't return to congress until she's better. she and her husband mark kelly are out with a new joint memoir called "gabby a story of courage and hope." she talked with abc news about the shooting that left six dead and 13 others wounded. >> sad. oh, sad. a lot of people died. yes. yes. >> she struggled to form her words. her husband sometimes completed her thoughts. there has been widespread speculation about gifford's

career. >> let's turn our attention to the weather. we had a great start out there if you like it on the warm side. a little more like late september than november. >> it looks like autumn, but it doesn't feel like it. that's for sure. we've had this mild pattern the last couple of days. it does continue this morning. good morning. there is a live picture from our city camera. still some gorgeous autumn color there along the potomac river. but away from the waters and the warmer waters of the bay and inland a lot of the leaves have come down. at reagan national it's at 66 under a cloudy sky. it is rather humid. we've got a light breeze out of the northwest. we had a weak front come through and pretty much dissipating now. it did come through, a few sprinkles this morning. there are some showers, this area of yellow and green here in western pennsylvania down into southern ohio and kentucky is a moderate rain area. closer to washington t last 12 hours a few sprinkles coming through.

we have right now to the west of fredericksburg a few sprinkles. just a cloudy sky over our region and temperatures certainly are mild. right now at reagan national 66, in the mid to upper 60s prince george's county, much of southern maryland, around the bay. fredericksburg, 70, probably the high for the day. west and north a few sprinkles it's about 60 degrees. forward over the next 48 hours these areas of green, these are some zones of potential rain might get passing showers later and overnight tonight. then curring the day on wednesday, a greater chance of moderate, maybe briefly heavy downpours south and east of us tomorrow. then clearing out on thursday morning. might have the a lingering shower south and east. then we'll get the sun back and some colder weather with a blustery wind on showers big changes on the way. for the rest of this afternoon, cloudy, a chance of a few showers, we'll hold into the 60s to near 70. winds around 5 to 10, up to a15.

overnight tonight, cloudy, may be a few passing showers and we'll fall from the low 60s early evening down to the upper 50s by midnight. by dawn it will be down to the low 50s and a cooler day tomorrow with showers, especially during the afternoon, highs low 60s. perhaps a lingering shower south and east wednesday night early thursday morning, then sun thursday afternoon, a gusty northwest wind, highs only near 50. and then the temperature will plummet down into the 20s on friday morning. afternoon highs with the sunshine, only the upper 40s on friday. into the weekend, still chilly but not as cold as friday. it will be cold saturday morning. in the mid-50s during the afternoon, near 60 on sunday. monday temperatures up around 60. now as we look forward to the future, we'll have our storm team winter forecast. watch that, we'll let you know what our thoughts are about the coming winter and what might

include sweet potatoes in thanksgiving meal while 69% say they have mashed potatoes. you see i'm going to have both. we have employer on our area thanksgiving likes and desire likes and a great sweet potato recipe as well. good morning. welcome. >> thank you. >> i was saying to you that every time i google a recipe it takes me to all recipes.com so you guys have got them all. >> yes. a little bit of everything there. >> sweet potatoes big in washington. >> yes. very big. and different from the rest of the country. most of the country mashed potatoes is the big side dish. here it's sweet potatoes. >> i usually have them. several different ways, even sweet potato pie. let's talk about this recipe. i want to give the ingredients. this is what it's called. one can of sweet potato, a cup of sugar, two egg, a third cup of butter, a cup of packed brown sugar.

a cup of chopped pecans and a third cup of butter melted. >> i started last night by mashing the sweet potatoes. preheat to 350 degrees. then you drain sorry, you'll open your can of sweet potatoes. yes. once you boil them, you drain them and they go in the bowl. >> you can use canned sweet potatoes or the real. >> right. >> you cook them first if you are going to use them. >> they took the same way. the only difference is if you use the whole sweet potatoes, peel them, core them before you put them in boiling salt water. once you have your sweet potatoes drained they go in the bowl. you can add all of your ingredients at one time, actually. so we're going to put in the butter, and mix that in. and the milk. >> third cup of each of those.

>> a third cup of each. and two eggs. get a little mix in there. >> and add our cup of sugar. >> that's a lot of sugar. >> it is. >> is there a dessert? >> it smells like a dessert. i'll tell you. my house smells like cinnamon rolls last night. then we're going to add a teaspoon of vanilla as well. that goes in. and once you get this all mixed in. >> some foreign guests at my table have commented on the fact that we really do like sweets with our thanksgiving dinner. we have a lot of sweet things on there for the meal. this looks terrific. you're going to put more sugar in? >> yes. more in the topping. once we have this mixed we're going to pour this into our prepared dish. >> you mix it well.

