surveillance video captures a disturbing sidewalk attack in broad daylight. and royal chic. a real chance t own the bridesmaid dress envied by women around the world. hello and good morning. i'm lynn berry. and today we begin with a super failure. the bipartisan deficit panel charged with cutting over a trillion dollars from the budget admitted defeat yesterday and now republicans and democrats are pointing fingers across the aisle. meanwhile, president obama is doubling down on promise consequences, saying he'll veto any effort to bypass automatic spending cuts triggered by the supercommittee's collapse. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: it ended with a whimper at a mostly empty u.s. capitol. in a statement the supercommittee co-chair said, we are deeply disappointed that it

will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement. president obama blamed republicans. >> they continue to insist on protecting the $100 billion worth of tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of americans at any cost. even if it means reducing the deficit with deep cuts to things like education and medical research. even if it means deep cuts in medicare. >> reporter: republicans blamed him. >> what has the president done? now and then he phones in. you can't be e.t. you actually have to lead. >> reporter: the supercommittee could not make a deal to cut $1.2 trillion in red ink because, in part, democrats say entitlement cuts. >> there's a lot money to be saved without cutting people on medicare. our democratic friends like to portray that as the choice. that's not the choice. >> reporter: republicans resisted higher taxes on wealthy. >> if they were to take the bush tax cuts off and let the

american people decide, we could have an agreement today. >> reporter: the failure means automatic defense cuts in january 2013. >> i will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts to domestic and defense spending. there will be no easy off-ramps on this one. >> reporter: i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, capitol hill. egypt's interim military government offered to resign amid turmoil playing out in tahrir scare. they say 26 have been killed and 2700 injured during three days of violent protests that some are calling a second revolution. nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel has more. >> reporter: tens of thousands of egyptian demonstrate hes have now gathered in tahrir square, demanding the egyptian military step down and immediately transition to a civilian government. the egyptian military has been in power in this country since

president hosni mubarak was forced out by similar demonstrations almost one year ago. the egyptian military promised that it would transition to democracy. instead, the military kept marshal law, arrested thousands of people, sent them to military courts and now egyptians are furious. they no loerng trust the government will keep its promise and transition to democracy. this has not, however been a peaceful process. >> we are deeply concerned about the violence that has led to a tragic loss of life over the weekend in egypt. we call for restraint on all sides so that egyptians can move forward together to forge a strong and united egypt. >> reporter: egyptian government, which operates under the supervision of the egyptian military offered to resign but so far it is having no impact on the crowds. they want to see democracy implemented and they want the military to step down. richard engel, nbc news, cairo.

a group of cia informants in lebanon have been captured by hezbollah in what could be a crippling blow to the intelligence agency's surveillance of the terror organization in that region. concerns have now been raised that spies, who have spent months or years on the agency's payroll, could be tortured or killed. according to u.s. officials, the cia has us suspended espionage efforts no lebanon to see how the network has been damaged by hezbollah's counterintelligence tactics. now here's a look at other stories making news "early today" in america. a brazen group of robbery suspects dragged a woman to the ground on a boston street as they tried to rip her purse away. the woman was followed, kicked and punched in broad daylight by five women and one man before she could get away with her belongings. police have not made any arrests. a flash mob robbery executed inside a maryland 7-eleven has

increased calls there for a teen curfew. one group stood in front of the countrier as a steady flow of approximately 50 people walked through the aisles just taking whatever they wanted. investigators believed the group came from a nearby birthday party. a heavy downpour over the weekend has caused a san pedro roadway to crumble into the pacific ocean. officials had closed the road after ground shifting expanded cracks in the road over several months. no yrz or property damage was caused by the collapse. and finally, show time for the 85th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade is just around the corner. i still can't believe it. bands and dance groups rehearsed performances in new york city. rehearsals are also scheduled for tonight. for a look at your national and regional weather let's check in nbc meteorologist bill karins because i understand this weather situation here in new york could mess with this, especially high winds on thursday.

>> the storm goes through, the rain is gone, but it could be just windy enough some of the big balloons may not be able to make the parade route. there was an incident a couple years ago. we'll watch that. and a lot of other things today. oklahoma hasn't been pretty. arkansas has flash flooding. the big storm. mostly a rainmaker has has strong thunderstorms with it, too. our friends in the pacific northwest are dealing with a very big storm of their own. if anyone is traveling in that direction it will be a bumpy flight and difficult landing. as far as the heavy rain in oklahoma and arkansas, the worst of it is beginning to finally shift out of oklahoma. we still have good storms here in between dallas and shreveport. and now we're watching a lot of the heavy rain heading for areas like memphis. here's how it's going to break down today. at 8 a.m. east coast time. we'll put this into motion and show you by 5:00 this evening, the brighter the colors, the heavier the rain. indiana, ohio, into pennsylvania it will be getting drenched as everyone is going home from work or school today. also on the front we'll see thunderstorms from areas of

street selloff monday. volatility sees wall street back in late july when congress was debating the debt limit and it returned yesterday when the so-called supercommittee quit on a deal. energy and techs were hit harde hardest. all 30 dow commodities fell and gold fell to a four-week low. with wall street already concerned about an american credit downgrade moody's warned it may downgrade france from aaa due to the debt crisis pushing up french borrowing costs. one good sign, despite the supercommittee, investors still see american debt as safe. high demand pushed the ten-year treasury yield below 2%. in deals new, gilead is buying pharmasse. and allegheny buying trans. cooper industries was one of the day's few winners on news it's joining the s&p 500.

here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlin headlines. >> good morning. after suffering a pair of con kugs last january, sidney crosby made his much anticipated return last night and the penguins' captained looked like he was in midseason form. last night he made the islanders dizzy. just minutes into the game he blew by the defense and roofed a backhand past the goalie, crosby's first goal in nearly a year gave penguins 1-0 lead and then an assist to orpik. crosby with to points in the first period. added another assist in the second. you know it's your night when you can score a goal like this. shot the puck from the corner somehow, some way, it found the back of the net. everything went right for crosby. two goals and two assists. penguins won it 5-1. bruins tim thomas stopped everything the canadiens threw at him, made 33 saves. andrew ference scored the only goal in the game in the first

highway. the marchers will arrive at the occupy d.c. encampment some time today. tomorrow, occupiers will hold a rally to protest what they're calling the failure of the super committee to reach a deal that would ease the tax burden on what they call the 99%. frustrated and upset with the response to the government's economy, the members of occupy d.c. appear to be digging in fort winter. news 4 crews spotted demonstrators beginning to build a shelter at freedom plaza using concrete and wood. it will apparently serve as a spot fort group to escape the cold as well as a place for meetings and speeches. occupy d.c.'s permit is set to expire at the end of december. one person was arrested for sexual assault at mcferson square, the center of the occupy movement in washington. the assault occurred just after 7:00 yesterday. investigators are not releasing any details of the attack. we're told a man was arrested. his name has not been released at this time.
