that you have been waiting for. >> reporter: he says he's a savior but bows down to oprah to get on her show and deliver his message. >> i'm begging you, oprah, please cast me on to your show, oprah. it is crucial the world hear god's word. >> reporter: the video was shot in september at idaho state. a week ago, the 21-year-old came to washington and shot at the white house from his car while on constitution avenue. he used a high-powered weapon at the executive mansion. the president and first lady were not there at the time. he abandoned his car and escaped until his capture wednesday at a pennsylvania motel. here in washington, police recovered a semiautomatic weapon with a scope and boxes of ammunition as well as spent shell casings. he's not the first to open fire on the white house. in 1994, during the clinton administration another gunman fired on the building from the

sidewalk. no one was injured. the gunman provided no tape for his reasons. ortega's deepen with the recently discovered video. >> because the government is fighting or should i say bullying other countries for their oil, our freedom is at stake because of it. >> reporter: nowhere in the 45 minuteman manifesto does he talk about the president. he references him at the antichrist or the devil. he planned to do more than shoot at the white house from a distance. the video was shot by a film student said it disturbed him before ortega gained his notoriety. that student could be among those called to testify in proceedings here once ortega is brought back to the capital. that could happen any day now. back to you. >> derrick ward, thank you. the oklahoma state

university campus is in shock. two coaches for the women's basketball team died. kurt budke and miranda serna. they were killed when the plane they were in went down. they were on a recruiting trip at the time. this tragedy comes a decade after the university lost ten people affiliated with the men's team in a plane crash. oklahoma state's president says this is the university's worst nightmare and calling on the community to come together to support each other and the victim's families. we have got a developing story out of penn state university tonight. former head football coach joe paterno has lung cancer. the word comes from his son scott who describes it as a treatable form of the disease. he was fired last week by the school's board of trustees who didn't do enough to respond to child sex abuse allegations of one of his former assistant

coaches. now to late developments in the child sex abuse scandals rocking penn state and now syracuse. at penn state, the university learned the ncaa is formally investigating the athletic program. federal authorities are looking into allegations that former football coach jery sandusky abused boys. it happened across state lines. the acting athletic director spoke publicly for the first time. >> no matter what they say about me being an insider. as you watch what i do and how this university behaves, you will know and appreciate i'm about doing the right thing. >> meanwhile, at syracuse university, assistant basketball coach, bernie fine has been put on administrative leave while that university investigates the child sexual abuse allegations against it. fine is accused of assaulting

two teen ball boys, stepbrothers, for more than a decade. the head coach calls it lies and gave his assistant his full support. a week ago, he was in the kidnappers hands in venezuela and his life was in danger. today, wilson ramos was back at the park. julie carey is here to tell us he returned so the team doctors could check him out and so managers and players could see he is okay. >> returning to washington for a one-day visit was his idea. he had something he wanted to say. >> reporter: wilson ramos warmly welcomed back to the clubhouse. it was a week ago he was in the arms of relieved relatives in venezuela after police arrested him from the kidnappers who abducted him at gunpoint and held him for two days. the manager, mike rizzo said he returned to washington first and

resident who is lost everything. >> help for the people! >> reporter: flood stricken families demonstrate outside the federal emergency management headquarters to call attention. >> we have nothing left except the clothes we came out with. >> reporter: heavy rains from tropical storm lee caused massive flooding destroying the holy acres mobile home park. 500 people found themselves homeless and uninsured. >> it's horrible. we have many families living together. we have people -- we have one family that is living on the porch of a trailer. there is no low income housing in prince william. >> reporter: the family took in other relatives who lost everything. four people are sleeping in this small bedroom. 22 people in the house. >> it's sad because, i mean, they -- they lose. i don't know, it's really sad.

>> reporter: flood victims wanted assistance from fema, but were denied. small business and home loans were made available. >> within two days, rust sets into all the parts. you know, it's hard to sell something. you are talking 100 bucks here. >> reporter: this auto parts owner had damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. he'll pass on government flood loans. >> we have good credit. we can go to the bank and not jump through hoops or do anything special. >> reporter: these mobile home residents don't have that luxury. >> they should come to the families not to the state and county for infrastructure damage. it should be coming to the families for human needs. >> reporter: a spokeswoman from fema says virginia's governor has 30 days to appeal their decision. reporting live in woodbridge, i'm jane watrel. back to you. >> thanks.

