muse. >> i'm jim handly. >> the plane went down in the town of perryville. the campus community is trying to cope with the loss of two beloved figures. we have the story. >> reporter: emergency crews were kept at bay from the wreckage of a single engine plane that crashed killing the pilot, his wife and two others. >> this is obviously an incredibly devastating event. it's our worst nightmare. >> reporter: nightmare for oklahoma state university. the head coach of the women's basketball team and the assistant coach were flying to check out recruits when the plan crashed. >> the first call came from hunters that saw the plane go down around 4:00. >> reporter: once word got to the campus, oklahoma state went into mourning. the women's team was to play

saturday night but was canceled to honor budke and serna. >> they were beautiful people. i would love to be the man kurt and miranda was. >> reporter: they didn't just turn around the basketball program since arriving in 2005. >> he was a great basketball coach but a better husband, dad and friend. >> reporter: it's the second tragedy in a decade for oklahoma state basketball. in january, 2001, ten men affiliated with the men's team died in a plane crash in colorado. washington nationals catcher wilson ramos is back in d.c. after his kidnapping ordeal in venezuela. there were hugs. zimmerman took a break from his

work out saying it's good to have his team member back. he was kidnapped where he was playing winter ball. police commandos rescued him two days later and captured his abducto abductors. his message was one of thanks. >> thanks for your prayers and your support. i'm happy to be here. happy to be with my family. see you in spring training. >> ramos met with team doctors who game him a clean bill of health. mike rizzo says there will be more security measures in place for players that play winter bawl in venezuela. penn state and syracuse. penn state, word that the ncaa is investigating the school athletic program. in syracuse, the long time basketball coach has been put on

administrative leave. jay gray reports. >> reporter: late today, the ncaa announced they opened up an investigation. federal agents are now looking into allegations sandusky abused young boys while going to games. he may have used the internet to communicate with or recruit victims. a list of victim that is is growing. >> there's comfort in numbers. they now understand we are not alone. >> reporter: he represents at least two alleged victims including one not among the original eight lists on the report. >> he was sexually assaulted in the early '90s. he was sexually assaulted on the grounds of penn state university. >> reporter: penn state's acting athletic director spoke for the first time. he lied to a grand jury and

tried to cover up the allegations of the abuse. >> it remains to be seen as we get the investigations that are ongoing. no matter what they say about me being an insider, as you watch what i do and how the university behaves, i am about doing the right thing. >> reporter: as the events at state college continue to unfold, there are new allegations of abuse. this time, at syracuse university. bernie fine has been placed on administrative leave as the university and local police investigate allegations he sexually assaulted two ball boys. he said it's lies and his assistant has his full support. support is something many are looking for right now in two major college athletic programs on two campuses and two struggling communities. saturday the football team takes on ohio state.

syracuse will play. of course a lot of the attention at both schools will remain off the court and off the field this weekend. that is the latest from penn state, i'm jay gray, news 4. penn state university has until december 16 to respond to the questions posted by the ncaa. things got frigid overnight. the question is, are we up for a warm up or a bigger chill? >> veronica johnson has the answer. what about that? >> well, let's say i think you are going to be happy by the time we get to the afternoon on saturday. for the overnight, you are going to need that coat. the warm coat, yet again. take a look at the morning/overnight temperatures or morning lows. we drop below freezing in most neighborhoods, down to 34 degrees. 27 degrees in frederick, maryland during the overnight. clarksburg you fell to 28 degrees and 28 in falls church

and herndon. it was cold enough to get ice crystals. that's what you are looking at here. ice crystals on the ponds, on the water. this is sent in from bill. the golden hew is some of the leaves reflecting on the pond. very pretty. clear and chilly with a light wind throughout the area. take a look at the satellite and radar, not just here, up to the north in pennsylvania and down to the south, we have clear skies. we are in the 40s. your good night forecast, we are down to 41 by 7:00. 39 by 9:00 for any of those friday night high school football games, it will be chilly. it will be another cold start for us tomorrow. so, once again, the warm coat will be needed. improvements for the weekend.

