darcy spencer with more on that live tonight. >> this is the franklin school here behind me. officials had some difficulty accessing the protesters this evening. they didn't even have a key readily available so officials had to break into the building. once inside, there's no indicting they had to go room by room using a flashlight. later this evening during a seco secondary search. they had food and provisions in the basement and they planned to be here for quite some time. 11 protesters were arrested after taking over the franklin school, a vacant building owned by the d.c. government. >> it's one more thing we have to be prepared for. i can tell you as a city, the police agency working as a team on this, we're prepared.

>> reporter: protesters were on the roof of the building at 13th and k streets in downtown d.c. the fire department had to break down a door to let police in. protesters are believed to have gotten in through a second story window. each was charged with unlawful entry and misdemeanor. >> they could be offering some kind of plea deal, paid fines. it doesn't necessarily mean they'll go to jail for this. >> the franklin school was last used as a homeless shelter, it closed in 2008. there's been talk of developing the property. protesters who called their demonstration free franklin wanted to draw the need for more housing and community use. the protesters aligned themselves with occupy d.c. many from that movement played a supporting roll. blocking streets and ally ways

and some got bumped by police cars. the protesters plan to stay in the building indefinitely. but were arrested instead. and during a sweep of a building, two more protesters were found in the sub basement and were taken into custody. as we mentioned, all of these protesters have been charged with unlawful entry. that carries up to one year in jail if they're convicted on that charge. now, one additional note here, a police source told me earlier this evening that these protesters were refusing to provide anywhere names to police. they're expected to spend at least the weekend in jail. reporting live from downtown, darcy spencer, news 4. back to you. >> tonight we are learning how much money these protests are costing the district. they spent $870,000 responding to the occupy protest since october 6th. police tell us they allocate 20 officers per shift every day.

that's about $22,000 per day. now to a developing story out of oxon hill, maryland. police investigating the second murder on the same street in just two days. this latest one happened around 9:00 tonight. a woman was shot to death in the 1100 block of marcy avenue, just one block from where a 20-year-old man was killed yesterday. gentleman carrie butler was found stabbed yesterday evening. so far the must bes have not been linked. police in northern virginia investigating a carjacking in tyson's corner. fairfax police say a woman was approached in the parking lot of neiman-marcus, by a woman who said she was out of gas and needed a ride to the gas station. once that woman was in the car she produced a knife and stole the car. the victim was not seriously hurt. d.c. police trying to figure out how an officer's cruiser

several other vehicles. the driver was taken into custody for questioning. a bipartisan super committee created to solve the nation's debt crisis appears to be on the brink of failure. the committee is trying to come up with a plan to cut the nation's debt by $1.2 trillion by november 23rd. members of the committee through the weekend are trying to salvage a plan. if an agreement is not reached, billions in social security services will be cut. arlington's first fare increase since july 2008. cabs will be required to accept credit cards by december 1st of next year. in addition, only those 12 and under will be charged as extra passengers. what would you do for $5? just wait until you see what some people are selling online