a state of emergency in reno, nevada. this is a massive wildfire burning out of control. 450 acres already destroyed. 9,000 residents under a voluntary evacuation. local high schools are used for shelter. one person died fleeing the fire. that person had a heart attack. investigators don't know what started it. if you are a suburban or d.c. commuter, you know what a headache the back up can be every morning and evening. the district is taking new steps to build a brand-new bridge that could ease the traffic flow. tom sherwood joins us now from

the news room with more on the story. hi, tom. >> hi, jim. the bridge is at the end of its useful life. the south capital street bridge officially called the frederick douglass bridge carried vehicles into and out of the city. why do we need a new bridge? >> the bridge we have now is 60 years old. we have made many repairs to the bridge. the design structure when it was built was not an kuwaited. we need a structure that will last another 60 years. >> the new bridge is one of the highest priorities for the transportation department. it's estimated to cost $800 million. that will require a major commitment from the federal government as well as the city. >> if i had my way and had the money, we could see a new bridge

in six to seven years. >> in the scheme of infrastructu infrastructure, it's not a long time. they are getting $68 million now in federal funds. it will be built south of the old one. initial work already has begun. >> to start the preliminary design for the bridge and the approaches to the bridge from south cap. we will create a round about type of interchange that will allow you to go to the destinations. instead of signalizing it and creating back up, we are trying to create free flow. >> it's to help boost the economic development near the new baseball stadium and ease traffic on to i-295. maryland senator says a new bridge will bring new jobs to the region. we'll hear from him on news 4 at 6:00. >> we look forward to that. thank you, tom. well, it looks like this little bit of cold weather is

going to be here for a little bit. >> zip in and zip out. >> in and out. >> you got that, huh? a cold night after a chilly day today. the sun really helped. we saw a high temperature of 47, ten degrees below the average. with the sunshine, it felt good. the sun is down at this time of day. right now, 5:17 in the afternoon. yeah, it is dark out there. we are going to see what's going to be happening over the next couple days and what has happened over the past couple. we go down to union station. high monday, 73. tuesday, 68, 59 then 53 and today 47 thus far. once again, a steady drop in temperatures. that is a 26 degrees temperature drop over the last couple days. you could feel it today. 44 is the current temperature with winds out of the south at 6 miles per hour. very dry. it's going to allow temperatures

to really fall. they have done so. look at this. 5:18 at night. 36 in winchester. 39 in gaithersburg and 37 in frederick. that tells you it's going to be a chilly start tonight and a cold start tomorrow. clear skies. that means we are going to allow the radiational heating to go back into the atmosphere. it's going to be on the chilly side. down to 41 to 44 degrees. tomorrow morning, the numbers into the 20s in most locations to 34 in the city. clear skies and a very cold start. your day tomorrow into tomorrow afternoon, this is when things start to get nice. plenty of sunshine. high clouds moving in. cool early. a nice afternoon. temperatures 50 to 54 degrees. some areas slightly warmer than that. we'll continue to warm up over the next couple days. coming up saturday, tomorrow the christmas bizarre happening at the river road church. the forecast tomorrow, great. the event 11:00 to 3:00.

we forget this time of year how long it takes to defrost a frozen turkey and once it's defrosted how long do we have to cook it. we have the thanksgiving edition of ask liz. these are eternal questions. >> eternal and we literally cannot remember them from the year before. >> the frozen turkey, how long does it take to defrost it? >> a very long time. don't forget this, no one wants

a frozen bird on thanksgiving. we have tips for you. the safest way to defrost the turkey is in the fridge. it's going to take 24 hours of defrosting time for every four to five pounds of turkey. that mean as 12 to 16 pound turkey takes three to four days in the fridge to defrost. check your frozen bird and see how big it is. you may have to move it to the fridge this weekend. for faster defrosting, cover it in cold water and put it in a plastic bag or bowl. it takes 30 minutes per pound. 12 to 16 pound bird is going to take six to eight hours but every 30 minutes you have to change the water to keep the water cold. so, defrosting it in the fridge makes more sense. >> a frozen bird isn't going to chill the water? >> no, the water warms up. you have to make it cold again. >> okay. all right. let's get cooking. when you do get cooking, how do you cook it?

>> how long you have to cook the bird. don't guess. forget your grandmother's recipe. today's turkeys cook at a different rate. set your oven at 325 degrees fahrenheit. no lower then roast it from one and a half hours up to five hours. the only way to know, the important factor is the internal temperature. make sure it reaches a minimum of 165. check the temperature with a meat thermometer in the innermost part of the thigh and the wing and thickest part of the breast. do not guess. no guessing. >> what about the leftovers? what should you keep in mind when you store a leftover turkey? >> as you put away the turkey, follow these rules. cut it up in small pieces. refrigerate the stuffing separately. do it within a couple hours of eating. for more thanksgiving tips go to

iraqi general. he's the man to defend himself in this case of murder. all in court today in an orange jailhouse jump suit. if he gets his way, he'll wear his general's uniform for the murder trial. he's a 47-year-old german. he claims to be an iraqi general. he's charged in the murder of his 91-year-old wife. today in court, he got permission to represent himself in the trial. reaction from the daughter. what about him representing himself? >> that's his choice. >> she was found dead in her georgetown home in august. cause of death? beating, strangulation. the couple had been married 22 years. he got a $2,000 a month