that's right, our seven day forecast continues to include thanksgiving. has it changed what we are looking at weather wise? i'll tell you in a couple minutes. hundreds of occupy d.c. protesters marched on the key bridge. today, they are going to occupy a d.c. metro station. they are calling it occupy evening commute. in a press release, the activists say they will assemble at the mcfepherson square and march to an undisclosed location. the protesters say metro riders should prepare for service disruptions. there were no disruptions in yesterday's protest. the motive behind the assassination attempt at the white house. the fbi is looking at a video tape oscar ortega hernandez made

before coming to d.c. he was arrested in pennsylvania on wednesday. he's charged with attempting to assassinate the president last friday night. in the tape, he claims to be the second coming of christ. he appeals to oprah winfrey to get out the word. he says president obama is the antichrist. >> i am the modern day jesus christ that you have all been waiting for. i ask you, oprah, better yet, i'm begging you, oprah, please cast me on to your show, oprah. >> no word on when he will be returned to our area from pittsburgh. members of the so-called supercommittee will work through the weekend to reach a debt deal before wednesday's deadline. they are composed of six democrats, six republicans and they remain split on the issues

of taxes and entitlements. the task is to produce $1 trillion in deficit cuts. if they don't, automatic spending cuts in social servi s services. they would not take effect until 2013, after the presidential election. with thanksgiving days away now, the georgetown nurses are once again collecting cans to feed the hungry. the can drive helps the nbc 4 food for families campaign to provide a meal for families in need throughout our area. >> reporter: at georgetown university hospital, the cans keep oncoming. >> thank you so much. thank you. >> reporter: it's a 72-hour effort to collect 7200 cans of food. all of it headed for the tables of needy families for thanksgiving. >> i'm getting a lot of corn and beans. i saw a couple of pumpkin pie mix. >> reporter: the canned food

drive is a holiday tradition for the nurses who recruit staff from all over the hospital to collect this food for families. >> each unit has a box where people bring contributions in. of course we have this table here and people from the community come over and drop things off. >> thank you. thank you. >> reporter: even a tough economy hasn't slowed the donations of cash or the donations of canned cranberry sauce or the trimmings needed for a hearty thanksgiving meal. it's part of the tradition of helping the community and inspiring others to do their part to make a difference. >> we really need to continue to have it in the forefront and remind people that while we individually may be fortunate, there are others who are not as fortunate. we need to do all we can to help them. >> oh, wow. >> reporter: the georgetown nurses are doing their part. >> everybody is very excited.

investigators in los angeles say they are taking another look at natalie woods death after receiving new credible information from several sources. the actress drown 30 years ago after a night of partying on a yacht. her death has been ruled an accident. one source of the new information is believed to be the boat captain. during an appearance on the "today" show, the captain said wagner and wood had a fight. he admits he did not tell the truth back then. >> i made mistakes by not telling the honest truth in a police report. >> just be specific.

i mean we talked about the broad outlines of the story. what were you untruthful about? >> just everything that took place that weekend. >> was the fight between natalie wood and her husband, robert wagner what ultimately led to her death? >> yes. >> the captain said he tried to tell the truth for years, but no one would listen to him until now. police say wagner is not a suspect. the wagner family released a statement saying we will evaluate whether any information regarding the death is valid and that it comes from a credible source of sources other than those trying to profit from her tragic death. after 50 years of broadcasting, regis philbin is retiring. he shared good-byes on "live

something between you and the bleachers you are sitting on. the bleachers making your butt cold. 35 this morning. that's what we dipped down to this morning. midnight, we are down into the 30s. 34 here throughout the mid-atlantic, the range 30 to 32 degrees. a lot of spots down into the 20s. cold with high pressure over us. a clear sky for the overnight for tomorrow morning, too. i'm calling it nice. a few degrees below average. very light wind. nice. then we get the clouds on sunday. so, tomorrow the sunshine. sunday the cloud cover. sunday, we'll see some higher temperatures, too. i don't know, what do you want? higher temperatures or the sunshine. cloudy on sunday. the cold front comes in. it's part of the cold front that brings snow to the midwest. for us, clouds coming in for the weekend. the evening forecast, cooling quickly dropping from 44 to 41 degrees.

cancer. joe paterno -- >> we'll have more coming up at 5:00. joe paterno was forced out of his job at penn state. new developments about the blockbuster drug avastin. >> today, it is no longer approved for women with advanced breast cancer. today, the food and drug administration revoked the approval as a treatment for breast cancer. fda officials say there's no proof it extends life and the risk of dangerous side effects outweighs the benefits. it will be on the market because it's approved for other cancers. however, the fda ruling is likely to affect insurance coverage. look around at any trendy women's shoe store and you see five inch heels everywhere. this may look fabulous on your feet, but high heels come at a high cost and pain. >> wedges and stilettos.

