leave after allegations of sex abuse brought on by two former ball boys. jay gray has more on both of the stories. jay? >> reporter: good evening, doreen. first, a lot developing late here at penn state. first, we start with joe paterno. his son scott saying he has a form of lung cancer. the doctors believe it is treatable and the prognosis is good. there is a new investigation on this campus and rumors of one more on the way as they try to fight through the scandal. the last time we saw coach joe paterno, he was leaving a doctors office. scott revealed the legendary coach is battling a treatable form of lung cancer. that news as the ncaa announced they opened a formal investigation into the athletic programs in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal. federal agents and prosecutors are looking into allegations

jerry sandusky abused young boys while traveling across state lines and may have used the internet to communicate with and recruit potential victims. a list of victims that several lawyers tell nbc news is growing. >> there's comfort in numbers. i think they now understand we are not alone. >> reporter: ben represents at least two alleged victims including one not among the eight listed on the original grand jury report. my client was sexually assaulted in the early '90s and sexually assaulted on the grounds of penn state university. >> reporter: as the events continue to unfold, there are new allegations this time at syracuse university. bernie fine has been placed on administrative leave as the university and local police investigate allegations he sexual aassaulted two ball boys for more than a decade. the head coach called the allegations lies and said his

the white house on friday. he's been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. if convicted, he could get life in prison. joining us now to talk about that video is nbc correspondent pete williams. let's begin. how did they get this video? >> he went to idaho state and asked for help in making the tame. the university referred him to a student there to help him. he wanted to make this tape and try to get on oprah winfrey's program to talk about his views. the whole tape is 45 minutes long. you hear where he's obviously mentally troubled. the fbi was in idaho where idaho state is earlier this week to get a copy of the tape. now it's come out and everybody is looking at it. there's another bit of information that's come out that he met with a computer scientist or computer science student in idaho and said i think barack obama wants to put chips in

every child like the kind you put in a pet to find them if they are lost. that will be the mark of the antichrist. more and more is said about how troubled he was in the months before he came here. >> any indications that this is the kind of thing that people should have reported to authorities in advance of what happened last week? >> he wasn't a student at idaho state at the time. it's difficult to know to whom you would report. there's nothing on the tape that deals with or prefigures the threats. he doesn't threaten the president or talk about obama. he doesn't give views that he spoke about obama being the antichrist. we have seen a lot of detail because of the court documents about how this happened. the car where he fired the shots, he pulled over. he stopped. he was not shooting from a moving car. secret services said several rounds hit the white house on the upper floors where the family quarters are. they have not said how many.

catcher wilson ramos was back at nats park to get checked over by team doctors. he also wanted to deliver a message to his fans. >> reporter: just a week ago, this was the celebration in venezuela as wilson ramos was freed from the kidnappers that held him for two days. today, the celebration came to nats park. teammates and management got a chance to welcome him back to the clubhouse. nats general manager said he returned first and foremost to thank his fans. >> thanks my fans for your prayers and support. i'm happy to be here. happy to be with my family. see you in spring training. >> reporter: it was an emotional reunion to see the catcher walk into his office. >> he's here for me to lay eyes on him, give him a hug and make

a surveillance camera caught a florida school bus driver using her cell phone behind the wheel of her bus. it caught cindy using a phone on two separate occasions. the school district says it camera was installed to see if she was yelling at students. she was suspended for a day. the school district says it is the only violation on her

record. if you use the south capital street bridge, you know what a headache and what a back up there can be every morning and afternoon. they are taking new steps to build a brand-new bridge to ease the flow of traffic there. tom sherwood that has report. >> reporter: the south capital street bridge called the douglass bridge carries vehicles into and out of the city. why do we need a new bridge? >> the bridge we have now is about 60 years old. we made many repairs to the bridge. the design structure when the bridge was built. we need a new structure to last another 60 years. >> reporter: the new bridge is one of the highest prioritiepri. it's estimated to cost $800 million. it will require a major commitment from the federal government as well as the city. >> if i had my way and had the

money, we could see a new bridge in six to seven years. >> reporter: it's not a long time. the city was notified it is getting $68 million now in federal funds to buy the land for the new bridge. it will be next to the old one. >> we will create a round about type of interchange to allow you to go to the various destinations. instead of signalizing it and creating back up, we are trying to create free flow. >> reporter: it's expected to boost the booming economic redevelopment in the southeast waterfront near the new baseball stadium and ease traffic on i-295 and the parkway. the bridge is also good news to maryland senator who is on the politics hour. he says it will ease traffic. >> transportation, infrastructure are direct jobs, construction jobs.