say two siblings robbed a bank. one is in custody. they are looking for the other. they walked into the m & t bank in forestville a week and a half ago. they made off with what police described as a substantial amount of money. investigators say there was no get away car. they live on the same street as the bank. one has been arrested. police are looking for her brother. police tell us he might be connected to other bank robberies in the area. dozens of waiters at upscale restaurants in new york have been busted. police say they have been skimming off credit cards. they worked at high price steak houses. investigators say the waiters used handheld scanners to copy credit card information. the card numbers would be used to purchase shoes and those goods would be resold for cash. authorities say the restaurant

get ready, a top chef is opening a restaurant in a space occupied by hook. i's been closed since a fire this summer. tom reports chef mike isabella is going to move mexican into that space. >> hot news for foodies. a second restaurant for mike isabella. this is tom, food critic with "the washington post." this is interesting for a number of reasons. you have mike who is very popular as a result of his appearance on "top chef" and his

restaurant that is packed every night. i's good for georgetown. i'm not a huge fan of georgetown as a restaurant destination. a good restaurant is a good thing. it's replacing hook, which was fine. it will draw in a lot of crowds. you have tourists there. you have neighbors with money there. so, i think this is going to be really good. makes it, you know, at first i said -- you have to remember, he's been cooking for a long time. he's a new jersey boy who is cooking kind of italian. his grandmother is italian. he's cooked greek and turkish. he worked in philadelphia where he's cooked food in another restaurant. my feeling is, you know, mexican

how much is a college degree worth. a bachelor degree worth a million dollars. researchers compared salaries of college grads compared to those with high school diplomas. on average, the bachelor's degree earned $23,000 more per year. it adds up over a lifetime. the report shows a clear relationship between education and earning. investigators in l.a. are taking another look at the death of natalie wood. the actress died nearly 30 years ago. as kristen reports, new details emerged about what happened that night. ♪ i feel pretty >> reporter: for years her final hours a mystery. her death was ruled an

semifinals. my uncle has always wanted me to play here. it's been a dream to play under coach hanson. everything he has done has been successful. >> reporter: how neat is it to think you have been in one place 27 seasons? >> i have no desire to go any place else. it doesn't feel that long until i see pictures of myself. i'm getting a little bit older. >> reporter: earlier this season, bruce had a rock star moment. yorktown rolled over herndon helping him earn his 200th career victory. >> it's a good feeling. i like this ball club. i thought it was special winning 200 games with these guys. it was special for me. the best thing about coaching high school football is you get to do something you love to do. our guys here have been great. the football players we have had, we have won more than we lost. i think that's important. also more important is we have a

great group of guys. the guys i work with, coaching wise, i worked with great coaches, too. >> one of the great coaches -- offensive line coach gene pasadi who has been coaching 49 years. normal kids that believe in themselves and making them play up beyond what they thought they would be. it's like a chess game. they get started. they are at one end and one level. get them at the end of the year. they really call their own plays and know what to do. they work as a team. >> he's a great coach. a great mentor. also, he does things the right way. so, when i try to maybe not do things the right way, he's a great coach. he's on the football field, we are a better team. >> reporter: yes, they are. gene is 73 years young.

three teenage girls are speaking out tonight after having the scare of their lives at school this week. >> this is the oklahoma high school students. they got trapped under an elevator and the elevator began moving down toward them. the situation quickly escalated from bad to worse. >> when the elevator was coming down, i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: these three can't believe what happened at school on wednesday. >> it was terrifying. it was scary. >> reporter: the girls ages 12 and 13 were at lunch when a classmate said there was something interesting to see at the elevator. the girls went to check it out.

they stepped inside the elevator and realized they were in trouble. >> i looked up and noticed it wasn't the elevator. it was way above us. we tried to open the door and it was locked. we were locked in. >> reporter: the actual elevator started coming down on top of them. the terrified students got down on the ground. >> i was laying flat on my back. then it squished me. >> we tried to push it back up. i knew i should call 911. lift it up! lift it up! >> hello? >> we are trapped in an elevator at the high school. >> at the what? >> at the sas high school. >> okay. okay. >> please help us now. >> the girls waited 40 minutes for help to arrive. one of the things that may have

saved them, savannah's boot. it was lodged between the elevator and the wall. my foot was like this. my toes are kind of crushed. >> reporter: rescuers worked to get them out. they tried to keep calm. >> we are going to live, we are going to be okay. >> reporter: when it was all over, they were taken to the hospital. now investigators are trying to figure out why the elevator door, which is normally locked was open. as for the girls, they are shaking it off as best they can. >> i'm not afraid to be in an elevator, just under them. >> wow. that is it for news 4 at 5:00 for this week. >> makes you want to take the stairs out of here. >> that's where i'm going. >> news 4 at 6:00 starts now.
