good morning, everybody. welcome to "news4 midday." i am barbara harrison. new audiotapes have surfaced that are disturbing. we have more on the investigation including what was said on the tape. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. shortly before the shooting, the suspect, oscar, ortega hernandez, he made an unusual tape and he was trying to be part of one of oprah winfrey's shows. investigators have the tape and are going over it and believe it sheds light on the motive. >> it's not a coincidence that i look like jesus.

attempting to assassinating barack obama. in court documents, a witness says he wanted to, quote, hurt president obama and referred to him as an antichrist and wanted to kill him. last friday night witnesses said to have seen shots fired at the white house, and on tuesday the police realized the white house had been struck. initially it was believe only two bullets made impact but now as many nine bullets reached the white house grounds. >> reporter: none of those made its way inside the white house. nobody was injured. and those that know him, they

say he believes the government was after him and he left his home state in idaho a month ago and made his way here to washington. the man accused of killing his 91-year-old wife in their georgetown home wants to represent himself. he is charged with the death of his wife. a judge is expected to make a decision on his request today. police originally thought she died of natural causes but found she was strangled and beaten to death. and then attorneys for george huguely are in court. he is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, virginia lacrosse player, yeardley love. attorneys are worried jurors may

have seen too much about the case and may have already performed an opinion. metro work over the weekend can keep you from where you are going to get there on time. metro is providing an express shuttle from metro center to reagan national airport to help catch flights. and on the blue line between stadium-armory and addison road, and on the orange line, between boston and east falls church. turning to the weather, and a very cold start to this day out there. a cold weekend, tom, coming up? >> certainly part of it. we started off this morning, subfreezing throughout most of the region. under a clear sky with a calm wind with bright sun we have warmed up, thankfully, from the very cold low earlier this morning. right now, it's all clear throughout our region.

we have a big area of high pressure, holding forth along the atlantic seaboard and will be over us throughout the day today and into tonight. right now the temperatures are right around 40 degrees. reagan national is now at 43, and it's near 40 at montgomery county, and aur lidge ton and fairfax counties, and parts of central virginia and the shenandoah valley this morning bottomed out in the mid-20s, and now it's in the upper 30s there. southern maryland around the bay in the low 40s. sunshine for the rest of the afternoon, but chilly. we will have a light wipd, and highs reaching the mid-and upper 40s. another cold night tonight. we will talk about that and look at the weekend and the first peek at thanksgiving's day later. the roadways are looking good right now.

earlier this morning a lot of headaches, but right now seeing clear roads. traveling i-66, no signal kupt delays right now. i will give you travel speed. east and heading to the edsall road, you are clear. and inner loop and outer loop in montgomery county, you are in the clear from i-95 to i-70, you are at 53 miles per hour, taking ten minutes to make that trip. >> not bad. thanks a lot. an armed robbery on the university of maryland campus. police are investigating the incident outside the hall is that a dorm. this is the first reported on campus robbery in a year. one of the masked men had a knife and robbed the student before taking off on foot. the victim was not hurt. he got just a vague description

of the suspects. d.c. fire crews had to fight a condo fire and bad directions, too. it happened on 16th street, the 200 block, but initially the firefighters received the wrong address, and fortunately the fire did not cause too much damage because they were not that far from the actual condo that was on fire. a deadly plane crash has taken the life of the woman's basketball coach. the two were on a recruiting trip to arkansas when the plane crashed about 45 miles west of little rock. this is the second time a plane crash has hit that university hard. ten men associated with the men's basketball team died back in january of 2001 in a plane crash. was he responsible for her death?

looking into the death surrounding natalie wood. she died in 1981 after a night of partying with her husband and a friend. the captain of the yacht is the person with the new information that led investigators to re-open this case. this morning on the "today" show, it was explained to david gregory what happened that night. >> was he responsible for her death in some way? >> like i said, i think we all made mistakes that night, and -- >> that was not my question. was he responsible for her death? i am not asking about your story. >> yes, i would say so yes. >> how so? >> i really don't want to -- >> how can you come on national television and accuse him of something like and that not back it up? >> and then minutes later, natalie was missing.