two major universities are dealing with allegations of child sex abuse. at penn state, the ncaa is launching an investigation of its own of the athletic program there. this comes as football coach, joe paterno has been diagnose knowlesed with lung cancer. at syracuse university, assistant basketball coach bernie fine has been put on administrative leave while the university and police investigate child sexual abuse against him made by two former ball boys. new video of a man accused of shooting at the white house last week. oscar ortega hernandez made the tape before traveling to d.c. he claims to be the second coming of christ and appeals to oprah winfrey to help spread the

he's a 47-year-old german. he claims to be an iraqi general. he's charged in the murder of his 91-year-old wife. today in court, he got permission to represent himself in the trial. reaction from miss draft's daughter. what about him representing himself? >> that's his choice. >> reporter: she was found dead back in august. cause of death? beating, strangulation. arrested, this man. the couple had been married 22 years. he got a $2,000 a month allowance from miss draft. she recently cut it to $1800. neighbors say there's been a history of violence in the house. the police have been called there on a number of occasions and that miss draft was afraid of her husband. i caught up with him hours before he got arrested.

robbery. it happened outside the cecil hall dorm. a male student said he was approached by two men in masks. one had a knife and robbed him before running off. this is the first reported armed robbery on campus in a year. tonight, a major step toward tightening d.c. ethics laws in the wake of several ongoing scandals. this bill would create a three person ethics board with the power to investigate and rule on ethics lapses. the new board also would have subpoena power and the authority to issue fines up to $5,000. they would lose committee chairmanship and could be barred from voting. a formal hearing will be held on november 30th. a formal vote is expected by the end of the year. hundreds of people in a

the drug received fast track approval. it confirmed the benefit for women with advanced breast cancer. fda officials say there's no proof it works and carries a risk of life threatening side effects. it's approved for other types of cancer. it will remain on the market. it may cause insurers to reject claims in breast cancer cases. the drug costs $88,000 a year. investigators in los angeles are taking another look at the death of the actress natalie wood. she drown nearly 30 years ago after a night of partying on a yacht with her husband, actor robert wagner and another actor. the death was ruled an accident. now, authorities sacredable new information is emerged from several sources about what happened. >> follow up on the leads we have. we are going to reintroduce people, interview new people and talk to people and re-evaluate

we are the original act. he's a nice guy. >> reporter: he says he got a call last year from the publishers asking if they would be interested. >> in the spring we did a reading for him. he spent a long time hearing what the kids had to say about the show. >> reporter: high school casts are typically girl heavy, it offers many female parts, thus the hairdressers. >> scissors up, nails bright, combs down. >> reporter: in the leading rolls, cookie, think snooki and the under statement in a show, the loose and luscious. >> i'm in love with helene. >> reporter: the students are thrilled with the chance to launch the show. >> out of this world amazing. >> it's great for the drama department. ken would trust his baby with us. >> i like best that no one has

done it before. i can do whatever i want. i don't have anything to work off of. >> reporter: the early buzz is so good one performance is sold out. there aren't many tickets left for the other two shows. julie carey, news 4. it runs tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at robinson high school. one of washington's top woman managers has an office in this building. jackie bradford, our boss was honored last night as one of washington's most influential, powerful, trail blazing women in business. they offer the award every year. she was chosen as a woman who leads our strong organization, nbc 4 and gives a lot back to the community. she does all that and more. we congratulate her on her achievement. she would probably hate that we are doing a story about her. >> she would. that's for sure.