>> yes. >> what comes next? >> next we're going to take the topping. we're going to do a cup of brown sugar and a cup of chopped pecans. a third cup of flour. and then we're going to drizzle in a third cup of butter. >> that looks wonderful. >> not a low-cal dessert. >> mix this up and that goes on top. and you spoon that onto the top. >> that looks pretty easy. >> it's really easy. >> and then let's have a look at the finished product. >> okay. >> wow. how long do you have to cook it? >> you cook it for 35 minutes or until you insert a knife in the center and it comes out clean. >> it looks so yummy. how long? >> 35 minutes. >> and it comes out ready to go.

>> right now, former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky is speaking out since the scandal broke. he spoke with bob costas on rock center last night. he says he never assaulted young boys but admits to showering and horsing around with them. he is accused of sexually

abusing at least eight boys over 15 years. and occupy wall street protesters are still waiting to be back in the park, their home for nearly two months. the police raided the park to clean and inspect it. a court order being considered right now may allow tents and sleeping bags to remain in the park. >> right now president obama is on his way to australia, while there the president is expected to announce plans to expand the u.s./australia military relationship. the president canceled two planned visits last year because of domestic priorities, he won't arrive in the country until mid afternoon local time tomorrow. >> before heading down under the president spent his final day in hawaii golfing with a friend who was arrested earlier this year teeing off with bobby bitcomb arrested for soliciting a prostitute. this was the first time the two played together since the

arrest. >> four months after the casey anthony murder trial a lead prosecutor in the case is out with a new book revealing -- very revealing book we understand, a jury acquitted the 25-year-old of killing her daughter caylee. jeff ashton retired after the trial. his new book is called "imperfect justice, prosecuting casey anthony." he writes toward the end of the trial anthony's attorneys tried to get her to take a plea deal. also said the jury was pampered and never seriously considered the case. despite a lack of hard evidence ashton feels the team presented a strong case. >> we couldn't provide the jury with sort of clear evidence on a silver platter, of exactly how caylee died. but we felt we had done was to have excluded everything but homicide. and really, you know, the burden of proof on the state isn't

necessarily to prove exactly how the homicide was committed but that it was committed. >> ashton also said in the book he general winly did not like anthony's lawyer jose baez, he said the defense attorney was careless with facts, ignored deadlines and encouraged anthony to be uncooperative with detectives. casey anthony is keeping a low profile in florida while serving probation on an unrelated check fraud conviction. >> and we're hearing the private conversations now between former prince george's county executive jack johnson and his wife just before they were arrested in a corruption case. the conversations were recorded as fbi agents arrived at their home to serve a search warrant. >> if you open up the dresser, you know, my drawer, right. there's a little box and in the box there's a check. just tear it up or chew it up. something. >> that is the beginning of a phone call between former prince george's county executive jack

johnson and his wife leslie as fbi agents knocked on the front door of their home. that check according to the feds was $100,000 bribe. leslie johnson can be heard scrambling through her husband's drawers for several minutes searching. >> i don't see any check, jack, and they are banging and banging. >> okay, let them bang. they can't open the door. >> in and out the call loud knocking from agents with a search warrant to serve. as the phone conversation continues, it's apparent jack johnson knows who is there. he struggled to remember where the hidden check was but his wife finds it. >> they say they are the fbi, jack. >> that's why i'm telling you. >> you want me to put it down the toy threat. >> yes. >> to flush it? >> yeah, flush that. >> but the desperate call didn't end there. there's cash all over the house. $80,000 of it found in leslie

johnson's a bra, a result of this exchange. >> what do you want me to do with this money. they are banging. >> put it -- put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> about two minutes later agents forced their way in. >> you scared me. >> we're the fbi. we're here to serve a search warrant. >> the local doctor is also charged in the corruption case. leslie johnson pleaded guilty conspiracy charges. federal prosecutors are using the recorded calls in asking a judge to sentence her close to the maximum of 18 months. her sentencing is set for december 9th. >> and right now, the prince george's county council is considering a bill to ban slot machines. maryland law allows slot machines in five locations

outside the county. some lawmakers want to expand the law and bring slots to a raceway in fort washington. those against arguing that gambling would cause a prize in crime an traffic. northern virginia yet to release the name of the matter to shot and killed himself. deputy sas the man was in his minivan waiting on his family at the giant store. his gun went off when he reached to unbuckle his seat belt. three children were in the minivan when it happened. cordozo high school will undergo a major makeover. the d.c. public schools will close that still for a $100 million renovation. the school will get a high tech up grade and regulation size gym. the 600 students will attend at the old meyer elementary school. all of the work should be done in time for the part of next

