brian mooar joins us live outside the white house. >> reporter: first we saw the evidence collection teams outside the white house measuring, looking for possible other bullet hits on this historic presidential mansion. we find out the suspect has been placed under arrest by authorities in pennsylvania. authorities were searching for oscar ortega a few blocks away and found him at a hotel 200 miles away. extraordinary video from the white house. 1600 pennsylvania avenue being processed as a crime scene. a day after the secret service discovered the presidential mansion had been hit by at least two bullets. one slug stopped by bullet proof glass. technicians focused on the truman balcony outside the president's residence.

as the white house search was under way, police captured their suspect. a 21-year-old drifter from iowa he was staying in a hotel in western pennsylvania. the shooting happened friday evening when president obama was traveling in california. moments later, they found his wrecked vehicle. inside, investigators discovered an ak-47 assault rifle and several spent rounds. after releasing the photo, they received tips he was living in the occupy d.c. camp three blocks from the white house. >> police came here. they had a picture of the gentleman, they searched a couple tents. we told him he wasn't affiliated with occupy d.c. >> reporter: they have reason to believe ortega posed a threat to president obama. at this hour, authorities are

holding news conference to update us on how the arrest went down. now, he's facing only the d.c. gun charges. that will be good enough to bring him back here to the district for extradition. authorities say additional charges are essentially inevitable. >> as far as we know, was he acting alone and was he caught alone, today? >> reporter: he was caught alone. as far as acting alone, authorities will not say that. they believe he fired the gun out of the passenger side of his vehicle as he was going, i believe west -- east to west -- east to west, yes, on constitution avenue. he was firing out the passenger side of the vehicle. it's what they believe. they want to talk to him. it's murky. there's evidence, a suggestion he may have mental problems. he has a history of other

at rain at 11:00 p.m. even tomorrow. that rain hangs on. a chance that we could be looking at snow flakes, guys, for tomorrow. we'll look at that in detail in a couple minutes. >> thanks, veronica. the latest on the child sex abuse scandal that's been rocking penn state. today, we are hearing from the assistant coach, who is a key witness in the case against sandusky. >> he's charged with sexually abusing eight boys over a ten year period. jay gray has the latest. >> reporter: more fallout. mike mcquery told friends he not only reported that incident to joe paterno, but they also went to authorities. in an e-mail obtained by the associated press, he said i did stop it. not physically, but made sure it was stopped when i left the locker room.

australia on the second stop of a nine-day tour of the asia pacific region. at a dinner he tried his hand at australian slang. he started by thanking them for a productive discussion. he called it a real chin wag. >> when we meet, we listen to each other, we learn from each other. it's not just a lot of ear bashing. that's a good one, ear bashing. i can use that in washington. >> on the serious side, at a news conference, the president announced the u.s. will establish a military presence in australia. 250 marines will arrive there next year eventually building to 2500. the president said the deployment will help maintain the security, architecture in the region. china immediately expressed reservations about the plan.

well, it really turned on today. the rain that is. it rained all night and rained all day. >> right. >> it's like soup out there. >> said it was going to be a nasty morning rush. boy was it ever. hopefully you left for your destination early to get there on time. we are getting a bit of a break. part of the evening rush is going to be wet, again. we have overcast skies. showers falling throughout the area. some of the heavier stuff is going to be moving in in an hour. the temperature, currently 59 degrees. it is nasty out there. it's wet. it's chilly with a temperature of 57 degrees. a little milder and warmer to the south. it's very foggy throughout the area. i have seen visibility drop big time in the last two hours.

55 north in frederick, maryland. 57 in martinsburg. big range from north to south. you can see the scattered showers here. heavier rain to the west right there in the center of west virginia. some big-time rain and storms in western south carolina, down through georgia as well as the pan hanhandle of florida. tornado possibly around the macon, georgia area. the moisture is streaming northward. moisture over the area. the winds started to settle a bit. the visibility dropping. we are down to under two miles in frederick. gaithersburg under two miles in baltimore, maryland. foggy across the area. it's not likely we'll have fog around the area. showers here coming our way for late evening, around 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. the temperature 57 degrees.

oscar ortega was found at a hotel in pennsylvania. two bullets were found on the white house grounds. one of the rounds was lodged in glass behind a historic window. a penn state assistant coach who is a key witness in the child sex abuse scandal. he witnessed jerry sandusky assaulting a young boy in a shower on campus, but never reported it. in an e-mail sent to a former classmate, she says he stopped the sexual assault and did tell police. police have not commented on the e-mail. stocks closed down sharply. the close comes after a report by fitch ratings saying u.s. banks could take a hit if europe's debt crisis continues to spread. the dow fell 190 points. nasdaq off 46 and s&p 500 ended

anniversary of the movement. police in washington state are examining information from a sugar daddy dating website. they are hoping it will lead to new clues in the search for a 2-year-old boy missing for ten days now. authorities discovered the boy's mother, julia or someone using her name and likeness created a profile on it. she's a sugar baby looking for a wealthy, real man who can pay her $3,000 to $5,000 a month. police contacted him last week. >> they wanted all the records of her log in and activity on the website as well as whom she might have spoken to through the website. >> she told police she left her son, sky, alone in a car alongside the road after it ran out of gas. she claimed she walked to a gas

station. when she returned, sky was gone. however, police tested and drove the car and they found no problems with it. a mother in delaware is facing charges today after her 9-year-old son was spotted driving himself to school. she allowed her son to get behind the wheel alone yesterday. a witness saw the child alone outside an elementary school parking lot. she's charged with endangering the welfare of a child. she was released on a $1,000 bond. anna kournikova is leaving prime time tv. >> she announced today she won't be returning as host and trainer of nbcs "the biggest loser." she helped them shed pounds for one season. her reason for leaving the show is unknown. despite her departure, she's always been a part of the