boots with high heels. you name it, i have them. >> this 37-year-old says the higher the heel on her shoe, the better she feels. >> they make me walk straighter and more confident, i think. >> reporter: after a bad spin on the dance floor she was sidelines. her foot was so swellen and bruised, she ended up in a brace and at physical therapy for months. >> the doctor said i would have been better if i broke it. i would have heeled quicker. >> women love to dress up and go out dancing and partying. mix that with alcohol, late night, dancing and loud music and it's crazy. you get a lot of injuries. a lot of women far and break their ankle or foot. >> he is seeing it more and more every week. women like her who end up in his

office with foot and ankle injuries after a weekend of parties. it's not just sprains and breaks. >> seeing people that have a lot more pain in the ball of their foot. a lot more bunions and hammer toes, more nerve pain. callouss that are becoming a problem. >> reporter: shoes with a heel more than two inches high puts anywhere from five to eight times your body weight on the ball of your foot. when women wear the shoes for extended periods of time, they can end up with serious injuries. if you can't give up your heels, choose a shoe with an open toe. it gives the toes room to move around and takes the pressure off the ball of your foot. >> i would also say get a heel that is larger than you would normally wear. if it's loose, at least there's room for your toes to move around. >> reporter: her sprained ankle is still healing but she's

well, when it gets cold and you are not quite sure what to do indoors or outdoors, veronica has ideas. >> that's right. this is a big event for the holidays. get people together, they get a antsy and need things to do. today is the opening of the ice rink. it's a real cool location.

since it opened more than ten years ago, 500,000 skaters have been there. i like the fact it's in the city. constitution and 7th. that means all you have to do is jump on metro. it opened today. a bit of a soft opening. not too much of a crowd there as you can see but as the camera pans around, this is huge. it's 135 feet by 90 feet. maybe not as big as our interactive wall here. if you can't skate, you have lots of room to fall down. i like the fact that going on all weekend long, saturday and sunday, they have free hot chocolate. the ice skating rink stays open until march 11th. as far as the forecast goes, it's going to be chilly and cold again. temperatures will be dropping down to the 30s, low 30s across the area. 34 degrees in town. sun is up tomorrow at 6:55.

let's look at the forecast across the area. under a clear sky and with a calm wind, i'm going to step out of the way. we expect to see temperatures drop to the 20s. 28 degrees in spots like over in culpeper. 22 in manassas. again, under clear skies. what can you expect for sky conditions? sunshine across the area tomorrow. again, warming up. that's what i like about the weekend. it's going to be warming up and turning nice on saturday. sunday we get the clouds. there's a snapshot of noontime. by the time we get to the afternoon on sunday, more cloud cover, no rain though. okay, dry for the weekend. highs in the low 50s across the area. big game going on sunday if you are lucky enough to have a ticket, the forecast for sunday, 58 degrees and mostly cloudy. go ahead quickly and see thanksgiving day. rain on monday and tuesday. guys, jim, liz, we are going to

be looking at dry conditions for thursday, thanksgiving day. all right. here we go. is it safe to cook stuffing in your turkey? should you buy it fresh or frozen? is pink turkey meat safe to eat? liz crenshaw joins us with a thanksgiving edition of ask liz. >> it's all turkey. the first question is about buying your turkey. what is the difference between buying the turkey fresh and frozen? >> to buy a frozen turkey, you are going to want to get it well in advance. if you have an old bird that's been in the freezer for years it's probably not going taste as good as a fresh one. use it within one year for best taste. frozen turkeys are safe to eat.

thaw the turkey in time for thanksgiving dinner. it does take awhile. if you prefer a fresh bird, don't bring it home more than two days before you are planning on cooking it. leave it at the grocery. buy it two days in advance. you cannot keep it cool enough. >> interesting. now on to the stuffing. this question is should you stuff the bird or do you cook the stuffing in a separate casserole dish? >> this is a question usda helped us answer. the safest way to prepare it is outside the bird in a dish, in the even. sometimes the bird is done before the stuffing which is inside it reaches a safe temperature. they want it done outside. whether you cook it in or out of the turkey, you must use a meat thermometer. it must reach 165 degrees. by the way, for safety sake, the

turkey must read 165 on the innermost of the turkey thigh. it's safer to cook it outside a casserole dish. i have a family that calls it dressing, too. >> the last question, consumers want to know if pink turkey meat is safe to eat? >> when you slice it, usda says the color, the color of cooked poultry like turkey is not a sure sign of safety. the only way to know is use the food thermometer. you can make sure it's reached the safe temperature of 165 degrees fahrenheit. the meat of smoked turkey is always pink. you shouldn't be alarmed if you see that. usda has more thanksgiving turkey tips online. go to www.nbcwashington.com and search for turkey tips. if you have a question you would like us to consider for ask liz, send it to