schoolier. >> the fairfax county school board will decide whether a security cameras will be put inside the schools there. cameras have been outside for years but some are pushing to get them placed indoors as well. they started floating the idea after a rsh of food fights broke out last spring. they want them in common areas like hauls and after tearias, but others say the cameras will spend the wrong message. today a gay rights pioneer will be honored. members of congress and the obama administration will hold a memorial service for frank kemeny. the 86-year-old died last month. he spent most of his lifetime fighting for gay and lesbian equality after the federal government fired him for being bay. today marks the 50th

>> you may soon see your gas bill going up but it could have been a lot worse. the maryland public service commission rejected an application by washington gas to substantially raise their rates. washington gas wanted to boost revenue by 30 million to replace some of the utility's piping and infrastructure. the commission says it will only allow a hike of about 1 l$1.27 the average bill. americans spent more an autos, electronics and building supplies in october. we'll check in with brian shactman who joins us live with more on that and the rest of the business headlines. >> good morning. major stock indices to the down side. one of the major drags is walmart, it reported its earnings, just huge numbers in terms of revenue but profits down because they lowered prices and that squeezed the margins.

same store sales were better but the stock trading down dragging down the dow. the data points, not bad when it comes to the u.s. economy. retail sales were strong, cars, building materials leading. empire manufacturing was one of the regional manufacturing surveys, positive for the first time in months so that's a good thing. and producer prices were down for the first time since last june down .3%. so inflation fears easing but not enough to turn the market into positive territory though we do have 4-plus hours left of trade. have a good day. >> we hope those hours bring good news. thanks, brian. >> skin changes are among the most visible signs of aging. evidence of increasing age including wrinkles and sagging skin. but it also causes changes to your hair and nails. how to slow those changes down. and what to do once they have come. good morning. >> good morning. >> this sounds like something we

all need to hear. let's talk about some of the ways you can avoid the signs of aging. >> well, the first thing is anti-oxidants and sun screen. we need to start using those types of products and taking those types of supplements early on. it's never too early. teenage years, 20s, what have you. because as we get older we see that we need these more, our diets may not be as plentiful with the antioxidants. >> what should we have in terms of supplements? >> well, this is an anti-oxidant and you can get -- this is a company i use, it's called pure encapsulelation. and i think this is one of the best -- >> that's an antioxidant. >> you are shopping, you look for -- >> that's antioxidant. exactly. >> what smells. >> then like i said, sun screen. this is an excellent product by eucerin. you put a lotion on every day,

might as well put the sun screen on. >> any sun screen you can put on is going to help. >> this is an spf of 15. i prefer the 15 because we do need our vitamin d., so this has enough -- >> i'm battling the 50. >> i think the 30 is adequate and for darker skin types, 15 is perfectly fine. >> let's talk about some of the other specific changes you see to the skin, hair and nails. >> dryness. everyone complains. it has to do a lot with the hormonal changes particularly in women, as we age our skin isn't as hydrated as well. so we need to be more diligent with loopbury kating the skin. these are lotions that are great, particularly aveno for sensitive skin. you'll hear people talk about their skin is sensitive, it bruises easily.

it's very dry. >> lubricating will make a difference. >> a big difference. one of the key symptoms i think a lot of people have is itching. and in the wintertime we put on wool, sweaters and they are constantly itching. this is a very, very nice gentle oatmeal-based lotion that's excellent for lubrication. >> do you have to worry about skin break-outs? >> generally not. as we get older we get drier. so this one in fact is a little bit oilier. more like an ointment. >> so once you get to the place where this is happened, your nails dried out. your skin has, the wrinkles have come, is there reversal? >> yes, we can. we can change the skin, again, there are products that are out on the market that reverse the changes that the sun causes.

and it damages our dna, so these products, this is one that is in my office, and it's really not a name brand. a lot of companies make it. it's dna repair. >> would that include retin snarks. >> it does repair the skin but not specifically dna. it depends what you're looking at. i would say go to a board certified dermatologist and state what is going on. you may have wrinkles and not been in the sun allot. the wrinkles are very prominent for you so we would possibly use different products for different situations. >> tell us what to do about thinning hair and nails. >> thinning hair, rogaine helps, madd maknoxadill. and nails, buffing the nails and putting on doobry can'ts, very