dennis was asked to search the boat. he did and could not find mat y natalie. he met up with wagner in the wheel house, and dennis wanted to make phone calls and turn on the search light and his instincts told him something was terribly wrong, and robert wagner asked him not to. >> the wagner family released a statement saying we will re-evaluate any additional information coming from the death of natalie wood. her death had previously been ruled an accident. the secret service is protecting herman cain. his campaign asked for the

protection and the request was approved yesterday. there were threatable threats against his life, and he received the protection. this morning, we are getting a sense of just how big the occupy movement's day action was yesterday. most of the people arrested were in new york. more than 1,000 protesters gathered in the financial district there. here in the district, protesters marched from the macpherson's fair to the bridge in georgetown where they wanted to draw attention to the nation's crumbling infrastructure. nobody there was arrested. and then organizers say the group opens to reach d.c. by wednesday. that's the deadline for a congressional committee to decide to keep president obama's

extension to bush era tax cuts. and just a day before running out of money, they passed another bill to avoid a shutdown. they passed the bill, but before it cleared the senate late last night, 70-30. it will fund five cabinet agencies and fund the rest of the government through the 16th of december. it does not include the stricter nutrition guidelines for school lunches. president obama is wrapping up his meetings with heads of state from the soassociation of southeast asian nation. he has held one-on-one meetings from leaders from indonesia, and overnight he announced he will send hillary clinton to myanmar

next month. it's the first visit from a u.s. secretary of state to that country in more than 50 years. the president says there have been flickers of progress in the last several weeks after years of darkness. meanwhile the demonstrators protested the apresident's attendance at the summit. protesters demanded the u.s. stay out of the region, and they protested capitalism. well, does your office do a secret santa gift exchange each year? the u.s. senate is no different. 60 senators signed up for a gift exchange this year. here is a chance to see whether lawmakers can practice fiscal restraint. there's a $10 limit on gifts. tom, you and i should have a secret santa between the two of us, here, but i guess we could

back. right now on "news4 midday," the fbi is looking at a tape that the accused white house shooter made shortly beforing to d.c. in it he claims to be the second coming of christ. he has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. and then police are look into molest nation allegations against an assistant basketball coach at syracuse university. we are joined in the studio with

more on this. melissa? >> we spoke with police in syracuse, and they say they are still in the very early stages of the investigation, and now the school chancellor has sent a letter to students and alumni saying the school will do everything in its power to find the truth. the new accusations are being made as a set of step brothers that served as the ball boys in the '80s and '90s. and they say they were molested on the school and on road trips and at the coach's home. syracuse head coach issued a statement late last night that reads i have known bernie for more than 40 years. i have never seen or witnessed anything to suggest that he would have been involved in any

of the activities alleged. fein has not commented on this. and of course there are reports this morning that there may be more alleged victims coming forward in that case. barbara? >> thank you, melissa. we will continue to follow this story. meanwhile, the penn state sex abuse scandal could become a federal case. nbc news learned fbi agents are look into opening up their own investigation. that stems from accusations that jerry sandusky crossed state lines to commit child abuse. one charge in the grand jury report alleges sandusky took a boy with him to two bowl games where the boy was repeatedly abused. and now many are coming forward, and many supered by jerry sandusky denying the claims. >> i think the client had buried some of the thoughts deep down inside, and they decided he needed to make a stance and to support the other young men that

had come forward. he was not identified in the grand jury presentment. he was sexually assaulted in the early '90s, and the assault happened on the grounds of penn state university. >> this morning a front window of sandusky was smashed, and police were not called to the scene. it's unknown if the sandusky's were home at the time. people in fairfax county may want to pay attention to their surroundings. a man grabbed a student from behind in the springfield area on wednesday morning. it happened near lee high school. the 19-year-old is a student there. she tells police the man ran away when she screamed and so far no arrests have been made in

this case. and fema is delivering mobile homes for classrooms. the high school has bn closed for repairs. the high school students have been sharing space at the middle school. before the students can move into their new classrooms k the portable units need furniture, electricity, plumbing and fire security systems and the internet. they hope to open the high school by the year 2015. three young oklahoma city girls are lucky to be alive after getting caught underneath an elevator. it happened at their high school. the girls thought they were stepping into the elevator, but it was the elevator shaft it was they stepped into. the door was locked behind them and the elevator was coming down on them. they credit the boot for saving their lives. >> the boot got wedged in

between the elevator and the door out, and it was wedged like this and holding the elevator up. >> they suffered minor injuries and are already back to school. let's talk to tom about the weather and what we can expect for the weekend. >> this morning, we certainly had a very cold start. now with the bright sun, we finally warmed up a bit. there is the gorgeous royal blue sky over the region. upper northwest washington looking off to the west, from this view, and you can see a lot of the leaves are gone from the trees and temperatures. right now, we're in the 40s around the metro air krau, as well as the bay. and across central virginia, low to mid-40s. and central shenandoah valley and northern shenandoah valley, and the mountains in the 30s to near 40 there and all around the region plenty of sunshine for the rest of the afternoon with highs in the 40s. clear and cold tonight. 30s through the evening and 20s by dawn on saturday.
